I'm not too into the pairings, but Joe x Mimi is my favorite (probably followed by Ken x Yolei) and yeah, of course it really should Tai x Sora.

Million Points of Light never bothered me, but Matt x Sora definitely threw me.

I'm moving through A01 pretty fast. Already at the Dark Masters arc, which has my favorite stuff.

Mmm, really interesting thing I found...
I was reading the whole english changes from that episode from that website and comparing it to Digimon first episode in castillian spanish.

Its really, really strange what the spanish translations did with the spanish version here. Animes are usually translated directly from their Japanese version in Spain, except Pokemon and from the looks of it, Digimon... except that for Digimon seems they worked this time with both the american and japanese scripts.

For starters all the music remained unchanged (OP and ED had a spanish translation of "Butterfly" and "I Wish" respectively, funnily "Butterfly's" lyrics are completly changed explaining what the series was about instead of talking about love, while "I Wish" has a more literal translation). Score from the episode also came completely uncut from the japanese version, including using "Brave Heart" with the japanese original lyrics untranslated.

The spanish version uses the english nicknames given to the main character HOWEVER in lots of the dialogs they also use the complete Japanese names (Agumon usually calls Tai as Taichi for example and I remember clearly hearing characters say even their surnames a couple of times during the whole series), something the american version never does.

Digimons instead have their japanese names in spanish. Attacks are all translated from their japanese version, so no Pepper Breath here, but Llama Bebe (Baby Flame). Petit Fire (Blue Blaster) is strangely translated to Mini Fuego Zen (Small Zen Fire).

Dialogs are faithful to the american version (things like Tai presenting the characters at the beggining with him being an asshole, Digimons presenting themselves, Joe being a coward and not wanting to catch a cold, etc...), at least from what I see from the first episode, HOWEVER (again) any added dialog (shitty jokes out of nowhere, over explanations, phrases when not zooming that character, characters not moving lips but talking, etc...) are out. Some examples:
Tai does a surfing joke when the tidal wave engulfs them. Japanese version has the kids screaming for their lives, same as the spanish version.
Matt saying we need an helicopter, bugspray... all out from the spanish version.
Sora explaining how they seem to have evolved while the camera pans over the digimons... out also.

By the time in the first episode that the digimons fight against Kuwagamon, the dialogs start to look less like the american script and more like the japanese ones, and totally changing by the end of the episode (all the stupid dialogs the characters say during the victory sequence are out for example). The spanish version also adds the narrator from the japanese one instead of using Tai. All episodes from now onwards start and end with this narrator.

Digimon analyzers are voiced through the whole series, just like in the american version (japanese are not voiced), so thats something that stayed forever as the nicknames for the characters.

Any commercial cuts or fades from the english version dissapear in the spanish version, and its completly unedited from the japanese one.

Censorship is also out from the spanish version, and we got the japanese totally uncut. Had to look for episode 6 in that web to be sure, as it seems the first one that had an scene cut from the english series, looked for the spanish episode and the scene is intact. Also the songs the kids sing at the beggining of the episode are using the same game as they use in the japanese (not the "digimon eat, digimon fight" from the english version), with a funny addition, the last song they sing is La Macarena, not present in the japanese nor the english one, obviously lol Although the japanese version uses a popular japnese song sang in karokes, so the change is apt.
This big change in dialogs by episode 6 probably indicates that the spanish series was stopping to use, as more censor and invented dialogs occur, the american script to completly use the japanese scripts.

The thing is, its very strange that the spanish translation started as a version taken from the american one, as it never occurs in animes (as I said only exception is Pokemon), and instead of only using the english script they decided to mix them with the original japanese one (at least for the first episodes). That seems like doing double work and baffles me they tried that.
So yeah, pretty interesting, as im interested in the dubbing/translating industry and how different countries do their work.

Also it surprises me the need of the american version to add lines where they didnt exist, to crack a joke or do over exposition. It's probably as bad as changing the whole music and it's double the work for localisation. So WHY?

I think they put in jokes its to make the show more kid friendly. But that is not as bad as what they did with the OST. Digimon as whole has an outstanding soundtrack that accurately fit every situation across the shows. I don't understand why they wasted time and money composing background tracks instead of using the original.

That is why it upset me greatly when I learned Arisawa Takanori passed away. He was the composer for the first four seasons, and the drop in the quality of the OST shows in Savers. The man was a genius. My favorite soundtrack composer of all time for sure.

For those who only watched the American versions, please have a listen:

Like I said before, I have yet to come across a music piece from him that I hated.

EDIT: Apparently he composed the soundtrack for Sailor Moon too. I never watched it.

That track...
Dem feels coming again. Digimon's ost is sooo good.

Sailor Moon algo got here with a good translation and the music untouched, and I remember some tracks being really good. Its too bad the composer passed away :(

Is there a summary of events starting from the first digimon until now somewhere?

I don't want to go back and watch it all again, but I've forgotten 99.9% of the plot.

S3 totally holds up but I'm afraid of watching the first season again and finding out that it sucks.

Such is life, most things you thought were cool when you were younger end up actually sucking, but I don't remember shit about Digimon, so I have no worries about that.

I think if you're going to watch Adventure, watch the subbed version. Reading that comparison page shows what a completely different show the dub is.

And now the horrid realization that the new show is going to be dubbed by Saban Brands, just like Xros Wars (which had a terrible dub).

The following needs to make an appearance:

I kinda want to watch the digimon movie again now. I remember it being so hype.

Just looked the movie stuff up. I completely forgot about the younger tai and kari stuff. Did they even remember that battle in the city? It would be so dumb if they forgot. I don't care how young tai was. That was some godzilla stuff.

Yes, its was revealed in the actual show. It was how the Taichi vs Yamato fight was stopped.

Here is some trivia for you all, that movie starring baby Taichi and Hikari, actually aired in theaters in Japan on March 6th 1999. The first episode of Adventure aired a day later on March 7th. I thought that was mildly interesting how they choose to set up the story like that.

I guess I am one of the few will really never connect or enjoy with Tamers.

I think I might end up marathoning Adventure through Tamers at least during the winter,

Go for broke and go to Frontier, Savers, and Xros Wars.

I don't doubt original subbed Digimon was the better show, had the better ost etc, but frankly it's just not the show I grew up with :(

Actually, I take back what I said about the German Tamers OP. Turns out I was listening to some cover on YT, lol. There are full episodes of the show on there, but opening songs are a no-no, smh. But yeah, can't go wrong with the German version of OP songs, they were all awesome.

Out of the first three, 02's OP must be my favourite. Always liked that one.

I just don't even care. Western Digimon all the way. I love the score, the cheesy vocal songs, and whatever changes were made. I couldn't have the show any other way.

I wouldnt say that the characters are better or worse in each version (spanish version for example has a mix of the two), and I understand people liking one portray and not the other, and viceversa, but the music is still atrocious and repetitive even for nostalgia sake.

In understand thats the version you saw when you were small, but still the idea of changing music for the sake of it is baffling to me.
For example in Spain we have Dash Kappei (called Chicho terremoto) with an out of this world free for all translation that we all loved. Still the music is intact and Im pretty sure it would have sucked if changed, and for me is a surprising thing to do becuase it makes localisation be more expensive to have an inferior product.

I know Dragon Ball suffered the same fate, I just pray the same thing doesnt happen to your version of Doraemon.

Great, all this digimon talk makes me want to break out my digivice toy. I have the green version of this -

Instead of looking after the digimon with food or cleaning the shit, it was actually kind of a mini rpg. I never could finish it because I struggled against one of the bosses (I think it may have been Azulongmon or something that looked like it). And sliding the card felt so cool.

Alas, I wouldn't have the slightest clue as to where I can begin looking for it. I don't think I've seen it since I moved house a couple of years back but it's definitely in storage somewhere.

Holy hell did I not expect to wake up to this news O_O

We need more information! From the announcement they don't mention/show anything about 02 at all so they retconing it out? (at least the ending maybe). I didn't care for 02 but we did get some awesome stuff from it like this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyTJxvHvgFo

Among others, and there were certainly some good ideas explored within 02 that just sadly never went anywhere (The Black Ocean, Daemon, ect... also those episodes were directed by the guy who directed all of Tamers FYI which is why they have the darker tone) but I guess we shall see.

Out of all of the seasons I've seen (1-5) I'd rank them as follows..

Tamers
Savers
Adventure
Frontier
Adventure 02

Tamers darker tone and character development was much more interesting then what they had before, I also think it worked better focusing in on the 3 main characters instead of the bigger casts like 02 and the original Adventure did. The characters had to deal with real issues like Depression, separated parents, dead parents, being unable to protect people you care about, ect. Hell even what seemed like a joke character in Impmon turned into one of the better character arcs of the whole series.

Savers starts awful but ends up nearly as good as Tamers, at about halfway it gets really serious (and involves people actually trying to kill Digimon) it also gave us my favorite opening from any of the series: http://youtu.be/M0KsrADzag4 I think Savers benefited from a generally older cast of characters (Teenagers) instead of the kids we had in seasons past, it works and towards the end it gets better then Tamers in some aspects (but also feels somewhat similar since it has the final arc take place in the real world rather then the digital world).

Frontier wasn't actually that bad it was just different, I give them credit for at least trying something new instead of just repeating the same formula again and I did like the designs of the Digimon the characters take on but its just too different from Digimon for me.

Adventure was great and honestly it kind of hurts to go back and see how 02 just changed a lot of things and as a follow up it just goes in every direction to see what sticks and in the end its muddled and confusing and ends in likely one of the worst endings to a kids show I've ever seen. Also I hate Adventure 02 for Takeru's stupid hat, seriously it looks like a bowl is on top of his head or something.

Anywho really excited to see where this goes, those who haven't checked out some of the other seasons I'd really give Tamers and Savers a watch, I think I like them more now that I understand the darker tones and more adult situations those shows did now as an adult then I did when I was a kid.

My biggest knock against Savers is
Kurata. That idiot should have been dealt with 10 episodes before this death. The Royal Knights intro was so hype, I feel they didn't do much with them because they only had like 10 episodes for them.

Also, these two should have been the Ultimate evolutions of Agumon and Gaomon.

Bought the movie on VHS a long while back, now I feel compelled to go watch it again.
first I'll have to find it lol

It'd be stupid if AgumonSavers would mimic the original line (and yes, VictoryGreymon is WarGreymon with a sword, a tail, and a thong). Though turning it into Strike Freedom Greymon is hilarious.

Finished Adventure 01. Some thoughts from the final episodes. Spoilers?

-Whoa, I forgot all about Tai's guilt over Kari getting sick and her unwavering selflessness. Surprisingly heavy.

-Watching the group interact with Piedmon was just as great as watching them take him down.

-I didn't remember how funny Apacolymon is!

-I really love Palmon struggling to say goodbye to Mimi. I never noticed before, but I think that detail is perfect because u think those two have the most steady relationship of the team. Do they ever fight at all?

That ending is so satisfying. Feels City.

Started 02 right away and I'm three episodes in! I... don't like Davis? I guess I was never endeared to him like I am Tai, but now I notice. Yolei is still my fav of the new three. The scene with Sora and her after Hawkman wakes up is really sweet.

Spanish version stuff

The same thing happened in Brazil. We got the narrator and lack of stupid dialogue. The kid's names are the english version, but digimon names are mixed up. We have Tailmon and Dukemon, but also Myotismon and Lobomon.

The opening for the first season was the american version, but score and insert songs were in japanese. Zero Two used Target, but with cheesy "we're champions" lyrics.

Tamers is the weird one out. Only one thing that I remember coming from the US version is the "digivolution" term instead of evolution. All character and digimon names were intact. They didn't even translate the opening when it aired on Fox Kids. After Globo bought the rights to air in open TV, they ordered a translation of Biggest Dreamer very close to the original. Best season, best treatment.

Frontier was back to mixing up stuff from english and japanese. I didn't watch Savers or Xros Wars in portuguese to check those out, but I doubt they were as good as Tamers.

I saw this trailer earlier and I'm sorta skeptical right now just because I haven't seen the first season since it came out, and I'm always afraid my memories of it being good are lies.

Wow never saw this thread.

Tai x Sora should totally happen. Lets forget the trash that was the sequel.

sadly, thats probably never gonna happen, i would love if the new show was some alternate universe that would retcon some of the stuff in 02, especially that godawful ending, with new stories and ending, but what is most likely gonna happen, is if the new show is gonna follow tai and his highschool days, they probably gonna introduce a love interest for him

I watched that movie subbed and I found it far more enjoyable than the dub, seriously Kari would not shut up in the dub

But the show you and I grew up with was crap. The Japanese version is far superior.

Indeed ShineGreymon was just garbage.

Not really, the only reason they chose Agumon was to bring in the older viewers that grew up watching Adventure.

Having Saver Agumon warp digivolve to Victory Greymon would have been awesome.

I want Omnimon in this new series.

I don't care how you do it, just do it.

Omnimon is such a stupid name, Omegamon is better.

Alright we get it

I always thought it was more of a callback thing. They're never gonna bring back older viewers with a different artstyle!

So who's the strongest Digimon final villain?

Apacolymon? D-Reaper?(I forgot how they beat this actually) Lucemon? etc

Probably Lucemon, because it required
Susanoomon
to beat him, and he is probably the strongest mon that appeared in all of Digimon shows (Didn't watch season 6 and beyond). But D-Reaper is up there as well as it required a suped up Royal Knight to beat it.
