I wonder what the final stage count for each version will be.

Brawl had 31 new stages (22 starter, 9 unlockable) and 10 retro stages (6 starter, 4 unlockable).

SSB for 3DS has 17 new stages and 1 retro stage so far.

SSB for Wii U also has 17 new stages and 1 retro stage so far.

The Rhythm Monkey would best represent the series' quirky nature and would manage to still be a unique, recognizable character when adapted to the Smash Bros. art style. Marshall would be all right, but he wouldn't end up as visibly iconic - he's ultimately just a white silhouette with a funny face and a tie, after all.
 
My favorite stages from series that have had multiples:

Mario: Mushroom Kingdom II
Zelda: Temple
F-Zero: Port Town
Kirby: Fountain of Dreams
Pokemon: Saffron City
Earthbound: Fourside
Metroid: Brinstar Depths
Donkey Kong: Jungle Japes
Star Fox: Venom
Yoshi: Yoshi's Island (SSBM)

On a similar note, the 3DS version is getting a Tomodachi Life stage, isn't it? Or did I just imagine that?

I mean, if it were purely up to me I would totally use the Barista as the Rhythm Heaven character. Because the Barista is awesome.

No. I would wager that if we're getting a new build we'll have some new stages revealed this week that will be in it, much like what happened at E3. Although I personally doubt it'll be a new build at all.

He appears in the Wii version.
 
Honestly, my ideal Rhythm Heaven character is someone whose design clearly reflects the fact that they're from a music game franchise, as I'd like to think their moveset will be rhythmic in some sense. Someone like Karate Joe or the Ringside Wrestler make for natural fighters, but the expectation for them, based on their design, would be that they fight in a pretty traditional style. If you ask me, even the Rhythm Monkey would kinda give the impression that they should fight like, well, a monkey, and have a moveset like Diddy Kong. I don't really know if there are any particularly prominent characters who are clearly associated with music in some sense, and because of that, I feel that a relatively blank slate character like Marshal works well enough.

At least that's just how I feel about it.
 
I think i've decided that playing a couple of 'for fun' matches right before bed will be my thing on the 3DS every night. Dont have to try or care about anything. Good 'brain shut off' gameplay mode. As long as matchmaking is quick, that is. If i have to wait 10 minutes for a match, no thanks.

When my girlfriend's son was 6 years old he could have named every single one of those characters (except for the new fire emblem characters, of course). I think gaf-known 6 year olds might be cheating.

That has to be one of my most wanted Earthbound stages. Really hope it shows up!

What else would make good Earthbound/Mother stages? Cave of the Past could make a neat/creepy stage. Maybe Moonside to compliment Fourside?

Unknown but also extremely unlikely. Almost definitely not in the 'with anyone' online modes. Possibly taunt-messages like in brawl for playing w/ friends. Details about playing w/ friends have not been disclosed yet.

Aside from Saturn Valley I would love to see Dalaam or the Club from Mother 3
 
I just realized that there's no "Want to know more about Captain Falcon? Visit the official website for F-Zero!" at the bottom of Captain Falcon's character page. Even Ike's linked through to the Awakening page.

It's so depressing

Why do you think it's unlikely for Friends Mode? It was in Mario Kart 8. :P
