Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Man, now I remember just how unbelievably shitty the pre-Brawl period was aside from hype (for me, anyway). I'd get excited over the latest update, then I'd hop over to Gamefaqs and everyone would be tearing into it.

Now it's just angry kids on Miiverse and that's just hilarious.

A lot of it is self-referential humor nowadays, although I'm sure there was toxicity after the Rare buyout, when everyone started retroactively shitting on Rare, crap sites like Game Spy making "Top Most Overrated Games" list for the sole purpose of bashing their games, review sites ripping into the GBA ports as horrible, stuff like that.
Their response by shitting on everything Nintendo did and creating conspiracy theories about Miyamoto wanting to kill Donkey Kong didn't make things better. I can understand the bitterness at the time but they did fuck-all to properly cope with it and it's pretty obvious why a lot of people who originally saw the place as a dopey, self-aware DONKEY KONG LORE site just threw up their arms and left when it became increasingly more serious and toxic.

Hell, they were ironically the only site that thought it was a given Diddy Kong wouldn't be in Brawl.

I still adore the DKC's but I feel way better off just talking to my friends from DKVine over AIM or whatever than going back to the forums and always feeling like there's this dumb US VERSUS THE REST OF THE GAMING WORLD undercurrent going on.

That was always the saddest to see. I also remember when sprsk actively started banning people talking about Megaman in the old Dojo thread thinking "damn what a sad sight".

I won't lie, Lucas' update bummed me out because the wording of it made it sound like Ness was cut. "Up until now" and all that. I'm glad both PK kids ended up making it to Brawl, and I hope both make it to Smash 4!

Personality makes characters memorable.

Well, that and design. If you want, we can judge K.Rool solely on design.
he has golden crocodile moobs and a blunderbuss don't you go all insinuating he's a googley eyed piece of crap when K. Rool oozes design

I'm 90% sure he has a blunderbuss and uses it to move around in DKC2 because he looked like a poorly articulated action figure whenever he moved in DKC and it was really awkward, even for 90's CGI.

I'm browsing through the latter part of the last thread and I missed this screen before. I just love the variance between these three so much.

Look so good.

I was just taking a slight jab at the fact that the last 3 Rare games have been Kinect related since 2010, I hold no ill-will towards the games (Never played them, so I really can't). It just disappoints me how a company that made platformers/collectathons on par (If not better) than 1st party Nintendo games has become what they've become

I know, I just think it's funny that some of their most famous (and in some cases, beloved) games based their gameplay on Miyamoto titles, and so do their more recent games.

I won't lie about that either--my friends and I even pasted a memorial quote into our AIM profiles/forum signatures, but lo and behold! We wrong, and it was glorious.

Hey at least it wasn't as bad as characters with no actual movement animations shifting across the screen in the end credits character parade for DKC1 and 2.

I'm reading further back into that DK Vine thread to see the Diddy Kong reaction and they're complaining about him having brown eyes.

I didn't know this was a thing.

I ain't giving in for any character I support. I will still support guys like Geno, Claus, Ridley, Krystal and K. Rool. My support stays. I will support them even if I know they're not in. If the 35 character roster is true than I have lost all respect for Sakurai.

[a few posts from other people]

Oh, I'm a non-fan, eh? How can I be a "non-fan", dip****? I know they're not in Brawl but can I still support? Of course. I'm in denial. =P The thing is, the only reason why I was gonna get Brawl in the first place was because I wanted to play as Geno or Ridley or Krystal but, oh well, I'm convinced throughout it too. Stage Builder ftw. And I did respect the vast amount of time and there was plenty of f*cking time too add in more characters than just 35 too. I mean, I can name 3 things that Brawl could do good without so they could use that time to put maybe 45 + characters.

Geno for Brawl!
Geno for SSB4!

[a few more]

Because I, and many others, are disapointed. Some people were only gonna get Brawl because they thought that their playable character would get in. PCs were the thing people were looking forward too. Geno, Ridley, Megaman, Krystal, K. Rool, Isaac, Claus, Sukapon, Takamaru. Playable Characters make Brawl what it truly is and there are not enough that people expected. It seems that Sakurai didn't listen or even care about the fans that wanted the playable characters they wanted. I'm not the only one pissed.

This guy's delusional.

I like to think Cranky has a rocket-powered rocking chair that was simply too extreme for the SNES to properly render.

Didn't DKC3 do it's character parade with photographs? That made way more sense and it's nice the Retro games do the same thing.

What's with all this K. Rool hate? I love the guy. He always had a lot of personality to me, along with most of the Kremlings in general. His boss fights in DKC1, 2, and 64 are some of my most memorable ones around.

And his design is nothing to gawk over, but I dig it. Crazy looking crocodile king/pirate with a gold belly? Sure sign me up. Meanwhile I barley even remember what the final boss from DKCR looked like...

Where did all the Geno fans go anyway? It is like they all collectively disappeared after Brawl was released.

Time. Most of the people who are riding the Smash 4 hype train right now weren't old enough to play Super Mario RPG back when it first released, and a few probably weren't even alive.

It did, animations into photo snapshots, more stationary characters could then just stay put in their respective scenes so no more awkward sliding scenes.

On that note I think Retro could've presented things a bit more interestingly in credits and menus, I'm spoilt by their work on the Prime trilogy.
