Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Buying a new IP is different from a fucking sequel.
I'm failing to see why one is okay while the other is not. In both cases an part of the possible audience gets left out. Why? Because a bag of money blocked them from buying it on their platform of choice.

I asked Square Enix for more clarification and they said "What we’ve announced today is that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox."

That makes it seem like it's NOT a timed exclusive. I asked them to clear this up and haven't heard back yet. Sure wish these companies would treat their fans with respect and talk like human beings instead of machines.

the fact that they stick so closely to "Holiday 2015" is pretty much a dead giveaway that its timed and that they're legally obligated to hide that fact

That just sounds like more jumbled PR speak.

They funded Titanfall and kept EA from canceling the game after Respawn kept going over budget and having poor management.

It doesn't fuck anyone else over. You make it sound like you have some condition or disease that absolutely prevents you from purchasing and enjoy an Xbox One.

Regardless of a consumer having an Xbox One or not, everyone has equal opportunity to play and purchase The Rise of the Tomb Raider. All you do is walk into a store and give money to a company.

Already own an Xbox One? Great. You're "rewarded" for your $500 purchase by being able to play a new exclusive.

Don't own an Xbox One? That's fine. Do you want to play this game? Buy a Xbox One then. If you don't find this game worth playing, don't buy an Xbox One and continue playing your platform of preference.

There's absolutely nothing stopping you right now from playing this game other than your unwillingness to purchase an Xbox One. And that's fine. If you don't want an Xbox One, that's fine. You limit the amount of games you can play though, and I don't think it's reasonable to go around and say statements like "I hope this game bombs and cripples the franchise!"

Nothing is stopping anyone from playing this game but a person's unwillingness to buy a stupid Xbox One.

Yes, the condition of valuing my money.

All it proves to me is that the Xbox division has nothing coming down the pipe for almost a whole year, other than more Halo, which I will be fine without as Destiny is coming out.

Hellblade was specifically stated in today's conference as a timed exclusive (as in not being kept off Xbox forever.)

Bloodborne is owned by Sony, and is being publish by SONY. If Bloodborne was actually Dark Souls 3, and not being published by Sony you might have a point.

Sunset Overdrive is being published by MS, hence funded by MS, no one feels like that game was taken away.

Titanfall was moneyhatted away from timed to full exclusivity, but signs point to MS funding the game so again not the same thing.

I'll ask again, show me a 3rd party series that has a history of releasing on both platforms (Sony/MS) that Sony has paid to keep away from Xbox only fans?

Might want to read this -

As for you question, I agree that Sony hasn't been involved in such kind of activity.

They really are treating the fans like shit right now. Just be clear as hell with what is going on.

You're talking about a established franchise with established fans VS a new new IP with very little fans.

One is a seedy bribe while the other is a supporting gift silly.

This could be a brilliant move by SE. By letting MS pay them to keep it off PS4 temporarily, they're able to use that to their advantage as an outside force that causes them not to have to compete with Uncharted 4. When they finally come to PS4, they won't have to compete directly with Uncharted 4 release and they can point to MS as the reason. It's also a win for Sony and Naughty Dog as they have zero competition in the genre when Uncharted 4 comes out.

Isn't blood borne pretty much the sequel to demon souls/dark souls? There have to be some Xbox owners who played dark souls who aren't happy about this either.

Nope no relation to Demon's or Dark's. They went out of their way to point this out. It is an entirely new franchise.

This seems like such a colossal mistake. This move looks incredibly short sighted. Reboot a franchise, complain about lack of sales, and then release the next game exclusively for the console that's getting outsold 2:1. Short term money grab. Crystal dynamics is now going to be under an enourmous pressure, and on top of that directly competing against the naughty dog a team. This move by Microsoft really makes me question whether or not they have something other than forza, halo, gears, and fable next year. This game is scheduled for fall 2015 right? If so good luck SE and crystal dynamics. They are going to need all the luck they can get for the onslaught of games in 2015.

why would they buy 2 week exclusivity that makes no sense

2016 at the earliest

Because now MS can harp on about an "exclusive" until the end of next year. Anyone who would buy a system for the game, will by that point. Anyone on the fence will see that as another game on their list and might pull the trigger on a purchase.

For all we know MS could be paying for the privilege of it looking like an exclusive game for the next 16 months.

one thing I'd say MS have done wrong here....they should have let a PC version come out...could have pushed Direct X 12.

Indeed, i don't know why you all blame microsoft for lack of new IP and exclusives, so far Xbox One has Dead Rising 3, Killer Instict, Ryse, Forza 5, Titanfall, and will have Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive, Scalebound, Crackdown 3 and now Tomb Raider.
Sony instead has just Killzone, Knack and Infamous on PS4 right now, with The Order, Driveclub and Bloodborn to come.

I find this post funny, and not just for the non-exclusives. Maybe your avatar gave away your bias.

Kind of a baffling decision since this is isn't much of a system seller and will likely be going up against Uncharted 4 in 2015.
What I don't get is SE seem fine with setting up Rise to get flattened by Uncharted which is bad for the TR brand IMO (assuming in correct in expecting Uncharted to easily outperform it).

That thinking is based on the following.

Uncharted 2 & 3 posted similar numbers to TR so far as I'm aware on 1 platform vs 5 showing a stronger concentration of demand on a single platform.

Now SE have removed 3 of those platforms (I'm assuming it'll be 360/XB1 BTW otherwise it's even worse for Rise) from the potential sales base. And the 2 Playstation platforms dropped are where it sold most apparently.

Current trends indicate PS4 install base will be way ahead of XB1 by holiday 2015 and Uncharted 4 will be coming off the huge goodwill for TLOU setting up Uncharted (if it's a good game) to easily match 2 or 3 if not outperform them.

So it seems likely that, bar some huge trend change coming out of nowhere, Uncharted 4 is going to handily outperform TR Rise making TR look like the weaker and less desirable game.

Unless SE and CD desperately needed the deal they've just set the franchise up to take an early knock in its new guise so far as I can see.

Mind you if TR 2013 did cost anywhere close to $100 M they do need help as ND delivered larger and more varied games with Uncharted 2 & 3 for a lot less each - MS seemed able to help Remedy get Alan Wake out the door so perhaps there's that.

Still more than likey they're going to hurt the brand with this deal though judging by the current backlash exploding in their forums.

The best part is that this move is going to end up selling less xbox ones. They have now pissed off a major chunk of the TR community who will likely never buy something they may have considered before. The apology pretty much tells me that they know this already, but S-E already took the cash.

Money well spent.

I'm going with "timed exclusive, PR chatting shit to pull wool over the eyes of their fans because they don't respect their money" angle.

Why is it so hard for them to say.

"It's a Timed Exclusive" or "Exclusive to Xbox One only"

Business: Treating customers like idiots 24/7

This whole thing is ridiculous, just come fucking clear and say if it's exclusive or timed. The best part of Gamescom was that Sony guy specifying which games were Playstation exclusive and which ones were "first on console".

It's in their interest to create confusion and let people think that this is permanent. Of course CD/Square won't be able to confirm or deny anything. They'll just repeat "we have announced that we're releasing the game holiday 2015 exclusively on Xbox One", which clearly is PR wording for a timed exclusive.
The only fact that they're announcing such a deal right now in August 2014 when this could have comfortably been a E3 2015 announcement and the game might not even hit the intended release date if delays happen (and they happened with the TR2013 reboot), should ring a bell about how Microsoft desperately needs to give people reasons to consider the Xbox One right now.
Still if they have a 6 months exclusive like a few people here have hinted at, it makes more sense for CD/SquareEnix.They get a lot of money and exposure from Microsoft, they get positioned like the Xbox premiere alternative to Uncharted 4 and then the game is released on PS4/PC anyway in spring 2016.

Is everyone stupid?

NEW IP != SEQUEL TO MULTIPLAT GAME

Jesus fuck people. They are different beasts.

I think this is one of the major points of disagreement.

I just don't feel this way.

I wasn't outraged when, it seemed, RE was moving from a Playstation exclusive to a Gamecube exclusive.

I wasn't sad when Soul Blade's sequel ended up as a Dreamcast exclusive.

I wasn't outranged when Final Fantasy moved from a Nintendo franchise to a Playstation franchise.

Granted I've always been platform agnostic and lucky enough to own most of the consoles per generation, but I can honestly say I have never felt disrespected as a consumer of a franchise for fact that a future entry was not available where it once was.

Because they aren't robbing me of anything. All the games I loved, I could still play. I had given them my money, and received a game in return. It wasn't as if I paid them up front for the next 10 games in a franchise and they better damn deliver said franchise on the console brand I owned/preferred.

If I wanted to play these new games, I was faced with the choice to buy a new platform. Which has ALWAYS been the case with exclusive games, be they third party or first party.

Whatever, this just means we will get the definitive edition with all the dlc packaged in sometime around this time next year when no games are out anyway.

With that said I'm surprised they didn't just go and buy call of duty and assassin's Creed as well

The game is coming to other systems. In what form we don't know. But there would be firmer wording if it was a real exclusive and never to be seen on ps4. They'll get a game of he year edition at worst.

Isn't blood borne pretty much the sequel to demon souls/dark souls? There have to be some Xbox owners who played dark souls who aren't happy about this either.

It's a new IP with Sony first party studios helping out with development. Not sure why this is the same at all really.

Nope no relation to Demon's or Dark's. They went out of their way to point this out. It is an entirely new franchise.

Lot of things are going on in this thread. Some are arguing that Bloodborne is a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls which was a PS3 exclusive, and makes sense for Sony buying the IP, and now you say that it has no correlation to those games. Ahhhhhh

It honestly sounds like they'll release it on PC and PS4 under a different name or add a Definitive Edition subtitle.

yup, microsoft and squenix have once again shown that they do not care at all about neither gamers nor fans...

Ugh. I will have an Xbox One but I don't want I buy third party games on the weaker hardware. Xbox One is my first party only system this gen. I'll try my best to wait on this one because I'm too OCD to buy the one with slightly lower res or effects by choice.

I'm failing to see why one is okay while the other is not. In both cases an part of the possible audience gets left out. Why? Because a bag of money blocked them from buying it on their platform of choice.

Because people just invested in the reboot on PC and twice on PS3/4 aren't going to get to play the sequel, it's pretty straight forward why some don't consider them the same, the reboot just started.

And it's not like Bayonetta where the franchise was dead and a sequel was never going to be made in the first place.

Thanks Jason. I can imagine how frustrating it is trying to get a simple question answer and being responded to in non-human speech.

I dont get how everyone gets so pissy when ms doea this. I always see ms get shit here for anything they do even if sony does very similar or the same things.

Because they did it last gen for GTA DLC. It set a precedent. They are the big "evil" corporation that throws its money around buying content instead of developing it from within.

Whatever fits the agenda.

Wasn't Tomb Raider Exclusive to Sega Saturn when it first came out?

If it is exclusive to xbone then I think if I may have to actually pick one up. If its just timed...then the PS4 version will be out later, with a directors cut or some such.
