Casting agency says ad was "innocent mistake":

But we spoke with a rep for Sande Alessi Casting who tells us ... the ad was an "innocent mistake" -- and when it comes to casting the "poor" people, they're also looking for women of various skin tones and body types.

As for people who claim the A,B,C,D grouping system was racist -- Sande Alessi Casting says it's the usual method they use to look for different types of people for any project and it wasn't meant to offend anyone.

Is this uncommon for Hollywood casting? I've always wondered how they casted for "fat, ugly person" roles. Fucking brutal.

Universal distances itself from 'Compton' casting:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Universal Pictures and the filmmakers behind the planned N.W.A. biopic are distancing themselves from an offensive casting announcement for the film.

The company said in a statement late Thursday that "the filmmakers ... did not approve and do not condone the information in this casting notice. We regret and sincerely apologize for being in any way associated with the offensive descriptions it contained."

Sande Alessi Casting posted an open call earlier this week that sought women in four categories. "A girls" were described as "the hottest of the hottest" and could be of any ethnicity. "B girls" were to be "light-skinned," whereas "D girls" were "African-American... Poor, not in good shape. Medium to dark skin tone."

Gawker.com quoted the casting call in an article Thursday. The casting company has since removed the announcement from its Facebook page.

A woman who answered the phone at Sande Alessi Casting on Thursday declined comment and would not identify herself.

Universal has not said if it is still working with the casting company.
The Sande Alessi Casting website shows it is still inviting African-American men and women to audition as extras for "Straight Outta Compton" at an open call later this month.

This is how they used to cast for R&b and rap video vixens in the late 90s to early 2000s, sans the need to explicitly state C & D grade women. Some stipulations were imposed by the artists themselves. With an emphasis On light Skin, smdh

I saw this a couple days ago and almost immediately thought F. Gary Gray was regressing straight back to his music video days with this shit.

Kinda confused here. Is this like a ranking system, or are these just categories for the types of girls they're looking for?

I have also wondered this.

You see roles where they need someone ugly, overweight etc to be the ass end of all jokes, you wonder what language they use to advertise the role.

I've always wondered, in a movie when someone is required to play the part of a large / ugly person, how do they cast for it?

IF the role requires very large people, how do you screen for that without offending people?

Well when it goes hot -> not good shape, light -> dark, not poor -> poor, you can bet it's also a ranking system.

Wow, that is fucke up. I wonder how common that kind of casting is.

I've always thought they were pretty direct about it, I don't see any advantage for them by beating around the bush. If they're direct, I imagine they'd get people who are comfortable with their appearance.

something tells me they just ask for fat/ugly people and don't give a fuck

I don't see the problem here. Hollywood must have a structured way of casting their actors and actresses in order to fit into roles that make sense.

You could just as likely see A) male actors with large musculature - must be over 5'10. Where is the outrage for this? Some people are born ectomorphs and short. This is just the way things are. Some black women are born with a lighter skin color.

If we don't use a tier system for blacks, then we shouldn't use a tier system for male leading roles, either. Additionally, If we don't use a tier system for blacks, how will we know which are the 'good' blacks for the roles? There are good blacks, bad blacks, and blacks in between.

Now, if you'll excuse me. I have to go to the Israel thread and find a way to defend the IDF. Those hospitals were stockpiling rockets, goddamnit!

So I guess it should just be an open casting call. Let's disregard whatever "artistic vision" (and I use that term super loosely here) the director is going for, since racism.

Next thread: "George Washington biopic calls for a WHITE CIS MALE, WTF?"
