EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

I am not so sure I want early access to EA games, especially after BF4. That was beta tested for months after launch.

Do you need Gold and EA vault? Or can you just go with EA vault?
Not liking the idea of Console subscription, plus game vendor subscriptions.

It seems this should be part of the console subscription, unless you do not need Gold for this.

What are the DRM policies?

I'd expect games to hit the service when either a sequel/new version hits or after at least 1 year.

This would work well with their yearly sports titles. I'd be willing to pay $30 a year to play every sports game released the year before.

The fact that NCAA Football no longer exists ruins this for me though. Ugh.
I'm kinda hopeful that with all the talk about unionizing college athletics/paying college athletes we'll get new NCAA football and basketball games.

It's an interesting concept. Maybe next year, when they have NHL, NFL, FIFA and a couple EA Games franchises I'll give it a go.

This may cause an interesting scenario in which subscribers will just cease to buy new EA games. Unlike Plus or Games with Gold it will be fairly easy to predict what games will appear on this EA service.

Interesting concept though. More interesting to see how they handle long term support.

It seems like you get a early acces trial for the EA sports 15 games but you have to buy the full game after the trial ends if you want to continue playing.
If true kinda disappointing.

Yes, this is true but you'll be able to get the games for 10% off.

Basically this is a good deal for anyone who buys multiple EA games per year -- especially people going digital.

Of course it's true. EA is not going to let you play brand new games for 30 dollars a year bro that makes zero sense.

That's why it's not necessarily as good as it seems. Battlefield and sports games are a yearly thing and people buy them at release so what benefit is it to them that 9 months later it's free in the EA vault?

Yeah seems like i misread it. Deal was too good to be true.

Nobody suspicious of the fact they didn't mention if games will be added monthly?

At this stage in the generation do EA have enough games to add them monthly? Probably just about, but it makes more sense for them not to commit, they'll add games as and when.

They have Need For Speed Rivals, NBA Live, PvZ GW, Titanfall and UFC to add over the course of a period of time to add value to it I guess

that you have to be connected online i guess?

No idea why this is exclusive tbh.

MS is in a hard place right, peobably throwing money wherever it sticks. They'll probably keep it X1 only for a few months. And just like previous MS-EA moneyhats, I look forward to this doing nothing except waste MS money. If only they would invest in some first party studios

Seems like a good deal but I don't play Sport games and I don't care for getting a game a few days earlier

MS probably paid and will promote it for now, but the winner here is EA. Either way, they would have to start something like this in a very small way for now. EA get some extra money and then get to test it all out before fully committing to it and expanding to most other platforms I imagine

EA doesn't have a whole lot of games out yet. I wouldn't expect another game other than those 4 until like at least Fall, which would probably be UFC

Pretty much what I read. Its really not that worth it unless you buy every EA game, dont care about playing years old games and like early trials...like I said....meh

Yeah. it doesn't seem like something that's saving more but giving you more "incentive" to buy the newer titles which isn't that big of an incentive if you break it down.

For someone that has liked sports games, but only relatively casually, this would fit my needs. $30 for the year, get to easily jump between 4-5 different older games, more easily demo the newer games, and not have to fool around with used discs or whatever, that's totally fine for me.

10% discount? Would have to be 30% to make a dent in EA's insane digital pricing.
As long as you care to play at least one of those year old games, $5 for a month's rental sounds ok though.

At least initially, it seems like this will only be available in the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

Test run with a smaller audience.
The snark is strong with this one...but you're probably right.

I don't purchase enough EA games to justify a subscription model, but I don't see the problem with this. Movies have diversified from theater-only runs to video, VOD, Blu-Ray, cable and network screenings, Netflix, etc. There's no reason why games shouldn't employ similar options. If it allows more developers and publishers to stay alive, that's fine with me. Now, if this morphs into the only way to access EA titles, it's cutting off the nose to spite the face. Either way, I'm not invested in either the platform or the publisher, so this will be interesting to watch from afar.

I didn't buy BF, Madden, and Peggle, for instance.
I always buy Fifa the day it's out, already have Fifa 14.

So for 30 bucks: I'll pay 54 bucks for Fifa, get it a week early; pay 54 usd for DA, get it a week early; I'll play BF and Madden and Peggle (and anything else they offer) for 1 year.

So I'll actually pay 18 dollars for a year of BF3, Madden 25 and Peggle 2 access, and early access for Fifa and Dragon Age.

How is it bad?

For $30 a year, isn't this a no-brainer for anyone the buys annual sports franchises or battlefield?

I'll try it out for one year to see how it goes. I would like the early access to FIFA but the 10% off is only available if you buy direct from them right? I usually buy from other places not sure how it's beneficial to me.

They won't, at least not until 2016 or 2017. That's the point the of the 10% discount + 5 day trial. They still want you to buy the actual games.

I see... It makes sense, otherwise it would be too much of a big deal, that would be strange coming from EA. Lol

Well, if thats the case, Im out!

Far Cry 4 has a deal with Sony on PS3/4 for the "keys to Kyrat" co-op mode with friends who don't own the game.

Sony has that, I'm sure it wasn't free for them.

MS have this deal with EA, its just competition.

Nobody suspicious of the fact they didn't mention if games will be added monthly?

Exactly.

There is not a single word mentioned when new games are added, and what games to expect.

Simple marketing technique to confuse the people.

How i know EA, I would not be surprised to see Battlefield 3 added to this, and they are going to sell you this as the best bang for the buck...

Please people, don't be so naive !!!

EA did not do this because they are so kind hearted to all the gamers out there....

Introducing Uplay+.

I would be perfectly fine with that. It's great for those who buy a lot of their games, and for those that don't, like me, I can do it for a year if it interests me, or I can just not bother and still be happy. Winners all round assuming it is profitable to Ubi/EA

Yes, EA got you to buy a full priced digital title for $1 off in exchange for one month access to an old back catalog of games that aren't bringing in any more substantial revenue. Pretty clever IMO.

Also I wonder if the $30 is a mistake? Weird that EA doesn't mention it. If Xbox Wire doesn't mention it then I think IGN was mistaken.

Why are people not seeing this? ^

Sure you can wait and not purchase any new games and just get them because of the subscription, but how long will you have to wait? A year after when the new one releases and noone else cares about the old game?

The main thing I'm thinking about is, hopefully just like PS+/Live subs, getting the yearly access keys at a discount could be an even better deal. So even though its set at $5 a month and $30 a year, i bet shortly after release you'll be able to get a year code for $20/25.

This... actually doesn't sound terrible surprisingly? Though I couldn't care less for sports games (super-arcadey ones like Mario notwithstanding), so I wouldn't be willing to try it right away. That, and the fact that I don't have an Xbone... but if it comes to other systems it may be something to look at.
