Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Saw a ton of posts mentioning how shitty the comments were and no shitty comments. I assume that's because they were deleted but I'm wondering whether people worried about the implications of having Samantha on the cast and the kind of impact that might have on your standard internet forum jumped the gun. Did it really get ugly? I wonder if sometimes controversy happens because of fear of controversy.

Bummed by no real evo talk but I guess that's to be expected.

Guys, this is probably the kind of thing I should know as a regular tumblr user, but...

What the hell is cisgender?
There are two terms you need to be familiar with. Gender and sex. These are not the same thing. Sex is what you were born as physically. Gender is what you are.

You can be the sex of male, and yet have a gender of female. You've heard something like I'm a female in a man's body that sort of thing.

Trans (across) sexual or transgender deals with some of that.

Cis (same) gender would be a person of the same sex and gender.

It's a bit more complicated than that since both sex and gender extend past a simple male and female nowadays, but that's the gist.

gb didn't even do anything controversial this time, they just treated it like it was a regular guest cast and i guess the comments section did what it done done.

I don't understand what you guys want regarding the Bombcast content.

The whole Evo thing just reminds me of when Jeff and Vinny do sports QL's. They do a terrible disservice to the games, but I wouldn't have it any other way, even though I play a lot of sports games and sometimes feel a bit bad for the publishers/devs. The same goes for the Bombcast. I don't want them to feel the need to cater to everyone. I don't follow Evo at all so I'm even more clueless than the GB crew. I can see why some who do follow that scene would want it to get covered "properly", but I come to GB to find out what interests them, not me or anyone else. For example if Jeff wants to shit on Yoshi's Island or sports games, or whatever, it's why I'm there.

Samantha was fine and, overall, I thought it was a great episode. The first 15-20mins are pretty grating though since they spend so much time on Samatha's game. I prefer when guests are just there to hang out and add their voice to the discussion; a plug or two is fine, I'm just not interested in a whole pitch.

I don't fault her for that though since she tried to switch gears and Brad/Drew kept piling on the questions.

You can see a bunch of spaces where posts were deleted, and even then there are a handful of shitty comments.

Yeah its nothing wrong with samantha, it was just a rather dry conversation on something i really dont care about at all for a long period of time. Whereas the bombcast is normally a reasonably fast paced sometimes scatterlogical and irreverent discussion of games from the week.

Is if too much to ask to get anyone to know the basic facts about a news topic? Brad just brought it up and had nothing to say about it other than clueless remarks. If you're going to put something in the news section at least have a grasp on what you want to say about it instead of looking like idiots.

As I remember reading ages ago, there was some resistance to the term (it was odd, it was jargony, etc.), but they couldn't find anything as 'good' (or neutral, perhaps)?

What about Birthgender, the gender you were born with?

Or Anatomy Gender, the actual gender your body reflected when you were born?

I can appreciate the desire to avoid using "normal" because of the inverse connotation, but when you're modifying your anatomy to be a superficial representation of how you feel mentally, how much accommodation is the appropriate amount?

Cisgender just sounds arbitrary, it sounds ugly.

If they hadn't brought EVO up at all people would be "How could they ignore EVO?!" The EVO finals were great, Luffy tore through anyone who is anyone, but that doesn't really mean anything to anyone outside of people who already know the news.

There's a difference between Vinny/Jeff fucking around on a sports game and people on a podcast twiddling their thumbs over EVO. One's entertaining.

I'm not really in the right frame of mind to discuss this right now, but this seems like a weird argument to me

Cis- and trans- already exist as opposite prefixes, the same as hetero- and homo-

This is... a case where the premise addresses the question.

Dan learned two new words on the podcast, "agrarian" and "tea-totaler". What will he learn next time? Ha.

I definiteky liked Samantha, it feels like she should have a regular podcast of her own.

If it doesn't interest them, why even bring it up in the first place? Oh, right, because it's pretty big news in the gaming industry with special announcements there about games. If they're going to bring it up it might be at least worthwhile to know something about it.

I can't be the only one who looks up the etymology of words they find interesting. No-one knows the actual etymology of teetotaler, it might just be a corruption of 'total abstinence' or something

Ehhh, news is news. At least it was funny. If you want informative news about EVO I'm sure it's quite easy to find. I prefer whole hearted ignorance and not feigned disinterest and reporting news because you have to.

I'll spend late nights doing this. Very interesting stuff.

What about Birthgender, the gender you were born with?

The argument is that transgender people actually WERE born as the gender they see themselves as.

Or Anatomy Gender, the actual gender your body reflected when you were born?

That doesn't roll off the tongue as well as 'cis' does. Cis and trans have the same number of syllables. 'Anatomy gender' also ties into the sex of a person, which seems about as complex as gender. In any event, neither of those terms really describe the same thing.

I can appreciate the desire to avoid using "normal" because of the inverse connotation, but when you're modifying your anatomy to be a superficial representation of how you feel mentally, how much accommodation is the appropriate amount?

All of it? How does being called 'cis' change things for a cis person? Their life is still the same. Does a man being called a 'man' hurt him in some way?

Cisgender just sounds arbitrary, it sounds ugly.

It's not entirely arbitrary, but it's jargony. Quick search suggests they took it from organic chemistry.

He/they obviously didn't have enough interest to research it. I'd rather hear that side instead them completely ignore it or research it due to obligation and just "report" the news. They gloss over stuff all the time. If they do, it basically says to me they weren't interested in it at the time the Bombcast was recorded.

What would you have said if they completely ignored Evo instead? It's hard not to know that Evo is happening, but if you aren't interested in that scene that's basically all you know. That it's going on right now.

I loved his reaction to the word 'mutton' on the Divinity quicklook. Like it was a foreign language.

Is this the first time a podcast comments page has been locked? Giantbomb seems to be going through some identity crisis now, I kinda stopped posting in the forums when the site was redesigned and they relegated them from the front page causing overall discussion to decline, so i'm outta touch with the community but whatever is going on there can't be worse than that Linkyshinks Lost Planet 2 debacle from a few years back, lol.

it's not any less 'jargony' than homo/heterosexual.

i'm all for the malleable structure of language to change and address social wants/desires/cues (i.e. "Lets call it something other than cisgender") but given that being cisgender is widely considered 'the norm' and is thus only mentioned in specific opposition to the term transgender where applicable i think getting up in arms over the word is a bit...myopic?

Falserelic still makes crazy threads.

.

Is a little of GB getting bigger and the current tension in the geek fandom about social issues.

If they were bitching about Samantha being on, that's pretty embarrassing. Especially since we just went through the whole diversity issue with GB when Dan got hired.

I can't believe I would ever read lines like these in Gaming discussions. What the hell happened. You should all take social issues Off Topic, seriously.

WHY? There was a games convention about social issues, LGBT. This discussion is totally pertinent to this thread because GB had a guest from GaymerX and Dan went. Generally I'd say we are having a level headed discussion regarding the bombcast, gaymerx and social issues. You're the one freaking out about social issues touching your video games.

"There was a games convention about social issues." Yep, this is getting pretty crazy.

What the fuck at the comments. I thought this was Samantha Allen and people were angry because of the whole controversy that happened a while back. But it's just a designer who happens to be a woman? Good lord.

I always thought it was a weirder form of reduplication, something found in most languages (although never as common as in Chinese). Like fancy-shmancy or chit-chat.
