Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

I remember that, because everyone kept saying "To me, it felt like [X]" and you kept going "I PLAYED IT ALL DAY, I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE."

And your counter-point a month later is going "These people agree with me, where's my apology!" I've never actually parsed whether or not you're playing a character like Astrolad or Anihawk but I hope for your sake you are or this is kind of sad.

No, the point in posting that was because for some strange reason many of the hands on impressions during E3 didn't really describe in detail how SSB4 played beyond the vague "between SSBM and SSBM" description.

Not saying there weren't any that weren't clear on it, but GameXplain is the first one that I've encountered to provide some clarified impressions.

Yeah, this is the N64 manual

I know I've seen it, I'm not doubting it, I just would like to see it again as proof for others when that argument pops up

It was definitely in the Prima guide that came out way back when for the game. That guide was how I found out about smooth landing/Z-Cancelling as it was called in Smash 64. I also do remember it being referenced on the Smash 64 webpage but that's seemingly lost in the sea of cyberspace.

Edit: Actually there might have been a bit on it in a Nintendo Power issue from that time too.

I saw it on the old Smash Bros website using the Wayback Machine

YES! That's where I remember seeing it!

Thanks. Lemme find the old english site. It was there as well I believe.

Edit: Z cancelling was originally called smooth landing

FAKE

"Leakers" need to pay more attention to Smash news. There's no more Pokemon newcomers, Greninja was the only one according to the round table.

No, Sakurai just said he had a space for an "X/Y" Pokemon. To me that doesn't say that a space for another Pokemon wasn't available as well, like one for Mewtwo if he returns, or a RS-remake Pokemon.

I'm starting to read the replies to the leak. Wow at the professionalism of SmashBoards moderation:

I was the one who told him to post his stuff back here after locking his thread in General Discussion.

I PMed him a few questions in the same message, one of them asking about Chrom and the Chorus Men. Although he said his source has no info one way or another about the Chorus Men, he disconfirmed Chrom.

Is there any reason to believe this leak, or is it just fun speculation?

Regardless, cutting Rayman because of animosity seems unlikely to me. I don't think Sakurai gives much of a shit about company relations and would likely fight back to keep a character he wanted in in the game.

Finally, internet is back. Typhoon didn't do much damage but screwed up phone lines and such, ruining internet since Thursday.

Man, imagine living for four days without the internet.

L-Cancelling was intentional. It's even in the smash 64 instructions.

Also, did you know that combos were unintended for street fighter, but later adopted and intentionally put into the games?

I don't believe L-cancelling was intended as an actual feature either. it was just one of those development quirks to allow people to shield and defend faster after landing and people learned to abuse it to cancel air move recovery. I've never seen any official documentation about it either. The only technique that I've seen acknowledged in Melee that requires near-frame perfect input is Power Shield, but outside of that there's no mention of L-cancelling anywhere.

And yes, I know about Street Fighter. The difference with that is throughout SF2's development, the system features and changes were done with a competitive direction in mind and combos were the perfect thing to embrace and add to the game to make SF2 a deeper game. Sadly, Smash is quite the opposite and Sakurai seems to frown upon complexity, which is why I don't believe they're going to even attempt to bring back L-cancelling.

Moving to Japan soon so it's gonna take that long to get it sorted. I'll probably work out a phone plan before then though

Do you think Smash would've been better or worse if they kept it down to three special moves like in the original?

Was thinking about this today (for a little fan project I'm doing...movesets for a imaginary "Sega Smash Brothers"), and I think it would've been interesting if, for example, they just kept the B-Special.

Worse. More options is a good thing, and it feels really natural.

Worse, of course.

Definitely worse. The new side specials in Melee blew my mind as a kid

I love options! Side specials were great!

It was originally called Smooth Landing, and it was intended as an actual feature. Here's a partial archive of the original smash site. You can't go to the page, but you can scroll down the Advanced Techniques tab and see it there.

What's funny is I heard he doesn't even have that anymore.
So Bubsy's in the game? Sweet! Hope they bring back this preorder offer:

I'll certainly make the MEOWST of it!

Some people and Sceptile... I don't know how anyone gets the idea Sakurai feels obligated to include a Grass-type to round out a trio of starter reps.

I sincerely hope people think he could be in more because of Ruby/Sapphire being redone rather than that. That's facepalm worthy haha

The "leaker" also said that there is literally a setting under options to turn wavedashing on and off, so uh

Just supplying information to people that may not be able to access the site

Only if he smuggles into the roster inside Ridley's belly.
LOL

How quickly do you guys think the Smash OTs will settle down once the games come out? With all of the characters known, I'd imagine we'll see a sharp decline in posting. Should be interesting to see where this leaves the WiiU version by comparison to the lead-up to the 3DS version.

I'm so curious as to what impact that will have on this community

GREAT! How'd you get that link to work btw? I couldn't figure out how to get to the page.

I'll be saving this page for future use now.

I actually googled "smash bros smooth landing" and found a link to it on a random forum. n_n; I got lucky.

The leaker didn't specify every cut/returning veteran, but here's my best at a visual representation of the leak for those asking about it

Roster_zpse7b324e8.png

I don't believe it's real, but that's not a horrible roster. 5 cuts from Brawl though, 4 of which were totally unique movesets, which would be a real shame. Especially Jiggly Puff; she's one of my favorite characters to play as when she's actually half decently balanced. I could go without Lucas considering custom movesets, especially if he was somehow a Ness alt, and Snake is understandable, but I'm disappointed with how likely it is Squirtle and Ivysaur will be cut too. They have a lot of potential if just reworked slightly.

Everything bullshit about the leak, imo:

Hello everyone
My name is Jeremiah Adams, though I would prefer if you guys refer to me as my username, "Miahstorm"
My good friend (Who's name I shall keep anonymous) is an Audio Engineer who worked formerly for Namco, specifically he worked on the Super Smash Brothers for Wii U/3DS. Although in the past he has told me that he will not provide any information about that project until it was officially revealed for the sake of his job, as he was recently fired over a dispute with his co workers, he has now decided to share some of the information about the upcoming game with me, on the condition that, should I put the information on the internet, that I not state his name specifically.
As he worked very closely on the Project, and on several occasions actually spoke directtly to Mr. Sakurai, he has a good bit of information in regards to the upcoming Title:

"I'm gonna keep my friend anonymous, per his request, but here's a shit ton of information, enough for the company to figure out who the employee is."
Dumb as hell, but I guess the same thing basically happened with X and Y, so I'll humor it.

"Special Move Combo's"

Something that my friend and Mr. Sakurai spoke about directly is a new mechanic added in to increase the strategy of play. Using certain combo's can have a character use different, much more powerful attacks that are not normally available. All characters have these attacks, though the mechanics are altered from character to character. 2 specific examples were given of these attacks, and all of these are used using combo's with standard moves:

Little Mac - Little Mac has a potent air Special Move Combo, which is accessed by using the following attacks in this order while in the air, it should be noted that for all of these, every attack must land for the special combo to activate, " Standard Neutral, Standard Up, Air Dodge, Standard Down" If this combo is successful, then rather than Little Mac's typical Standard Down, he will use a powerful meteor move, which will send the victim flying down, as well as propelling Little Mac up, potentially saving his life.
Mii Fighter (Gunner) - Mii Fighter Gunner has a powerful attack using these combo's, and it can be used by executing the following combo, "(The first 2 of these are in the air) Standard Combo, Standard Combo, (Lands on the stage) Down Tilt, Up Combo" Should this be executed correctly, then Mii Fighter would launch his/her opponent up, then let lose a devastating laser from their Plasma arm (This laser is described as a "Smaller, Vertical, Red version of Samus's Zero Laser" Sakurai noted that this attack is capable of KOing a Small character at 50%, a Medium Character at 70% and the Heaviest Character at 100%

What? Not only is this weirdly specific, but it also seems to go against the easy to understand philosophy of the smash series.

It should be noted that when it was questioned who the "Heaviest" Character was, he responded that it was a Newcomer, and then refused to speak further on the subject.
Announced Stages:
Pyrosphere :
The Pyrosphere has multiple events that can take place during a battle there, although my friend only know Explicitly of 3:

Greemers appear on the stage periodically, and crawl slowly on the top from the Rightmost part of the stage to the Left. They are harmful to touch, but can be easily launched using weak attacks in a manner similar to that of the Soccer Ball in Smash Brothers Brawl.
The lights will sometimes go out, and the magma will rise, although it does not go onto the stage itself, the Magma can be used as an offensive tool by spiking an opponent into it, although so long as the Magma is up Meteor smashes are not possible.
There is a stage boss, my friend spoke to Mr. Sakurai about it at one occasion, and the only information he would reveal is that its "Not what you will expect"

So his friend is willing to get in trouble leaking a bunch of shit, but won't go all out on it. This happens in almost every bullshit leak. Why does he later say it's Marshtomp or Sceptile, then later say it's Sceptile? If he didn't know then, why does he know now?

This whole thing just reeks of fake.

There will be an active Community thread, but overall hype will be dampened by $10* Amiibos.

*that's a lowball guess.

XD I did the same thing actually, but didn't look into forums. Great job.

Also, for future use for anyone, here's the outtake for Smooth Landing aka Z/L Cancelling

It's really a shame that their best reason for being tossed is that they aren't as popular as Charizard and you can't have that many pokemon. Both were very creatively designed, it's sad to see them go. For me, Sceptile is the weak link in this roster, him being in and Jiggs being gone feels weird

Seriously, when I saw how they designed Ivysaur's solar beam mechanic in Project M, it opened my eyes to how cool they could be if they were their own entities. Sadly they don't have that mascot appeal that Charizard has so them being cut is possible.

I donno why, but I'd really like to see them make Ivysaur into Venasaur. Up the size of him, give him a new final smash.

I'm also hoping there's an alternate Mega Charizard Y final smash for Charizard, but who knows.
