I do feel like he trolled with Palutena, even if the potd being a statue of the goddess 24 hours after the "leaked" palutena pics was just a coincidence, the "who is this trophy... Its PSUEDO Palutena" was certainly a troll to make people think she was about to be deconfirmed

Yeah, I agree with that one for sure.

Well, I don't really feel that FYI I'm an Assist Trophy is trolling. I think Sakurai is trying to paint the pictures for people that aren't smart. Last time when Sakurai announced assist trophy without claiming they are the assist trophy. There are some people believing that they are playable characters, so I guess Sakurai want to make a fine line for those people.

I don't recognize you with your new avatar. I liked the old one better. Lose a bet?

I don't think "fine line" is the term you're looking for. A fine line between two things means the difference isn't clear.

He used to say the same about Mario, Sonic and Mega Man before Pac-Man was announced:

Huh. Well in that case there is a chance. Forgot about that picture.

Captain Toad can't even jump, man.

I'm pretty sure he jumps in Galaxy. There's one time you find him inside a chest, and he jumps out of it.

Same, and if they do happen then its probably a very small number that Sakurai has already decided on. A lot of good character ideas being thrown into Assist Trophies, stages, etc.

That's assuming that the DLC was planned from the beginning of the development, alongside the main game itself. If it's something they started planning later in development, some characters already represented in minor ways could still be elevated to playable cast members afterwards.

Of course, that's all assuming that there's any DLC at all.

I nearly spit out my drink when I saw today's post! I'm still laughing, to be honest.

Really, with all the discussion about him we've had this past week, I'm kinda glad we got this speculation out of the way.

I could be a dick and list a bunch of bullshit reasons why he didn't get in, like how it was a japanese only game (Hi Marth) or that he was an old game with no sequels (Hi Rob & Ice Climbers) or how it'd be too many blue haired swordsmen (Hi Lucina), but I think we should all know by now that the shitty rules we come up with for this stuff are rarely ever true.

Perhaps you are right that I botched that but yeah, I lost a bet. I bet for Takamaru being playable due to the facts that he has been showing up in some games.

That or he just pulls a name out of a hat.

A hat that isn't big enough for Ridley.

What do you mean nuanced and complex? Those are basically antonyms. I think this is a case of "Sakurai does what Sakurai does." At least he's in the game though.

wtf

Looks like Assist Trophy.....
Welp. That's another character we can scratch off the list :/
And oh god Link's face in this shot. Just emphasizes that it looks horrible in still shots.

Miiverse comment:

Pic of the day. I, Takamaru, have waited many years to appear in Super Smash Bros.! Link, Samus, Pit, and I debuted in the same year! Multidirectional Pinwheel Knife Rook Attack!! (FYI, I'm an Assist Trophy.)
Sakurai just don't care.

I realized nuanced and complex wasn't really what I wanted to say. The point is more that our "rules" are stupid because Sakurai just kind of does whatever the fuck he wants.

Everyone thinks they've got his pattern figured out "Oh, he's only taking people who were in boxart!" and then he reveals Robin and everyone just kinda looks stupid.

Well Link can actually jump. He does it when running of the edge of something. The backpack, if not directly said, is heavily implied to weigh Captain Toad down so he can't jump.
Link has the roc's feather in Link's Awakening, but I guess he does a funky flipping jump there so who knows. :P

Already posted in the Taka thread, but condolences to the Takamaru fans. Welcome to the AT club I suppose, you're in good company with fans of folks like Midna, Ashley and whatnot :o

Random thought but what old pokemon/assists haven't we seen return yet?
I ask because after all the sceptile talk I got to thinking what my favourite grass starter was and came up with Chikorita who was in the pokeballs in the previous games but I've not seen her appear again in any of the new smash pokeballs :o
I heavily doubt it means she'll be playable but just thought it was an interesting absence.

A more interesting abscence for me is Sylveon. While not a previous pokeballer, sylvie was both the rep for the new fairy type and pokemon amie in marketing stuff so I expected our many-bowed mascot to at least have hopped out of one of those pokeballs but no sign so far. I know we've seen Eevee but I never really think of that as a stand-in for it's evolutions.

Going back to MIA assists though, Jill Dozer seems oddly missing too.

Can we please change the thread subtitle to "FYI, I'm an Assist Trophy"

Please

Then you should add that to poll for next thread title.

Added it for you :D

I can't wait for the day when Sakurai announces Super Assist Trophy Bros where you play as all the assist trophies and the assist trophies are actually all the playable characters from smash.

Dibs on Mother Brain

Takamaru out of the running? Now that's surprising! Maybe he'll be in the next Smash Bros.

I wonder if Ness will be in a daily pic at all. Maybe he'll be a hidden character (along with Lucas, possibly).

Pretty sure Chikorita is missing because Snivy took its place as Razor Leaf user.

Wouldn't be surprised if Jill was dropped as an assist simply due to obscurity. I mean, it was surprising to see her in Brawl in the first place (though it was really neat since Drill Dozer is a cool game).

The missing starting ATs from Brawl are Resetti, Excitebike, Kat & Ana, Jeff, Helirin, and Jill. Pretty much all unlockable ones except Shadow have yet to be seen, so I dunno if it's fair to speculate on those.

Obscurity? They just announced Takamaru.

Years and years ago before people suddenly glomped on to him like he was the only possible choice for a new character.

But let's keep trying to call me out on not playing games, I'm sure it will work out eventually.

You didn't play the NES classic, 謎の村雨城? Get out of here, scrub.

Yeah, even in terms of when he talks about his thinking process it doesn't always make much sense. I could see why he went with Robin before he explained in that article, but I don't see how he does stuff like this with a character that is not represented well doing one thing (pin wheel attack) when he has almost as many abilities as Link from the NES games. I think Sakurai does a fine job, but I am interested in how another director would handle choosing characters. Also because I feel like its getting bad for his health with each new game.

For those prone to other fighting game series, are other directors more interested in doing what they want or really listening in on what fans a speculating on?

Don't do this to me. I know she will never be playable, but I still want to want to see her as an AT in Smash 4 ;_;

For the record, I'm perfectly content with the way Sakurai picks characters. He has explained that his choices are based on what feels right and what's the most fun to play. He can't make everyone happy, no director possibly could.

As for your last question, look at Ono (street fighter): He also kinda does whatever the fuck he wants with characters. Another female character? How about Decapre! And then the fans come around and realize she's a fun character anyway. I think that for fighting game directors, they come in with the idea of "What kind of fighting styles do I want to add", and then layer characters on top of that.

Takamaru's pretty consistently been recognized as having existed in games since Brawl. I definitely think Drill Dozer is on a whole different level, though perhaps "obscurity" isn't the right way of putting it, then.

Drill Dozer would have been coming out around the time Brawl was entering development, so it's not quite that crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if he saw the character on a visit to GameFreak for Pokemon related stuff and decided he wanted to include her.

As soon as I saw today's picture, I said, "Uh-oh."

I seem to remember arguing, long, long ago, that people were overestimating Takamaru's chances and the only reason people thought he was likely was because we were locked in an echo chamber.

Didn't know what character I wanted in this game since all I was hoping for was Lucina/some rep from FE: Awakening.

After the whole Takamaru thing I thought maybe a samurai character would be nice, but with him and Lyn out, don't know of any other Nintendo-related samurai.

Ah, I didn't notice Snivy was rocking the razorleaf. I'd say it's a shame as I find Chikorita adorable but in the chaos of a fight it's hard to really appreciate ATs or Pokemon much anyhoo :P

I dunno about Jill being dropped for relevance. It'd make sense I guess? I don't know if we've ever lost ATs like that before though, but I've not paid a huge amount of attention to the list of them until this game XD

Yeah, I have a hard time believing anyone sees that face and says 'yeah, looks great, just like the render we made' :/

They should definitely ask for some tips from the Hyrule Warriors folk, because they've made the loveliest looking link I've ever seen :o

Considering Decapre's reveal for Ultra Streetfighter 4 started with Ono waving R.Mika in the fan's faces before having Bison blast her off the trailer saying she wasn't worthy, I think a certain amount of trolling the fanbase rather than giving them what they want isn't exactly uncommon in fighting game franchises :/

Yeah, this is roughly in line with what I mean. I think Jill's inclusion was more a product of timeliness than the significance or lingering legacy of the game. There are plenty of one-off games, even released around that time, that didn't even make appearances as Assist Trophies, though. I guess Jill might've ended up leaving an impression on Sakurai!
