Have PlayStation Ads Gotten Worse Than Xbox Ads on the New Systems?

I know you are being cheeky, but I am wondering if some of the video content will get advertised in the Games section.

OP is talking about ads in the store only, there are not ads on the startup page unless you select the What's New.

I seen that. I'm trying to find any instance where it would be a nuisance in or out of the PSN store though. This is the same on PS3, 4, or Vita.

I don't own either system. Can we get some PS4 screens in here for comparison?

This is the Coming Soon section for *GAMES* today. Note that Noah isn't a game. These non-gaming ads are a constant in the gaming section on the PS4 store.

Also note how they have a section for The Purge inside of the gaming section. Seriously, wtf Sony?

To be honest, I cant notice many ads on PS4 and neither on the XOne. Yeah, if I open the PS Store I will se many ads there, and the Xbox One dashboard have som adds at the right side of it, but its really nothing that buggs me at all.

I would say however that the PS4 ads are just a little bit more intrusive just because of the "What's new" area! That area however is a total disappointment for me, since I thought I would be able to see my PSN friends videos and screenshots, but I cant because I dont have the facebook of most of them, so its a pretty stupid design overall and I barely access it anymore.

Sony REALLY needs to do a better job of making PSN+ and its free games stick out. I really hate that I almost have to search for it. Moreover, I'm already a PSN+ subscriber so stop fucking showing me join ads.

I honestly find the web store easier to navigate.

https://store.sonyentertainmentnetw...es?smcid=ps:shop-now:ps-psn:playstation-store

I think they do this on purpose, since I assume actual downloads translates to paying publishers for the game "sales", right?

I agree that it's annoying as hell to find them though.

A little. The recent activity feed sometimes has those ads for 99¢ movie rentals, you know the ones where you can see 6 minutes randomly in the middle of the movie? Well what the fuck. It's a decent deal and I kinda like seeing that, but don't put it in the recent activity section. Put it in the store or under the movie unlimited thing. Game ads at least make sense there.

But even then...I'm bitching about nothing.

The PS store does not integrate movies and games and TV. It has separate sections for all of them except for the New section. But that doesn't stop them from polluting the Games section with ads for movies, fast food, cars and TV shows. The non-content ads are rare in the store section, but it happens. They're mostly filling up the What's New Feed on the main screen, which is even worse.

And as someone else said - Come on, Sony, you know whether or not we have PS+ already. Stop pimping it all over the place.

You go into the PS Store and all of them are in there. That's integration. Integration doesn't mean unorganized.

Now, about the ads, I have never seen a fast food or car ad. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying it is very rare and not remotely "filled" like you said. About movie and TV, I would prefer it not to be in the games section, but you are acting like their everywhere, when I looked through every section of the game section and there was just one movie (Noah) (edit: oh, and The Purge), and it only showed up two times. This is such a minute thing to complain about.

Loading the PS Store greets me with a giant advertisement for that Scarlett Johansson movie. It's not so bad, and it's within the entertainment universe... I'd be pretty annoyed at a McDonald's ad, but again, if it's on the Storefront, I don't care so much.

If I see ads anywhere else, it'd be gross.

It's too bad they don't use this ad revenue to LOWER DIGITAL PRICES!

I'd happily be spammed with ads for McDonalds, Chuck E. Cheese, or whatever else if they could adjust digital prices better

Nope I don't think so, mainly because PS4's ads are "hidden away" so to speak, while for X1, it's in clear view. Think I'm fine with how PS4 handled ads (not that they needed to add it), but so far the ads are somewhat relevant to me, so eases it from being a negative experience a little, while for 360 at least I'm seeing car insurance...and things like that. I think ads on these machines should be restricted to entertainment, if you need them at all, they can at least suit it to you somewhat then and you did buy that machine for entertainment in the end (games primarily hopefully)

EDIT: Ah seen that Noah ad on PSN store. That's pretty bad... Not seen anything like that on EU store I believe. Pretty against having a movie ad in that section, put it in the movie section.

Now I think overall that both systems' stores could be arranged better and have better layouts, and Microsoft always loves to throw ads at us, but I logged into PSN today and took a look around the store, and not only do I think they have too many categories for similar items (Coming Soon, Must-Haves, Only on PS4, Day 1 Digital, Digital Only, do they really need all these?) I also noticed a bunch of new ads.

I went specifically into the "Games" area and they have an entire tab dedicated to the movie "The Purge." Also under "Digital Only" AND "Coming Soon" they have a giant "Noah" tile as the first thing you see. Go down to "Only on PS4" and you get a big Slim Jim ad as the second tile, and under "Indies" there's a Youtube channel ad.

This is all inside the specific "Games" section mind you.

To compare I opened up the "Games" section on the Xbox One and there's a small tile ad for Infiniti 4 rows over, but it's in-game Infiniti content for Forza 5, and that's it.

Now I'm cool with ads for new games or demos or whatever showing up in the games area, I just thought it was odd that Sony is throwing movie and food ads into that area as well, and dedicating whole tabs to movies. Sony did everything right so far this gen, but it seems they swapped places with MS completely, including in the ad department.

As a side I think both stores could use to lose a few sections, as far as I'm concerned all I need is "New Games," "Demos," "Add-Ons," "Indies," and on PS4 "PSN+."

Thoughts? Am I crazy?
lol no. What you describe aren't really ads, at least not the kind people criticize. What people detest are those non-gaming ads like mcdonalds that are on the xbox dashboard tabs.

I'm not complaining about it. It's inconsequential. I'm just responding to the question posed by this thread. I was a 360 owner last gen and those ads never bothered me because I never spent much time on the main UI. I'm mainly a PS4 user this gen, and I dont spend much time in the PS store, so it's not bothersome. But the question is did it get worse on PS4 than on Xbox One. And the answer is unequivocally 'yes'.

Last gen those content ads were considered real ads when the console warriors went after one another.

No.

Ads don't even show up on PS4 during normal gaming experience. In the store they are categorized correctly (no movie ads in "games" tab), have an appealing layout, and a very user friendly UI.

I see a friend play Max CoB on X1 and there are fucking ads right there when the game starts up. Before he can access the menu he has to close the giant ads app that pops up.

lol no, not even close.

On a related note the repeating of the same ad on twitch/ustream via ps4 is horrible: Ive watched the same Watchdogs ad dozens of times a night even after i owned it, now its the same Assassins Creed of Apes ad. Annoying.

In terms of PS4, it does kinda suck how many ads are scattered around in the activity feed. Some are for games, but a lot of them aren't. XBO's activity feed doesn't do that from what I can tell.

You're too predictable. And yes, Sony's ads on PS4 are infinitely worse than what are on Xbox One, because on Xbox One there have been no non-content ads. PS4 fills the store and the What's New section with fast food ads, ads for movies, ads for TV shows, ads for cars etc etc. Nothing worse than going into the store in the New Game section and the first thing I see is a giant advertisement for Noah the movie. So in a sense you're right, "Not even close". As in PS4 and XB1 aren't even close in regards to advertisements.

talk about being predictable.... on the ps4 i can turn on and just go straight to a game without seeing a single ad. the interface isn't noisy with tons of stuff thrown in my face. the xbox one is horrible in that sense. i expect ads in the store but you can use the online store to bypass that if you are really annoyed by those.

That is just twitch/ustream in general, that is not a PS4 only trait.

I would definitely get pissed if ads were on my dashboard. But since they are relegated to the storefront, it doesn't bother me at all. Since I exclusively use the website to do my PSN store shopping, it really doesn't affect me. OP, use the website! even the mobile one! it's fast, clean, and quick.

I don't own a PS4/XB1 yet so I can't comment on that, but I can talk about how much I despise the advertising in the Vita store! I fucking hate that no matter what category you're browsing or game you're seeing, it always shows the same ads on the right, and to make things worse, some of the items aren't even games, they're fucking DLC for games I don't even own!!

PS4 PS Store is way worse than either of MS's, 90% of the content on screen at any given time is a paid ad. Ads in the actual daily use OS are nowhere near 360 or Xbone though

I think both the PS4 store and the Xbox One store need to get their shit together. I hate wading through the PS store when I know what I want. Especially the PS+ ad when I'm already a member. MS has a good system search feature, but the exploration in the store is unclear and sluggish.

Both need a major overhaul by a good designer for looks and usability.

I feel like the ads a well placed behind the store wall on the PS4. X1 ads are on the front page but a big improvement from the 360.

I think it's relevant to make the distinction that the 360 is the console that has the ads that you're getting at. The "ads" that are on the "in clear view" on the home page of the XB1 are all related to features/stuff that is accessible on the console. Sometimes it's announcements for new features that are being added/changed (like the Xbox Live Gold changes, Games with Gold, or the latest update that is coming out), sometimes it's videos that were just released (like during E3), or sometimes it's related to an app that you can download on the console (like the FIFA app).

I personally don't find any of those very distracting, and appreciate most of them, especially the announcement stuff because I don't think that kind of information would fit anywhere else on the console (e.g. not sure Store would be the best place to have announcements about the new update).

I think some people are getting the two consoles mixed up, so far the XB1 hasn't had any outside content advertisements that I have seen yet (like you might find on the 360 with car ads, food ads, etc.). I have been really impressed with the XB1's handling of ads thus far.

On Xbox One I can just resume a game without ever seeing the UI. But this thread isn't about ads in the Web store or a cluttered UI. It's about ads on each console, regardless of location. If I want to see the activity feed of mine and my friends, I get non-content ads. When I go to the store, I get ads for non-gaming content in the gaming section. PM more about my predictability.

They still are real ads.

They sure are. But now tunes are predictably changing.

?

No, they're not. You are mistaken.

"Coming Soon" is all stuff on the store. You are not yet in the Games section in that screen cap.

Of course the store has ads, if you consider content they're trying to sell you in the store ads. The problem with ads is when they invade the home screen. If we get a McDonalds ad as one of the live tiles in the homescreen, then that will be an issue.

This person gets it. The can put as many ads as they wish in the store, but they better stay the fuck away from my home screen/dashboard.

Considering where I live (UAE), I don't have ads that aren't game-related in the store or even in the What's New section.

Guess I should consider myself lucky.

I don't find it to be an issue. I mean, it IS a store. If the advertisements were all over my main screen, then yeah, that would be stupid. But they aren't.

They sure are. But now tunes are predictably changing.

Again though, the difference is that these ads are in the store and not right on the boot screen.

But this thread isn't about ads in the Web store or a cluttered UI. It's about ads on each console, regardless of location.

Wait, I thought this thread was explicitly about the Store portion of the boxes, unless I am reading a different thread.

The only ADS I'm mad about is Destiny ADS.

We all know that PSN Store is a mess. That doesn't mean that their ad locations are deliberate. They're just too lazy to organize it. I've seen games in movies section and movies in game section. I've seen Watch Dogs DLC on free to play section. I've seen PS3 games on PS4's coming soon section.

Is it a surprise that Sony is not well maintaining the store? It shouldn't be. Are they advertising more than Microsoft? Not true.

Simply stated, Microsoft is just not in a position to start advertising heavily on a console where they're confused about the present, and Sony cant do the same as they're as confused about the future.

Haven't gone on to the Xbox Live store, but the PS one is pretty bad. Had a huge Klondike background awhile ago and Sony puts games that lack demos in the demo section for some reason.

Nothing that dramatically ruins my experience, of course, just annoying that I need to see ads after having to pay for online.

No, I'm not mistaken. Go to the Games Section in the store. Then move down to Coming Soon. What do you see? Noah. There's also a section for The Purge in the Gaming Section. Why?
