Grenades were created in the early 1900's what is a character from medeival times using it. It makes absolute no sense meanwhile the harp is a major part of Sheik's character. Music is a huge part of the Zelda series that has yet to be represented in Smash and musical instruments in Zelda have magical powers. I think it is a lot more appropriate for the character to have a harp that is apart of her moveset.
...so, like, black powder bombs actually predated the early 1900s and while the modern idea of a 'hand grenade' spun out of WW1-era technology, people were using gunpowder to blow shit up way beforehand, especially in east Asia. Black powder bombs and other shrapnel-type weapons like black eggs see a huge association with ninjas, as well. It's a common weapon in tons of ninja media (either as actual explosives or smoke bombs). Sheik is a ninja and most of her attacks and abilities (like her needles, which also aren't 'actually' part of her canon character or her smoke bomb) reflect that. Grenades are perfectly consistent within that motif.

I just can't see how you can claim that grenades absolutely make no sense for Sheik when you're suggesting that they literally make up a new feature to an otherwise ordinary item purely to justify it being there. I can't help but raise my eyebrows when someone is saying 'x would be perfect if x were y'. Especially when it's a little contrary to her running motif in the context of her current playstyle and Smash.

The harp would be a fantastic taunt, though.

You can blame Nintendo of America for localizing the new move as "Burst Grenade," but it's really just a fictional weapon based on primitive technology. Explosives have been around for a thousand years. It's no more nonsensical than Link's bombs, and he comes from the same series/time period as Sheik.

Yeah I kinda actually would really want Cranky Kong. It would be a nice and incredibly unique character. Itd also be a funny whacky character akin to Jigglypuff and Mr. G&W. He also works in a way since he is the original DK.

A harp translates much easier to the "slash slash charge" type of gameplay from musou games than it would in a game like Smash, in my opinion. Secondly lots of LoZ games have cannon fire, bombs, and other powder-based explosives, a grenade is not really that out of place.

Plus OoT had a Jukebox, just saying.

A magical damaging harp is much more nonsensical than a grenade. Sheik uses the harp in OoT to teach Link songs (to play on his ocarina), but in the context of Smash Bros., there isn't much practical use for it outside of something like a victory animation. Link doesn't have a random ocarina attack in Smash Bros., after all.

Sakurai once said something to the effect of, "rather than pulling attacks/attributes directly from a game for the sake of it, the characters should feel natural," and I believe that applies in the case of Sheik. She doesn't use any of her Smash Bros. attacks in Ocarina of Time, but if Sheik applied herself to a hypothetical battle, she'd probably fight something like her Smash Bros. incarnation.
I disagree completely with the grenade since again it was invented in the early 1900's and Sheik is a character from medieval fantasy period.

However I do get your point of the character and flow that a harp might mess up. With that said I think a quick strum of the harp creating a small burst of wind would be interesting and still work with the flow of her character. Itd also be a greater service to her character and the series since music is incredibly important to the series and the series is full of magical instruments. I dont think it'd interrupt the characters flow anymore than the darts or charging the darts were.

Anyway I see I'm in the minority here so I'll leave it be. Perhaps Zelda having music based elemental attacks would work better since she is a magic user and has used a variety of magical instruments throughout the series such as the Goddess' Lyre, Ocarina of Time and Spirit Flute.

Now I want this guy to be an assist trophy that plays the song of storm which causes wind and rain.

If link can use bombs, sheik can use grenades.

The pull-and-throw "pineapple" grenade was invented in the early 1900s. Rudimentary grenades have existed for a long time.

And again, there are bombs, cannons, jukeboxes, trains, and general anachronism pervading the Zelda series as a whole.

At some point you have to realize there is a suspension of disbelief with some of these games. Going in depth about what should or not exist based upon the look of the timeframe Zelda is set in is a little overboard, especially as the series seems to be incorporating more steam-punk elements, which is inherently fantastic in nature.

Where did all the Geno fans go anyway? It is like they all collectively disappeared after Brawl was released.
I missed this post. I'm right here! I just hate screaming trying to get everyone to love a character I happen to like. And I know his chances are pretty close to 0%.

Speaking of annoying Geno fans, how many of these type of posts are we going to see on NeoGAF once the final roster is revealed?

What were they thinking when they assembled that sorry excuse for a roster? If they wanted to only give us 35 characters, why couldn't they have been the most requested characters?

What was wrong with King K Rool? It shocks me to no end, I mean, they can create moves for Bowser, Dedede, Ganondorf but they drew a total blank on K. Rool?

What about Geno? I can understand if there were some legal issues that couldn't be resolved (Square Enix and Nintendo act like they went through a bitter divorce) but I just don't understand it. Why didn't Sakurai try harder to get Geno to be a playable character? Instead a God forsaken robot took its spot. What a horrible idea.

For the record, no, the roster isn't ok the way it is. Its pathetic and I feel like we were all misled into believing this game was better than what it was. Why was Itawa going around saying that a 35 character roster is "impressive"? Has he even SEEN the roster? Is he completely oblivious to what the fans actually wanted? I mean, sure, they worked VERY hard on the game but I fail to see the awe in the roster. It seems like the way they worded everything on the Dojo was misguiding "up until now, Ness... blah blah blah" but it wasn't true. My respect for the game and anticipation for it to come out has plummeted. It looked so very promising and so awesome at first and its very difficult for me to be forgiving after all the delays and the pitiful roster selection.

I shouldn't have expected this from the get go, but can you blame false advertising?
Nintendo/Sakurai never claimed this, but this was my benchmark for this game:

A 40-50 character roster (with appealing characters). Was it really THAT hard to achieve? They could have done it had they put in the most wanted characters. But, wait, I forgot that the poll was nothing more than an illusion. The confirmed characters were all planned to be in the game already.

But its more than just the characters now. Everything seems a bit "low" now. The item select screen doesn't seem any different in terms of quantity from Melee. The number of stages is ok, especially with stage editor.

I don't know guys, I don't think I could enjoy this game nearly as much as I wanted to. None of the characters seem appealing enough for me to want to try out. Maybe Sonic, but he's going to be one of the most overused characters.

*rant over*

Speaking of screaming about a character with chances close to 0%, I tried thinking up a moveset for Waddle Dee, but I can't think of any suitable side specials and I'm running a blank on standard moves.

Anybody got ideas, just for kicks? I feel like he can work, if we believe hard enough.
Can incorporate the Parasol ability for the side specials. Have WD slide forward spinning a parasol, maybe even reflecting certain attacks.

An ode to the Parasol Waddle Dees.

Tomorrow at 7AM, I fly to San Diego. I'll be up at 5AM.

In other words, if I lose, *insert sleep/jet lag johns here*

Except I won't lose :)

Good night everyone, see you on the other side.

Adding parasol in is probably a good idea and it'd make for a few easy standard attacks.

A jousting lunge seems like an obvious (if not boring) choice.

That was my first idea, but I was hoping for something that worked as a throwback to the games.

Though if he was in Smash he'd get some random moves to fill out his repertoire so that'd work.

Body slam.

I spent five minutes looking for a muscular waddle dee to attach to this post.

It didn't work :(

You can't really use that kind of argument when stuff like the hookshot or the spinner exists.

I like the Smash thread because sometimes it's casual speculation; sometimes it's about competitive play; and sometimes it's Guns, Germs, and Steel.

Good luck, Anthony.

More like you can't argue on the assumption that Zelda timeline can be somehow put on our timeline. There are fictional beings in the game that could have invented bombs in their timeline much before we did, like Gorons.

Im aware that the Zelda series hardly keeps consistency with technological advancements. However thanks for the info. As you said NoA's titling of the burst grenade gives me the impression of something else than what it is. Im aware that the technical know how to make a grenade would be around if bombs were around.

With that said grenades and a magical harp would both be made up out of nowhere for Sheik. In my mind the magical harp would make more sense for Sheik than a grenade since one of the only notable things about Sheik was her harp and the Zelda series is well known for their music and magical musical instruments. That is my opinion and I see im alone in this opinion. I respect others opinions and I see what perspective you and others are coming from.

Perhaps down the line there could be a Zelda fighter or assist trophy that fights using musical instruments to unleash spells. As I said in my previous post though I dont want to continue this discussion since no one is going anywhere with it. Thank you for being reasonable in debating with me instead of mocking me.

Was ROB really that much of a surprise? I know I and tons of other people on the Official Nintendo forums all had ROB on their prediction rosters.

Anyway I dont expect anyone from Smash GAF will have this kind of outburst because we are only expecting a few more characters and we for the most part are being level headed(yes the occasional Sceptile or K Rool debate breaks out but I dont think anyone seriously expects them). However the part of GAF that doesn't pay as close attention will probably cry about the roster.
