Was waiting for something like this. Now it's only a matter of time until the Miss New Booty mashup comes along. ;)

I would lose my shit if Crono was announced. Not that that would ever happen, but man it would be awesome. Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time.

By the way, regarding my last post: I was not suggesting that Wolf and Lucas SHOULD be cut in favor of the Ice Climbers. I certainly hope they're not. I'm just saying if cuts are being made (and they probably to at least a small degree), I'd think clone-ish characters would be in more danger than characters with original movesets like the Ice Climbers.

The aesthetic differences between Brawl and SSB4 are quite interesting. Brawl takes itself very seriously. SSE is really a big melodrama with a few comedic bits, and the graphic style focuses on realism and grittiness. Even the main theme conveys this idea with its "epic movie" chorus. I think that worked at the time considering the wait was so long and Nintendo pushed it as a major gaming event, but comparing it to SSB4, I think SSB4's more cheerful and colorful style much better fits the overall feel of the series.

Crono would mean we'd get representation from my two favorite games ever (Earthbound and Chrono Trigger). Seeing Ness vs. Chrono would be fucking epic.

This is definitely my favorite Smash Bros. visually, especially in motion. The colors really pop, and all of the characters are lively and expressive.

The style reminds me more of Smash 64 than Melee or Brawl. Looking back, I think maybe those games took themselves too seriously, Smash 64 really embraced the fact it had Mario vs Kirby and didn't try to make it serious or gritty.

Yoshi in Melee was an abomination, for example, because he was supposed to look "real" or whatever, but he ended up looking... strange.

I agree with Larry that the gameplay is reminiscent of 64, too. People are talking about it as a compromise between Melee and Brawl, but I think it's more of a compromise between 64 and Brawl.

I see people saying this and I still can't see it, it's taking a few things from 64 but I definitely wouldn't call it a compromise between 64 and Brawl.

Hell, I wouldn't call Smash 4 a compromise between anything mechanically, it's Brawl with changes and a lot of the stupid shit removed.

Just because smash 4 has increased throw knockback doesn't make it like 64.

64 has the longest hitstun duration in the series, the defensive options are the worst in the series and you can completely cancel all landing lag.

Smash 4 has about the same hitstun duration as Brawl (although it's not cancellable by air dodge anymore), the defensive options are the best in the series and there is no way to cancel landing lag other than auto cancelling.

I think something like Mushroomy kingdom is a good example of how off Brawl's art style was.

It's friggin' 1-1, the most iconic video game level of all time and they turned it into a boring, drab, forgettable level.

Had the level been bright, colorful and more in style with the actual 1-1, maybe use NSMB's style or something, it would have been a lot more memorable, true to the source, and possibly a better level, just from visuals.

But seriously, 1-1 should have been one of the most obvious and best representatives of a Mario level and they go and trash the idea.

I didn't care for that level, either, but to be fair, it was intentionally drab-looking. The whole idea was the level had "faded" with time, becoming rustic and worn-out, like an old relic unearthed in the attic. It was supposed to be a bittersweet ode to childhood, as seen through the lens of time/adulthood.

I get what they were going for by trying to make it look old and rundown. However it just ended up looking like a desert level.

Eh, I wouldn't agree with all of this. If anything, making it use NSMB's style would have made it even more forgettable. I like what they were going for, the execution just wasn't great.

Smash 4 > 64 >/= Melee > Brawl, in terms of visuals.

Once again, Brawl comes out on the bottom.
I would agree, except Melee was way more visual than 64. 64 was very basic. I think what hurt Brawl the most was the brown and gray stages.
Sometimes Brawl is really great looking:

But this is often what it looks like:

There's hardly any DI like in 64, for starters. Floatiness is closest to 64, which is a good balance (gravity is too strong in Melee for casuals. Brawl's is...). And we don't know the full story on the shields yet - they might be easy to break.

P.S. Brawl hitstun = Melee hitstun. Inability to airdodge during hitstun is a HUGE change.

But 1-1 is timeless. It's appeared in countless Mario games in exactly the same shape it was 30 years ago. 64 and Melee both had Super Mario Bros levels as well, and did the style and history a lot more justice.

A more successful version of this idea would have been to take something from Zelda, where the style wold work better as a ruined forgotten relic.

I think it bothers me so much because 1-1 is just such an iconic location and such a perfect idea for a level, but how it was represented in Brawl was just not right, and now it probably won't ever be right.

What do you mean by more visual?

64 went to the effort of actually creating character skeletons for electricity-based attacks whereas no other game in the series has had this detail, that puts it above melee for me personally.

I meant the atmosphere of the backgrounds. I could see character animation being better in 64, but Melee had some of my favorite stages.

That detail was really great, one of my favorites, I really don't know why they haven't brought it back yet for the games :/

In games with more detail, it would be horrifying to see. Smash 64 was low detailed and goofy, not even Smash 4 could pull off skeletons of every character without looking wrong.

If Smash 4 had a very cel shaded, blocky design, highly abstract, similar to 64, they could pull it off. Any other style and you run the risk of becoming grotesque or scary.
