EA announces Subscription Service for Xbox One ($5/month or $30/year, get game vault)

Looks like Gamestop is in panic mode over this. As they should be, their stock dropped 6%. It sounds likely that they are going to downplay the Xbox One and focus on the PS4. It makes since from a business standpoint. PS4 sells more consoles and games, and the competition has an exclusive program that eats your profit margins.

I wonder how this will play out.

This is gonna be fun to watch.

This post would make sense if PSNow wasnt a thing.

Got my Beta-invitation.

EU Prices:

€ 3,99 / month
€ 23,99 / year

Will buy a month when I get home from work (could just download the app in the morning before I had to leave ...)

Got my code and uk price actually is reasonable.

lol

no they f**cked you over a little bit. Euro prices are as well 3,99 for a month.

Yearly price is 23,99 though

Their stock didn't tank from PSNow. You couldn't play the PS3 used games on the PS4, Sony Tv's, PSV (no sales taken from those customers), and they are not doing PS4 games on PSNow. This eats into the next gen market they are banking on.

Maybe the stock dropped because investors realize that this is the beginning of what's surely to become an industry wide thing in the not so distant future.

Not that quickly. It's a direct response to all the used EA games they have. I'm glad I sold my stock a long time ago.

Eh, EA has wanted to be a game service company for the past 3 years... Not sure eveyone wants to get in on that.

Yea I wonder too as I'm also expecting this to come over to the PS4 at some point.

I personally don't like this at all, but I'm an enemy to digital games on consoles so no surprise there. Building a subscription system just to get people away from retail/used games rubs me the wrong way, especially when it's EA.

My 2 cents.

I don't understand why people are mad at this not being on ps4? Its currently in beta on XBone. If its successful EA will bring something similar to the ps4.

im trying madden 25. this is really confusing. the guy in the other team run for 2 meter and i jump on him. then some kind of cutscene. and again and again. why i never have the ball, and god damn UPSHAW stop getting "flags" ?!

Nice, they managed to implement games as a service without having to build up an expensive cloud gaming infrastructure. Smart business move, and the bizarre part is that the pricing structure seems to be very favorable from a consumer perspective.

Of course, the cynical part of me says that the low asking price is designed to ease the transition into increasingly restrictive models of content consumption, and once people are onboard, they'll start jacking up the prices and begin to place more and more content (either timed exclusive or full exclusive) behind the EA subscription paywall.

Most companies don't have the library to make this type of subscription a possibility.

That's true. Maybe Ubisoft will be next as they have a nice portfolio. Personally I think Gamestop has been seeing the writing on the wall and that's why the last few month's they have made certain business decisions (focus on mobile and more recently offer a credit card with high interest rates).

"Surely"? Hardly.

It's also questionable whether this will work if more companies did it. How many people would want to spend 180$ per year up front on the off-chance they might make money back off of it, if say EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Sony, and Microsoft all had the 30$ plan? Especially given how much better deals you can get from Retail.

"Vault" titles still only appeal to certain people.

And I still don't think EA will be adding new titles in any meaningful time-frame to the Vault. If they weren't trying to draw people in now I'd bet Battlefield 4 wouldn't be on the list, they have to get people started somehow.

Well Sony and MS already have this with PS+ and GwG

And only Ubisoft has the portfolio besides EA to bring such a service.

sony supports used games. theyre doing a 180 if they add services like this to ps4.

if more developers want in on the concept Microsoft will have to setup a Netflix like service. having each company do its own thing will turn people off.

I think this is kinda cool, will probably subscribe when I get an XBO. Might just have EA games on xbo and the rest on my ps4.

Care to elaborate, how this kind of service suddenly removes or diminishes the support for used games in any way?

And I'd be really surprised if EA didn't introduce this on Sony platform. EA is not one of those companies which hate money. Then Ubisoft and Activision will follow.

Just downloaded the app. I would have bought the 12 monther if they had NFS on the list, I already have FIFA, BF4 and Peggle.

Guess ill just wait till the add another .

What's EAs exisiing and future xbox one lineup look like anyway? Wonder if this would be wasted looking at what they have for the 12 months.

I can only see EA, Activision and Ubisoft doing this kind of service PSPlus-like, because those are the only publishers with enough catalogue (or future catalogue) to offer.

What really seems weird is that this EA service will be exclusive. EA is not a company that likes to be exclusive... but money makes wonders.

Anyway, if Activision and Ubisoft enter in this game (that if this goes well, it will be more than likely), it would be easy to we won't see any EA/Ubi/Activision games in PSN+/GWG from now on and we have, at least, 3 o 4 types of subscription: PSN+, GWG, EA, PSNow, Ubisoft, Activision...

Lol I wonder how many people that hate EA or are boycotting EA are going to sign up for this? haha going from boycott to subscription, EA really know how to sell you their crap.

Luckily I don't care much for EA games, the only ones I have bought in the last 6 years has been the Dead Space series so this is not something that appeals to me and never will. On principal alone I will never give EA another cent as I don't like their business practices and i'm sticking by it.

Good deal for those gamers that don't give a crap though and just want cheap games.

There has to be a catch though right? I mean come on, it's EA!

What is this supposed to even mean?

The reason boycott or protest against things is for change. One of the main reasons EA has become disliked is excessive corporate greed clearly overshadowing quality and value of their offerings. From removing features from games to unapologetically sell as DLC (including day 1 on disc DLC), to lying to consumers and forcing online-only play (Sim City), to turning cult classics into corporate beg-ware a la Dungeon Keeper, etc.

Nobody is asking for charity, but it's nice for offerings that actually "seem" like a good and fair value - like this. EA is free to change their direction at any moment they choose to do so and I'd certainly hope people would reward such rationality. That said the cynic in me does agree with you on wondering what the catch is here. This sounds great, but EA is EA. Is this going to be a bait and switch? Is Andre Wilson actually looking to take the company in a different direction? That could be very good for gaming, but that's putting the horse before the cart. Let's first see what this actually ends up as.

Got the invite, I own Battlefield 4 and Peggle 2, but fuck it I'll pay for a month to mess around with Madden or Fifa, well worth $5.

Same boat for me.

Madden and Fifa are one of those games where I really don't want to pay $60 for since I'm not a huge sports fan. However, at $30/year and with access to hopefully the previous year's version, I like that. It will at least get me to play games that I may not otherwise pay for.

Plus, the 10% off Dragon Age will be nice, because I'm definitely not waiting for that to come to the vault.

PSNow? PS+?

It's not like Sony is doing Gamestop any favours.

So I got the code on my Xboner messages.

Downloaded the app and now I have to choose a membership. I would do this immediately but seeing how it is nearly midnight I shall sleep soon. If I am bored tomorrow I will get a month sub.

Too bad it doesn't accept Xbox Credit/Wallet.

I would have done a year

Going to keep my eye on this service.

I rarely if ever by sports games (used to be pro evolution in the ps2 days), but would be tempted to try more with this service.

Going to wait a few months, see.what other games are added.

Damn you EA!

Very interesting. Never thought about that. Makes sense though.

Anyway, I just realized that since I bought multiple one year Xbox Live subscriptions for $30 that with EA Access it would basically be like me spending the full (regular) price for Xbox Live but getting deals on EA content on top of that for free.

So yeah, I'll be getting this shortly before Madden comes out.
