Arsenal centre back Vermaelen is close to joining Barcelona. Deal would already have been done if Man Utd wouldn't have intervened. [catr]

Rafael Hernández @RafaelH117

Vermaelen to Barcelona is nearing its completion, doubt Woodward will save Zubi this time.

Vermaelen isn't a bad player, he's just not good enough for a starting place or he never developed the kind of partnership Kos and BFG have, depending on how you look at it. If he was happy being 3rd choice CB and a deputy LB and he had never been made club captain (a profoundly stupid decision as it was obvious even then that he was far from undroppable) we would be keeping him.

The amount he "rampaged" up the pitch is totally overstated.

Most his goals came from corners.

Right. We offered him another deal but he wants to be starting which is fair and understandable. I'd be fine with him being third choice at Arsenal. Injuries and an inability to develop a partnership with Kos or BGF, for a variety of reason, killed any chance he had of being successful at Arsenal. Hope he does well because he is talented.

I've always maintained Vermaelen was a bad defender, even before Wenger froze him out of the side.

Mark Hughes (! of all fucking managers) constantly exposed his tactical indiscipline and tendency to rampage up the pitch with the ball, only to be pressured, turn the ball over, and concede a goal on the counter.

He used to be a pretty decent goalscorer, for a defender (again, rampaging up the pitch w/ zero discipline helps in that regard) which compensated for his shit defending somewhat, but when the goals dried up, he ceased to be of any use to us.

I don't like indisciplined players. They're the reason why we concede soft goals to every single top team in the league. I really don't think it's that hard to understand.

Greatest defender of all time

Don't know who the hell this guy is but:

If Man United have withdrawn from Vermaelen talks in order to chase Benatia & complete Cuadrado move, they've won the transfer window.

Let's get the muppet juices flowing.

Didn't Arsenal go on a ridiculous winning run a couple of seasons ago when they dropped Vermaelen? Like I just remember everyone at work being so glad he was dropped.

Sammer made a general bullshit statement, so it's okay for Klopp to personally attack him?

Sorry, that's not classy, that's embarassing.

Klopp went over the top, which isn't suprising considering someone just shat on his work and the work of his colleagues.

What would you say if someone of a different department would just say, the entire department you're working in, is a mess and shit.
Allthough you made spectacular progress over the last few years ?

And no fucks were given later on, it's not like either of them was talking about that bullshit for weeks.
Sammer made a stupid statement and earned alot of criticism and a personal attack.
I don't even wanna know what some folks said behind the scenes.
Still renember Bruchhagen saying that Veh was really furious.

Yeah, they had a crazy streak with Per and Kos and not giving up any goals or not losing or something.

Yeah we had a fantastic run of results from about march to the end of season which coincided with Vermaelen being dropped.

With Vermaelen gone the armband would go to Arteta.

Just give it to Per or Ramsey.

Ramsey would be great.
Ramsey is one for the future, as is Wilshere. Per should get it full-time, I've been saying this for ages. He organises our defence really well. Apart from those huge losses to the big teams, lol.

Arsenal have the targets in place to replace Vermaelen. Yes.

Some of the targets have good experience.

Interested to see who we replace him with.

I have no good opinions and everything I know about football can be placed in a small box and labelled "Fifa and other games". But I have a crazy theory Wilshere is going to fade off and not reach whatever inflated potential he was supposed to have.

Just give it to Ramsey.

Our best player.

Is going to play the most minutes.

Can be the captain for the next 7 or 8 years.

Young.

Handsome.

Prefer not to give it to someone that is 30 or older. Be nice to have some consistency.

If Ramsey hadn't become the Welsh Zidane I could have seen Jack being next in line after Per.

It's the 3 month bit that confuses me. Obviously he's being loaned out while Lampard is at City, but that leaves us in the lurch come January.
If the loan is successful and he is playing regularly, I am certain City would leave him with you guys or one of the Spanish clubs for the entire season. The initial shorter loan would make sense just in case we needed him (a major injury to another CM) since we would lose the cover Lamps can provide.

as if I didn't love Mertesacker by that point, him yelling at Ozil after the City loss really cemented that he deserves the captaincy.

His statement wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be. Your comparison really doesn't hold up, especially given that Bundesliga as a whole hasn't really progressed as spectacularly (internationally, as he later explained) as some like to claim, even if there's good reasons for that. That said there have been a few Bundesliga clubs with good budgets that have utterly sucked for years. Remember when HSV had a revenue (according to spox) of €130m?

Klopp completely and needlessly overracted; he personally attacked Sammer, that was just not classy.

didn't Ramsey say that he felt burdened with being Wales captain? I'd rather not force it. Mertescker is fine. He's a CB so he'll be around for a few more years.

Wilshere isn't captain material imo.

Too immature, too hot headed.

Probably true tbh, he needs to stop this shitty attitude on the pitch and just let his feet do the talking (pun intended :P)

He'll be fine, just needs a season like Ramsey had last season IMO. Hopefully he'll be injury-free this season.

I am worried he will too. I really hope he does a Ramsey and takes the criticism on board but he's still too easily bullied off the ball and whenever there's a 50/50 ball he doesn't have the confidence (and the opposing players know it). Hopefully the FA cup win and having better players in the club will have some effect.

I remember he was upset when they took it from him.

Coleman said he thought they were putting too much pressure on him.

Jacky? immature? shitty attitude on the pitch?

do you even watch the games?

he is literally Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ had a good attitude

I don't think you even watch the games

Ramsey (c)

£2m for Yedlin? That's a snip, I'm glad we have returned to our pre-AVB ways of signing good value young talents rather than people like Paulinho and Soldado. I can accept 6th place much better knowing that Davies, Dier etc will develop into top players. Spunking £100m up the wall only to finish in Europa League is just dumb.

If he doesn't join until January I guess that means Fredericks and Dier will be Walker's backup. Just get rid of Naughton ASAP.

I'll take sixth too. Consistency and stability is key for me. I also think there's hope for Soldado yet. Paulinho on the other hand? Dead.

Paulinho, Dawson, Fryers and Naughton. I want them gone. Do it, Usho.

there's a 50/50 ball he doesn't have the confidence (and the opposing players know it).

Not really. He goes for 50-50 balls that he doesn't need to go for.

He went for one in the Emirates cup that was dangerous.

He loses the ball less now than he did in 2010/2011 when everyone talked about how hard it was to get the ball off him.

The Arsenal midfielder has a long way to go to get anywhere near Scholes but, then again, it isn’t a contest. However, Wilshere is certainly easier to play against and he also has a very serious weakness that Scholes also recognised and that was never lost on any of the teams that I played for in matches against Arsenal.

And that is, if you managed to put a strong challenge in on Jack, then there was a good chance that he would not withstand it. I’m not talking about trying to injure him, it is more subtle than that.

Managers would always say: “If the ball is there to be won, then make sure you win it.” Which, in other words, means: “If there is a 50-50 between you and Wilshere, make sure you come out with the ball.”

They only ever say that about weak players. It is a form of code that everybody understands.
