Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Yeah, I will but I'm talking about fanbases. I'm concerned about 3DS mostly because some people said that they would move to Wii U for good once it got released. At least I know Super Sah is going to help me to keep it alive. Hopefully few people would too :P
It'll be active. I'm sure plenty of people will continue to refuse to buy a Wii U because it's not a "real" next-gen console.

3DS will likely become my commute game so I don't see myself abandoning it as soon as the Wii U version comes out.

Honestly, I'd rather have a combined OT with the North American/European Launch of the 3DS version. There's almost certainly going to be A LOT of crossover between the two versions and I honestly don't think there will be enough differences to justify completely seperate OTs for the both of them. Also we make an import impressions thread whenever a game launches in Japan first since most probably won't import the game due to region locking and/or not being able to read Japanese, so it seems like it'd be a little weird if Smash gets special treatment on that front. Still, it's your call, Heath.

Before I answered, combined ots, do you meant 3DS and Wii U right?

I'll still play the 3ds version at work on breaks/lunch and when I'm a passenger in a car/plane. Though outside the occasional smash run we'll all migrate to the 3ds as a few of my smash friends don't have a 3ds

Has it been mentioned what the gold coins are used for in the 3DS version? It appears that you win gold coins in various modes, and you can also spectate matches and bet on players to win even more coins.

However, I haven't seen any details regarding the actual functional purpose for the coins...

You'll probably spend them to earn trophies, just like in Melee and Brawl.

Maybe they work similar to how they do in previous smashes and you use them for some minigame to get more trophies.

Not yet, but I'd expect they'd have some functionality for the game's trophy launcher / slot machine equivalent. Especially if custom moves and alternate costumes can be unlocked along with the trophies.

Yeah, it was my original plan, but some people preferred to have it separate. I do understand their points about it so I decided to take it to moderator to make it easier for me to decide. I can be very indecisive, so moderator recommended me to keep it separate due to many reasons and I agreed with moderator and his reasons.

It's easier and better to keep it deprecate but I will have somewhat different op for both version. Y'all will see if it got panned out!

OK. Thanks. So what about the launch date? You still gonna post the OP with the Japanese launch, or do an Import thread for the Japanese launch?

I think once both versions are out we should most definitely have one thread. I think the cons of having two separate threads outweigh the pros.
Can I propose a matchmaking thread and a general talk thread so it doesn't end up like Mario Kart 8's OT where you really can't talk about the game since 95% of it is post match commentary.

Well, there are some Japanese gamers here that have done a lot of us so I would like to pay them back by having fabulous OT ready for them on Japanese Release date. I will talk to my partner and see if we could have it ready by then.

We should wait for few months after both games got released before we decide anything about it.

That would defeat the purpose of having OTs for the games.

Well, I will certainly need people to play with to unlock stuff on the 3DS version, 2 months won't be enough to get everything so I'll post in both OT too.

Yep. To those saying there should simply be one combined OT, I strongly disagree with that. The games are coming out at different times, and the function of an OT when a game is released is primarily to discuss things specific to that game. 3DS discussion will be completely smothered in a unified thread around the time of the Wii U version's release.

After a few months, I believe both the 3DS and Wii U OTs might become more like general Smash community discussion threads (like this one), which is why I think having a unified thread for the long term might be helpful. But certainly not in the beginning.

I don't see why it would prevent the purpose of having OTs for the games. You still have a place to talk about the game in general and another place to organise matches, they both provide an OT purpose. Other games have had multiple threads i.e. turnip trading for New Leaf and Brawl had one just for snapshots.

Still fairly irked they didn't bother with a global launch. If Pokemon can manage it they have zero excuse. At least it won't be as bad as Animal Crossing.

It annoys me as well. I do think we have a good chance of a worldwide release though for the Wii U version simply because I can't see Nintendo letting this game release after Black Friday. Since it is a "Holiday" 2014 release date I imagine that October is out of the question as well, so at worst it might release in Japan earlier by a week I'd imagine as opposed to the near month wait we have for Smash 3DS.

Also, I admit that once I get the Wii U version and also 100% Smash 3DS, I'm probably going to move on permanently to Smash Wii U. I'll still play 3DS version on occasion though such as traveling or playing online with friends that only have a 3DS.

So Amazon have a guide listed for the 3DS version. In the description it doesn't say anything like "tips to unlock all characters!" or anything like that. Don't guide descriptions usually say something like that? I know it's a stretch but it could point to the whole no unlockable characters thing being true.

I don't mind the different releases; I had a JP 3DS and gave it up. Less than a month is nothing. If this happens to the Wii au though...

I don't think the guidemakers know any more than we do at this point and probably won't know for sure until they have their copies of the game.

I have a feeling I will be playing the 3DS version for a long while even after the Wii U version comes out. If the online is good I will never drop it entirely. If its as bad as Brawl(impossible) I will just save it for conventions and tournaments while I'm waiting around for my turn on the Wii U. Also the stages just look too fun to drop entirely.

I'm not sure about that. I meant look at most of OTs with matchmaking features, such as Halo, UMVC3, USF4, KOF, BB, Sports, etc. They don't really have to make other thread just for matchmaking and talks. They only have spin-off threads when they are hosting tournaments for prizes or so.

I fully understand your concern that our thread might be spammed with battle talks and matchmaking, but we already working on something to minimize it. If it happened then we could do something about it.

But treehouse rep said that there will be unlockable characters. Did they?

I don't think that means anything unless every previous guide had that on the cover.

Please, can we have two separate OT's.

Otherwise it's just going to be one bitch-fest OT where people take every opportunity to shit on the 3DS game. I rather an OT with just 3DS players
myself
in it.

I say one thread. Character movesets and techniques are the same across both versions, which is most of what the thread will be talking about. You don't have separate OT's for fighting games that come out on multiple systems, do you?

That being said, I could see the second OT going up when the Wii U version launches, or at least updating the OP.

Weird, just realized there wasn't a Diddy Kong trophy in Melee...which seems odd since we got Dixie which mentions him. Makes me wonder if perhaps he was intended for Melee at some point, thus a normal trophy was never made?

We are going to have two separate OTS; one for 3DS and one for Wii U. Please stop asking for otherwise. The merger option is still possible if the threads' posts have been waning.

Just want to say, I think Health should add release dates information, official site and Miiverse community links in OT11's OP.

I guess that wouldn't change even with my tag. :P Anyway, I will do that for OT11.

Did you see my explanations about two different OTS? which should be somewhere last page or so.
