EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

There is absolutely no-fucking-way that they would give full access to new games for 30 dollars. Do you realize how much money they would lose?

The same amount that they lose when people rent from GF or sell back to Gamestop. The expectation is that no one plays a sports game for 5 days and calls it quits. With Dragon Age, they hope you enjoy it and go for the purchase and pick up where you left off. Its the beauty of cloud saving where it is locked off until you buy it.

The number of people who will try and jam a full game into that 5 days is worth it for them to get some of that value.

I hope this eventually includes a free-to-join MMO which requires a paid subscription.

My reasoning: I want to see people pay for an MMO subscription which requires an EA subscription and requires an XBL Gold subscription and both of which require an internet subscription.

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I don't get this.

  • Get discount on new games
  • Get to play old games that don't move units anymore
  • Pay monthly or per year

How is this a good deal? It's basicly EA giving you the chance to pay money to play games you don't want to buy because noone plays them. The discount on new games is most likely a chance to hook customers. Perhaps I'm a bit sceptic but this is not good for the consumer. If anything EA has proven that the consumer is their sworn enemy.

When you break it down, it's not a good deal if you're trying to game the system financially.

-If you buy the $30 membership, you need to buy at least 6 EA retail games within that year to come out ahead, or buy over $300 in EA digital content and DLC.

-Buying a $5 subscription for one month only requires you to buy one retail game or $50 worth of EA DLC, so that theoretically you could wait till December, buy a one month membership, and buy all the EA games and content you wanted to save money. But it's highly unlikely anyone would do that.

-So in regards of discounts, no, it isn't worth it for this membership unless you feel that the extra features make up for it. You get to dip into an "EA Vault" that has old titles that are either bringing in less revenue or are reaching the end of their shelf life (essentially all of last year's sports titles), games that depend less on making that initial $60 sale and more on keeping the player count high and offering premium DLC and subscriptions (Battlefield), and the occasional "goodwill" game that can be considered a small loss to EA (Peggle 2, though I think that got some DLC if I'm not mistaken?). You also get limited early play time for games up to a few days beforehand, which is neat.

-EA doesn't mind taking the hit for all this because their revenue for digital is higher than retail anyways, and allows for less used games on the market. Total win for EA.

EA doesn't really need to keep updating their "EA Vault" because they aren't going to be dependent on making sure they get that $5/month from players. The $5 is just a way to make the $30 even more appealing to new subscribers. As soon as you pay that money, you're essentially locked in to a new digital-only store with benefits that won't cost EA much money at all.

A really, really smart play by EA that could be worth it for players who love both sports and EA developed franchises. But there's not gonna be much here for someone like myself who has zero interest in sports.

if you end up buying 2 games and their DLC, you essentially save as much money as you spent... while getting access to the game vault, and saving potentially even more money on other purchases.

in the last year I bought titanfall, battlefield 4, their season passes, and peggle. so I would have saved more money than I spent on the subscription, and would have been able to play FIFA and Madden.

and they are just going to continue adding games to the game vault? sounds good to me

See, this is what I mean. If you bought Battlefield and Titanfall ($120) and their season passes (I dunno how much this is, so lets say $20 for each so another $40), and Peggle (I think it was $20?). That's $180, which means you saved $18, and did not cover the cost of your subscription. You'd have to make the call whether or not free access to last year's FIFA and Madden is worth the extra $12, or any future potential EA Vault games.

Like I said, easy to make that call if you love sports and videa'games, maybe not so much if you don't.

you could just pay 5 dollars and buy all the games and dlc in one month.....

Very few people who would actually wait like that between multiple releases would bother to do that than just buy any particular game for significantly less at retail. It's not like EA is releasing all their big games that same month in the calendar year.

If they offer new releases I'm in for $30 a year.

Looks like it will always be $30 a year for older titles, and then the 5 day before release day advance to play new titles but needing to purchase them outright (but with 10% off).

Meh... but this is the direction that Playstation Now needs to take, subs all the way, fuck individual pricing.

This is all that really matters though.

They are probably still trying to save the XB1.

I don't understand the point in comparing prices of renting PS3 games that are streaming to paying a subscription to access old EA games that are not streamed.

its apples to oranges no?

Sounds like a demo. Why else mention 5 days and limited time, they could have just said 5 days.

Eugh. This has been the case for a few years with EA. They allow hardcore fans of their sports franchises early access to FIFA, Madden, et all a week before the game is released.

Yes, you can say it's a demo - but in reality, these guys were already buying the game and it allows them a 5 day headstart to get into the game.

Huh. Sounds pretty cool. I may give it a spin. I already own FIFA and Battlfield 4 but for $30 getting Peggle and Madden plus whatever gets tossed out there in the next year sounds pretty good to me.

Soon we will all be subscribed to our favorite developers. Ontop of that they will choose what side to support so we will be forced into console choices too.

yay.

You get access to the new games "for a limmited time", up to 5 days before they are released. They will probably use that same offer like with Origin, countdown timer from the moment you start playing that new game.

As for older games, they will have no restrictions, they can be played as long as you want.

Yeah. Sounds like this.

They definitely got the pricing right.

There is absolutely no-fucking-way that they would give full access to new games for 30 dollars. Do you realize how much money they would lose?
What?

You can get a limited trial 5 days before release. It's probably not the full 5 days, since you could beat certain games in that time.

Then you buy it for 10% off.

some people want their games digitally bro

I understand that but price wise, considering the price alternative, is this really worth it?

I get all of my games digitally + sports games don't usually drop in price until close to the middle of the sports season. More enjoyable (at least for me) to get sports games during the same month they release -- get to play it all throughout the season.

Wow, ok. I guess you do what works best for you. Personally, I like bang for my buck and this digitally seems redundant. It sounds like basically, its still paying full price for the game regardless of subscription.

Why in the world is EA keeping this Xbox exclusive?

My guess would be that XB1 revenue is below projections and they need some way to increase revenue on the platform. Without increase in console sales, offering a subscription based service that might appeal to more console owners then a specific title would help boost their bottom line without them having to spend much money.

If they offered this on the PS4 it could possibly cannibalize sales due to its higher attachment rate since the generation started back in November.

Am I thinking it wrong or the early access is just like preorder bonus? Buy the game, have the subscription , and you get to play it 5 days before the other guys. Don't buy the game, wait 1 year until it goes on the vault, PS+ style.

Nope, it's early trial.

Sounds like a demo. Why else mention 5 days and limited time, they could have just said 5 days.

Fair point. The additional wording is key. Maybe they limit certain games like DA for a 24hr play period like Origin?

The devil will obviously be in the details, but I still think they give you Full Access even if they limit your time. I don't think this will be a demo like we have seen in the past. You likely DL the entire game.

Coming from EA I doubt it will result in consumers paying less money and getting more games. This will probably translate in more content being moved over to DLCs.

EA is really committed to the Xbox One since the beginning, I wonder why. If the Xbox One is able to drag down EA with it, it will gain my respect.

The better deal for me is to just get an old version of Fifa used and be done with it for a while.

You're conveniently ignoring part of the description of the early access service--
If you’re an EA Access member, you can download upcoming EA games five days before the release date to play for a limited time.
The words "limited" and "unlimited" as you seem convinced of are quite in contrast of one another. Also, "pick up where you left off" doesn't necessarily mean continued saved progress. Nowhere does it say it means that literally, though I'd hope to god they'd be kind enough to allow imported saves from trials.

The subscription is $5 a month. So you could pay $5 for a particular month, which would get you $6 off the price of a $60 game.

For people who choose to go all digital, this would mean that if they're buying a new game on release day, they can subscribe for a month, save $1 on the cost of the game, plus get access to whatever games EA has in their vault.

If you plan on buying 5 newly released EA games in a year, the $30 subscription fee is basically paid for.

Overall, this sounds like a good deal, and a value to gamers who've gone the digital only route on XB1 this gen.

Not in the uk where digital games are £60 ($100) and retail is about £45.

Don't think this is worth it, but that's just me.

And man, some people are super salty that it's only on the xbone.
It's hilarious and pathetic how EA keeps favoring X1. They got Titanfall exclusive, Plants vs Zombies: GW, a ton of early and exclusive DLC, and now EA access. This, despite every EA multiplatform game selling better on PS4. Not only that, but the online communities are much larger on PS4 for their games as well. They really cater to their fans don't they. Seriously, EA are the biggest MS shills I've ever seen. I think only last gen activision rivals them.
Thread delivers.

well, cool, idea, but unfortunately its ea.
mostly crap games i wouldnt buy anyway..

otherwise: gaming as a service, here it is.

Drag down, huh?

Real great and insightful post, thanks for that.

You can download the full game up to 5 days in advance and then play this full game for 1-2 hours, then it becomes locked again.

You can than choose to buy it (unlocking) or delete it.

Thats how I understand it.

...not sure if serious

Why wouldn't he be serious? I agree with him. Many of the prices I've seen on PS Now are major ripoffs. PS+, on the other hand, is fantastic value. I'm a little concerned that if other publishers start offering similar services as EA, PS+ games will become much worse.

See my post above. They may have you download the full game with a timer. If you purchase the game, all it does is unlock and you pick up where you were before with no downloading. That makes much more sense than just releasing separate demo versions. The 5 days before means the game is already Gold thus they can let you pull down the full version.

MS likely has the licensing set up for games purchased this way to do it.

Wow, this is a pretty good deal for people who buy a lot of EA titles like myself. I can't believe EA is offering this. Great get for MS too. Glad I play my sports games on XB1.

They struck a deal with Microsoft before these consoles even launched. This is probably just part of that deal.

Not dead yet. But they better change the business model of PS Now or it will be. PS Now is terrible in value and this EA promotion just made it look much worse.

We have no clue of the business model of PS Now to even evaluate that.

Which brings me to, how is PS Now even considered bad when this is only for EA games, as PS Now is for all games from all publishers, which can be played on (TV's, Consoles, Smartphones and Tablets) besides a PC?
