Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Oh, right. :
Actually going by the timing CBOT was probably right about it. All the evidence, including the last days material, strongly implies the initial deal was timed exclusive for additional funding.

MS went back and cut another deal to secure the "for the lifetime" status.

So I doubt CBOT was wrong as such. His main miss was the TitanFall content stuff as noted by Bish.

You mean, the reality in which I'll be playing Rise of the Tomb Raider and you won't?

C'mon, some people prefer PS4, some prefer Xbox One. Each get their exclusives. I own an Xbox One and like to get exclusive stuff, and I don't go on facebook and twitter everytime something is announced on another console because I won't get to play it.

Game was slated for end of 2015 and all that was shown was a CG trailer. Do people really think the game was far along in development? As far as we know, game got announced with CG trailer, CD/SE talked to Microsoft, exclusive deal was made, that's it! Everything else is just people pretending the game was coming to all systems, it was never announced for other systems as far as I am aware, except for people taking it as granted.

But why? A game isn't inherently better just because fewer people can play it.

Me too,I love this announcement. Validates my purchase a little. That said id be upset if I owned a ps4, but th again they have UC 4

"they?"

This kind of tribe mentality is gross, man.

I'll never understand this mindset (I own PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, and a Vita) Why would a 3rd party exclusive be good?

Their loss I guess. Only planning to get PS4 this gen, if any. Tomb Raider is not enough to get me to buy X-One.

I have a PC, so that is the only place I would get it.

How about the PC fans that bought all their games for more than a decade before console fans jumped on the new remade/remastered TR?

I wonder how Square Enix could justify this. You only get one launch of a game. Limiting that to the Xbox One will just be murder. An eventual Spring 2016 release for PS4 and PC will certainly see much fewer sales than if they released for all platforms at the same time.

There's no way Microsoft could cover that difference and then some in cash to make it worth Square Enix's time and the damage to their brand, could they have?

Moneyhatted timed exclusives are not a reason to buy an Xbox One for anyone with a working brain.

It makes no business sense for the studio or the franchise. Someone high up probably got greased, who won't be around later to deal with the fallout. That's usually the case anyway. I can't see anyone playing for the longevity of the studio or the franchise making this call.

Still not buying an xbone, I'll just skip the game. Really wish microsoft would just go away at this point. All of their big moves are bad for the industry and bad for simple gamers like me.

Because why in the world would Square Enix give completely exclusive rights to one of their biggest IPs to Microsoft?

Unless Microsoft Games is the publisher (and even then, we have examples like Mass Effect going multiplatform), there is absolutely no chance that this game is not released on other platforms within a year or so after the Xbox One launch. In this situation, there is simply no expectation for full exclusivity.

Oh I see, so the timed exclusive comes from wishful logic... Thanks for clarifying.

I don't really see the big deal. Armchair analysis but this is probably so the Xbox One has an exclusive in Q4 2015 that can stand against Uncharted 4. Seems fair enough. Unexpected, especially on Square-Enix's end but nothing I'm going to start foaming at the mouth about.

I can't get bloodborne but Dark souls was on both systems, damn them!

The souls series has always been on Playstation though, even when it wasn't on Xbox. And Bloodborne was being developed solely for PS4. The Tomb Raider series has been on Playstation since it's beginning, through 1, 2, 3, 4, Chronicles, Angel of Darkness, Anniversary, Legends, Underworld, 2013.. and Rise was being developed for multiplatform. it's a bit of a different situation.

Their loss I guess. Only planning to get PS4 this gen, if any. Tomb Raider is not enough to get me to buy X-One.
You say that like Tomb Raider is the only exclusive game on Xbox One. Yes you made your decision, but its rare that people buy a console for one game alone.

Again, I don't understand. The game wasn't announced today. You already knew you were going to get to play it. Your purchase was already validated! All they said today is that other people who have nothing to do with you can't play it.

Some announcements of exclusivity actually make sense. Take for example the exclusive Sonic games that have been on Nintendo for the last two years; it's an IP that has the backing that it sells the most on Nintendo platforms (the bad boo boo being Wii U here....so this will probably change), so the IP being there makes sense. A game like Scalebound makes sense because it's a new IP Microsoft is willing to fund. A game like Bloodborne makes sense because Sony is in part a co-developer of the title.

This example is one I cannot rationally wrap my head around. This is an IP that apparently has none of those features; it's an established IP that apparently does better on other platforms and has had a consistently established nature of being a multi-platform series from the start, and sales supported that. I know it usually comes down to portfolio boasting, but this exclusivity really looks like desperation, that Microsoft really has nothing substantial on the card so they're willing to buy third party timed exclusives. Sony has done this with some series as well, such as the GTA series on PS2, but they had ample evidence in doing so; those versions outclassed the rest significantly in sales. The only thing Tomb Raider has had an edge on Microsoft's system over any other is that one Underworld had DLC funded by Microsoft, so that being exclusive made sense. How many Tomb Raider games - if any - have sold so substantially on Microsoft's platform and theirs alone that the other versions look like afterthoughts?

I am really bewildered by this whole thing. It just screams moneyhat. I mean, the only thing it does it sort of makes Tomb Raider look like Microsoft's attempt at having an Uncharted competitor...which again, is a timed thing. It's very strange jazz, and I don't wish to come off as shady.

I have both consoles, but I was under the assumption that not only did the previous game sell better on PS4, it looked better as well. This has to stem from the partnership they had with the original title on 360.

I am planning on getting an x1 this holiday and this news still annoys the shit out of me.

I would rather Microsoft put those comarketing dollars towards new original game development than simply buy up limited time exclusivity for a new game in a series that has never been exclusive.

Bloodborne is one thing because its being made along with Sony's studios. This is just a pure monetary agreement.

So it's a timed exclusive for XB1, and then a 360 version is going to appear? GAF has been down all day for me I'm just now hearing this

But why? A game isn't inherently better just because fewer people can play it.

There's a reason why Sony doesn't put any of their 1st party content on PC. It's part of the same reason why Sony's console is the clearly the console to own when married with the PC. Exclusivity matters to everyone on some level.

I own a PC and get the third party games on that mainly. Getting a console for a third party title is retarded.

I never said it wasn't. Just that its rare that people purchase for a single game alone. It gets looked at in conjunction with every other exclusive game on the platform, which over time builds up the value proposition.

Yeah, having to wait 6 months for no reason other than money for a PC version which will likely look better, run better, and be available cheaply faster is a bad thing for everyone.

Bad move ms.

Holiday 2015 is a long ways away... depending on how XB1 sales are by then I wonder if they'll backtrack on this.

I guess we'll see what happens at E3 2015.

Also I highly doubt there will be a 360 version. Holiday 2015 is pretty much all next-gen.

so what's the deal here, timed exclusive or exclusive exclusive?
tweets and early reports make it sound like a timed one but that PR statement reads like it's a xbox only game

stealth edit:
I'm sure MS and SE have an agreement that SE can't say it's only a timed exclusive for a certain period of time, in an attempt to cajole as many people into buying X1's for it as possible.
well I guess that sounds plausible
I hope it's true

kinda pissed since the 2013 version was my goty and I expect to either have a new PC or ps4 by the end of 2015 -.-

Well, no. Being able to play a game matters to people. Other people not being able to play it shouldn't matter, though.

It's a big title that is exclusive over the Christmas season. It's clearly not a bad move if you own an Xbox One or were on the fence about getting one and loved the last Tomb Raider.

You obviously don't understand the reason.

Bloodborne is being developed together with SCEJ.

Bloodborne is developed by From Software and published by SCEJ. Sony just gave FROM money to get the game exclusively on their console. It's not like "hey, we are friends, make an exclusive for us and sell less than being multiplatform". Who knows if it could have ended up on several consoles. But I guess you know all of the details about Rise too. Show me an official announcement from Square Enix where it said the game was coming to all consoles. I don't care if you expected it, I wanna see where it was officially announced for PS4 and PC.

Wow. This is a textbook example of what "Selling Out" means.
It's...impressive really.

This, of all games, is exclusive? I think the sheer shock about it is it's an IP more profound on Sny systems, if we're going to look at the whole franchise. Furthermore, this looks like an incredibly strange franchise to be Xbox-exclusive in general, probably because this isn't really a system seller sort of series. It doesn't even seem to be a Bayonetta/Devil's Third case where companies are skipping on the game, leaving a first party to fund it.

Really weird stuff.

Desperate Microsoft etc etc. Oh, and competition, or something

It's not like this is anything new in the game industry. Nor is it surprising.

Sony has been paying for console exclusives since before Microsoft had a console. It's a business tactic that works. So Microsoft copied it. Both did it last gen. Both will do it this gen.

Besides, don't forget that Tomb Raider started life as a multi-platform franchise. It only went console exclusive on PlayStation because Sony paid for it to get a competitive advantage over SEGA. And in that case, TR2 had already been announced for the Saturn (and then was cancelled) after Sony grabbed the console exclusive rights.

Same story, different day.
