Fighting Games Weekly | July 14-20 | Bracket Resets Full of Tears (of Joy?)

"Nintendo called me a few days before EVO, and said they were hearing a bunch of negative stuff.

I said, what, are you talking about this, this and this?

They said no, we're hearing about NEW stuff!"

Man I think I need to take a break from fighting games, or maybe only play on weekends. They take up entirely too much of my time and they take away from my ridiculously huge backlog.

edit: if you ask most marvel players why the hell they enjoy playing such a fuckin' terrible game you're going to get something among the lines of 'feel' or 'base gameplay' or 'core feeling' or whatever. some way to say 'it is enjoyable to do extremely basic things like move around and press buttons'. enough to where people will play a game with fucking xfactor, vergil, zero, morrigan, phoenix, TAC infinites and other unreal bullshit competitively with other people. i sincerely doubt you'll find a massive amount of people people who believe that marvel does not feel good. complaints about literally everything else? sure, they're probably valid. but the 'feel' of the game?

it's enough to where those folks would accept anything else that captured that feel and was even remotely more legit than the shitfest that is marvel 3. it's ultimately why players have dreamt of a patch for so long and will just go out and say whatever they imagine for the game's changes in never-never land. that's the power that nebulous concept of 'feel' holds

This is why I ended up not playing SF4. The game design annoys me in some ways, but the straw that broke the camel's back was the basic feel of moving around and doing stuff. I mean, I harp about KOF13 being one of the best pieces of system design I've ever seen, but these other games I play/dabble in? VSav, 3S, GG, Melee? Flawed, some a bit, some a ton. But the common thread in all is that just doing stuff in those games is fun and satisfying as hell and keeps me wanting to play more.

What the hell is going on, I've missed the Triforce drama before and after EVO.

I especially loved the part about Arturo Sanchez being investigated by the FBI? Is streaming Melty Blood a capital offence these days? Being part of the Arcana Heart mafia with Justin Wong?

He was already off the deep end but now it's time to....

ps. Not gonna be ever hosting suites for gaming again. Congrats to who ever found my envelope of money in the room. - https://twitter.com/lapchiduong That's a bummer.

It's getting kinda sad.

Yeah. I just caught up on the thread. There should be a German word for when schadenfreude ends and a situation just becomes awful.

I think Amiami gives you a few chances to cancel, especially if you have a good history with them. But yeah, preordering shouldn't be something you do on a whim with them.

BUT pre-orders sell out super fast on ami-ami, so it's a bit of a catch-22. For figures/models you have a second chance with HobbyLink Japan, but even then popular stuff will sell out fast. I knew there was going to be a figure of Aomine from Kuroko's Basketball (my avatar) and I even set a google search for it, but it still sold out on ami-ami within hours, and I only nabbed it on HLJ by sheer luck (caught it in the 3 hours it was up for pre-order on the site).

Nah, unless it's super ultramax popular most figures these days don't sellout within the blink of an eye. They're becoming the exception as opposed to the rule, even on Amiami (think they're just allocating more stock and keeping up with the demand overall). KB is one of those exceptions.

Yeah. I've had bad luck with timing on amiami lately, mostly because the stuff I'm interested in falls into the exception. Missed out on the Jibanyan 3DS (but got it on Nippon-Yasan for the next best price, no way I'd pay Play-Asia's markup). Just barely got some Hunter x Hunter stuff for my daughter. And their Smash 3DS allocation is sold out, though that was probably available for a long time (will just get that digitally).

So I'm getting freaked out about getting orders in quickly now, hah.

Haha yeah, totally get ya. I myself have been trying to get the KB figures but it's damn nigh impossible. So far I managed to get one, and it was by chance and after months of searching. Like goddamn. All this work for a piece of plastic.

With a bit of luck, you could also try just waiting until your item's release date because they sometimes have copies available (not always admittedly).

This. I'm getting into GG bit by bit. Its so much fun, even though I probably suck at it but Faust makes it all better as to how weird he is, less creepy than my main is SC2 which is Voldo. Can anyone recommend a really weird character in BB if I ever want to play it?

Arakune, maybe? Pretty much an amorphous bag of bugs with very odd movement. His basic gameplan is to fill the "curse" bar above his super meter and to go HAM with fullscreen lockdown / crazy combos once it is full.

Sample combos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE9H4jkNq6w
Sample matches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE6WB6Xp_vc

So i'm thinking of playing Amane. Is he high execution?

He generally isn't too bad in terms of execution and only has a handful of slightly tricky stuff with stance cancels and lowest possible j.2b. But his combos can be pretty inconsistent and hard to confirm due to heavy dependencies on opponent distance and hurtbox.

Is there a guide to properly cleaning fightstick buttons somewhere? My FP is getting stuck a lot.

When I cleaned mine, I just used rubbing alcohol and let it dry. It's a pretty simple process. remove the button from its' housing (there are two nubs on the side to release.) clean, dry, reinstall.

Some figures do sell out really fast, but you still have a couple of months to decide how much you want it before pre-orders open.

Me too. It's such an expensive endeavor, though. Flight alone would cost me something like $2000, at least.

I think Yipes's Marvel malapropisms have become a new EVO tradition. Previously it was "Lavathian stomp", this year it's "T'Challa". I'm looking forward to next year when he refers to Super-Skrull as "Kurt" or something.

ha, i was playing blackjack with marn for a bit sunday night. I thought it might be him but wasn't 100% until we went around introducing ourselves. no handshake tho :kappa
