Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Yeah, Chrom was easily the most boring of the 'leaked' and frequently requested characters. Robin was inspired.

tumblr_n8y05ufF0Z1saj8y5o1_1280.png

What characters would even be in the next Smash game after this to generate hype? I feel like you can only go down from Pac Man, Mega Man and Miis. After this, additions to the roster would start to feel like scraping the bottom of the barrel aside from maybe 3-4 characters. Assuming they aren't already in this game, Ridley, King K Rool and Mewtwo would be the only big ones I can think of.

Don't forget the next game will be 6-ish years down the line - new IP could surface, or dormant / fading properties could have a resurgence as with Fire Emblem or Punch-Out. Ridley, Dixie and the Inklings seem likely, but depending on their future roles, Takamaru, Captain Toad, Impa, Chibi-Robo, Sukapon and such might show up. And that's discounting series with minimal representation - I doubt Pikmin will have a solitary rep in the next game, for example.

I'm not seeing any of those doing much for hype levels. Especially compared to characters like Sonic and Mega Man.
I think Inklings will be hype by the time the next Smash rolls around, but yeah, I didn't make those suggestions with the notion they'd be the same level as Sonic or Mega Man.

I have a question about SSBU.

I just bought a Wii-U and this will be the first Smash game I've ever owned.

I have a Gamecube controller.

Is the Gamecube controller actually better for Smash or do people just use it because that's what they are used to?

What we're used to, I'd say. And I am a very adamant GCN controller or bust person where I was very sad about the lack of GCN support. You have to think- we've been playing this series with that controller since 2001. Kids born in 2001 are going to be in high school next year.

I feel like an old man saying that...
at least I'm not yelling at a cloud yet, just Sakurai.

I'm really curious to know what kind of custom options Robin might have. His move-set already seems so diverse and eclectic that compounding his moves with different properties makes him even more exciting... if a bit overwhelming.
Yeah, I'm also curious to see if there's any diversion when it comes to custom moves between Lucina and her 'source' :3

Inklings are already more hype to me than Sonic or Megaman. Not everyone hypes over the same things :P

Advance Wars character
Professor Layton
Isaac
Startropics Mike
Kamek
Vaati
Shulk

Oh, I just thought of one character who, if not in this game, would make huge shockwaves in the Smash community in the next

RIDLEY

There's one character that would get Smash fans talking after all of the hoopla over him, lol

They can scrape the bottom of the barrel all they like. Let's go crazy. Two Advance Wars reps, the mech from Xenoblade X, Vivian from Paper Mario, Dry Bones, Rundas, Saki

Anna

People said the same thing after Brawl. I mean, Robin, Palutena, Rosalina, Wii Fit Trainer, Shulk (potentially), Rhythm Heaven Character (potentially), Greninja, Villager. Those are all big names that have been introduced relatively recently (save Villager). There will be big name characters that are introduced before the next Smash.

Just off the top of my head, of characters that are around now?

The three you mentioned, Inklings, Toad, Impa (SS please), Bandana Dee (spear-wielding one), King Hippo (or another Punch Out character), Waluigi (kind of serious), Dillon, Mallo, Hades, Medusa, Dark Pit (Pit clone), Dixie Kong, Kamek, Baby Bros. (Ice Climber like character with Baby Mario & Luigi), Chibi Robo, Jill & Drill Dozer, Saki, Isa, Dark Samus, Captain Syrup, Additional WarioWare rep, W101 rep.

Not to mention the new inevitable Pokemon.

Speaking of which, these would be great choices for alt colours if Anna ever got in. It's a shame trophies only have the one colour scheme.

Nintendo just has to keep making new IPs so there's more good characters to add.

This is true. Strictly on a personal level though, being an adult now doesn't allow me as much time for gaming (at least not without feeling guilty) so I'm hitting a point where new characters really don't mean much to me because I rarely get to play their games. The reveal trailer was the first time I ever saw Greninja, for instance. But in a general sense, yeah, there will always be brand new characters to toss in.

I'm more curious for Samus.

I'm thinking an ideal situation where she can use all her animations and have the same general powers, but made to use her massive arsenal from her games.

Neutral:
Ice Beam - Slower Charge, has a slight AoE of freeze when hitting an enemy
Plasma - Quicker Charge, charge affects distance and travel speed, does less damage on fully charged shots, shots can fire through enemies, enemy doesn't flinch on hit

Down:
Power Bomb - Can only drop one bomb at a time. Explodes in a moderately sized explosion that sucks enemies around into it.
Morph Ball - Trade an offensive special for a mobility one. Moves quickly around with a tiny hitbox, but no bombs.

Side:
Ice/Defusion Missiles - Ice Missiles don't home into enemies, but freeze slightly. Defusion missiles travel slower than supers, but freeze in a medium sized AoE on impact with a player or the stage.
Flamethrower - Has no alternate between super or regular, fires a flamethrower that works like Bowser's, but flames come out faster and travel further and more "straight" if that makes sense, think of Metroid Prime. Can use the same animations as missiles because of Metroid Prime.

Up:
Space Jump - No damage, but makes Samus jump higher in screw attack animation (no particle effect).
Screw Attack Prime - "Hop" in the air, and can be used 3 times before needing to recharge by landing. Covers more horizontal distance than Screw Attack, but not much, if any, vertical height.

Trailer for the next Smash:

- RIDLEY
- Koopalings
- Inklings
- Wonder Red
- Takamaru
- Bomberman *

...would be hype

* in this timeline, Konami dusts off their acquired IP and gives Bomberman the AAA treatment by diverting funds that would've gone toward new Metal Gear and Castlevania titles

You know, Adeleine is an actual character from the series who isn't just a smartly dressed Waddle Dee and has great potential for a unique moveset.

Maybe by the next game he'll have a good recent design they can pull from...No Roidley.

Nintendo should do Ridley a solid by making another Metroid game that features a more human-sized Ridley. That way Sakurai can more easily incorporate him as a playable character. That's called forward thinking, children!

I'm not denying that there are still characters to throw in. I'm saying that you can't match the prestige/popularity of Pac-Man, Mega man, Charizard, Sonic, Villager, Miis etc with many of the yet to be included characters. Obviously you could add all those characters you listed in the next one, but Captain Syrup and Bandana-Dee aren't going to set the internet afire like any characters already included.

For WarioWare id say Mona or that Cricket guy.

Jimmy T > Ashley & 9 Volt > Cricket & Mona. Each one of them is god tier though.

Alternatively this is what I saw from the picture after realizing her boots look like sneakers:

Stuff like this is why I love this fandom even when it makes me wonder if I'm too old for some of its shit. :lol

I will always hate the notion of Smash character inclusions beginning to "scrape the bottom of the barrel". We still don't have playable characters from a lot of Nintendo franchises made more visible through Smash and we also don't know what new properties Nintendo will develop or focus on going forward.

Nintendo just has to keep making new IPs so there's more good characters to add.

Inklings are guaranteed to be in the next game if they aren't DLC for this one.

I respectfully disagree. None of the newcomers this time around aside from Pac-Man and Mega Man are hugely iconic and have much star power, but everyone is excited about them. There will always be characters that people will be excited to see in Smash.

She has a paintbrush, and anything she paints comes to life. I think that'd be more interesting than a spear, but I'd like a spear wielder as well.

I think if a new Kirby rep comes to be, it should certainly be her. Literally the only reason I have a fondness for Bandana Dee is because of the spear-copter :p

Adeline would be cool only if they go full Chalk Zone and let her paint attacking and supporting characters into existence, make holes in the dimension with her canvas that she can warp through or kick people into and create zip lines a la Canvas Curse to use for recoveries.

...

I WANT THIS RIGHT NOW.

Also, Chalk Zone opening is god tier. That guitar.

Sure, myself and many people are excited simply to have a wide variety of fighters available. I'm just interested in where they go from here in terms of characters that would get people from a broader, more casual audience excited because I know even some of my gamer friends, upon being told about some of the newcomers, were either completely indifferent or hadn't heard of them before. I just don't know who to add that isn't already in that would intrigue that crowd.

Edit- to be clear, I'm personally really excited to be getting more of the secondary and supporting characters. I'd love some Paper Mario reps and Warioware characters or even someone else from F-Zero. I'm just at a loss in regards of who the next Smash's Mewtwo, Sonic, or Mega Man would be. The megaton character, as it were.

You raise a very valid point.

Maybe... Cloud Strife, if FFVII is finally remade and on a Nintendo console? :-P

Or maybe... Angry Birds

*shudders convulsively*

Oh man, I wish you had made this observation when I made my boots appreciation post (linked for everyone's convenience), because you're spot-on -- her boots evoke the under-armor leg sleeves and the shoes look like high-end sneakers you'd see on some b-ball players, which really just speaks to that vigorous sense of athleticism her boots embody.

i was going to post it but I was like nah that's kinda out there. lol. Yea when I see those boots I definitely see an athletic feel to them and it fits Lucina well. Her overall design is great.

I think that ship has sailed honestly. And it's due in part to Nintendo's failure to cultivate interest in new IPs over the past generation or two. But I think it's also due in part to people just not playing many games outside of their usual interests.

I really hope the next Fire Emblem features the same artist (Yusuke Kozaki).

I considered Cloud, but if SE or Nintendo were to strike while the iron was hot in regard to getting Cloud in Smash or even doing a FFVII remake... that time was around when Brawl came out on both accounts. Anecdotally, it really seems to me that the fervor for both things has died down over the past 5 years. Cloud would still be a big deal, but if he were added in Brawl it would have been colossal.

Consider this: anyone who is 17 or younger now wasn't alive when FFVII came out. And by the next smash that will likely apply to everyone 23 and younger.

Sure, but whenever they release a remake, there'll always be a gaggle of kids going through their angsty phase who will lap up those zippered belts like I lap up Lucina's boots

This is true, and I'd still consider Cloud a frontrunner for the next game's "megaton" newcomer. Albeit an unlikely one.

Oh, here's an idea -- Resident Evil characters.

Between REmake, Zero, RE4, RE4: Wii Edition, the Chronicles games, Mercs 3D, and Revelations... There's enough there even if no new RE games come out between now and then.

Didn't like the artstyle at first but I started to see its charm over time. I'd be ok with more! And yea the DLC artist also gave us some interesting takes on the series and some were excellent.

That is a good question. I definitely want to see more secondary and obscure characters on the roster because it could lead to them getting more exposure along with adding ver unique fighters. Although, I can imagine how large the roster will be if Sakurai tries to best himself once again.

That's not a bad idea at all. Would be a bit tricky given Sakurai's policy not to have any realistic guns, but he made Snake work so...

I just popped in a little KI:U to remind myself what Sakurai designed stuff is like and hngggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Every now and then I'll replay Chapter 14 of Uprising... I'll crank up the 3D, and when the doors open at the start and the laser blasts out of my screen, and the guitar music starts, and everyone is fighting everywhere, and you're just thrown into the mix, and Palutena is whispering in your ear with her velvety voice, and Thanatos and Phosphora are beating the shit out of each other, and Viridi is whining, and Hades is taking cheap shots at everyone, and everyone's talking about dental insurance and Hades hitting on the ladies... Man.

I bow to you, Sakurai. Uprising is his masterpiece. I hope he changes his mind and makes a sequel.

I always thought a fun idea for a RE character would be for them to lure roaming zombies toward them and trick them into biting their opponents instead, lol

I love you, man. In a Platonic way
D'aww, I wuv you too, wittle Foxie :-3
