Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

So creepy lol.

I think the visor from Brawl looks a little better in those shots. Both cannons look fine. Overall I'd say I like the Other M costume more for her. It looks sleeker and more stylized.

There's plenty of stages, music, trophies and other aspects in all 4 games that don't have a playable character.
Here's an example of series that, in the past or currently, have been represented by things that weren't playable characters (so far):
Nintendo hardware (e.g. Super Scope, Nintendo DS)
Nintendogs/Nintencats
Pilotwings
Balloon Fight
Mysterious Murasame Castle
Wonderful 101
Rayman
Electroplankton
Animal Crossing
Mario Kart
Paper Mario
Punch-Out!!
Custom Robo
Sin & Punishment
Golden Sun
Panel de Pon

and plenty of other things that I can't think of right now, but are represented in items, trophies, music or stages in any of the 4 games in the series.

Although many of these series are not actually represented (Paper Mario is part of the Mario franchise and assists like Famicom Wars soldiers, Little Mac, Jill, Ray Mk II, etc. are part of the random Smash pool of trophies), the rest never had playable characters in the first place. So far they have only cut characters who belonged to an already represented series (Roy, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Mewto, Ivysaur, Squirtle) and replaced them with newer characters from these series. However, there is no replacement for standalone characters like Ice Climbers, R.O.B. or Snake, and if they axe them it will be the first time they demote a series from being playable.

I think he's talking about going from a represented series as a fighter and then being demoted to assist or lower level representation as a whole.

It would be like if they had Captain Falcon in SSB64 but then cut him and kept his stage in Melee and beyond. Off the top of my head I can't think of any cases where any cut characters meant cutting an entire series representation (I'm not counting third parties because our only indicator has not been officially confirmed/denied.)

Fair enough.

And, well most series have more than 1 character, and all the clones that got added in Melee were from series that were already in the game.
The only characters that are the lone representative of their own series are Captain Falcon, Game & Watch, R.O.B., Ice Climbers, Wario, Yoshi, Olimar, several of the Smash 4 newcomers, and all third-parties.

So coming from Brawl, 5 retro representatives, one more recent series rep, 2 characters from the greater Mario universe and 2 third-parties, while Smash 4's roster expanded that by 6 - 2 new third-parties and 4 more Nintendo series.

Also, technically speaking, neither Ice Climbers nor R.O.B. really represent "series" - the ICs only have one game, and R.O.B. is a hardware peripheral - the games that use R.O.B. do not feature R.O.B. inside the game.

Edit: Forgot about Falcon.

We don't know for sure Squirtle and Ivysaur are gone, lol. Or if you have a source, please link it. :P

That said, the cut Melee characters sans Mewtwo were clones, first and foremost, and I believe that except for Ganondorf, Sakurai specifically looked for characters from the clone "target"'s specific series. The idea of clones even came from the idea of including Pichu in the first place. That's also why he approached IS about Leif (who was later transformed to Roy), and why his first considerations for Fox and Mario clones were Wolf and Wario, but ended up being Falco and Doc.
And we've already discussed Mewtwo's exclusion - given his leftover data, it's very likely that his removal from Brawl's roster was more due to several unfortunate circumstances falling together rather than him being targeted specifically due to his series.

I think they're cute.

A lot of the ones in StreetPass Plaza are actually really cool, so I hope they're all in Smash. (That would be quite a lot though...)

Possibly. I'm not sure why you think a totally unique character like ROB has the same chances as two clones.

This is how I see it.

Basically Confirmed
Wario
Mr. Game & Watch
Meta Knight
Ice Climbers

Very Likely
Ganondorf
R.O.B.
Falco/Wolf (One of them.)
Ness/Lucas (One of them.)
Jigglypuff

Maybe
Falco/Wolf (The leftover one.)
Ness/Lucas (The leftover one.)
Snake

Probably Not
Squirtle
Ivysaur

Snake is definitely out because with the addition of Sheik being a standalone character, she essentially has most of what made Snake a unique addition to Smash Bros.

Are you guys forgetting that little thing they did at E3? lol

Yeah I don't understand why this seems to come to a surprise? I mean, Gamescom is the biggest gaming-related event in Europe.

Yeah, Sheik got the rocket launcher, the C4, the remote bomb, the cypher, the mortar, even the CQC moves... I really don't understand why nobody considered her a Snake clone in Brawl already. She's heavy and slow and packs a punch, too.

Source? I have none derp, but they are gone for sure. Out of the Trainer transforming mechachic they have nothing to make them stand out as standalone characters. Charizard has always been a popular Pokémon among veterans of the series, is the only dragon character in Smash so far and has received a lot of hype lately thanks to the Mega Evolution and Pokémon Origins.

Greninja is taking the role as water-based Pokémon, and there are other characters that can do whip and explosions like Ivysaur did.

Yes. They even contacted the competitive Smash scene in Germany to find some announcers.
Thanks! I thought I read something about it happening before. I'm glad to see that they reached out to the community there too!

I hope it turns out as fun to watch as the Comic Con tournament (well, if it's recorded anyway). Edit: Wait, surely it will be recorded or streamed if they have commentators.

Ivysaur is the only quadraped in smash, she's one of the most unique character designs and has a lot more unique methods of interacting with the environment and characters than Charizard or Greninja does - saying that the only reason she stands out is because of the pokemon trainer gimmick is ridiculous.

Charizard is only a dragon during his final smash, besides that he's fire/flying :P

Ivy is definitely a he with that deep ass voice of his. lol

If anyone really cares enough, I've loosely translated the whole thing. Not that there's anything too interesting anyway.

The fact dynablade isn't a boss in any of the smash bros games is an injustice.

Kracko and Kaboola are my bros, man.
As a matter of fact, you could argue Kaboola can be considered female as well...
Kabulabf8.png

IIRC they even specifically call Kaboola a "her" in the manuals.

I also forgot to mention Lalala, but she only comes in combination with Lololo, and both are based off of Lolo from Adventure of Lolo anyway.
