Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

They're pretty similar, so maybe they'll try to get sales from the Uncharted 4 hype. Like people who have an Xbox One and hear good things about Uncharted, so they'll buy a substitute product.

Lol who does that? Hey this game looks pretty cool, so therefore I'll go buy this other game that kinda reminds me of it instead.

So this is another Titanfall scenario?

Game is exclusive to X1 and gaf embarrasses itself. Some time after release a long form article comes out mentioning the fact that the game wouldn't have been made unless Microsot stepped in and paid for development. Still tears and lots of denial.

That's my guess anyway.

If not, dirty move microsoft. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Thankfully, I wasn't planning on buying it after how boring the first one was. Wow, Ms really don't have enough first party studios huh?

the game has to be timed exclusive, cannot be full exclusive cause what about a sequel? ps and pc fan would get lost in the story not knowing what happened. so either timed exclusive or the franchise is now full exclusive

Naughty Dog must be estatic - zero chance of cannibilzation right there.

SE are gonna get hammered by fans on PC and Playstation though on forums/social media - and there "our friends at MS" release couldn't have been worded better to attract attacks. I really wouldn't want to be in their PRs shoes right now.

For myself while dissappointed - this looks like the very definition of a moneyhat at this point - I'm just surprised at the timing. Holiday 2015? What good will this deal do by then? On current trends and going by the sales split between Sony and MS for the reboot and looking at current trends this is just consigning the game to moderate sales.

A truly odd deal that makes zero strategic sense for SE I can see. I mean MS need to try whatever, exclusives, back EA Access, anything to differentiate; but what we're SE thinking with this deal?

What kind of money are we talking about here to get a deal like this?

to skip PS4, a console selling 2-3 times as much as Xbox, not to mention PC, is a huge pile of money. That must have been one HUGE money hat.

I have always hated the money hat strategy. It has no future. Wouldnt you be better off buying STUDIOS or developing first party? Tomb Raider will come to PS4 later, so a lot of gamers won't care, especially with the super crowded 2015 release calendar.

First party exclusives are the only true exclusives. Money hatting only work when you have the lead.

PC only though if MSFT is publishing. I mean this thread is going 1000 miles an hour, and people are overlooking that huge bit of news.

Again, MSFT is publishing, not SE. Say that 10x over and this thread will calm down.

Then everyone should be asking is what the publishing deal entails? Is the "new Lara Croft" game line now under MSFT publishing wing or just this game? Are they going to move it to PC? Was SE considering NOT funding this title for some reason?

Yep, the interesting things are those.
Square is giving up on TR?

...and this is why I own an xbox one. Interesting choice for an exclusive! Definitely came out of left field. I enjoyed the first one, so I'll at least rent this one.

It's probably a policy thing. Game needed funding, they went to Sony, Sony said no, Microsoft said yes?
Sure, but Sony showed off the game at E3. My only guess is they were going to make it and SE decided in the middle of development to cancel publishing. MS decided to do it for platform exclusivity.

This should really be in the OP of the thread. Microsoft is funding the game (similar to how many have said Sony is funding No Man's Sky) -- it's not a simple money grab.

honestly, publishing doesnt matter 100% but CD or MS should come out and say something like this strongly:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=365700&page=24

the reason they havent is probably because its its next gen console xb1 exclusive, then eventually PC and maybe even 360 (unless SE strictly said it will be nex gen powered only, no 360/wii/ps3 etc)

Good point, i think we're all a little heated and should wait a few more weeks/months for proper clarification

Good riddance I say. Please Microsoft, take all the shitty corridor shooters away from the PlayStation brand so they are forced to invest in more unique stuff like Bloodborne and No Man's Sky.

Unless Human Revolution 2 is a true sequel in the Deus Ex format, you can have that too
I wish they would take all of Square Enix, just buy them out, NOTHING they make is worth it especially the god awful Final Fantasy games they churn out

Exceptions to this would be FF XV and Life Is Strange which honestly could be crap
Sony should buy the Final Fantasy IP and DONTNOD

This thread is fairly entertaining. It's mind boggling to read all these posts by armchair experts on the gaming economics.

You will be able to play it on PC and maybe PS4 after its exclusivity period is over. The way it was worded clearly implied it was an holiday exclusive. Dead Rising 3 was announced as an holiday exclusive and it's now coming to PC too.

I don't see the big deal about this announcement.

Tomb Raider is not a killer app anymore. This isn't going to significantly improve Xbox One sales. If I never play Tomb Raider 2013, or the sequel, I will be fine. Neither are "must own" games.

It's not being a killer app, it's about excluding a game from a different audience + neutering the growth potential of a strong franchise.

A world where Tomb Raider bombs a a franchise means that Square Enix has less fall-backs franchises to make money, and that means less AAA-games from SE, only mobile.

So from what I've gathered.

Microsoft is publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider. Not moneyhatting. This most likely means it's not a timed exclusive, but an exclusive.

Big jab in the face of the fans, but I think it's a good move my Microsoft though. That's a BIG title.

Why do people keep saying No Man's Sky is the same thing? It is absolutely not the same thing. That game is coming to other platforms. Rise of Tomb was coming to other platforms, and now it is not. Hence why people are a bit upset.

I bit my lip and gripped the PS4 controller pretty hard when they announced this. I dug the reboot because of how brutal the game treated me throughout the adventure. Now Microsoft have found a way to bring that punishment into reality. Yes, I'm hurt, and more than a little turned on. They're withholding because they know I've been a bad... bad boy. And the PR release that reminds me I can still play Tomb Raider through the lesser, downloadable game this December... I'll be there, with a naked rosy behind and SE holding the paddle.

in your opinion. The last Tomb Raider was one of the better games I have played in the last few years. Thankfully I own an xbox one and ps4. This will be a must own game for me

I'm all for securing exclusives. But as others have said, there is a difference between securing exclusives by helping publish the game, backing a new franchise, or completely publishing a title for your own system. But money-hatting a franchise that was cross platform that is a sequel to a new successful reboot, is just BS. Paying money to keep a franchise off other platforms (cutting off an established fan base), is...wrong.

I don't believe in judging others for how they spend their money. If you think this is worth supporting, then all to you on that. But I own an X1, and I really believe these kind of practices are bad and can't justify paying for it.

The game is being published by MS: http://news.xbox.com/2014/08/gamescom-xbox-one-gamescom-press-release

Ugh. DLC exclusives, whatever.

But this timed exclusive crap on third party games is garbage and needs to go. Microsoft should spend that money on games that wouldn't otherwise get made.

So why is blood borne exclusive?

every little bit helps I suppose. unless you spend more than you take in.

Guess I should cancel my pre order as it's not coming to PS4 and my pre order for The Temple of Osiris while I'm at it because what's the point.

As far as I understand, Microsoft "moneyhats" for exclusive games while Sony gets them for charity.

Microsoft moneyhats a game from appearing on another console. As for the second part, ill be selective: Sony gets exclusive Japanese games because the Xbox sells like crap in Japan.

Sony fanboys are so salty right now, this would be a whole different thread if it was a PS4 exclusive instead (Don't get me wrong, MS fanboys would just be the salty ones instead if that was the case) "That's okay, we have Uncharted 4" would be "YESOMGLOL WE HAZ UC4 AND RotTR!"

Fanboyz, looo0ooool!

Because it's extremely exciting when a third party multiplatform game that has been that way for years becomes a 1st party exclusive? I guess the money that fans have spent over the years to make tomb raider a age old franchise should get in hippy circles and sing and dance praises right?

Like what?
