Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Personally I don't think a "grass rep" in Smash is needed, nor is Sceptile a "likely newcomer". I think that's just trying to force a theme way too much, and if you really wanted to rep something that's missing from Smash history, a playable gen 5 Pokemon is it. Since Zoroark fell through earlier on, I'd be curious to see what Bisharp would be like.

But as for the grass/fire/water reps I'd choose,
it's be the armoured duo of Chesnaught and Samurott and...Typhlosion.

It amazes me how similar Chesnaught and Samurott are. The first mammal starters of their type, warriors (samurai and knights are pretty similar) and the final evolutions are a complete departure from the previous two, as well as having another animal mixed into them. I used to hate them at first but in time I grew to like both.

I can't make a slick CSS image as I'm relegated to my phone but here's my guess at a final roster:

Mario
Luigi
Peach
Bowser
Rosalina

Link
Zelda
Sheik
Ganondorf
Girahim

Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong
Dixie Kong (Diddy semi-clone)
King K Rool

Yoshi

Wario

Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Lucario
Charizard
Greninja
Mewtwo

Little Mac

ROB

Marth
Ike
Robin
Lucina

Pac-Man
Sonic
Mega Man
Snake

Captain Olimar

Samus
Zero Suit Samus
Ridley (I doubt Sakurai would tease like he has otherwise)

Villager

Mii Fighter

Wii Fit Trainer

Kirby
Metaknight
King Dedede

Shulk

Ness
Lucas

Captain Falcon

Fox
Falco
Wolf

Mr. Game & Watch

Sheriff (as the wtf/retro inclusion, in 8-bit form)

51 characters total + a random slot. Best guess I could come up with. I don't put much stock in the Gematsu leak.

I raise this challenge: choose one of each type of starter (Fire / Water / Grass) for Smash. Don't worry about popularity, just personal favorites and potential movesets.

Go.

Now THAT is an interesting question. Honestly, I think my favorite of each type would make for a good lineup.

BLASTOISE: Fairly well-rounded, albeit on the slow-side. Emphasis on knocking opponents away, then keeping them away with his specials, which would mostly be water blasts and defensive moves.
INFERNAPE: Fast and strong, heavy emphasis on combos. Maybe take some inspiration from Flare Blitz and Close Combat to make him self-destructive... like, you can trigger something like X-Factor (from MvC3), but you take damage for every attack.
CHESNAUGHT: Grappler for sure. I think special-wise, though, he'd have a lot of Falcon Punch type moves, with heavy windup but a lot of knockback. And, of course, a Spiky Shield counter.

I think Squirtle/Monferno/Chesnaught would be interesting, too. Monferno would probably be the same as Infernape (albeit more moderate), and Squirtle would obviously be the light one. That might have a better balance. Small-light-fast Squirtle, mid-range Monferno, slow-heavy Chesnaught.

...now I'm disappointed we'll never, ever get Infernape. Stupid chicken, taking all of the Fire/Fighting glory...

I really hope there is an alternative voice for Fox. What the hell were they thinking, he sounds awful compared to the previous games. Especially when shouting "Fire!" or "Landmaster!".

Yeah, Infernape is a beast. I could see me maining him in a Pokemon-centered
ha!
fighting game.

Typhlosion: My favourite third-stage Gen 2 starter and one of my favourite third-gens period. The flame that shoots out of his back could make for a cool element to his playstyle, although I'm not entirely sure how it'd work. I imagine flaring it up with be its' Up-Smash, however. Down B could be Blaze, which works up the flame that burns on his back. Basically create an aura of fire that damages people around him and powers him up the longer you hold it, signified by a brighter/taller/whatever flame spine. Side B could be Flame Wheel, he erupts in flame and dashes forward on all his legs. Super-armour, just because! Can't think of anything else, sadly.

Imagining him as the speedy, light imp (relatively) to Charizard's weight and power. Some Wolf bits with lots of scratching and biting. I kinda like the idea of him being hard to approach because of how hot he burns, although that's sort of just a whim on how I'm picturing him.

...actually don't have many ideas for anyone else. Gonna throw out Torterra and Blastoise as two Pokemon I'd like to see, as well.

It was my first midnight launch game too. Played with my brother at 1am in the morning. :P
It was my first midnight launch too, which was amazing now that I look back on it as I lived in a smidgeon of a pigeon town; totally hoping for a midnight launch for 3DS.

I wonder what other StarFox characters will be put in Smash 4. So far the only on SF character revealed so far is Fox. Falco is very likely to return, but I'm not so sure about Wolf. Maybe Krystal will make an appearance in this game. Hmmm....

Fox, Falco, and Wolf seem like the perfect trio of Star Fox reps to me.
Hopefully Falco's reflector kick gets sent back to custom moves where it belongs, though. Its fun while screwing around, but just useless in more serious matches.

Krystal is certainly the most prominent character they could add after those three. Instead of adding new characters, I would hope Sakurai focuses on diversifying the SF trios moveset.

Wolf is already pretty much completely different. He just needs a new final smash and maaaaaybe neutral special.

Falco could use some refining, but then how would Falco fans react to that?

I was just teasing. :-) I understand Wario isn't everyone's cup of tea. That's great you share the good attitude of hoping everyone comes back, though. That's my stance -- every character is near and dear to someone, somewhere, so I always hope that as many characters come back as possible. :-)

I wish more people felt the way we did! I'll never understand the mentality of actively hoping a character gets cut even when you know there are fans of that character out there - it's really mean-spirited. A new Smash game is an incredibly rare occasion, and it sucks for fans of left-out characters to know their next potential chance won't come for several years. I remember that feeling all too well from when Sal Romano's Brawl roster leaked, was confirmed to be legit, and Mega Man wasn't on it. It sucked, and as Smash fans, I know the majority of us have been there. So the more people that are happy with each new roster, the better in my opinion. I'd say this factor is easily more important than overall balancing of the game (which Sakurai seems to agree with).

I know it's easy for me to say that now since I'm on the "very satisfied" side of the roster wish list this time, having my ultimate dream character (Mega Man) confirmed right from the very beginning, but even if Mega Man hadn't gotten in, I'd still feel the same way. And I think Sakurai shares that mentality too, which is why I'm hopeful there won't be any cuts from Brawl's roster!

Was watching youtube videos about smash and the recent lucina and robin inclusions and this comment reminded me of the trophies in the smash direct.
NextChannelGames platinumknight4 days ago

You guys did not bring this up but this is something to think about.

Remember back on the Smash Direct in April, during the show, 4 trophies were shown, which were Kiki, Fi, King Kihunter and Pseudo Palutena.

Each of these trophies have some kind of a relationship with certain characters from their games, I will give example.

(This Trophy was hinting Lucina & Robin)
Kiki in FE:AW. She was really great friends with Marth, when you find her, she thinks Lucina is Marth and becomes friends with her.

(This Trophy was hinting Palutena)
Pseudo-Palutena in KI:U Palutena makes a joke on Pit during his mission.

(This trophy is hinting at either Redley or Adam?)
King Kihunter in Metroid Other M. After you beat this boss you get to see the clone Redley but as a Bunny... (Bunny Redley for Smash?)

(This trophy is hinting at either Ghirahim, Fi or a new Zelda rep)
Fi in Zelda: Skyward Sword. Fi is the master sword, and she travels with you to help you compete the Master Sword and beat Ghirahim.

Calling in an air raid.

I wonder which characters they would use, the old team of Leon/Andrew/Pigma or the new team of Leon/Panther.

That does seem like the best bet for a final smash though, it really needs to change because not only is it boring have three characters with the same thing, but Landmaster doesn't even make sense for Wolf.

Wolf has reflector, dash, and pistol. Yeah yeah I know, his dash goes UP A BIT. There are a lot of ways to change him. Also change his voice.

Falco fans can suck it up. All characters get changed in fighting game franchises, it's natural. Ken and Ryu were pretty much palette swaps at one point, but now they are very different in their playstyle even though they have some similarities. Of course, everyone has a favorite character and get upset at any little change, but that's the way things are. I bet there are still Ganondorf fans who want him to be exactly the same as in Brawl.

chestnaught~the beast
dewott~the samurai we deserve
blaziken~goat

I'm on my phone so I can't elaborate. damn crappy touch screen keyboard >.>

But Wolf's voice is perfect, why would you want it changed.

I can tell someone's gonna be disappointed. I'd temper your expectations, add a Rhythm Heaven character in place of the Sheriff for starters. Cut down on the DK characters, & you also forgot Toon Link. I could go on.

That list isn't a prediction, it's a wish list.

Whoops! You're right. Toon Link brings the total roster to 52. I don't find that number terribly unlikely. Why are you so sure of a rhythm heaven character? The Gematsu leak was wrong about Chrom, Robin and Lucina.

And I kept K Rool as well as Dixie because it's hard for me to imagine FE having more reps than DK, but I won't be upset if it happens.

Sneaky spirit (a Rhythm Heaven enemy) was spotted by multiple people in Smash Run mode on the 3DS at E3.

The gematsu leak got some thing wrongs, but it has gotten many things right (some specific things too such as "Mii Fighters") to completely toss it aside, Sal's leaker(s) probably have outdated and/or inaccurate info.

On top of this, every single franchise with a Smash Run enemy, except SSE, has a playable character. Also, Rool has been irrelevant for years.

The smash run enemy is a fair point. I just have trouble believing that this game's Game and Watch or ROB equivalent will be leaked months in advance. And if it is a Rhythm Heaven character, I wonder why Sakurai would give such a clear hint months in advance with the smash run enemy. Any other hints for characters thus far have been either nonexistent or much more deliberate as far as I'm aware.

Except Falco plays quite differently from Fox in every game they have been in...so maybe you will have to suck it up when its revealed they didnt change his moveset from Brawl at all. Including their shitty attempt to change up his reflector.

Hints from Shulk's English VA, but you already have Shulk.

After you add the RH rep, you need to downsize. Trim the fat for starters (Rool, Snake, Sheriff, & Ghirahim for example).

On top of this, every single franchise with a Smash Run enemy, except SSE, has a playable character. Also, Rool has been irrelevant for years.

In terms of relevance, it's hard to argue that Pit, Ice Climbers, Game & Watch, Lucas, or ROB were at the height of their popularity upon being included. I admit that K Rool is the least likely of these inclusions, but I think there's a chance and, again, I find it hard to justify FE having more characters than DK. Especially since Sakurai has shown he'll add clones when it makes sense, as it would for Dixie Kong.

Edit- I find the "trimmed fat" version less likely after our last newcomer reveal. Prior to the 2nd Gematsu leak and Ike's return, the general consensus was that Marth would stay and Chrom would replace Ike to maintain 2 FE characters. Those expecting three characters were considered optimistic. Fast forward to now and we have four FE reps. I don't think that this kind of reversal of fortune is somehow impossible for DK or Zelda.

Well Sakurai likes to troll :V Plus even with the Sneaky Spirit in, there's still no indication that it would be the Chorus Kids, could be anyone from that franchise. Its the leak that's pushing at them being more likely.

Lucas was actually quite close from Brawl's release date when his game came out, the others are (in the case of Pit, were) the only reps of their franchise at the time, so even if they were irrelevant they were still bringing a lot of content with them by bringing not just a playable rep, but stage, music, etc.
