Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Same could be said of other characters in Smash. I mean we're on the fourth and fifth games in the series and people still say idiotic things like this?

For the most part, he's far more irrelevant than any newcomers to Smash 4. Even the potential Chorus Men.

Returning characters' relevance doesn't mean much in Smash Bros--Jiggly and Sheik for example. And King K. Rool, in my opinion, certainly doesn't qualify as a classic character such as Ice Climbers, Game & Watch, or R.O.B.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be in because he's isn't important. That would be idiotic. I'm just against people who think he's important enough to get some kind of honorary spot on the roster. That's all.

I really don't care if any more new characters announced are villains, etc. I will be glad to play as them.

That said, my main is probably Lucina right now.

Guys, Sheik is a character. Jigglypuff is a character. Fucking Ice Climbers are a character.

I think relevance left the building a long time ago.

Guys

We got Lucina

That's all that matters

When Sheik and Jigglypuff were put into the series, they were very relevant. Once you're in the series it's hard to get dropped apparently (but RIP in peace Pichu, Mewtwo, Roy, Dr. Mario).

I'd say Ice Climbers fall under a category of influential/classic characters, along with Game & Watch, R.O.B., Ness, and Pit (before Kid Icarus 3DS).

I'm seriously amazed by how much better the Smash version looks. The only part that still looks bad is the dinky arm cannon (Though I would also prefer ridged shoulders... Seriously miss the ridged shoulders).

In addition, the alternate palettes look even better on it, especially the Light Suit. That colour scheme can even make the Other M suit look decent within the actual game:

That Ridley's still irredeemable, though.

Smashboards is saying this is the E3 demo.

This Smash Brothers 3DS tournament will be using the build from E3, so there be no new characters or stages in action. However, for those who haven't gotten to spend time with the game, the tournament will be streamed on Nintendo's Twitch channel, so there will be plenty to watch and learn! Keep in mind that any character that appears overbearing or too strong is subject to change; according to Nintendo's press release,

I'm sorry you have ugly Miis.

I said nothing about King K. Rool, so don't lump me with them.
It was a fateful day when I used the 3DS camera to capture my face for Mii purposes, and then when the box was removed from the Mii's head I staggered back in shock dropping the 3DS to the floor, from that day forth I vowed revenge on the avatar that mocked me so.

My reasons for thinking he won't be included have nothing to do with him as a character, his design, or me thinking Nintendo or Miyamoto hates him. I just don't think he's relevant and I don't think Nintendo has any plans to use him in the series potentially ever again.

And you say the last time he was seen was in 2008, and that's because there's only been two DK games since then, but he was seen in 2008 in a Mario spinoff game (and before that, a few other spinoff games). There have been plenty of Mario spinoff games he could have appeared in since then, the Country Returns series isn't the only place he could have shown up.

And if we're just going to count primary Donkey Kong platformer titles, then he technically hasn't been seen in one of those since DKC3, in 1996. 18 years ago.

I'm kind of taking in 100 odd posts of discussion in one gulp here so apologies for lumping a bunch of varied points together.
Regarding this one in particular, DK characters just don't often turn up in Mario spinoffs, we're talking about a subset of games where even Diddy Kong didn't join in until MK Double Dash so that Donkey had a karting buddy, really I don't think anyone expects expanded DK series characters in Mario spinoffs aside from Donkey Kong himself, they tend to be inserted in the rare chance that they fit like Dixie in Basketball/Hoops 3 on 3 for a three Kong team or Kremlings as generic goalkeepers/DKC tennis court linesmen. Basically I wouldn't use Mario spinoffs as much of a measurement, even Diddy was dropped from the most recent Mario Kart for more babies and pink gold Peach.
Yeah K.Rool could've shown up but that's always been a long shot, the sluggers roster is more of an outlier of them throwing in everything even slightly relevant to the extended Mario verse at the time (well except Wario of course which is always shunned for some reason).

I'd consider DK64 a primary DK platformer as underwhelming as it may be, not like that's adding much with four more years. At this stage it's a fair point to think that the series could as a whole be moving in a direction without him with the Wii and DS generation being the Kremlings last hurrah via Paons okay to dire outings, it's just still a bit early to say for sure seeing that the species still crops up at odd intervals, even here in the 3DS version of SSB. But anyway I'm sure we've had enough K.Rool musings for now, I don't expect to see him playable, really I'm not expecting a third DK character at all at this point but hey I like to hope.

This does make me think how it's funny that Smash itself can keep characters relevant and create fandom for others in its own weird way, being playable in a SSB is like being immortalised in the Nintendo museum.

The game has already added a tonne of female side characters.

Wanting a female for the sake of having another female character is exactly as bad as wanting a villain for the sake of having another villain.

False. Gender has no impact whatsoever on character playstyle, whereas most Nintendo villains inherently have large collections of interesting attacks to use by virtue of having multiple boss fights in which they do nothing but use them.

not even 2 weeks and thread has almost reached it's limit

sakman should just info dump everything on smash. i want to see what happens

As a quick response to this particular quote, I'd say that very approach is actually supportive of my opinion that they have more or less abandoned Kremlings as anything more than a relic of the DK series past, and bring up that Nintendo themselves have had ample opportunity to continue featuring Kremlings in Mario spinoff titles that have released since Sluggers in 2008, including the Mario & Sonic Olympic games series, the Mario vs Donkey Kong series, Mario Sports Mix, Mario Kart 7 & 8, Fortune Street, Mario Party 9, 10 and Island Tour, Mario Tennis Open, and Mario Golf: World Tour--and yet, not a single Kremling, despite their pre-2008 comeup appearances in Sluggers, Strikers Charged, Strikers, and Power Tennis.

Look at the general situation of the Donkey Kong series in those spin offs before highlighting the Kremlings. DK himself has been reduced to an NPC in the Mario Party games since Mario Party 5. Mario Kart 7 and 8 removed all other playable Donkey Kong related characters from the previous games (Diddy and Funky Kong), leaving only DK himself too. There seems to be a general trend of minimizing DK's involvement in the Mario spin offs to Donkey Kong himself. Mario Kart 8 didn't even bother adding a new DK themed track.

You realised on the auto Mii option? Oh dear.

I don't know, what I do know is I need it in smash like right now.
Along with an influx of orange alts of course, good thing Samus has that covered by default.

Good news, it's in already:

Pic of the day. The character farther in the back isn't from the Imperial forces, and the character in the front is not the infamous drum-playing puppet in Osaka. No, Mario is actually wearing an outfit from Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course! NES Open Tournament Golf might be a more familiar title.

This was the update for July 10th.

Everyone needs an Orange alt.

Why did they change Fox's to red in Brawl? D:
That blasted red team costume criteria muscling in on our orange I bet.

It's close but the Other M pic reminds me more of a black and lime green combo, not quite light suit Samus will make a solid runner up though.
