I'm going through the aforementioned scans now, and Sakurai dedicated an entire column to Little Mac's inclusion. I'd love to see that translated.
Wow, cool.

Is there somewhere that translates Sakurai's column for each issue? Would be great to check it out, even when it's not about Smash Bros.

You guys want a game starring Zelda? Well I have some great news for you :)

If this world was a good world, Impa would've replaced Shiek.

I thought it would've been obvious, she's far more timeless than Shiek, but apparently not.

Yup. I love how the character's role as Zelda's protector changes throughout the game. From caretaker to a mentor in OOT and in Skyward Sword a friend.

Sheik appeared in one game where she played a harp. She didn't really do anything. It was still Zelda who did stuff in the end.

The list of characters is pretty light on the villain side. I know they'll eventually add Ganondorf and King Dede but we need way more baddies then that.

I definitely agree that OoT is the most important/iconic/influential Zelda game.

Even more important than the very first one? You know, the one that started the series in the first place, where the base lore and idea of adventuring across the world to find dungeons and clear them out of enemies came from, as well as a lot of the aesthetic assets. Or A Link to the Past, the game that introduced about a thousand new things to the first game's stuff, and from which OoT took a lot from.

Wand of Gamelon is actually not as bad as people that never played it make it out to be. The cutscenes of these games are dumb, the controls are clunky, and the game generally not very well programmed, but it certainly is not the kind of abomination that the people who never played them say it is. Especially given the circumstances those games were produced in.
Zelda's Adventure is horrible though.

I grew up with a CD-i. I had the German dub for all of these games, which was even worse than the English cutscenes.

Smash fans can't handle change, it needs to be gradual. Start off small. Make impa a sheik clone or alt costume this game, make her substantially BETTER than sheik, and then cut sheik in the next game (or make sheik the impa costume).

As a greedy zelda fan, though, I want both.

I'm not sure it'd be so 1:1. SS Impa looks like two feet taller and 50 percent thinner. But I admittedly don't know their heights and weights, so -- *shrugs*

I'd be okay with a shorter Impa. And sure, make her thinner, just keep the hitbox the same. IT CAN BE DONE.

*Snake grunt* You hit close to home... but I don't think that's quite the same logic considering they're from completely different backgrounds.

I just think it's acceptable because Impa pretty much is the timeless Sheikah. She could have a cool moveset as well too and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing that, but I just think she not only represents the Zelda series better than Shiek, but the Sheikah as well.
I just don't get why Impa has to be to the exception of Sheik. If we can have multiple compelling takes on 'swordsman', why can't we have multiple compelling takes on ninja? It's not like fighting games haven't proven time and time again that's more than possible. Why get rid of Sheik at all?

And I'd say it's pretty much the same logic, as the main thing I parsed is that they're pretty close to each other in terms of archetype, so dumping one character only to paste it onto another strikes me as the same sort of thing as people just saying that Sami should get Snake's moveset, since they're both soldiers.

I wouldn't mind seeing an Impa alt at all (though would prefer a distinct character), but Sheik is a Smash mainstay and cutting her only to replace her with an identical but different character would be dumb.

Yeah, okay, I'll concede to you that OoT certainly was important for the Zelda franchise, but the most important? C'mon.

It was the first 3D game; as such, it set the precedent for all the forthcoming console Zelda games - they all play more or less like OoT. It gave us Ganondorf, who made it into two Smash games now instead of Ganon. On top of all that, it's always high up on "greatest video game of all time" lists. OoT has a ton of weight in not just Zelda's but Nintendo's history. Since Smash is in many ways a celebration of Nintendo's history, it makes sense to draw heavily from a game that's so important.

To be sure, those two are important. But OoT has become the standard for all the console games, and I think it's fair to say that the console games are the heart of the series. ALttP is closer to the standard for the handheld games - the secondary vein of the series.

Ice Climbers represent an entire franchise. Bit different than Sheik's situation with the Zelda series, where you have Link, Zelda and Ganondorf to carry the series.

But for the record, I like Sheik and want Sheik to stay.
Oh god, I thought it said Shulk for some reason!

Honestly, I think they should just make Impa a Lucina-style clone of Sheik. She should be her own slot. That way they can play with her height, weight, properties, etc. I definitely agree she's visually striking (SS Impa), and is deserving with all of her appearances throughout the series.

I agree.

Why can't I have Ibuki and Guy, and Maki. But Capcapom wont bring her back.

Maybe "important" isn't the best word for me to use, but since it's widely considered the best game in the series, and since every console Zelda game since 1998 has been modeled after its core gameplay, I do believe OoT tops the list. The original game and A Link to the Past are definitely 2 and 3, though.

I mean, if I had to choose one over the other, I'd take a clone sure. Shit, I'd take a totally new moveset. But if it's between an alt and nothing, gimme dat alt. Cause really, I feel like that's what it's probably between.

This email was before the video hit, and the leaker explained that while Shulk is for sure happening, he doesnt know when. He also said the other characters (Chrom and Chorus Men) are subject to change, as the information he knows on these characters were not clear enough, as Sakurai tried his best to keep them a secret.

Do we know that? Gematsu posted about that e-mail only after the video.

If Sheik wasn't included in Melee or Brawl, she would only have a super hardcore minority in her favor at this point. Like, even the Skull Kid fans would be looking down on her.

But she's grandfathered in at this point, so she's earned her spot. I'd say the same thing of a lot of characters. Like, would Captain Falcon even have a shot today if it weren't for Smash Bros. itself propelling him to all-star status?

There are seven F-Zero games and an anime. Even though the series is effectively "dead," I think Falcon could have been included at any point on account of F-Zero being one of those homegrown EAD IPs that Nintendo likes to whore out (Nintendo Land, Virtual Console, StreetPass Mii Plaza hat, et cetera).

Yes? He'd be a retro character for a once-successful series. If even Pit made it into Brawl, I think Captain Falcon could make it today.

Yeah, there aren't many (if any) Nintendo franchises with 7+ entries that don't have a rep in smash. His moveset, however, would totally be up in the air.

I'm not saying she has to be replaced, I'm saying I would've preferred her too. And I still don't think the Snake/Sami thing works. That would change up representations entirely. The reasons why I would like Shiek to be replaced by Impa is because I feel Impa is a better choice for a Zelda rep in general and the Sheikah in general. I'm not saying Shiek should be cut and have her moveset pasted on Greninja. I saying it because I think it benefits the Zelda franchise's representation as a whole, and show more of the series rather than seemingly being chained to OoT.

Shiek is just old news and I personally do not think she's necessary anymore especially once she was separated from Zelda. However like I said, I know she's important to Smash. A Zelda "Shiek" DOES need to be in the game, no doubt. And we are getting clones with Lucina, so if Impa could just be a clone and Shiek could stay that would be cool. I'm just saying that I doubt I'm the only one that thinks if it was the only way for Impa to get in, replacing a relic with a mainstay sounds preferable.

I’ve been snooping around on Japanese Twitter and found scans of all of Sakurai’s Famitsu columns dating back to the game’s reveal! They contain quite a few never before seen screens (including what looks to be Pac-Man’s neutral air, a body splash). I’m sure there’s a lot of interesting developmental insight, too, but there’s a way too much text to parse through. Maybe someone with a lot of time on their hands would be willing to translate some of it. Three or four of the columns were summarized by Kotaku, but none of them have been translated in their entirety.

(Interestingly enough, in the first column after last year’s E3, Sakurai talks about non-fighters like Wii Fit Trainer and compares them to Fox and Falcon in the original game.)

I don't have a ton of time to kill, but I would be happy to go through the articles and look for any interesting tidbits if you would be so kind as to send those articles my way. :)
