EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

Bish summed up my thoughts perfectly on this. Wish I gave two shits about EA games, aside from Mass Effect. I'll just stick to Origin since I have the trilogy on there.
and 2/3 of the Trilogy on Steam

Still, it's good for those who own the bone and want jump in the sack with EA for the long haul.
However, I wonder if people will get the shaft more often because of this service, and by shaft, I mean getting treated like 2nd rate because we're not subbed to this new service.

I'm forward thinking and have, at one time thought that at some point, once Digital finally settles in, how this industry could one day be fragmented to the where everything has to be bought in separate stores runned by the publishers who own the IPs.

Watching from afar indeed.

Exactly. A per device subscription service is convenient, a per publisher service is a mess and it will add up if you subscribe to multiple publishers services. The only advantage is that the user can choose which publisher to subscribe but that is limiting.

Came to post this. This isn't Netflix, it's a version of it for each studio.

Xbox One only? Someone please explain this logic

- Battlefield 4 timed exclusive dlc
- P vs Z GW timed exclusive
- Peggle 2 timed exclusive
- Titanfall paid exclusive (sorry, I don't believe the fairy tale of heroic Microsoft)

Does it really need to be spelled out here?

i think this is EA's way of combating PSNow/PS+, which is why this is xbone exclusive...

But why? What does EA have to gain in such a situation. Why wouldn't' this be on the market leader platform too?

What's going on with EA? How much money is MS throwing at them where they would ignore the much larger install base. Did Jon Richetello's leaving of EA prompt a fallout between EA and Sony? OR is the new president just have a thing for Microsoft.

It doesn't make a lick of sense. About as much sense as Magic 2015 not going to playstation brand this year... I smell timed exclusive.

Although this brings up a boat load of questions... the games it's offering aren't my style anyway. I don't buy sports games and already own BF4... and there's that little fact that I don't own or plan to own a xbox1.

That's true. So you'll sub for a month, and get the 10% discount? Or you'll be buying 5+ EA games per year?

if you end up buying 2 games and their DLC, you essentially save as much money as you spent... while getting access to the game vault, and saving potentially even more money on other purchases.

in the last year I bought titanfall, battlefield 4, their season passes, and peggle. so I would have saved more money than I spent on the subscription, and would have been able to play FIFA and Madden.

and they are just going to continue adding games to the game vault? sounds good to me

5 days may not be bad if you actually get to play it however long you want in those 5 days..... somehow I doubt it'll be the full game. Probably more akin to PSN Full game trials

They were fully unlocked when they did this on 360, you couldn't get the achievements but they would unlock when you bought the game.

Based on them saying you can transfer saves, it seems like you have full access but it shuts down your game on release. If you buy the game for 10% off, it unlocks and you have the game day one with your progress. If you unlock it later, same situation.

Honestly doesn't sound like a good deal at all, who wants to play year old sport titles? Or an online game like BF4 that if you are s fan of there is no way you gonna wait a year for.

I don't get the value, it's cheaper to buy the game you want when it's out than pay a subscription for 10% off, EA games are mostly the type that you play for a ton of time anyway, if you like FIFA you most likely won't care about Madden or NBA, most stick to one title, doesn't sound appealing for me but you can't complain on more options.

I'll just throw a disclaimer so people do not think I'm talking about the Xbox One here, it's not about that.

Watch them lock exclusive content behind this service, like Sony did with Destiny. Could be good for them, like it was for Sony, but for the consumer? Hmm..

If they did it's be great. Pay 5 bucks, play the hell out of it, cancel, then wait til DAI hits the bargain bin to play it again. That's probably exactly why it won't work like that.

Exactly too many ways to exploit such a system. But maybe it does work like that with MP games like BF:Hardline.

No. $30 is 10% of $300. So you need to spend enough money to get more than a $30 total discount.

And if you are buying all those games and DLC (that will eventually end up in the vault 2-3 years later), the vault isn't that valuable since you already bought those games ~$300 worth PER YEAR.

Why do I get the feeling that eventually this will turn into: "also get EA games released five days earlier on the XB1 should you subscribe (and five days later on the PS4 and other platforms)." lol

This will sell consoles to sports gamers

Needs more info but from what I can read now I'd be paying so much a year (I'm assuming £30 here in the UK but who knows, could be £20) for "trials/demos" of games 5 days before launch, last years sporting games, discounts of 10% on digital puchases (not unusual for retail to be up to 10% cheaper than digital) plus whatever else they place in the vault.

Also suspicious of them pushing games further towards microtransactions and IAP so whatever I'm given for free in the vault still has a potential cost.

I think it is mainly because Sony didnt want publishers to compete with its PS+. If every publisher like Ubi, 2K, EA start their own service, then PS+ can't get any good AAA games.

Wow, I wonder if enough morons bought the supposed "UFC $5 error demo" last month, that they saw the money in this. I'm guessing they could be linked.. It was a test, and it passed. It's EA after all.

Xbox only? lolololololol good move EA.

More exclusivity! I hope everyone pissing and moaning in the Destiny thread feels the same way about this kind of stuff.

sounds like a decent service for people that love EA games.

So for $5 in November, you can play a boatload of EA games for 30 days. If I had an XB1 I'd do that in a heartbeat. That's so cheap and you get to play several games (granted most are sport) but the $5 to play DA Inquisition would be worth.

EA saw ps+, saw ms copy it and decided to do it for themselves.

Anyone who thinks they're buying into all EA's latest titles for $30 a year (lolol) should read the bolded text:

ea access tos said:
As part of the EA Access Services, members with an active subscription are offered (1) the ability to play a limited trial of certain EA Content 5 days prior to the date that EA Content is otherwise available on the Xbox Marketplace (“Play First”), (2) discounts on EA Content offered through the Xbox Marketplace (“Discounts”); and (3) access to a limited library of certain EA Content (“Vault Title(s)”) for unlimited online play (“Vault Access”) for the duration of their availability in the Vault. Limitations and exclusions may apply. For upcoming EA Content eligible for Play First and Discounts, and for current EA Content available in the Vault, and current details on other membership benefits, see http://www.ea.com/eaaccess. Certain EA Content may be excluded from Play First, the Vault, and/or Discounts; see http://www.ea.com/eaaccess for details on such exclusions as they become available.

EA reserves the right to change and update the EA Access Services, and the EA Content offered through the EA Access Services without any liability to you. In particular, Vault Titles are subject to change and may be removed, and the online services for certain Vault Titles may be discontinued. In the event that EA changes the EA Access Services, including the removal of Vault Titles or discontinuation of online services for certain Vault Titles, we will provide thirty (30) days advance notice to you by posting a notice on http://www.ea.com/eaaccess.

You may cancel your subscription at any time for any reason. In addition, Microsoft may terminate your subscription if you fail to comply with the Microsoft Terms of Use (http://www.xbox.com/livetou). Likewise, EA may terminate your Origin Account, thereby blocking you from the EA Access Services, for any violation of the EA Terms of Services (http://www.ea.com/terms-of-service). Please note, unless required by law, all EA Content (such as in-game entitlements, add-on content, and downloadable content) purchased in connection with the EA Access Services (including, without limitation, purchases made during Vault Titles) are non-refundable and non-transferable. If your subscription to EA Access is cancelled or otherwise terminated, you will not have further access EA Content until and unless you purchase the EA Content or Vault Title separately. In addition, Vault Titles contain functionality designed to disable access to those Vault Titles in the event that (i) your subscription is canceled or otherwise terminated or (ii) EA decides, in its sole discretion to remove certain Vault Titles as described above.

So instead of demos EA now gives us 5 day trials for money.
they are geniuses.

Be interesting to see if these 5 day trials also appear in the store for $4.99 separately, as recent demos did "in error".

If they did it's be great. Pay 5 bucks, play the hell out of it, cancel, then wait til DAI hits the bargain bin to play it again. That's probably exactly why it won't work like that.

Sounds like you can play 5 days before but for a limited time.

Play First – Membership in EA Access lets you experience trials of new EA games up to five days before the release date.*

*Conditions, limitations and exclusions apply. See www.ea.com/eaaccess for details.

PLAY FIRST

If you’re an EA Access member, you can download upcoming EA games five days before the release date to play for a limited time. Madden NFL 15, NHL 15, FIFA 15, NBA LIVE 15 and Dragon Age: Inquisition are all included, with more to come. If you love it, buy it, and you can pick up right where you left off.

Um, so you're saying it's too good of a deal?

I don't understand your meaning of too good in the context of my statement.

A capitalistic corporation like EA would see far better gains from selling a $30 dollar bundle which includes Madden 25, FIFA 14 and Battlefield 4 then tying it into a subscription service where they are obligated to release additional content to justify the subscription service.

That goes without saying if they plan on removing games after a period of time. They have said anything about how long these titles will be available for those who subscribe. Most of us who are trying to understand this assume the time table would be indefinite but now I'm not so sure.

There are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the stipulations of the subscription service and the access to games offered, pre and post downloading.

But as it stands, I would rather purchase the games outright then for that price then have them tied to a subscription service.

A subscription service for immediate access to year+ old EA sports titles and some trials of the current versions? I'm... going to go take a nap. Some people seem to think this gives them access to new releases and a huge archive of EA titles. No way. It's whatever they feel like appropriate timing for a "vault" and it's previous XB1 titles only.

This could end up being a value for someone who buys a freaking ton of brand new EA games such that the $30/year would actually pay for itself via discounts, I will admit.

Honestly this sounds like something suited for the online-only no-trades-or-used announce version of the console. It also somehow turns demos into a paid service that sounds appealing and not insulting. Need a lot more details yet.

I'll just throw a disclaimer so people do not think I'm talking about the Xbox One here, it's not about that.

Watch them lock pre-order bonuses behind this service, like Sony did with Destiny. Could be good for them, like it was for Sony, but for the consumer? Hmm..

It's old games in 'The Vault' though, what pre-order bonuses would EA be offering?

I think this sounds ok, I'll pay the price if they add enough games that interest me.

you could just pay 5 dollars and buy all the games and dlc in one month.....

But why? What does EA have to gain in such a situation.

Oh, so people like paying a subscription service like Plus and getting free games? They see value in it? Why should we keep giving them our games, when we can get consumers to pay US for a subscription to OUR games?
