Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Anyone hope they're going to make a special smash bros 3DS XL? I've been wanting to upgrade.

I'm importing a Japanese 3DS, I already own a broken 3DS and a Pikachu 3DS. I don't want to be forced to buy a fourth one, but god dammit if they do that I probably will.

That being said, ORAS releasing in November...I see ORAS getting one before I see Smash getting one. I mean, yeah, why not both, but still. Pokemon 3DSes and limited edition systems happen often, Smash never has. But who knows! Maybe both will! :D

I feel like the entire Brawl Metroid song catalogue needs to be redone. Can't think of a single track I'd keep; even Ridley's arrangement isn't that good and I'd prefer the Other M version (which is confirmed anyway). Some of the choices are just plain inexplicable too, like using the Metroid Prime theme with the distracting narration that you can't actually hear properly during a battle.

Hopefully, the greater care shown towards the Metroid series in SSB4 so far via the character model and animation overhauls, new palettes and assist trophies is indicative of the series' overall representation. It'd be nice to see some more varied stages and better arrangements - the slightly higher amount of Prime content we've seen so far may also bode well.

FUCK. It's Saturday.

So I've been doing some thinking SmashGAF, and with the Gematsu leak wrong about the Fire Emblem: Awakening characters, I'm hoping it's wrong about the Rhythm Heaven one too.

Basically what I'm saying is fuck the Chorus Men.

The one I think would be ideal to represent the series is the Rhythm Monkey!

I've got some ideas for a couple of his moves too.

Neutral special: Hole in One

Press B and the Monkey throws a golf ball which does minor damage if it hits an opponent, press B again with the right timing though and a golfer will appear and hit the ball, causing major knockback and damage if it lands. A hard to hit but very powerful move.

Side special: Tambourine

Hold left and press B and the Monkey will play the tambourine, causing sound waves to shoot out and damage opponents. Keep pressing B again with the right timing to cause a wave of soundwaves (similar to Fox's blaster).
Pulling it off properly will make the waves go out and in in rhythm, and cause a nice tambourine beat.

Those are the only two moves I made for now, I've only played the Wii game so I don't know if the Monkeys are in more games in the GBA and DS versions for more move options, if not just pull from the entire series for his up and down specials and final smash.

Well, the only Metroid track I know is definitely in is the Other M Ridley theme (Played during Direct), and that's a damn good choice.

...You know, I think I understand what the problem with Brawl's Metroid soundtrack is. There's a lack of coherent direction. All of the Prime tracks were ripped directly from games or ads for the games, so they immediately stand out as something different when every other Metroid theme got arranged. The new arrangements can't decide whether they're suppose to be crazy and over-the-top (Main theme) or dramatic (Theme of Samus Aran). Then there's the Norfair theme which is like whiplash after the other more conventional new arrangements with its general weirdness.

Yeah from what I have played and seen of Rhythm Heaven, The Chorus Kids are the least visually appealing options (still potentially a great idea/moveset tho).

Monkey may not be any better tho
(totally not butthurt about sucking hard at every Monkey minigame...nope.)

I think the issues with Metroid in Brawl are representative of the game's attitude towards smaller franchises as a whole. For example, F-Zero's only new stage, Port Town, did not actually feature music from any Port Town stage in the F-Zero games (wtf?!), or with DK they had two mixes of the same Jungle Japes, or where they focused on Mother 3 to the point where they completely ignored the previous two titles (for the most part)

Brawl's music as a whole was stretched too thin, where tracks were picked at random, sometimes completely antithetical to the stage, and where the original music (such as Star Fox) had better instrumentation than the shitty MIDI they used for the new arrangements. I think only Spear Pillar and Luigi's Mansion had consistently appropriate (and good) music.

It wasn't all bad, but nothing compared to Melee, where the arrangements were new, tried different things (Rainbow Road and Pokéfloats are my personal faves) and were all done by a smaller team, which is ultimately better than having all the famous people attempt different styles in one game.

Man, Lower Norfair is so damn good. Why couldn't we have this play on Brawl's Norfair stage?

Oh God, this bugs me.

Ironically, they managed to get the "right" tracks for each Metroid stage.

I see what you mean by so many different directions. It's like they spread themselves really thin trying to get every track, except they missed the really good ones and the new arrangements suffered.

Monkeys appear in all the RT games. In fact one advantage they have over the chorus kids is that they already have different colours/outfits:

I did like the idea of Brawl's massive soundtrack and music team, but agree it collapsed in execution. Though it does seem SSB4 seems much more focused in that regard, perhaps due to the smaller musical scope of the 3DS version.

Sure, Brawl did have some shitty songs (mostly Metroid), and some songs that felt very misplaced (forest area comes to mind), but their were a ton of great songs. A majority of the stages had at least one great new composition, and some stages had multiple great songs (especially Spear Pillar, Yoshi's Island, Green Hill Zone, and Halberd). Besides, you can always force a song not to play in the My Music settings. It's a great way to accommodate people's different taste in music.

Pick one from the bottom row to join Smash.

Having a hard time picking between Sukapon and Duck Hunt Dog, but I think I have to go with everyone's most abhorred pup. :D

Both Mute City themes in Smash are my least favorite versions of the song lol.

My favorite is either the Nintendo Land one or this sweeeeet jazz rendition that came out of nowhere

I'll never stop cursing Nintendo for not including Nintendo Land with the Wii U here. (It was the same way with Wii Sports on the original Wii in Japan, too, if I remember correctly.) Seriously, the music alone might be worth purchasing the game.

I really liked Nintendoland's rendition of Takamaru's theme. If we don't get a Nintendoland stage, it'll be such a missed opportunity. I'd love for the train to be the stage and you fight on it as it visits all the attractions.

This is almost too good... Here's to hoping we'll at least get some Murasame Musical Goodness in one of the other stages. Arena Ferox, perhaps?

As much as I love the Chorus Men, I would be totally down for this idea! It would be cool to see the monkey pull from all sorts of minigames: ping-pong, soccer, bluebirds, etc. I can totally envision a Fan Club Final Smash. :lol

Will we have a separate thread for spoilers when the game's content gets leaked from Japan? I'm fine with learning about the roster early, but I don't want some other unlockable stuff to be spoiled.

I figure this is the best place to ask this question: I've got someone I want to play Smash 3DS with, they're on a Japanese 3DS and I'm on an American 3DS. If we both own our region-specific versions of Smash, will we be able to play locally? What if only one of us owns the game?

The answer to this question will essentially determine whether I finally get a Wii U or not.

I've been able to play Animal Crossing locally with my JP 3DS and my brother's US 3DS, so I would imagine Smash would accommodate systems from different regions as well.

Nothing has leaked yet

Your website says otherwise.

Leak probably won't have anything amazing, but maybe some new screens we can fawn over. If there is anything big, we might get a PotD relating to it on Monday or Tuesday.

Also I am now on #TeamRhythmMonkey

i can't really support a monkey as a rhythm heaven rep because of how little they have to do with music in design and concept.

even though the chorus kids are plain looking, you at least hear their name and say "oh this character is probably going to fight with music". like, they're singers, and that's pretty much all there is to them, so they're inherently musical in nature.
i mean i guess you could name it "rhythm monkey" but i still feel like it'd set expectations that they'd fight in a monkey-like manner rather than as a representative of a rhythm game
i see chorus kids as being much more representative of the franchise, though in a perfect world, i'd like a character whose design conveys being from a rhythm game as well

Question for those eagle-eyed smash fans that can find things in the myriads of smash footage we now have -

A long time ago there was a POTD where Sakurai mentioned Link was getting a meteor smash at the tip of his sword on dair but that it would be removed if found to be too OP
Ha ha ha, as if Link could be OP in any way ever, bottom tier for life :(
have we seen whether the meteor is still in or removed in the demo version? (Would really love video evidence if possible lovely people that respond to me)
Still in.

Since they advertise it as a special separate booklet detailing "all characters and stages announced thus far", I feel like it will be fairly comprehensive--kind of like Melee's instructional booklet in terms of how it shows all the characters and their special moves.

Glad to see some converts lol

It just seems like much more of a mascot of the series to me, I mean it even has a streetpass hat!

MRk1nXN.jpg

That's the StreetPass hat that I've been using ever since I downloaded those extra games! :D

Pretty sure tap dancing monkeys are related to rhythm…

Also, almost none of the Smash Bros cast have names that convey their nature. No idea why the Rhythm Tengoku rep must do that.

Seriously, there's no reason we shouldn't have more EarthBound tracks this time around. How on earth this song was not a part of New Pork City of all stages baffles me still.

It's not really so much about their name as much as it is about what they are. Referencing the Chorus Kids's name was more to illustrate that despite the fact that their design doesn't immediately indicate that they are singers, it can quickly be inferred by their name.

How I feel about the monkeys is pretty similar to how I've felt about Karate Joe or the Ringside Wrestler, though to a lesser degree. They're a monkey or a karate user or a wrestler before they are someone associated with music. A monkey would be a few steps above the other two, though, because they at least tap dance and cheer for idols and hit tambourines, which are all music-based actions. Being a monkey just kinda feels like a major character trait in and of itself.

I guess the argument could be made that "Mario is a plumber, by your logic he'd be a bad choice for a platformer representative because he'd be expected to fight like a plumber". Rhythm Heaven just doesn't really have characters that serve a leading role or that are of much greater importance than others, so my feelings are that with such an open field of possibilities to represent a genre currently without a character in Smash Bros, it'd be nice if the character was clearly from a rhythm game. I'm not trying to say "they absolutely cannot be the character" as much as "I think it'd be more appropriate if the character's primary association is with music."

I'm honestly not even entirely sold on the Chorus Kids myself, beyond thinking that their 3 person setup could make for relatively unintrusive rhythm integration into their moveset using Glee Club as a basis. I'll just let my lack of creativity allow me to be surprised if when a Rhythm Heaven character is revealed, and I'll be happy with whatever it is.

I was actually just playing Rhythm Heaven last week and was thinking either the monkey or the girl that pops up everywhere would be fun characters to have in.

I don't know if it's been posted/discussed, but I was looking at gamecube controllers on Amazon UK and it seems as though they've changed the C sticks size for the new controllers.. I may be mistaken though.

Plot twist: right franchises, wrong characters. Chrom, Chorus Men and Shulk are out, Robin, Rhythm Monkey and Riki are in.
I wouldn't even be mad.
