Destiny: Only one area per planet

This could be bad.

Could this go down in history as the most overhyped, disappointing game ever?

Judging from the beta, that's not happening. The game itself is tons of fun to play with friends.

Just that some expectations won't be met regarding scale. That won't take away from the amazing gunplay though.

Man one area per planet expected more tbh Old russian you burn through it within a couple of hours.

Shame that the pvp doesn't really do a thing for me, so i had hoped to get a lot of pve content time will tell will still probably get it because there is nothing else to do yet.

Hope it can satisfy me gaming hours till Master Chief Collection.

So I haven't been following Destiny that much and only glanced at the first alpha thread where a lot of comments seemed positive. Got some questions though:

1) Was the beta/alpha area Borderlands large? Larger? How many people are running around?

2) Is there a healer/support class?

3) How's the customization? Do armor sets show up on your character?

That's what I am worried about, I am hoping for a good, long-ish story.

Some of the missions, especially the moon one, were pretty short.

I enjoyed my time with the alpha and beta, I just hope the feeling I am getting about the longevity of the story is wrong.

Actually, Halo games length was only 8-12 hours but people do not have any complaint about it.

(But I expect destiny to have at least 10 hours in story mode anyway.)

After playing the Beta I have absolutely no reservations with my preorder. I would like to see some minor tweaks and better shadows for the PS4 version, that's about it. I sunk days into that without even playing too much multiplayer. This game will have FAR more bang for the buck than the vast majority of the games I have purchased for new gen.

I don't get the outcry. People are expecting way too much.
It's a big game with a big publisher that a lot of people are enjoying. People have things to shoot at even if they can't cite game-specific stuff, you can see the shitposts in every thread. Criticisms will be scaled and hyperbole will be stretched to counter people's glee and enjoyment. The "I don't get what you all like so much about this game!" threads are a litmus test for this sort of thing. Now the world is "tiny," apparently.

The time for civil discourse is not now, especially when most reasoning cites problem with a vertical slice of content that is mostly a tutorial, a subset of maps, a subset of online features and a subset of gameplay breadth/depth, all of which we know will have much greater components in the final game.

I've already had enough of Destiny threads before I actually played the damn thing. And then I play it and have all these amazing encounters with AI rivaling some of the most memorably scenarios I've had in Halo. Welp, pre-order cancelled because I put 20 hours into 1/5 of the games content and I judge a game by its content first and foremost.

Considering I've played and enjoyed the alpha and beta combined more than most retail games I'm going to say no.

Dont be so sure. A hell of a lot of people loved SWTOR starting out(I still love the game), it wasnt until end game(and the lack of it) where SWTOR started to take a massive hit. It finally is growing again, but only after substantial amount of additions of content. I dont think this will end up like SWTOR, mainly because a Halo like FPS would sell on its own, but I do think they stand a chance of not seeing a ROI for quite a long while.

I feel like this game sort of lives in this strange middle space between single player and MMO, and it really does suffer for it. The content doesn't seem to have enough depth for a single player game, nor enough breadth for an MMO. It's more social than a single player game, so you have to deal with stuff like the constant respawns, but not social enough to reap the benefits (no public chat). Now, hopefully this is just down to poor beta impressions, but as has often been pointed out, why put anything less than your best foot forward?

People didn't complain about it because it also had the best FPS console multiplayer which people could put thousands of hours into.

Destiny doesn't have that luxury.

A lot of people said the same thing about titanfall.

Titanfall was on an overpriced, underpowered system. That narrative was out there during release. Add to that the manufactured hype.

Destiny is different since, it's being made by Bungie and people are actually genuinely excited about this game.

For 500 million dollars and a ten year plan. Yes, I expect Guild Wars 2 level of content. I'd be willing to bet that Activision expects that and more and will be mighty disappointed if it does not come to pass.

I only put in about 12 hours or so, I guess. Enough to hit level 8, get a new sparrow, and a new ship and get full uncommon gear, and see all the story missions(including the moon). But now it's the grind, do I go grind scrubs in the Crucible? Do I go grind the Strike a few more times? Do I grind Glimmer? Nah, I think I'm good. I missed out on the ghost edition, but I'm not all that sad. I'm still in for the limited edition and that 100 bucks is looking mighty steep.

A lot of people said the same thing about titanfall.

For Destiny to go out like titanfall on release day Bungie would have to come out and say just kidding the moon and earth is all you get! Have fun enjoy those mechanics!

Beta for TF was everything but the bullcrap single player which was nothing and I like titanfall.

Bullshit your just making excuses it was the same back then.

I'm also having an, "Is that all there is?" moment in reaction to this news, but I'm not sure I'm being fair. There's probably enough content in there to keep me and my friends busy for months, since we only play twice a week -- about 6 hours total. So in that sense, it's probably fine. The production values seem great.

The following honestly bothers me, however:

The "Earth" itself is portrayed as nothing more than a deserted launch facility located (we're told) in "Old Russia". (Plus, a mall... that's somewhere else.) That's it? Even describing that area as "Old Russia" is overly grandiose, IMO. It's not a country, after all. It's not even a town! It's a couple hundred acres of deserted factory buildings and a few caves. That's fine as a single map; it's less fine as the entirety of our home planet. On the moon we're told that the Hive is planning to invade Earth. Oh, I guess that means they plan to take over that vacant lot next to the wrecked plane? Gosh. That's gonna be awful. Oh, the humanity.

It's just silly. There's nothing at stake. It's incredible that even the "Last Human City" isn't explorable/defendable. It's just a skybox.

Maybe in the full game there will be lore and news about other things going on on Earth. That would at least make it seem like there was a real planet out there, even if none of our particular missions went there.

Man i had expectation of a modern RPG like an dragon age something like 40~60 hours of content. Not an modern FPS campaign.
At least that was the idea bungie sold to me in my head.
What are the plans on post launch content outside of the two expansion packs?

Are we seeing a concession to last gen machines??

Besides resolution / graphics, arent the two feature equal?? (if im way off, banish me to the lvl 20 caves)

3 man fire teams, 'if you can see it you can go there' is a myth now...the game runs (well) on 512k of ram

Everyone keeps saying Destiny is like PSO. I guess I would've loved PSO back in the day then. Never played it.

PSO was not a super good "game". The characters auto-aimed for you and the skill involved in registering a hit was pretty limited. I guess you could time your attacks to get combos down.. took some skill especially the really good weapons that could register some bonuses to the HP with good timing.

The skill was entirely based on your ability to strategize and work as a team to take out baddies. 90% of the game was mowing through areas hoping to get rare items to drop in a crate or to fight a blue version of a baddie (these often dropped ultra rares).

After 3-4 levels that took about 30 minutes each you would hit a boss that required a decent amount of pattern recognition to avoid being killed and a decent team make-up to get through.. and again a chance at an ultra-rare drop. 4 worlds, each with a boss at the end and between 3 and 4 levels in a world. Maybe 4-6 hours to run through depending on how good your team was. There were also some story based missions you could do solo but they were bullshit and you only did them to get a few auto-unlocked rare weapons like the frying pan.

Then it was all about grinding to level up your weapons, your MAG (kind of like the ghost, but more useful) and your own level.

It's a game I really miss to this day. Wish something else would come along and scratch that itch. Destiny is a similar looking meta game wrapped in a blanket of Halo controls with more twitch gameplay. Good enough for me.

Lol

I find this kind of dissapointing but I wasn't expecting to buy this day one anyway. That PVP is bad and boring imo.

Objectively, there is no chance of that, regardless of the effort some here are putting in.

SWTOR, I think, currently holds the title. Great game, massive amounts of hype behind it and a metric load of money behind it, was disappointing at end game. What was the over all budget for the IP? This is probably the only game that stands a chance of dethroning SWTOR, due to the amount of money invested.

I will give you the hit registration. It was much better in the Alpha/first day of the beta. Announcer too. Everything else can be solved with teamwork, something a lot of people playing with randoms don't have. This game is extremely balanced when you have two good teams going head to head. Some of the GAF teams were within 20 points at the end of matches when they fought each other. Your expierence and outlook on PVP depends highly on your skill and who you play with.

I haven't enjoyed PVE in the Alpha or the Beta. Everybody has opinions though.

I'm not jumping off the hype train because I loved the 30+ hours I've played in PVE and to a lesser extent PVP. My only gripe is that sometimes I do like to lone wolf PVP and it was terrible to do this in the crucible IMO.

I bet some of the other play modes take care of this though. And even if they don't this game has already more than met my personal expectations.

Pretty much this. It is still a fun addicting game but I also agree I thought it would be more vast to explore like zones in wow/borderlands.

1) Slightly smaller, but much denser. Think some of the expansive areas of Borderlands with more structures, and less wasted "desert" space. In the end it might end up being a bit bigger than BL2.

2) Yes, but in Destiny it's not really meant to segregate people based on supporting or not. Warlock is a regeneratively focused class but other skills for Titan and Hunter bolster other classes' abilities. If you come from Borderlands you should be familiar with some skills giving bonuses to the entire team or your teammates skills.

3) Customization is pretty expansive. There wasn't even gear shaders in the beta but it still seemed well thought out. And yes armor is reflected on your character model.

I had to go back and check to make sure but it says I've played 21 hours so far of the beta. That's with only two characters and a level restriction. Safe to say I will get my moneys worth out of a purchase based on that alone.

Do we even know what the vanguard or reef sections of the director map will be for?

I'm disappointed as well since playing the beta and not having much info about the game, I was expecting more areas in the full game.

Even still, the gameplay is top-notch and playing with friends in PVE is a blast. I'll just treat it like Borderlands with hopefully a better story.

Hahahahaha. That is your criticism of Titanfall? So no game can be good because its not on the PS4 and was released for Xbox only systems? Thus it must suck. That is just such and awful comment.

It had the most engaging multi-player experience in years. Nothing else has been like it. The pure fluidity of the combat is currently unmatched and Destiny just doesn't feel right compared to it.
