Have PlayStation Ads Gotten Worse Than Xbox Ads on the New Systems?

When talking about the 360 vs PS3, the 360 had the worse ads. This time the roles seems to be reversed. The ads I see on the XB1 actually are about games, the ads I see on PS4 are about movies/music/andwhatnot.

Here's two shots I just took, both are from the US store game sections of each console.

I see fucking McDonalds ads all the time.
On Xbox One?
Too lazy to go take my own photo, but found this with a quick google search from Microsoft's own site.

See entire right side of image....complete with non-gaming Fast 5 ad, also Man of Steel right in the middle too.
Lol, that Man of Steel "ad" is what the user has open right now. It's not an ad, it's the application shrunk down to fit in the home screen. Next time please comment when you actually own a system ;)

Here's an actual Home screen, it's the screen I get when I boot up the console.

Edit:
It is still showing an ad within the app. It isn't showing my content...which to me is an advertisement.
Huh? So viewing the video store is an ad now? What do you want to see when you're on the video store?

what the heck are you talking about? you don't want xbox video to advertise the content they have available, with that logic the game store should not advertise the games you don't have either.

Not even close. MS just throws them right at your face (this may have changed, I don't know).

Just use the web store for everything dude, you can even downloads games to your PS4 via the store, it's awesome.

I wish the PS4 and PS3 stores would know I'm a PS+ subscriber (till 2016!!) and remove the "you should join PS+" garbage!

He has the app open. When you go back to the dash it doesn't close what you did last. For example if it was a game I played before turning off the console, when I turn it back on the game will be in the middle section.

I guess my overall frustration was when in the PSN "Games" section I kept hitting ads for stuff not dealing with games (and a full tab page dedicated to "The Purge") and in the XBO "Games" section everything in there was game-related.

A first world problem, yes, just something that I noticed.

I should. I just happened to boot up the PS4 and was browsing around. It's not a huge deal, just that "The Purge" ad makes me angry every time. :P

Yeah, but the worst part is the ads on the "Friends feed" thing. I can't understand why they would put ads there.

assuming you are talking about the "whats news" feed...the name of the feed is kind of self explanatory? shows you what's new in the store as well as what's new with your friends.

How are you able to play games when you can't navigate a store?

Complaining about a tab is ridiculous, but I can see where you are coming from on the other stuff. Just use the web app, I haven't been in the PS3 store in months.

I don't know about the Xbox One but when I boot up my Xbox 360 I'm looking at an add for a McDonalds bacon clubhouse.

I think there must be some mistake because I seem to remember paying Microsoft $50 a year for the privilege of using my console.

Are you living under a rock? The fact that you pay for something and get ads in the thing is pretty much prevalent in everything in our society. Buses, newspapers, cinemas, etc.

I've never personally considered an "ad" for content you can buy on the system you're using an advertisement in the context most people complain about.

That goes for PS360 as well as XB1PS4 and WiiU.

On the AU dash the 360 sometimes might have a small bottom right corner tile ACTUAL ad every now and again. But they're nothing obnoxious or intrusive and generally I'll get a free theme or avatar item out of it so I don't mind.

On the PS4 store I don't notice. I'm in their store of course I'll see "ads" for stuff I can buy within their store from withtin their store.

I think a few people need to lighten up.

Hmm, ok, nowhere did I say I couldn't navigate the store, I was merely pointing out a discrepancy that was different last gen.
This is not some kind of fanboy "Xbox rules! PS4 sucks!" thread. Alright? I was on the PSN store and this was something I noticed, I've noticed it before. I thought GAF would be a solid place to discuss.

Generally not a fan of ads, but in this case you are right. I added it with an edit, my mistake.

Changed my original post with an update. My bad.

Yes, I'm typing into Chrome on my MacBook Pro, looking at my Xbox 360, talking about my Playstation 4 and living under a rock. I'm a regular Luddite.

I just think the title doesn't fit the discussion. The discussion should be that Sony still sucks at good store fronts on their devices (the web store is way better). The discussion you wanted to have is about system level ads, which are now better on both sides.

Not even close

You're too predictable. And yes, Sony's ads on PS4 are infinitely worse than what are on Xbox One, because on Xbox One there have been no non-content ads. PS4 fills the store and the What's New section with fast food ads, ads for movies, ads for TV shows, ads for cars etc etc. Nothing worse than going into the store in the New Game section and the first thing I see is a giant advertisement for Noah the movie. So in a sense you're right, "Not even close". As in PS4 and XB1 aren't even close in regards to advertisements.

That's the name! I hate the ads on there, I wish it would just be updates with what your friends are doing.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the ads on the XBO when they start releasing their own video content.

Edit: My bad on the Man of Steel thing, not a regular user on the system it is my brother's. I primarily use PS4 except for exclusives.

Not hard to tell who doesn't own an Xbox One.

PS store integrates movies, games, and music. XB1 puts them into separate sections. That's why you see movies/music/games in the same store there on PS4. And, yes, that Man of Steel isn't an ad, but you didn't comment on the other three on the main home screen, which is easily worse than having them on the actual store like on PS4. (Edit: I pointed out the car ad in the XB1 screen here but that was a bit of a disingenuous complaint since it was related to game content.)

That being said, I don't think either are nearly as bad a 360 was last time around.

What ads?

Oh.. In the store? As long as it's not on the games bar home menu I really don't give a shit.

Maybe it's because I don't turn the PS4 on religiously every day but I never notice ads unless I'm in the PSN store. And by ads I mean non intrusive pictures. I don't get a splash video playing for me without asking.

Ads for their video content would start appearing duh

I know you are being cheeky, but I am wondering if some of the video content will get advertised in the Games section.

OP is talking about ads in the store only, there are not ads on the startup page unless you select the What's New.

That being said, I don't think either are nearly as bad a 360 was last time around.

The PS store does not integrate movies and games and TV. It has separate sections for all of them except for the New section. But that doesn't stop them from polluting the Games section with ads for movies, fast food, cars and TV shows. The non-content ads are rare in the store section, but it happens. They're mostly filling up the What's New Feed on the main screen, which is even worse.

And as someone else said - Come on, Sony, you know whether or not we have PS+ already. Stop pimping it all over the place.

Dont have an X1 but I have noticed tons of ads on my PS4.

I'm just hoping Sony will find a way to notice that I HAVE PS+ and don't need to go through 10 god damn ads trying to sell it to me while I'm trying to find the free games and discounts.

I really couldn't give a shit about adverts being shown in the store. Kinda makes sense having them there. What I don't like are adverts on the actual home menu.

It is still showing an ad within the app. It isn't showing my content...which to me is an advertisement.

I don't think you quite understand how the interface works. You don't go to the store to view your games. You go there to buy/rent stuff (renting for movies). Of course you want to be "advertised" things there...how the hell are you supposed to know what games/movies are available? Such an odd complaint.

When you want to look at your games, you go to my games and apps. From there, you get a clear list of all of your games. Also, you can pin your games to the left of the home screen, and if it was one of the last 5 games/apps loaded, it'll be at the bottom of the home screen.

The "ads" on the XB1 I feel are pretty non-intrusive. And I have found that they have all been directly related to content I can buy/look at on the XB1. I have yet to see any "add" unrelated to gaming or things that I can do on my XB1, and I'd be interested to see someone actually find an example of unrelated content being displayed for someone because I haven't seen it yet. I use the system almost daily, and I usually forget they're even there. Although I do appreciate their presence often (the Xbox Live Gold stuff, and links to new games coming out is very much useful, in my opinion).

Can't comment on Playstation ads. I heard the situation for ads was great on PS3, but only heard anecdotally that ads have become more of a "thing" on PS4 (although, my impression is that they're still pretty small?). Although I would call a Taco Bell ad a little annoying, if that was actually a real ad that appeared. Personally I was never that bothered by 360 ads (was pretty good at avoiding them), so if the PS4 is better than that, it should be fine.

That being said, it would be funny (or ironic) to think the XB1 is actually better off on the "ads" front...

I expect ads in storefronts and not on the dash. In that respect PS is still ahead of MS, but it could easily be even *if* the PS4 defaulted to the "Whats New" tab, which has ads (and many of which for things I already own) sprinkled into the feed.

Yes .. They use a huge ad space just as big as the game icons.

I remember thinking .. When did they make a disney maleficent movie? Oh that's a movie ad In the first space and also it's a main selection on the menu bar!!??

The ad worked! You now know about the movie.

I think you meant game, not movie.

under my AU account no ads other than 'store' stuff. I made a US acc I was stunned when I was coming across Mc Donald's, Car ads etc etc I had to lol (this is on PS4)

But it's a store. There can be ads for anything. I don't understand why others don't understand this. MS and Sony can put what they want in there. We're not talking about the main XMB screen.

i feel like ps4 is dropping the ball with ads and marketing just like sony did with vita....

you see a push for commercials for launch....but then it all dries up

i don't even notice xbox ads...

maybe it's because i don't watch the channels game consoles advertise on.....or that i barely watch commercials anymore
