EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

Lol, what?

Xbox One doesn't have Origin on XBL anymore than its on PSN

EA/MS is not any different to Sony/Ubisoft with the FC4 co-op deal, the marketing etc. Both are getting exclusive content and features for their platforms

Except that a third party publisher providing a subscription service exclusively on one of the platforms is far more coercive upon consumers than 6 months exclusive DLC. This is far, far worse.

How would you feel about Ubisoft launching a subscription service exclusively on PSN?

I didn't say XB1 has Origin.

I'm saying that EA tried to strike up a partnership with Nintendo and they weren't interested.

MS were all too happy to strike up a deal with EA. They're both heavily interested in DRM, they're made for each other.

Did they say whether they'll give you access to the full game, albeit for a limited time, or a portion of the game/demo or a timer kind of thing?

Each game is different, so each game’s trial will be, too. In some titles you’ll be able to play one of the game's modes for a limited time, while other times you can jump right into the full game. And since you’ll always be playing the real game, any progress you make will carry over so you can pick up where you left off on launch day.
. So up in the air. Likely full 5 for sports and less for others.

Fucking hell. I had completely forgot about the demo "price-glitch" thing. It was in our faces the whole time. And I remember people were saying "it's just a glitch, everyone calm down." "Stop being conspiracy theorists!" etc. I wonder what those people have to say now.
say to what? the access to the trials couple days in advance, allows you to carry your progress over, and you are not paying 4.99 for that specifically

Play First: EA Access members will get to experience trials of new EA games early on Xbox One. Starting 5 days before release, you’ll be able to try the game for at least two hours and then save your progress. Once you purchase the digital or physical copy, you can use your save game and continue the experience.

C'mon, an exclusive game feature/mode is no different than an entire exclusive service that gets you free games, discounts and trials?

What if i try dragonage early and Level up my character ? If i buy The Game that char will continue from same place i left ?

How is it innovative when it's doing something that other companies do, Netflix, but limiting it to one companies products and one device to view it on. That's...the opposite of innovation?

Edit: Oh and maybe pay for demos! Really innovative...

Uhhh because it's never been done for games on consoles?

It's not as good as it seems. It's basically access to older games and the chance to play newer games days before release. You still have to pay full price for the newer games afterwards if you want to own them unless you're willing to wait till they eventually end up on the service months/year down the road. Definitely very misleading in how they're stating how this service works.

So what was the EA/Sony partnership last gen when Sony did a lot of their marketing? Medal of Honor Frontline HD and Dead Space Extraction were only on PS3 iirc, I'm sure there was more.

EA are no different to any other third party and no different to how they were last gen. Their sports Season Ticket was available last-gen as I've said which isn't that much different

But this is definitely the culmination of EA choosing a side in the console war.

That lines were drawn with the XB1's abandoned non-consumer friendly features, which EA was more than happy to support, and it seems they're still backing the same horse that shared their vision for the future of gaming. The DReaM never dies.

AKA it could be a demo released five months after the game's out. All EA's promising is access to a limited trial five days prior to it being available to everyone else.

All EA games are available Day One on the Marketplace. I have no idea where you are getting this. EA states that you download the full game and get a period of time to access it. Why in the hell would they not let you download the full game from the marketplace?

How are people turning this to a bad thing?

This service is a choice, no body is forcing anyone to get it. Yeah, at the beginning it is a bit limited but we have to see how much it can develop/grow.

In any way, this is not a bad thing at all..

is this a case of sour apples?

People are allowed to discuss what they think of the service offering, pricing and whether or not its a good deal.

You get a 10% discount on new games.

You read my mind. Plus, this reeks of MS DRM plan renewal to me (not based on any measurable evidence, obviously, just a gut feel)

I wonder since we will be able to download it a few days ahead, I wonder if the full game will be downloaded. So on release day you wouldn't have to download anything except for maybe unlocking the game. Pre loading for EA games?

2 hours?!? Christ. I'd like a normal, minimally-functional untimed demo please. At least those don't (didn't?) cost any money. This reeks of "was-designed-with-the-original-DRM-XB1-in-mind".
It's a free 2 hour demo and if you buy the game you can keep playing (5 days before release) is how I read it.

.....what? You can still play Madden on PS4 just fine. I don't get this "I hate exclusives when they're not on the console I like no matter how silly it makes me sound"

OK, EA.

Dead Space 3 was free this month on PS+. Battlefield 3 was also free last year some time too I believe...

I know...it still isn't catered to EA games. It still doesn't make any sense to say you don't see a point in EA doing this because Sony is already doing it also.

no i just dont see the point in paying for subscription just to play old sony/ea games. it would be cheaper to just buy them.

And you still have that option. The power of choices. You can try games you otherwise wouldn't buy. Seems win win to me.

Sure!
But it has just been announced and yeah, it is lacking.
It might have some promise in the future..
what is it to discuss when we dont know so much more? EA has barely outlined this properly.. it seems that people are just taking sides.. one side is downplaying it hard because it is not on their platform, others like the concept and perhaps see this as a second coming..

either way, it is a choice service and either sides likes choices..right?

not interested in the "EA vault" but the 10% discount on digital purchases and dlc is cool, early access as well, but overall i don't think , for me, it would make up/justify the yearly fee since i don't buy that many EA games.

Its almost like MS/Sony are competing with each other.

I don't play enough EA games for it to matter... but if this was Atlus?
Still wouldn't matter because I would want to own the physical copy

I think the biggest turn off for me is that it is another subscription to a single company, on top of a gold subscription and PS+ subscription... I don't want to have a $5 EA, $5 Ubisoft, $5 Activision, etc, etc, etc in a years time.... and if I selected just 1 or 2 companies, EA wouldn't be one of them.
