I DO hope we get some out-of-left-field forgotten character in Smash, I love what Sakurai has done with Pit and the Ice Climbers. Every new character in Smash has had at least one new game since Brawl, and while this is no surprise considering Sakurai has, in the past, lamented the lack of newer franchises he could incorporate, it's a little sad because I love seeing old characters get makeovers for Smash.

There haven't been any forgotten characters in SSB4 (well, maybe Megaman), but I'd say Wii Fit Trainer and Chorus Men will fill the surprise role well.

Haha, I was going to post the same exact list, but replace Pac-Man with Mega Man. I got the 4 characters I wanted, so whoever else is in doesn't really matter to me.

I was one card away from my full house:

Fencer: Marth
Red Mage: Robin
Archer: Pit
Black Mage: Palutena
Stand Character: Rosalina and Luma
Ninja: Greninja
Samurai: ;______;

Thing is, the desire I have for a real samurai in Smash nearly outweighs everyone else. I'm the guy that loves fast paced characters with zoning normals. The projectiles were also really tantalizing because after years of Marf, I would have liked to have long distance control too.

When I saw the (FYI I'm an assist trophy) I swear I heard screaming somewhere in the universe that was suddenly silenced.

Well, least he is in the game Takamaru fans, even if he isn't playable. That's something right?

Damn, I slept through some SHIT...

Anyway, you guys really should have seen this coming. This is exactly what happened with Saki (from Sin & Punishment) in Brawl.

  1. Cult classic that has never left Japan before is released internationally via VC
  2. People get hyped assuming this means it will get a rep in the new Smash Bros game
  3. Main character revealed as an Assist Trophy
  4. PJSalt

Yeah I got Lucina, Megaman, Little Mac, Palutena, Rosalina, Pac-Man (who I was mixed on and knew was inevitable but figured Sakurai would do a good job on) Villager and Robin. Any Xenoblade character would fulfill my dream list.

Hell my only real disappointment is having Rayman in the game in any capacity.

Not Greninja? I though WFT made sense in retrospect but I still can't get over how Greninja just came out of nowhere.

Mac aside, WFT and Greninja are the newcomers that I want to try out the most haha.

Wii Fit Trainer owns, if there is a Rhythm Heaven character I'll be incredibly pleased, but...I want them to dig deep for someone, you know?

Greninja and Robin are suprising in who they chose, but not surprising in that a new Pokemon rep and new FE Awakening rep were fairly expected.

I knew this was analogous to something else. And I wanted Saki from the Brawl days too, wtffffff

I'm starting to feel you guys aren't hyped enough.

Are you Sakurai? Tell us the full roster please.

Wow Takamaru as an assist has really thrown me for a loop! Remember Sakurai talking about the possibility of reviving old characters? I thought for sure he was hinting at Takamaru! I mean after Ice Climbers and Pit I thought he was a shoe in for sure!

This begs the question though, if we do get a retro revival who is it going to be? I can't stand when people say Little Mac is that character. He was revived on Wii years before this game and somehow I still see folks(mostly on smashboards) claim it doesn't count. Then where the heck would you draw the line?

I do love Takamaru at least I love the idea of him but honestly him not making it gives me hope that my favorite dead character gets a rebirth. The time is now Sukapon!

Well, there is a source that Sakurai wouldn't reconsider Sukapon for future Smash, so tempered your expectation tho.

The argument is because Little Mac had a retro love fest remake game a few years back he's disqualified? Well, I don't jive with that but we've got a decent alternative in NES Soccer Man. Maybe Mach Rider. Detective Club GIrl. Mike Jones.

wrong pairing bro

You got me there.

Sakurai said he wanted to revive old characters, but he never said he'd revive them as playable reps. I'm sure assist trophies count as reviving them to him.

Right now, we already have three old characters that finally became playable characters. Pac Man, Mega Man and Little Mac.

I have faith in ExciteBiker.

Also K. Rool

Pac Man's most recent game was...this year or last, MM 10 was only 4 years ago and Punch Out Wii was pretty recent. They don't qualify under these strict rules. Maybe Gyromite man or Popeye.

If they brought back K. Rool I would honestly count that as a big surprising revival. (I don't really expect K. Rool to appear in Smash though.)

It's cool that every character we've seen is modern and popular--I love every single newcomer--but I'm really hoping we get a playable appearance from at least one character who hasn't seen the light of day since at least the Gamecube or 64 era.

Sakurai didn't really said retro characters, just old characters. IIRC. So I would imagine Classic Mega Man and Classic Pac Man would fall in to those categories but I can see your point there tho.

I guess he really is the Japanese Little Mac now. At least we know what Next Level Games' current project is...

I might be mistaken but I don't think Takamaru ever hit the cultural significance Little Mac did. Little Mac was huge over here for a number of years.

If only there was some gaming franchise that featured forgotten characters in a prominent way, thus bringing attention to them and increasing the clamor for more of their games.

So with Tacomaru out of the running for a retro rep...

Sheriff_Trophy_Melee.png

...what do you guys think about Sheriff? I think his biggest strength is the fact that he would be the oldest character in the game hailing from way back in 1979, predating even Mr. Game & Watch, but newer than the Color TV-Game 15 in 1977 so he's still viable. If Sakurai can give him the Pit treatment, he could be super cool and be the Dillon we all wanted.

In terms of Retro NES characters that haven't seen a game in years that would make a good playable surprise that haven't been confirmed as AT's yet we still have have: ExciteBiker, Mach Rider, Mike Jones, NES Sport rep (either Ice Hockey or Soccer player), Ayumi Tachibana (Detective Club girl who appeared as a trophy in Melee), Bubbles, Kung Fu main character and probably a few others.

Half of the appeal in the Melee and Brawl rosters for me was seeing NES characters without a modern design or 3D game in full 3D in smash, even if I never used the character just the fact that they existed was amazing to me.

To me, there isn't one of these characters in 4 yet, Little Mac and Pacman have had recent 3D games and Classic-style megaman has been in a 3D game before albeit with a much worse design than the one in sm4sh.

It's why I hate a couple of the newcomers so far, way too skewed towards newer characters.

As interesting as that would be; it's still not the oldest Nintendo character that could be chosen.
