...they really aren't. A person who knows how to use items would be better than them in an items match. I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying.

I'm not referring to L-cancelling or wavedashing at all...

many high level players learn how to use, throw, and manipulate items with precision as spacing elements, as part of their characters sometimes. This is pure conjecture and it's not like these players have never touched items in their lives and don't get how they work.

New game excuse doesn't really work when something like the Pokéball or bumper has existed since the first game. The same old pick up and throw tactics still apply no matter how new the game is.

there's more to the proper utilization of items than 'does it have the same surface effect it did four games ago?' the game physics and character reactions which won't be picked up upon instantly also have a lot to do with how effectively you can wield items and aim/throw them

yeah, they got destroyed by other pros (that were *gasp* good with items as well)

also keep in mind Smash 4 is a new game, so even then they're not going to get that good at it so quickly

the video has the word "Evo" on the tittle and thats it, its not a video about evo. At least most of it. 0/10

Nintendo filmed it at evo, asked evo players questions... and yeah. 2/10evo :p

It still means the acknowledge evo, which is way way more than they've done in the past, and a full 180 from temporarily banning melee from evo last year.

yes, assuming the person who knows how to use items is also a serious player that is fundamentally solid in other areas
That was the assumption I was going on, yes. My bad for not stating so
That is so hilariously wrong.

Players at that skill level would never let you get items that would win them the game. They would get combod to oblivion. Once you are off the edge of the stage, you are dead.

Those players also know what the items do. They have played smash much more than just about every other group of smasher if not by far the most.

They only remove the items because it adds actual randomness to the game. No one wants a 10k tournament to be decided over who go Groudon in a poke ball.
My mistake for not clarifying the skill level of a player as an example.

The bolded is where you're wrong. Many of them don't actually.

I know how competitive smash works. I know why they play the way they do. I play 1v1 with no items. I also play with items all stages* (*= as long as I don't think the stages are annoying lol).

I'm just saying that they are the best under certain circumstances. There are undoubtedly better players in different circumstances.

I didn't say they never touched items. I'm saying many of them are not very keen on item usage. It was very clear during the Smash invitational and then there was that friedly recently that I forgot what it is called (it had character bidding and all stages).

I remember nearly all of them being pretty inept at handling items. Chucking items in random directions, totally ignoring ATs...it was pretty sad. Clearly, these were pros in melee combat only, not items combat.

42. stg.yoster/dx - Melee Yoshi's Story Stage
43. stg.zoness - Star Fox Stage

remember to take all of this with a grain of salt, folks.

I know this list was proven fake, but I think Sky Road's a Sonic Lost World stage:
It's too similar to Windy Hill for my liking, & Casino Night Zone'd be a better choice, so I'm glad this is fake.

And wasn't it Game Informer that argued Harry Potter should get in, or was that some other terrible clickbait website?

You know what I'm pro at? Coin battle. Number one in the world baby!*

*no one else plays it.

If they bring it back and include it for Online Modes, I'd be willing to fight you for that title.

I'm glad we have different opinions for discussion.

I would seriously give any non competitive smasher 500$ if they could heat M2K or Mang0 in a standard rules (no modified anything) game of smash where they were trying in front of me.

It wouldn't ever ever happen.

AFAIK, it was a pretty good mix of Brawl and Melee players with like... one PM player.

42. stg.yoster/dx - Melee Yoshi's Story Stage

yes... YES

Standard rules as in turn the game on a fresh save file, go to battle, press go?
What rules are they, to be exact? I'm curious. If pokeballs and bobombs/capsules are a part of that, the randomness that can be produced from those items alone could help one lucky player beat a pro player.

You know what I'm pro at? Coin battle. Number one in the world baby!*

What happens if you play coin battle on

A little late to the discussion, but I don't understand the logic of someone's "dream roster" excluding characters that are already confirmed. And frankly... we're quite lucky no one on the internet is handling the roster based on everything I've seen.

So I think the argument for people who don't really follow Nintendo or are disillusioned with Nintendo is that the new character picks aren't "iconic" Nintendo characters to them. This dovetails in to one of the bigger Nintendo complaints, that they aren't making new IPs and characters, so every new Smash Bros. is going to have characters that they consider reaching because, in their eyes, Nintendo output has just been Mario and Zelda for the last generation.

To someone that doesn't follow Nintendo and never played Fire Emblem Awakening, announcing two characters from the game might be a "Really, you do this but don't have (insert character from youth) yet?" thing.
Of course, then they would go back to saying that Nintendo only ever adds characters from one or two franchises because they don't have a vast repertoire of IPs. Nintendo is always doomed.

Like new save file rules.

Any lucky streak of items wouldn't come up often enough to make a different. As soon as a combo starts the non competitive smasher is dead. The pro player might not even lose a single stock in the 8 minute game unless he gets bored.

I would consider myself a solid player with a good grasp on Smash Bros. mechanics and strategies, and I play on all stages with items on. I guess I'm a mythical non-casual but also non-competitive.

I'd lose to a competitive smasher, no doubt. I just don't have the time to play the game to purely get good at it. I'm not putting down people who do, but I don't have time to do the same.

The point is, I don't dedicate sports-level amounts of time to this game, but I play Brawl with my friends at least twice weekly. Smash is fun for me, and I think I'm at least average levels of good. So yes, a middle ground does exist.
I'm in that same skill zone, though with Smash 4 I might look into the competitive scene a bit since it's a new scene to jump into.

What was that match type in Melee where you were somehow judged on how stylish you were? The one where the announcer shouted DEE-CISION! I could never figure that mode out.

Is this what I'm thinking of?

it was the one where everytime u hit an opponent coins flew out and you collected em highest point wins at the end of the match (if i remember correctly it could be played timed or with stock) its actually probably one of my favorite casual modes lol

Yes, that was bonus. Brawl removed all the bonus titles so that mode was removed sadly. Coin battle is just when coins burst from anyone taking damage and you have to collect the most.

Well, it's Nintendo Minute AT Evo. They sat there and spoke to Nintendo fans about Nintendo tournaments and their hands on experiences with the game. I don't understand what's wrong with that. What's 0/10 about that? I really liked all the interviews.

Actually, they talked to very well known Smash players about Evo and Smash 4.
I'm not sure what else they were expected to do.

I never could understand why the little bonus titles were removed from Brawl. They were such a cool little feature (I remember trying almost every match to get Bob-Omb Squad.) But that Bonus Mode was something else. Total mystery to me how the game figured out a winner.

pretty much lol

It is a player by player basis. As for your examples, I think M2K would handle it better than Mang0 just because M2K is better at adapting and plays multiple games while Mang0 is just limited to Melee.

wouldnt SR338 be a Metroid 2 stage? Its fake but I'd love a Metroid 2 stage. The wario taxi stage would be odd since most of the stages are based off handheld titles and Wario has a slew of them from debuting on handhelds to having two of his own successful spinoffs start on handhelds (wario land and wario ware).

I know who they were. But you're right, I should have picked my words better. Because reaching out to actual competitive Smash players and aiding in their widespread recognizability while bolstering the awareness of the scene in general is very different than "fans".

Agreed. Mang0 is fucking great, but I find M2K just more versatile.

You mean the nerf?

Snake needed a nerf like nobody besides Meta Knight

I like some of the changes, he's riskier to play and his tilts aren't OP as fuck anymore. I feel like his air game is a lot better now, my playstyle with Snake now relies on using his up-B as a combo starter/shine of sorts, cancelling air moves into tilts and grabs (I'm telling yall, set the Y button up as 'Grab' and you can aerial, cancel, and attack/grab right out of cancelling by pressing one face button three times), and setting mines on the opponent for dem ceiling gimps

If i remeber correctly, what i liked to do in coin battle (maaany years ago) was to purposely get hit by all the big attacks so i could pick all the coins that were coming out of my body :P (you didnt lose coins by getting hit i think!?, so the coins that came out of you body were shining new coins. You only lost coins (half of them) when you died!?).

wait are the bonus things you guys talking about those points you get at the end of a match? like freezie ko and stuff or am i remembering wrong

yeah you lost half of em when u died we tended to run fd+pokeball coin matches and watch as the chaos engulfed us with enteis and lugias it was the best lol
