Authorities today pondered the future of an 80-year-old man who says he shot to death a woman who was running away after ransacking his home in the Los Cerritos neighborhood, even though she told him she was pregnant while pleading for her life.

Appearing to evince no regret, Tom Greer told NBC4 Wednesday night that he shot the woman twice in the back as she was fleeing along a side street with a male accomplice.

“She says, ‘Don’t shoot me, I’m pregnant — I’m going to have a baby.’ And I shot her anyway,” Greer said. “The lady didn’t run as fast as the man so I shot her in the back twice, she’s dead ... but he got away.”

Even in Florida you can't shoot someone in the back who poses no threat to you and are no longer on your property*. You're no longer defending yourself if they're running away from you and are posing no imminent danger to your well being. This is murder unarguably.

Lets be honest here, the lives in question aren't worth very much. Not all life is valuable, especially when they willing invade a person's home to steal their possessions. This might have been an extreme reaction, but I won't be losing and sleep here unless an investigation shows something else happened to place blame on the home owner. Don't fucking break into peoples homes, it isn't hard.

just because it's legal in some states doesn't make it morally right. she was wrong for breaking in, but i don't think death is the appropriate punishment for that.

It's easy to sit here and say point blank he shouldn't have shot her. But he was an old 80 year old man who just got jumped by two people, after that it would be very hard for anyone to not want to take some sort of action. You really aren't in your proper state of mind after being traumatized like that.

And why is a pregnant woman robbing and jumping 80 year old men? She wasn't thinking about her child's safety then but all of a sudden she wants sympathy when the tables are turned. I have no sympathy for her whatsoever.

That's not the point. It doesn't matter if it's justified or not, it was an obvious high-risk situation that she voluntarily put herself in. Just because it was wrong to murder her doesn't mean she wasn't also incredibly stupid and partially at fault. Both sides can be wrong.

You do realize that people turn to crime mostly out of desperation right? It's like they thought it would be fun to break into some dude home. Poverty, lack of education, these things lead to crime. Just because they steal things doesn't make them automatically worthless to society. It means society failed them.

On one hand if she had not been pregnant the headline would be man shoots and kills fleeing intruder which seems sensible to an extent and on the other you have an old man not willing to heed her plea though she just committed burglary of his house while pregnant.
