Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

What I mean "baby" is a product of Nintendo-Square collab. How can Square make SMRPG if Nintendo didn't allow it and how would Geno be introduced if SMRPG wasn't created? :p

It does not really need to be a playable character, though I would love it to be. Even a trophy of sorts is fine. But of course, it's still up to Square to even allow it. And Sakurai is not shy of putting the usual obscure things from other franchises in Smash.

From how I remember the development process going, the collaboration went only as far as Miyamoto being a creative director on the Square team who developed the game.
All the characters created for SMRPG are Square's creation, not Nintendo's.

And in those almost 20 years, including several collaborations between Nintendo and Square-enix, including several Mario games developed by Square-enix that feature Square-enix characters, SMRPG has, to my memory, received a shoutout twice. Once Geno was shown as tutorial host in a minigame in one of the Mario & Luigi games. And the second time was one SMRPG music track being remixed in one of the Itadaki Street games.

That's it. There's been several ample opportunities for Nintendo and Square-enix to revive the SMRPG characters with the Square-developed Mario crossovers, but they never took the chance. Square rather put in FF and DQ characters.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: There's a lot of characters that I'd like to see rep SE, but, if we were to be realistic, there's only one character they'd probably allow in the game.

Yeah, and Sakurai would probably laugh them out of Namco-Bandai's offices, which is why we're not getting a Square-Enix character.

Wait, we're talking Squeenix reps and the first one mentioned wasn't Neku?

For shame...

See people complain that Smash is getting "too animU" lol

I wouldn't protest if he's ever considered. One of the best SE characters ever produced since Square-Enix was conceived.

Man seeing Captain Falcon just reminds me of how disappointing Fox and Diddy's models are. Like them, Captain Falcon has basically the same design as Brawl, but his model is clearly completely new. Fox and Diddy look like they've just been flat out ported from Brawl and slightly touched up. Somehow not even Kirby looks as samey as they do.
Captain Falcon looks amazing. His poses seem more natural than Brawl's, if that makes any sense.

Fox is horrible in comparison.

Probably already been mentioned but this is the one SE character I'd love to see:

Crono.jpg

Really anyone from the series, but Crono would have to represent first.

Best chance was Mario 3-on-3.

Seriously. Developed by SE, had Final Fantasy cameos...based around teams of three...

Mario, Geno, Mallo. BOOM. Perfect oppurtunity.

I'm sure I noticed this a while ago, but I totally forgot to notice it recently. That's a very awesome and great point.

I don't like that the stocks are BELOW the profile picture and percent, though.

That is a small thing, but it was better before. Not sure that the headshots are need.

I still think they're doing some voodoo magic on Fire Emblem. When they revealed Marth I was shocked at how good he looked, same with Ike. Fox looks so shitty, lol.

To what end? They have no reason to promote the XIII line anymore. If they were doing something for a promo they'd probably try to spread awareness for KH3, FFXV, or Bravely 2.

Super Mario RPG is eh.

Paper Mario, The Thousand Year Door, and Superstar Saga are all better. I'd rather Paper Mario before any other RPG character.

But he kind of switches stances. We see clear indication that his jabs, at least, are affected by the last magic he used.
In what way? Do you mean when he switches to the Levin sword? Actually, I'd like to know if there's a way to manually switch or if it only pops up when you exhaust your tomes.

By the way, I'm basing my disappointment off this article: http://www.gonintendo.com/s/233268-...-bros-wii-u-3ds-why-chrom-didn-t-make-the-cut

Sakurai said:
Robin appears in the game as a Tactician and functions much like a Mystic Knight (note: FF terminology, but equivalent to magic swordsman). I thought to utilize his all-around nature by assigning swordplay to his Smash attacks and magic tomes to his special attacks--that is, allow him to use magic.

His neutral special is thunder magic that grows stronger the larger you charge it. He uses fire magic for his side special, and wind magic for recovery as his up special. Although Robin doesn't use dark magic in FE:A, I decided to assign it as his down special. It isn't the first time I've given moves to a character that they don't use in their respective game in order to capture certain aspects of the original title.

I also implemented the system used in FE:A, in which tomes break after overuse. Likewise, I included a similar system for the Levin Sword, which breaks after a certain number of uses. However, both the tomes and the Levin Sword will quickly regenerate after a set period of time.

Yeah, now that I think about it, why didn't SE develop a new Mario RPG for the Wii or DS when they were developing Hoops and Sports Mix? Like, the moment was perfect right then and there. Even if it didn't have to do with SMRPG, just a new console Mario RPG by SE would've been a really big deal at the time.

I think it would be awesome if Paper Mario were playable, probably would be a very unique character.

... but SMRPG is GOAT >:(

Off topic, but it's been confirmed that Palutena got a new VA right? I knew she sounded off, but I was sure I read it somewhere that a tweet was tweeted about it.

:(

Exactly. And they did not take that opportunity and opted to include Final Fantasy characters and, in the Itadaki Street games, Dragon Quest characters instead. You wanna guess why?

The "realistic" looking humans look absolutely fantastic. The Fire Emblem guys, Zero Suit Samus, Palutena, the non-Toon Zelda characters, Falcon, Little Mac, even Wii Fit Trainer. They all look incredibly nice. Only Pit looks a bit TOO animu for my tastes.
And it's not even some sort of bias against animals - Donkey, Diddy, Yoshi and the Pokemon also look super awesome.

It's just that Smash is going after Star Fox Command's art style, and that art style is super extremely awful and dumb and doesn't look like animals at all. Plus, for Smash 4, they're very lazy with the fur textures on Fox as well.
I don't think I would mind Fox as much if they went SF64 3DS's head and Smash 4's body/clothes, plus not making his fingers look like turds.

I didn't know what Dragonball was before playing Chrono. He will always be superior. Quit hating on CT, bastards.

Or just make it Frog, that guy rocks too.

No, in the introduction video, we see him twice use either a tilt or jab attack, that finishes with a magic attack. First one is fire, the other one is wind, and they match the color of the Tome he has out at the time, but don't match any of the spells mapped to his 4 specials and don't get the name of the spell called out. In addition, we see that when he does a grab, it has a lightning affect, and he has the Yellow Tome out at the time.

The color of the Tome only changes when you use a special, so until you use another one, your non-smash attacks appear to use the magic of whatever your current Tome is. It might just be for jab finishers and throws, but if that's the case, it appears that his jab with the Fire Tome is actually different from his jab with the Wind Tome even before the finisher (although with the Fire Tome, it's possible he did a tilt then a jab).

Edit: Levin Sword comes out when you do Smash Attacks, and you can also Smash in the air to use the Levin Sword instead of the Bronze Sword. Levin Sword and Tomes are exhausted separately. Sorry, didn't read that part earlier, but that info was in the Famitsu article that came out later.

Apparently the Levin sword is just activated whenever you do a smash attack and has it's own 'resource' that runs out with usage. When it 'breaks' you are unable to use it again until an amount of time has passed or you die. It has no connection to your tome usage :o

However, even though Lucina shares her physical stats and techniques with Marth, the characteristics of their attacks differ. When two such similar characters function in an even slightly different manner, I give them a separate spot on the roster since that will affect battle records and whatnot. In that sense, you could say she was very lucky to join the fray!

Lucina is lucky that she is so easy.

So I got a friend of mine to translate one of Sakurai's scans. Nothing really new.

This page is talking about how the ranking will work. I'm not exactly sure what it says (I'll ask some one) but from I understand that you will get a world ranking. So let's say your world ranking is 10,000 you have a higher score than 10,000 people in what ever game time you are 10,000 in. Instead of have a #1 spot they decided to show how many people you are ahead of because they feel it sucks knowing how far behind your are from number one. The next part is about two game modes. Enjoy mode and Gachi (Gachi means serious in Japanese) mode. Enjoy mode will have a lot of items and levels with a bunch of stuff going on (I assume) while Gachi mode will the a "flat"/"even" level where it's more skill focused(once again I assume).
Imagine being that one person with no one behind him. That has to be worse than knowing how many people are in front of you.

You would think that there would be a bunch of people who buy the game, get online once, and do pretty much nothing that would inflate the numbers so that no remotely active user has a score of 0.

although the thought of it is indeed hilarious

I don't see what's disappointing about this...?
You'd have to go back to my original post to understand:
Disappointed Robin isn't the stance switching character I imagined. I don't know why I did, considering the game. Still it would have been rad if he had one special dedicated to switching magics and that would effect the attributes of all his other specials like recovery, side b, etc
I was naively expecting a different sort of character without any real basis. I mean, he still seems cool, but I had something like Gen's stance switching in mind (although unlike Gen it would change only the specials instead of all attacks).

Ahhhh, I see what you mean. I hadn't noticed that. That does sound pretty cool actually! It adds another layer of complexity to the character if you want it. Which tomes have throws that send you farther, which one has throws that do more damage, which tomes have good up tilts, etc.

Nice, still hyped.

Ohhhh, now I get it. I thought the sword worked completely differently than it does lol. Interesting. Sounds like you'll have a few things to keep in mind when playing Robin.
