Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

I see it as a PR nightmare waiting to happen. Some little kid cries to mom that some guy named hitler beat him up online. Mom doesn't understand, flips out, contacts the local news, etc.

Granted, a kid playing call of duty is subject to something much worse happening, but nintendo likes to maintain its family friendly image (and this isn't an M rated game) so the bad publicity could be much worse.
Considering the Wii U itself and other software is based around Miis I find it odd that Smash is the one to funny funny about people's Mii creations.

That would NEVER fit on the 3ds screen
Buy another 3DS to display the rest of the roster.

Yes! Well, preferably the wrestler she interviews, with her as an assist character integral to his moveset? Somehow?

Also, to the favorite stage from repped series post:

Mario: Delfino Plaza
Zelda: Temple
Pokémon: Poké Floats (Although Saffron City's really close and isn't despised by all my friends)
DK: Kongo Jungle (Melee, the one with the river)
Metroid: Norfair
Star Fox: Sector Z/Corneria
Yoshi: Yoshi's Story (N64)
F-Zero: Mute City (With shout-outs to Port Town: Aero Drive's playlist)
Mother: Onett
Ice Climber: The Summit (Unfortunately, this is a lesser-of-two-evils win)
Game & Watch: Flat Zone 1

And since I didn't get to try either FE stage at Smash Fest, every other series only has one level or no level that I can vouch for.

I don't see Ridley in that roster, doesn't seem like a big problem.
I didn't even realize the default name was Robin until people started suggesting him/her for Smash. When I started Awakening, I erased the default name and promptly forgot all about it.
I can't bring myself to do this. I can with Zelda games, since I'm already so familiar with the character. But when I'm just getting used to new characters, it always feels wrong to me not to keep their name. The fact that I hate naming things is probably a big contributing factor though. <.<

If Sakurai said that Miis would be difficult online because of the customisation and outfits or something along those lines, I'd at least respect that. Bullying just sounds like a made up excuse,

I assume they want to avoid situations like Hitler beating up a Mohammed Mii.

I dunno, i'm just trying to think of a reason why. I think the term 'bullying' was oversimplifying it and there must be some reason why they're disabled.

The general consensus seems to be 'because hitler'

That's funny, I'm the other way around. With Zelda, I can't use any name besides Link, because I feel it's etched in stone that Link is the hero's proper name. With a game like Awakening, on the other hand, where the character is brand new and has no long-established name, the default name is to me nothing more than a placeholder.

I'd love her to be the RT rep.

I would be so cool with her or Rhythm Girl. The Rhythm series has some really awesome designed female characters.

I'm adding you all to my list of 'awesome people' :P

I'd rather not. You don't even play as her.

As Zubz says I would imagine her being a full on 'stand' character with her moves commanding the wrestler to do stuff (mostly things like posing that also happen to double as attacks :3 )

It's odd, I've known about rhythm girl (the one in the red dress you see around the series) and the wrestling pair but until the gematsu leak i'd literally never heard of the choir boys/glee club :o

But Miis are fighters in the game, we can beat them up as much as we like. It's only online with random people we can't. We can even beat up our friend's Mii. If it was about the treatment of Miis then they wouldn't be in the game in the first place.

Also in regards to Hitler Miis, restricting it to ones NNID Mii while playing with anyone would be a way round it since they can easily mod those Miis.

I just realized that there's no "Want to know more about Captain Falcon? Visit the official website for F-Zero!" at the bottom of Captain Falcon's character page. Even Ike's linked through to the Awakening page.

It's so depressing
Maybe there's a Virtual Console page they could've linked? Eh, I dunno.

That defeats the point of the mii, in a way, since in the E3 digital even sakurai says that miis allow you to put your own requested character (as well as yourself) in the game.

I raced against hitler and snoop dogg in mario kart 8

But hitler wasn't hitting you with a sword and throwing you off a cliff.

I dunno man! I think 'bullying' is a lame excuse, but they must have done it for some reason and bullying is just an oversimplification.

Yeah, but with local play everyone presumably consents to beat up those Miis, so no one will be "uncomfortable," as Iwata said. With random online play, though, that's not possible. Nintendo doesn't want people getting upset because someone took, say, a religious figure into battle, which many people would find offensive.

I agree it's a little silly, but I think it's just one of those zero-tolerance policies. Kind of like how you can't take anything sharp or pointy on a plane, even though no one is going to hijack a 747 with some nail clippers. Nintendo doesn't want to have to sort through each individual case and judge, "well, THIS one is okay, but THAT one is over the line..." It's simpler for them just to ban Miis altogether.

Not if that only applied to using Miis online. Since those are easily moderated, having your NNID's Mii (with a standard moveset for one of the three forms) usable in online battles would at least let you use them with strangers.

In other modes where customization is allowed, anything goes.

This is honestly one of the worst Japanese -> English dubbings in the series.

At least Beat the Beat improved the quality of the English dub, but it offered the Japanese dub as well so best of both worlds.

Well at the moment we're getting no Miis so I'd rather have a restriction in place so they are at least an option online.
Will have to rely on GAF for my Mii online needs.

It's the simplest solution to what may or may not be a complicated issue.

Rather than spend time/money on figuring out of hitler mii could be bad publicity, or if there is some software-side solution to preventing it, you just prevent it in the first place in the easiest and cheapest way possible, cut them out entirely.

Also, imagine that Miis are top tier, best in the game, broken tier. Imagine the best smash bros player uses Hitler mii, and starts streaming his 'for glory' matches. Now there's a super popular streamer using hitler to win. Next thing you know it's on kotaku and polygon that hitler is dominating at smash bros. (this could still be done w/ friends, but still, that's a different matter altogether. Dota/lol matches w/ friends aren't popular streaming material)

It's just a publicity nightmare easily avoided.

I can answer that: no. We don’t have the time to fully recreate every single character who’s been in Smash Bros at this point. Adding new characters is not a simple addition – it’s really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go. We can’t because of the amount of work it takes. However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character. So we’re not going to cut characters out of the way, we’re going to put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it’s good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I’d like to apologise in advance to those fans.

I hadn't read this before. I feel like ROB is definitely out, which makes me sad. But maybe Wario will be out instead?

The idea is cool and all but I don't really want that for a Rhythm Heaven character, and even then I'd rather the wrestler to, well...wrestle.

I'd want a character to have something to do with rhythm. Chorus Kids are associated with music, whereas the Wrestler doesn't. Granted, martial arts incorporate rhythm but we're talking about a very different kind here.

I liked Frog Hop, Karate Man and That's Paradise in English, personally. :P

What they should have done is just made a stock Mii Fighter - with completely ordinary, nondescript features - for matches with anyone. That eliminates the "bullying" issue while still allowing people to use Miis online.

That would have solved it, but that solution may be in contradiction with sakura's 'mii fighter' philosophy, so maybe to sakurai it was better cut than to violate his philosophy. We'll see.

Hey, I even said earlier that I liked Frog Step, I'd even say I prefer it in English. Those other two are OK, it's just that Fan Club and The Dazzles were so terrible I don't want to risk anything like that again.

I can't really comment on the Wii version since I just stuck to the Japanese.

It was worse he was throwing red shells at me lol

You honestly think Wario has any possibility of being out?

At this point I attribute Wario's mysterious absense to the face that he'll be in one of the newcomer trailers.

That's why we need a GAF community.
It's not Vs. random so Miis should be allowed.

Really hope smash has a good community system. I'd like to be able to forego 'for fun/glory' and hit a 'play w/ online community members' button.

I hadn't read this before. I feel like ROB is definitely out, which makes me sad. But maybe Wario will be out instead?

There is literally no reason to suspect that either of these guys are gone. I swear people read any vague little "something might not be here that was in previous game" and go into full sadness mode right off the bat...

Haha, I agree, Mario Kart scars me more than Smash does.

I had a pretty awesome rivalry with a crossdressing Satan Mii in Mario Kart 8 a few weeks ago. The things you see online sometimes...

I have no idea why either of these characters would be cut.

Well, for some reason I assumed that the cuts would come from the Brawl roster. And there aren't many characters left that could be cut, I feel like.

Game & Watch doesn't have a char page, but shouldn't this thread assume he is actually in the game? I feel like the pac man trailer basically confirms it.
