TLOU Remastered screenshots (PS Blog)

I'm disappointed to be honest. I've been concerned ever since we saw the original footage and these pictures do little to convince me it's worth buying again.

Jumping in to the graphics debate; I think both God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 looked more pleasing on the eye than TLoU.

Well obviously. Post apocalyptic generally isn't pleasing to the eye.

Beyond: Two Souls - Definitely, but ran like crap in a lot of areas
Never as bad as The Last of Us though. Only happened in one area for me as well, that didn't look so hot anyway. All of the insane parts ran pretty flawlessly while TLoU often takes a dip. Not that it really matters, both are great technical achievements on their hardware.

You picked the wrong image, because this one has great IQ [which was the point of the TLOU Remaster image discussion]. Just 1 year ago, 99% of us here would call this Infamous screenshot as pure bullshot.

The IQ in Infamous is great, but it's not perfect like the TLOU screens in the OP, as that screen shows.

I never said it was bad.

When you compare the shots, it is like someone took it from low to high on PC, pretty amazing.

But on its own, the assets do seem dated.

But some screenshots of ISS indeed have perfect IQ. ND could have hand-picked the similar set of HQ screens for TLOU Remaster promotion.

This is GAF man. We are all grasping for even smallest of chances. :D
I am not, I will be happy no matter what the IQ is. :)

No jaggies on power lines confirmed!

I'm speechless. Even if the power lines are a little jagged, do you really care enough to complain? Will it detract from your experience enough to not buy the game because some black lines 10 meters higher than your head are jagged? Christ, Gaf! :(

Actual gameplay shots of Infamous do show little bits of aliasing here and there. Its nothing super noticeable, but its there. Certainly not 'perfect'. I'm not sure 'perfect' is possible at 1080p without an incredible amount of AA in general. Just a limitation of the resolution and the PS4 hardware.

That said, TLOU isn't as graphically impressive as Infamous is. They could afford to go a bit more extreme with the AA solutions.

Sony hasn't 'bullshot' us yet with the PS4, so I can give them the benefit of the doubt here.

Man, those comparisons. I feel like you could even add WELCOME TO PC GAMING to them, it's that good.

I should print those shots to have them inside me.

People actually think that those photos are bullshots?

After inFAMOUS: Second Son, I don't doubt that the PS4 could run a PS3 game (emphasis on PS3), at 1080p/60fps, with some solid anti-aliasing and improved textures. I can understand the skepticism for the Uncharted 4 trailer, but TLOU Remastered? What?

It's not like we're seeing a graphical paradigm shift with TLOU:R. It's just an updated PS3 game, running on vastly superior hardware than a PS3.

TBQH, jagged power lines detract me too. It is extremely irritating.

Unscaled 720p screenshots from the PS3 version:

Because you really don't need to upscale those shots to outline just how much better the PS4 version looks.

Them jaggies.

Well, PS3's Cell processor does laugh at PS4's CPU. :P

I think it looks like it is intended to look. A PS3 game in 1080p/60 with improved AA, AF. But those screens have definitely been taken through photoshop with some sharpening.

Ha.

A PC gamer only needs to buy a game once.

And they can do it with pretty much every game, not just the select ones that a manufacturer decides to 'remaster'.

I'm glad Sony are doing this, but don't get carried away here. This is everyday stuff on the PC, and without having to rebuy anything.

Also, the sky is blue. It's a given but honestly has little place in this particular thread. It wasn't you who brought it up but things like that are the last things I expected in this thread.

I don't know what you mean by that. I've seen plenty of downsampled shots of PS4 games.

But Naughty Dog have also been known to downsample screenshots for promoting their games so there's that.

Anyways, you can just analyze the images a bit. The powerlines are pretty much a dead giveaway. The bit of ringing around the edges implies there's a bit of sharpening in the downsampling algorithm.

The amount of AA required at 1080p for this IQ would be insane. But that's the last I'll comment on it until people post their own shots in the console screenshot thread.

Also, while Infamous does look damn good, you can still notice subpixel, shader, and even edge aliasing in some shots. They don't really compare to the perfectly clean downsampled shots prior to release.

I know, I know. Just talking about the quality. >_<

As I said in the old thread, those shots remind me of MT Framework (and now some UE3 too) games on PC, which is a great thing imo, I love how those games look.

I'm always amazed by DmC on PC every time I play it.

It was especially weird with Second Son because they didn't even bother hiding it, you could easily find the 4K shots around.

How can people not recognize how better the PS4 version looks. The PS3 version is fucking ugly on a 1080p screen. The image quality is garbage, there are jaggies everywhere, lots of smear looking textures. Its a game that had a very technically impressive base but tried to much on limited hardware. The PS4 version is going to literally fix everything wrong with the PS3 version. The IQ alone will make a staggering difference.

Yeah, I'll have to agree. Even if those shots are downsampled, the IQ you'll get at 1080p was really needed. I could see all the places where the game was impressive, but still couldn't appreciate it fully because of the IQ. The framerate was terrible too, to the point where even if it was 30fps it would already make a good difference, having it at 60 is great.

Hahaha, come on now.

Why? The game actually has a pretty damn good implementation of SMAA (from what I've seen, waiting on a good sale to buy it myself), they should showcase that instead.

I find it hard to believe the anti-aliasing in those screenshots are present outside of this 'photo mode'. But if it is, I'm incredibly impressed. Especially if the game manages to run at a steady 60fps!

Don't know what I was expecting but DAYUM! that looks magnificent. Crystal clear and almost no jaggies. Gonna fill my hard drive with screenshots on day 1.

1080p doesn't automatically make a game look better than every 900p game.

Bioshock 1 at 4k still doesn't look as good as Infamous at 1080p. There's more to graphics than resolution.
But BioShock 1 looks better in 4k than 1080p... same for Ryse if they for example use a PC to run it at 1080p with the same XB1 assets.

Well, you say its a given, but I'm not sure many console gamers quite appreciate this aspect of PC gaming.

I guess I've just missed those.

I loved TLOU on PS3, but the jaggies did get on my nerves a little. They were everywhere.

No, it obviously didn't ruin the experience or anything, but I'm looking forward to the better AA.

Nor does it mean nothing. That's why he said, "Plus...". It was an added detail, not the only.

I was specifically addressing the 'plus' part of it. It wasn't the only thing he said, but that part of it was misleading/inaccurate. A game doesn't automatically look worse than another game because it has a slightly lower resolution.

lol jakes on you, shadow fall actually looks like that son.

Killzone is 2160p?

I would not have chimed in but you brought it up.... Console gamers cannot appreciate it because it is not true..... You may only have to buy a game once but you do have to rebuy several things to get better performance out of the same game which is generally a lot more than $50usd. I have a very hefty rig myself but my wife is using my hand me down graphics card (HD 7790) because it simply would not give me the performance I wanted on newer games. So yes some of the same games I purchased run much better but only after a few hundred dollar investment. There are pros and cons to Console just as there are to PC. Lets not get carried away here.

Good point even if lots of console threads go through this cycle.

Yea, and you have to buy a PS4 to get this 'remastered' version of TLOU.

My point is that you don't have to rebuy the software to get the benefits of your new and improved hardware on PC. You buy a new graphics card and you don't have to rebuy a game to be able to play it with higher settings/resolution/framerate/whatever. And this works with pretty much every game, not just select ones.

I don't want to turn this into a PC vs console thing, but I think its fair to correct misleading representations of either, which you and the other person are guilty of.
