Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I'd like to introduce you to...The Last Guardian.

Is that ice in your veins?

CBOAT received a 3 day ban for doubling down on Titanfall resolution claims which were proved wrong on release. Looked at in context of his overall track record, his accuracy is fine. Most of the people squawking for his head post E3 couldn't be more transparent if they tried.

As far as this timed exclusivity goes, the writing is on the wall. If Geoff Keighley can't get a straight answer, Andy McNamara from Game Informer says it's timed, along with shinobi and cboat?

I'm glad the mods see the big picture in this. Why would people doubt the boat after all his/her great leaks? Titanfall wound up looking and running like ass anyway so who knows what went on during development. He may well have been right with those claims for a while.

Slightly more on topic, I'm glad this is all but confirmed as timed now. I enjoyed Tomb Raider 2013 a ton. I'll just be renting this rather than buying. SE already got their money obviously.

It's a holiday release when people are buying new consoles. They are trying to sell XB1's with this.

We're not the audience which they're targeting with a move like this. It's your average consumer that walks into a store and sees Tomb Raider on one console and not the the other.

I believe the average consumer is familiar with the Uncharted franchise, and will also see that on one console and not the other. If PS4 users will be too busy playing Uncharted and consequently won't by Rise and given the sales numbers of PS4 over X1, it might be a better assumption that the average consumer will buy an Uncharted PS4 bundle.

Oh man, the salt the Internet is creating with this one is amazing. This will be fun to ride out.
That said, I've never played a Tomb Raider game before, Its on my backlog and I really should get to it

What average consumer that doesn't follow video game news at all sees the new Tomb Raider game in a store for $60 and decides to drop another $400 on top of that to play it? This person does not exist.

Even if they did, chances are they'd have seen Tomb Raider definitive edition by now, or see it when they go to the store for the holidays.

You mean the reality in which more people have PS4s and intend to buy PS4s than Xbox Ones?

Reducing outrage to "angry videogame fanboys" is such a damn tired comment.

You mean, the reality in which I'll be playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and you won't?

C'mon, some people prefer PS4, some prefer Xbox One. Each get their exclusives. I own an Xbox One and like to get exclusive stuff, and I don't go on facebook and twitter everytime something is announced on another console because I won't get to play it.

Game was slated for end of 2015 and all that was shown was a CG trailer. Do people really think the game was far along in development? As far as we know, game got announced with CG trailer, CD/SE talked to Microsoft, exclusive deal was made, that's it! Everything else is just people pretending the game was coming to all systems, it was never announced for other systems as far as I am aware, except for people taking it as granted.

Nope, he even kept spouting it even when dev's came out and flat out denied it.

I didn't say he wasn't wrong about it. We all know he was.

I asked what else he's been wrong on. I thought the reason it was such a big deal is it was the first huge piece of news he got wrong.

Damn, people want reasons to buy an Xbox and they give you some and you blow up. This stuff is hilarious and quite sad at the same time.

I'm pretty sure no one will complain about MS producing good first/second party IP's.

Paying for timed exclusivity of an established Multiplat franchise won't earn you many yays - xbox owners would have gotten it regardless and those without an xbox now just don't (and no matter the positive reaction TR13 got, i doubt it's got much system selling power).

Titanfall looked exactly how we thought it would look. Cboat got it completely wrong. I'm inclined to believe they never had any truth to them. On this stuff though who knows his record is pretty good besides Titanfall.

Meh, not a big deal to me. If it doesn't come to something I own, its their loss. Even if this isn't a time exclusive but a real exclusive, there are always Game of the year and definitive editions that don't obey the rules. So there is still hope. Just might not be available to 2016.

If that doesn't happen and I still really want it, I'll buy a Xbox One and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Probably used. Microsoft is way behind and I get why they are doing this. They have too.

Damn son...I dont think ive seen an exclusive backfire like this perception wise before.

It really comes down to expectations.

Tomb Raider came out on 5 platforms.

It's traditionally been associated with PlayStation/PC.

The first game did well, so it's obvious that Square Enix would follow up with a sequel, meaning that there is no reason to believe that they would make a deal with Microsoft to fund the development.

It's just horribly transparent that this was a moneyhat for the sole purpose of preventing fans from playing the game unless they bought the Xbox One. It's gross.

Ofcource they're not gonna say timed, not many people would buy an XBO when they already have a PS4 and the game is coming out on the console they own (with probably better performance). Just to play it first? Yeah No.

Above all this is SE so yeah its timed for sure.

Yeah I feel the same. Meh. If it isn't on a system I own I will just never own it. This isn't the type of game I would buy a system just to play.

I own both consoles and this is very annoying to me as well. I want the best tomb raider experience and that will be on ps4. MS is just wasting money buying timed exclusivity to force people to buy their console. It's not rewarding current customers or doing anything that is good for the industry. This is just a big middle finger to anyone who doesn't currently own x1.

You want to compete correctly MS? Get more studios and invest in your own platform. Bring unique content to your platform made by you.

Not true. Games and game consoles are a two-way market. The more consoles sold, the more the games will sell. The more games for the console are available, the more the console will sell.

I wonder how Square Enix could justify this. You only get one launch of a game. Limiting that to the Xbox One will just be murder. An eventual Spring 2016 release for PS4 and PC will certainly see much fewer sales than if they released for all platforms at the same time.

There's no way Microsoft could cover that difference and then some in cash to make it worth Square Enix's time and the damage to their brand, could they have?

Moneyhatted timed exclusives are not a reason to buy an Xbox One for anyone with a working brain.

Where does it say "Timed exclusive"? If MS bought Crystal Dynamics, would that make you feel better?

Is a timed exclusive isn't? People will just buy it once it hits pc and ps4. Unless the game/franchise gets tainted by the ongoing backlash.

Sales a year later on PS4 and PC won't be nearly as high as they would have been.

What this tells me is that SE either has no faith in this franchise, or they're hard up and need cash now. They're sacrificing longterm viability for a short term guaranteed payday.

No reasonable person gets angry at exclusives like Scalebound, Fable, Forza, or Ryse, etc. It's all about expectations.

I do hope you enjoy playing Rise of the Tomb Raider this holiday, though! I will play it down the road once it comes out on PC. I'm expecting spring or summer of the next year.

Damn, people want reasons to buy an Xbox and they give you some and you blow up. This stuff is hilarious and quite sad at the same time.

Do you really not understand the difference between "Giving you a reason to buy an Xbox One" and "Removing a reason to buy a PS4/PC"?

Sony just announced a larger than 10 million sell through to consumers. NONE of them will be giving SE money for Tomb Raider . . . GREAT JOB GHALLAGER!!!!

Did you buy an Xbox One with the expectation that Tomb Raider would be an exclusive title for it?

I'm sorry, have you read this thread?
There's already mass outrage.

By mass outrage, you're talking about gamers on an enthusiast gaming forum, sure, if that's your definition. I'm talking about people in general and I think you're grossly overstating what the outrage is going to be.

Yeah I feel the same. Meh. If it isn't on a system I own I will just never own it. This isn't the type of game I would buy a system just to play.

People rarely purchase a system for one game. You have to look at it in refrence with all the other games coming out. Would you purchase a system for Tomb Raider alone? Maybe if you were a hardcore Tomb Raider fan. But would you purchase a system for Tomb Raider, Dead Rising, Halo 1-5, Titanfall, Gears of War, Quantum Break, ect? Then it becomes a better deal and thats when people start buying systems, only when the stack of titles you want to have gets high enough.

Dang.

Where does it say "Timed exclusive"? If MS bought Crystal Dynamics, would that make you feel better?

Because why in the world would Square Enix give completely exclusive rights to one of their biggest IPs to Microsoft?

Unless Microsoft Games is the publisher (and even then, we have examples like Mass Effect going multiplatform), there is absolutely no chance that this game is not released on other platforms within a year or so after the Xbox One launch. In this situation, there is simply no expectation for full exclusivity.

I'm sure MS said the same thing about the Xbox DRM outrage...

SE must be hard up for cash now. Anyone know what's up with them financially?

I think they most recently posted a profit thanks largely in part to mobile and f2p endeavors in Japan.

You obviously don't get out on the Internet much if you think the outrage is limited to NeoGAF or similar enthusiast forums.

Yes! Loved Tomb Raider on X1.

Even if you did, how does exclusivity benefit you in the slightest? What a weird thing to be happy about.
