Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

So, I may be late here, but didja guys hear the Gamestop rumor? According to it, not only is the Wii U version releasing on November 21, but every game will include a free Amiibo figure.

Man, if this is true, there go my plans to get the game digital, demolished just like that.
So that's two retailers listing the 21st of November now. Also, as for the amiibo thing maybe as a pre order bonus but I can't see them giving away an amiibo with all copies of the game.

Anyone besides me think that Lucina is kinda of boring? I dunno if anyone remembers but during Melee's development, Sakurai intended to add Leif in as a clone of Marth, but was kicked in favor of Roy due to fire making his attacks look more interesting and visually distinct. The same could be said about Lucina, she's just nothing interesting due to her lack of any interesting features and her only draw is easy mode Marth.

Yeah but Lucina is a gal whereas Leif is a bloke therefore she is better by default.

I think that Nov. 21st might just be an educated guess from the retailers considering that
  1. Most "Holiday" releases happen in November,
  2. Nintendo usually releases on Fridays and
  3. the 21st is the last Friday before Black Friday and the start of the holiday shopping season.

Those last two aren't right though.

So Robin has a mechanic on his Nosferatu, where he places a curse debuff on the enemy, and every hit he makes on that enemy will result in him healing himself. The interesting part is this:

"What's also interesting is that if the cursed opponent is struck from the back, the amount of health Robin recovers will be larger."

Can you say... Shulk?

Like Snake, all that means is he was cut during development and had his moves redistributed among other characters.
/s?

Those last two aren't right though.

They are.

  • Smash 3DS is launching on Friday, October 3rd. Mario Kart 8 launched Friday, May 30th. Super Mario 3D World launced Friday, November 22nd 2013. This has been established for a while now.
  • Thanksgiving falls on November 27th this year, meaning Black Friday is the 28th, exactly one week before the 21st.

All it means is that Shulk could totally be implemented with moves that are placement specific... I hope

Also means he could place buffs and debuffs.

Hmm prob reaching but in light of the new information that Lucina was planned to be a Alt I remembered something.

She has seemingly animation problems with having Marth's set applied to her. (Thumb) Obviously built for his rigging in mind and not hers.

I only remember one other character that had similar animation issues, or even worse. (left arm)

What came to mind is the potential of someone like Impa being an alt like that and they actually animated her first then copied over even though Sheik is the "actual" character.
Or for Sheik this could just be put down to issues with unrefined porting of animations from brawl. (And they definitely are Recycling.)

Pokemon XY launched on Sunday. Fire Emblem Awakening on a Monday. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Sunday.

And Black Friday is considered the start of the American Shopping season not the friday before.

Going by major Nintendo holiday releases since Wii launch:

SM3DW - November 22, Friday
WiiU/NSMBU - November 18, Sunday
Skyward Sword - November 20, Sunday
DKCR - November 21, Sunday
NSMBW - November 20, Friday
Animal Crossing City Folk - November 16, Sunday
Mario Galaxy - November 12, Monday
Wii/Twilight Princess - November 19, Sunday

So, besides ths oddities in 2007-08 either November 21 or November 23 would be a most reasonable guess. Going by last year's big holiday release 21 would be in line with expectations.

A couple of anomalies, but Friday is still the most common, especially for the big releases.

I know. You must have misread my post.
You can't simply dismiss them as anomalies because they don't fit what you believe to be true.

I mean I can argue the game will be released on a monday because two of the previous smash games were released on Mondays and one on Sunday. How about that?

Nintendo games always release on a Friday in the UK btw.

Shopto has said november 21st for a while now as well.

Also apparently there's new videos that people think are from a newer build?

Is there any point in analysing them against the best buy footage or has someone already done that for me?

Have there been positioning-specific moves before?

Snake C4, Rest, Luigi's jump punch.

for a second there we were on page 2 of gaming. UNACCEPTABLE

Wow, whoever wrote up that rumor didn't proof themselves. The Mii Fighters aren't on his mock character select screen... instant debunk. :P

BTW, just watched the new Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire videos you guys did -- that was excellent, and I think the guest was a great addition. Seems like a really nice guy. Those remakes are shaping up nicely.

But back to Smash -- for the end-of-week discussion, please consider reading Masked Man's translation of Sakurai's Famitsu column. I think the GameXplain viewers who don't know about it would find the reasons for Robin and Lucina over Chrom quite interesting. It was, after all, (one of) the biggest surprises of the week. :-)

Thanks! Ted was fun to talk with and he was a great addition to the discussion. :)

As for Masked Man's translation, we've already read it as of a few hours ago and we definitely plan to bring it up in this week's discussion. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just for reference, I looked up all the games Nintendo have released or that have a set release date this year in North America:

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze: Friday, Feb 21
Yoshi's New Island: Friday, Mar 14
Disney Magical World: Friday, Apr 11
Kirby: Triple Deluxe: Friday, May 2
Mario Golf: World Tour: Friday, May 2
Mario Kart 8: Friday, May 30
Tomodachi Life: Friday, Jun 6
Wii Sports Club: Friday, Jul 25
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Friday, Aug 29
Hyrule Warriors: Friday, Sep 26
Super Smash Bros for 3DS: Friday, Oct 3
Fantasy Life: Friday, Oct 24
Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: Friday, Nov 21

Seems like they've been VERY consistent with releasing on Friday this year.

Yeah, a lot of the art in the thread has been awesome.

The Super Bash Sisters roster grows.

I'm not too excited about Lucina myself. Bit surprised that Fire Emblem fans in general seem to be okay with her being so similar to Marth, but I guess that's exactly what they'd expect. I'd want her to be more than just beginner Marth. That way a skilled player of both would have more of a reason to chose one or the other. Robin, on the other hand, looks really fun and unique. It'll be interesting to see where the balance is between depleting your resources and how fast they recharge. Seems it'd be easy to make Robin feel too strong or too weak just depending on how fast his/her tomes and sword break and recharge, so it's extra hard to balance.

I can't tell you how amazing having a Nov 21st BDay has been growing up as not only a gamer but a Nintendo Gamer.

So many amazing titles came out on my BDay, or within a day or so of it. I have always gotten something gaming related and just released for my BDay, and it was usually a huge fucking title.

Gamecube, DS, Wii, 260, Xbox One, Wii U all amazing gifts I got or got for myself lol. All within 1-3 days if not right on my BDAY.

Some releases on the 21st I remember very well.. DKC 2, OoT, SSB: Melee!, DKCR

So yeah, I believe the 21st rumor... MINUS one HUGE issue. That's the same release day as Pokemon ORAS and I just don't see Nintendo double dipping on two of their huge games this holiday. If SSBU can be out before black friday then sure.. maybe. Otherwise I Highly doubt we will see it on the 21st. I will be surprised to see it before Dec to be honest.

So was this posted yet?

In his regular column for Japanese magazine Famitsu, Director Masahiro Sakurai has explained why Chrom was left on the cutting room floor and reveals that the character was in contention at one point, but was dropped because he simply wouldn't have added anything new to the roster:

I played all the way through FE:A and really wanted to include a character from that rich cast in Smash Bros. Naturally, I considered adding Chrom to the roster, but the decision wasn't easy by any means.

At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics.

Conversely, when the idea of including Robin came to mind, conceiving the character was so easy that I immediately saw how it would work. From standards to specials, grabs to throws, all aspects of his moveset just fell into place. Not only did he possess characteristics unlike other fighters, but he also captured the essence of the Fire Emblem series. It was perfect!

In the end, if a game isn't fun, then there's no point. Of course, it would be really easy to make a game by churning out a ton of similar characters, but that's not how I produce games.

He also went into detail on why he decided upon Robin and Lucina for inclusion in the game:

Robin appears in the game as a Tactician and functions much like a Mystic Knight (note: FF terminology, but equivalent to magic swordsman). I thought to utilize his all-around nature by assigning swordplay to his Smash attacks and magic tomes to his special attacks--that is, allow him to use magic.

His neutral special is thunder magic that grows stronger the larger you charge it. He uses fire magic for his side special, and wind magic for recovery as his up special. Although Robin doesn't use dark magic in FE:A, I decided to assign it as his down special. It isn't the first time I've given moves to a character that they don't use in their respective game in order to capture certain aspects of the original title.

I also implemented the system used in FE:A, in which tomes break after overuse. Likewise, I included a similar system for the Levin Sword, which breaks after a certain number of uses. However, both the tomes and the Levin Sword will quickly regenerate after a set period of time.

Lucina uses the same techniques as Marth, a fighter with whom I'm sure most of you are already familiar. I even went so far as to make their strength, speed, and special attacks almost identical.

However, what sets Lucina apart is the fact that the strength of her attacks is uniform along the blade. Marth's playstyle emulates the elegant swordplay of a fencer by dealing more damage when he strikes with the tip of his blade, but the damage Lucina deals is evened out. Thus, I think that Lucina will be much easier than Marth for novice players to play with.

Finally, Sakurai reveals that Lucina was very nearly an alternative costume option for Marth:

Initially, I had considered including Lucina as one of Marth's alternate costumes. After all, she has a close relationship with him in FE:A. In such cases, even if two characters' names and voices differ, as long as they function the same way, I assign them as alternate costumes. The Wii Fit Trainers, Villagers, and Robin are examples of this setup.

However, even though Lucina shares her physical stats and techniques with Marth, the characteristics of their attacks differ. When two such similar characters function in an even slightly different manner, I give them a separate spot on the roster since that will affect battle records and whatnot. In that sense, you could say she was very lucky to join the fray!

Source

So it seems like Robin was the main choice from the start, and Lucina was a lucky fluke. I don't really like his explanation of why Chrom isn't unique enough, especially when Lucina is an admitted clone. It's his job to make Chrom unique, and he could if he wanted to. (For starters, he doesn't have to use a sword.)

Oh well, maybe this will drum up more support for a possible DLC inclusion.

Might have to make a new avatar out of that Lucina picture. Undecided right now...

And it is disappointing she is basically easymode Marth. I don't see much reason to use her in that case. Still hoping Falcon fares better in SmashU than he did in Brawl, I want to use him again!

Huh... he had to give Chrom sword moves. It's just crazy to say that he doesn't need a sword. Yes, Chrom can use lances as a Great Lord, and he can change classes to Dread Fighter (Swords, Tomes and Axes), but that's clearly not the focus of that character and it'd be really odd to have Chrom actually be a Dread Fighter in Smash. The Falchion is his main weapon and there's an entire story about powering it up.

Chrom isn't really being compared to Lucina, but with Robin. Lucina is seemingly now confirmed to be a costume that got a few extra features in development and so was separated from her source. Chrom was dismissed as the actual Awakening representative in favor of Robin.

Been saying November 2014 since the announcement.
Free Amiibo is neat though, and makes absolutely sense.
How much will it cost a copy of the game, a GC adapter and a controller? I already have a couple of GC controllers but I want a new one, maybe even two.
At this point I hope they won't announce a limited 3DS XL because I would totally buy that too and I don't need this kind of shit.

The way Sakurai explained it makes Lucina sound like the cloniest of clones. I thought there would at least be some more differences besides the blade/tip mechanic.

Just watched the videos and there doesn't seem to be any difference in terms of landing lag from the E3/Best buy demo.

Fox's fair still has ridiculous lag considering it locks you into the move for so long, bowser's fair and dair are still really long, with the dair seemingly only a few frames (if that) less than the bowser bomb, kinda don't get why they basically made his down air the same as his aerial down special.

At one point I thought I saw Samus' bombs explode on contact but when I looked back it was just luck and they exploded a few frames before someone walked into the explosion.

Can't tell if there's dash dancing or crouch cancelling because obviously some random journalists aren't going to know what those are.

The loading is definitely faster so something's up, I was going to say maybe they were just playing it from the disc at E3 but it was installed in the gamespot vids, but I remembered it was installed on the wiiu at the treehouse and that had slow loading times.

I was thinking the same when the ALBW 3DSXL came out. Ended up selling my old 3DSXL xD

Will an Amiibo automatically unlock said character?

Maybe at a slight extra charge, Nintendo will distribute a party mode / tournament mode Amiibo that's just a glorified Smash stand that'll unlock all the characters. It won't save character data.

Now that I'm thinking about it, it also makes sense for them to reveal most (if not all) characters before launch because it would allow for increased Amiibo sales.

Do they do different things depending on where they are relative to the enemy?

Nah not really but Snake's C4 will stick to an enemy if you do it when (I think) colliding with their hitbox, it might jut be when you're near them though.

It might not even do that in vanilla Brawl actually... I haven't played it in so long.

Different characters as costumes is one of the more interesting titbits. Wonder if someone like Blood Falcon will be upgraded from reference costume to alt.

The thing that confuses me the most about Lucina originally being an alt is that sakurai outright stated that separate characters wouldn't be alt costumes.

I don't know why Lucina would have been such a special case, it literally does not compute.

He's one of the few that I would be OK to see as alt instead of character. Lucina as Marth's alt is so stupid it's actually scary to know that Sakurai thought about it.

Wonder if we'll be seeing anymore specific CG animation stuff from specific studios for newcomers, like Shaft with KI:U and the studio that did Awakening for Robin and Lucina.

Just occured to me that apart from the stinger at the end Pac-Man's trailer is entirely in-game

She was posing as Marth (with a mask and short hair) early on in FE:A.

But she isn't Marth, her Smash design is from after it was revealed she wasn't Marth in FE:A and she's not Marth.

What are players' thoughts about Mario so far? Can he keep up with all these new characters and fancy new mechanics?

Why would he not be able to? He's been the all rounder in every game, jack of all trades, master of none.

A bunch of characters having gimmicks doesn't really mean anything to him.

Did he say that in this dev cycle?

Or maybe the occam's razor approach is that sakurai will say whatever he feels like at the time he's giving the statement

Well...wouldn't say mario
and other melee vets
was well rounded in brawl in comparison to most of the newcomers lol.
