Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Too slow is a huge problem?

It's only an additional menu.. oh well, I guess I have more patience than some.

When tournaments are dealing with upwards of 40 players, on multiple systems with multiple rounds, it becomes a logistics problem in addition to a significant timesink, especially if you're doing it multiple times.

If it's just as easy as tapping a button and opening a personal menu to pick, no biggie.

I look at it like item switching. It found it no problem at all to go to a different menu to turn on and off different items, sometimes on a round by round basis, and certainly nobody would call the feature to switch specific items on and off a "dead" feature.
Similar to items, if tournaments disable custom moves, you'll see many players who follow after that and try to emulate tournament conditions when they practice with friends. It doesn't mean customization won't work, it could just mean it would become a less popular feature.

Nobody wants to play a game that takes forever to complete a set, especially when you and everyone else is trying to get through a 20+ person bracket in an evening at your local weekly, or 100+ in 2 days at a major.

I don't think shuffling one or two additional menus is enough to kill my interest in a seemingly fun feature. What is a detriment to it, though, is not being to use that against random people. Kinda discourages investing time to fully know the set up you create for more intense matches. I would like to do that with more than just friends.

So now if customization is really seeming that inconvenient, than if tournaments were to allow these movesets Amiibos will be an incentive to have.

Ya. Can't you save your custom move sets to your amiibo? Then just tap and load...
I'm not sure. I got the impression that Amiibos were to store your personalized pet CPU Smash character that could fight along side you. Storing your name/movesets would make more sense though.

If it takes that long to change moves, every set is going to turn into CEO Project M top 8 lengths of time, which is quite terrible when running a tournament.

What stage is this?

I thought it was Smash Run, but Smash Run doesn't have 2 players on the screen at the same time

People aren't going to want to use just one custom moveset, though. They'll be wanting to change moves in between sets and even games within sets to deal with certain characters and stages.

Customization will never be a feature in tournaments, it would really add up an insane amount of time.

As a tournament host and member of the Brawl BR, I can say that nobody in there is inherently opposed to allowing customization, and none of us really know what to think about it yet.

It depends on 2 factors:
- How long will it take. Is it going to require lots of menuing, or is it quickly done like picking ultras in SSF4/assists in MvC?
- How balanced are the customized moves going to be. Are they going to be crazy powerful? If so, is it across the entire cast, or just certain moves (e.g., say, Mario's big fireball is crazy OP) so those would have to be individually banned?

I doubt that alone would make custom moves substantially less popular. After all, plenty of people play with items and on banned stages. The way custom moves are set up may be too unwieldy for tournaments, but for casual play, when people aren't under time constraints, it probably won't be a problem.

True. It just depends on your crowd of friends basically.

I actually think custom moves could end up being used most of the time. For the most part I don't think they'll be balanced all that well, so that it usually ends up with each character almost always having a certain moveset. Those are just guesses though.

While I entirely sympathize with concerns, I'm surprised how much conversation is being generated considering how little we still know about how this works (How similar/different are the 3DS and Wii U with this setup? Does having these options on the general customization section preclude any option on the CSS, etc.)

Maybe it's personal disinterest just because of lack of info? I don't want to comment then have to eat crow a week/weeks later because it turned out I didn't really know shit

I thought in Smash Run, you were the only one running in your environment, but the events and enemy placement were the same for everyone? Otherwise the mode would just turn into a game of tag

Well, you can see one map which is a long column in one of the picture. I think it's a climb the tower mini game.

No, Im pretty sure you play on the same map and can interact with each other. Believe we have photo evidence of this somewhere. Also if City Trial is any indication, then this will hold true, as interacting could allow you to snatch some upgrades from the other players.

I think it's more like: you have your own screen, so you don't have to stay close to the others... but they can go to the same place as you and interfere with you getting power ups. Just like its inspiration, City Trial.

This is OT12, how are you surprised!?

What fun is there in that? Start staking your claim. None of us really know anything. Be bold and expressive and lose some avatar bets.

I also try not to over-commit on much. That's why I usually hedge the points in my posts with "I think", "I guess", "maybe", etc. No self-confidence lol.

I haven't had issue all day. Hopefully it doesn't break when I get back home.

I secretly hope it does so I won't waste time in the "I'll just check one more thread" loop. I have better stuff to do at home, mostly involving playing games.

Question I wanted to ask, why does character customisation having an separate screen mean that customisation is "dead"?

Because tournaments/pro play.

It doesn't. It's not dead at all, at least not to a lot of us. Some people just love to complain about anything they possibly can in the name of tournament and "pro" play.

Guys, the customization screen appears to be only for the Mii. All the other stuff seems to belong to SmashRun only. We don't know how special customization for regular characters/vs mode is going to work.

Eh, I think this is an overreaction. If swapping custom moves takes too long, then they will be dead at tournaments, because these things can't drag on all day. For casual play, things won't be so dire, but it could still be a problem, depending on where the custom move menu is located. For example, imagine if it takes as long to get from the CSS to the custom moves as it takes to get from the Brawl CSS to the My Music screen. Would you want to go all the way back there between every other match to adjust song selection on the fly? No; that's just impractical. Likewise, if custom moves are set up like that, people will either stick to one set of customs throughout their whole session, or just ignore custom moves entirely.

But that literally takes a few seconds if you know where you're going. So, no, I don't find that impractical or all that awful really. Sure, I would prefer the custom moves to be attached to or easily accessible from the CSS somehow, but that not being so doesn't make custom moves "dead" in my eyes. I think that's a dramatic overreaction.

But besides that, we don't even know for sure that's the case either way. This is just a case of some tournament players roasting Sakurai for something else that he might not have even "screwed up" yet because it's the popular thing to do.

In this image, you can see someone's profile name (the kind that's been in Smash Bros. in the past), plus the little pencil icon that denotes that kind of thing. Would that not imply that Miis and custom moves are tied to those names, selectable from the CSS?

If I'm sitting with 3 friends I wouldn't want to wait for everyone to switch moves between matches. Especially when they could have integrated it into the character select screen. So hopefully it is in there.

I'm sure they would be tied to names, the question is if you can edit it from the css and all players can do it simultaneously.

I'm capping it at 56 entrants.

Edit: I have 43 total right now.
I'm in.

Also, Why is
Jigglypuff
on the tournament roster. If it is because they can be female, we should get Charizard & Greninja on there as well (all of Pikachu's current alts are male & Lucario is mentioned to be a male by Mei Ling in their Codec).

Taro?

In Japanese that's たろ

The character for 'ro' has a neck that looks just like Ridley. I think this was a clear (but cleverly hidden) hint. Ridley is going to be playable guys.

I'll add you on my 3ds tonight

Alrighty!

I'm in.

Added!

That's because all of Jigglypuffs accessories would be considered female, along with the fact that it has 75% female ratio. Charizard has a higher male ration, and Greninja has an obvious masculine voice. That's my reasoning. :P

Eh. I'm in just in case.

Repping Puffles.

Will add ya!

or a hint towards hamtaro. *cough*
