Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

This could be a brilliant move by SE...

This seems like such a colossal mistake...

Thank you, you replied way more eloquently than I would have.

No, before I gave a guy $60 bucks and he gave me a game. Now for some stupid dumb ass reason, the guy wants me to give some other person $500, before I can give him $60. And to the bolded, how old are you? Do you buy your own consoles?

He once posted how he wasn't able to pick up some local Best Buy bargain because he was only 17 and couldn't drive there. I'm guessing he's about 17 and a quarter.

Aren't people annoyed by this move? Doesn't it further tarnish MS reputation? I'd say the negativity they will receive from this would offset some of the positives of having this game as an exclusive. I didn't enjoy the newest TR very much but I would have been interested in seeing how the sequel improved upon the ideas. Now I'll just have to skip it. MS would do well to invest their buckets of cash in new ideas.

It will tarnish MS representation no more then sony's will be tarnished by having Hellblade,
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Volume times.

This generation really is going to be about the games you want to play. Of course MS and Sony are going to try and get exclusives to entice gamers. Anyone would be foolish to expect otherwise.

Great showing from both sony and ms by the way, its sucks being only able to afford one system this gen.

If PR speak is your measure for whether a company respects you or not, you must feel hated by every single video game company on the planet.

What do you want them to say? The signed a deal with Microsoft. They're making it as clear as they can to you without breaking the contract.

Do you honestly believe they would come out and in any way confirm that 'yes, this game we've entered into a contract with Microsoft regarding is totally coming to every other platform if you wait long enough, so don't bother buying an Xbox One'?

Really?
Nice avatar.

Bungie? Is Destiny coming out day and date with the PS4 version? Is No Man's Sky an established multi platform IP?

Destiny is getting some pretty big "Exclusive" content for PS4... aka money was involved. EVERY hardware company does this. Sony did this during the PS1 days with Tomb Raider just as MS is now, around and around we go it will never end. No one company is more evil than the other.

You still didn't answer my question completely. Why hate for MS when they publish SO or TF?

You have some warped perception I think. I don't think most people care that SO or TF were exclusives. There may have been a small amount of backlash for Sunset Overdrive since they're the same guys that made the Ratchet n Clank games but other than that I really don't understand what you're talking about.

I love my PS4 and hate what MS has done the last year but I'm not mad at MS about any other exclusives(aside from this bombshell). It's great that MS has Forza and Ryse and Killer Instinct and all that stuff. It would be great if Bloodborne or Uncharted or any other exclusive also came to Xbox. I would be surprised, but certainly not angry about it.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this...

Imagine if Batman Arkham Knight (or some other big AAA multiplat game) was announced as exclusive to PS4 for Holiday 2015. That would be some bullshit in a lot of people's opinions (including my own) even though I'm a happy PS4 owner. It'd be slimy and it'd be bullshit and I would not be happy at all about it.

That last example is what's happening with Tomb Raider and I don't like it a bit.

Because people just invested in the reboot on PC and twice on PS3/4 aren't going to get to play the sequel, it's pretty straight forward why some don't consider them the same, the reboot just started.

And it's not like Bayonetta where the franchise was dead and a sequel was never going to be made in the first place.

now that you mention the bolded, I'm really annoyed that I bought that game twice, PS3 and PS4 and then this happens. now I kinda feel like I won't even buy the inevitable PS4 version of the sequel

Hold on let me break down the revenue distribution of a $60 game.

Or fucking not.

If you don't think TR on PS4/PC/maybe PS3 would net that much or more.... lol

The problem with your reply there is the fact that you mentioned 3 million ps4 sales, then said $180M

Now it is ps3/4 and pc.... hmmmm

I own an Xbox One, I liked Tomb Raider 2013, but I wont be buying this as long as it is Xbox One exclusive.

Mostly because I want to play it on PC, not on console, but partly because this is just a shitty practice I'd rather not support.

Getting exclusives to sell your product is a shitty practice ?

All this is really going to do is hurt the Tomb Raider franchise until the game is released on Pc and PS4 where the bigger audience is.

If there's one thing I enjoy, it's console wars. Stop being such whiny manchildren about this stuff and enjoy the games. I seriously don't understand brand loyalty.

Well, it's not necessarily about brand loyalty. In my case, I got the original's definitive edition on PS4, worked hard at the trophies, etc. It's surely an OCD-driven complaint, but I would have liked to have had the sequel on PS4 for that very reason; consistency. It's very jarring to me to not have franchise installments on the same platform or same family of platforms. That's my only real qualm with it, as I have no system bias and have both the white PS4 and white Xbox One on preorder. The original was a multiplatform game and I think it's only reasonable for people to be upset that the follow up isn't.

Nothing is stopping anyone from playing this game but a person's unwillingness to buy a stupid Xbox One.

I wouldn't call $400 an easy solution for anything considering it was announced for all platforms just a few months earlier. C'mon man, it's very simple to see why some would be so upset at this.

Because it is probably written into the contract they signed that they cannot say a definitive YES or NO.

Especially after two of their games announced as full exclusives just got announced for PC, lol.

It's Bayonetta 2 all over again...

I doubt people care as much though.

The comparison doesn't really work: What, they were never going to make another Tomb Raider and just let one of their bigger IPs sit quietly? LOL

Yep, it is my least favorite thing about covering the video game industry.

What if a high profile site (like say... Kotaku) just started reporting this as a timed exclusive in all their articles about the game. I'm sure it would attract Microsoft's attention if this wasn't actually the case.

:D

"Tomb Raider" didn't resemble a TR game to begin with, so I'm not sad that I'll be missing out on another overproduced, homogenized, cinematic B-movie imitation.

What? I said it is probably written into the contract SE signed for the XBO exclusivity that they are not allowed to clarify this with a YES it is a timed exclusive or NO it is not coming to other platforms ever.

Then this is simply Square at best. Then again, I'm still not seeing what stopping them from a Yes or No anyways. I wonder if they was waiting to see the reaction before they clarify this. I feel they will try to skirt around the confusion.

Regardless of how much $ Microsoft threw at them I feel the chances of this not being a timed exclusive are vanishingly small, as SE/CD just dumping their two most reliable fanbases for the series is too dumb to believe.

If it isn't then them being willing to moneyhat to that degree is probably a sign the series is doubling down in going in a direction I don't care for, so whatever.

When Titanfall was announced as an Xbox One exclusive wasn't it announced as an exclusive forever. But for this they're only saying Holiday 2015. Interesting.

No, at first it was announced i a similar way than TR today and it was roumored its only timed. In the end it actually was timed, but (i guess) MS saw their consolesales threatened by this roumor and they moneyhatted EA to kill the PS-Versions.

Very interesting move by Microsoft. This is a game I might pick up later down the line if/when it comes to PlayStation platforms. I still have yet to play the first game since I'm waiting to get a PS4 for the definitive edition.

How can anyone with basic reading skills say bloodborne and this are in any way similar?

I don't get it either I always thought bloodborne was sony coming to from software and asking them if they wanted to collab together again. I mean the biggest regret that one of the big names of sony had last gen was letting demon souls go why wouldn't that be the case? it's not like from started developing bloodborne a little after dark souls 2 and then sony came up and gave em a big check so it wouldn't release on any other platform.

They're thinking "gee, this huge bag of money Microsoft just gave us is pretty neat".

Tomb Raider wound selling quite a bit more than 3.6M and was recently called a success by Square-Enix, so that's semi-outdated info.

Yeah they considered it a success around the time TR:DE version rolled out, but that doesn't take away that, they thought 3.4m sales was dissapointing. When I can bet your ass any other developer would have been ecstatic with those sales.

How can anyone with basic reading skills say bloodborne and this are in any way similar?
It's typically what happens with these arguments, people look for a visible example that can show the other side are being hypocrites, but pick a really shitty example. And while that is possible I do feel a lot of factors make this look like the most insane and legitimately frustrating exclusive yet, Titanfall follows it due to the early promises of being timed, but that was still a new IP from a new studio with limited funds. Most everything else was either a new IP or maybe a dead one revived (only Killer Instinct comes to mind, but owning Rare meant that'd be Microsoft's anyway) not what was seemingly a reasonably healthy active IP arbitrarily going exclusive to a platform it didn't sell as well on even when it was ahead.
Well, it's not necessarily about brand loyalty. Well, and it's not exactly trivial to go buying other consoles. Granted if this hits 360 there's always that cheapass option, but that's going to be problematic for other reasons and it's not THAT "cheapass" of an option. Part of why people get worked up over exclusives undoubtedly IS because there's a nice looking game held hostage behind a multi-hundred dollar wall, and it can feel worse if it's less a game that couldn't have existed otherwise but instead is something that not only probably would've hit everything in the same state anyway but DID BETTER on those other platforms. If anything it ends up feeling like gamers get caught in the crossfire between these two companies.

Then this is simply Square at best. Then again, I'm still not seeing what stopping them from a Yes or No anyways. I wonder if they was waiting to see the reaction before they clarify this. I feel they will try to skirt around the confusion.

If they are legally bound not to give an answer, then that is keeping them from saying YES or NO.

I'm glad the industry is moving away from exclusives in a major way. They aren't good for anyone except console manufacturers desperate to coerce gamers into buying their console. They certainly are anti-gamer.

This is sad news about TR2, and I think it is a move that will hurt the game in the long run. I enjoy the franchise and I've really liked the Crystal Dynamics games, but I have no interest in buying an XBone for this. I'll wait for a PC release or I just won't play it . Hope SE was payed a fortune by MS for this, because like EA found out with Titanfall it's only going to hurt game sales and, even worse, create bad blood with gamers.

Sony didn't seem to have a problem saying it with their games today.

No, at first it was announced i a similar way than TR today and it was roumored its only timed. In the end it actually was timed, but (i guess) MS saw their consolesales threatened by this roumor and they moneyhatted EA to kill the PS-Versions.

TitanFall's development was troubled, and Microsoft stepped in and helped to fund its development. I would say, in that case, Microsoft had the clout (and I don't think anyone could blame them) for making the first game totally exclusive to Xbox consoles. Companies don't just willingly help fund products that will be available for competitors as well -- and there seemed to be a good chance that, without Microsoft stepping in, TitanFall itself may not have even existed.

I can't understand the logic behind this deal, if they were actually confident in this game delivering.

I suspect they are just assuming Uncharted 4 will blow them out of the water in Holiday 2014, so they are taking their ball and going home. Not a sign of confidence in the title.

Either that, or they are even less confident in the title, and just want guaranteed money NOW. Which would be even less of a good sign.

Or, S-E doesn't look at SalesAGE at all. Not likely.

...

To me, this seeming lack of confidence as shown by this move is just crazy. Last time around remember, they were so over-confident that the good sales of TR supposedly didn't meet their wildly-inflated expectations. Now, it's like they've lowered the bar of expectations to sub-limbo levels. It's like the folks in charge of the company are going through wild collective mania>depression mood swings. What gives?

I think this move really hurts them. Yeah, Uncharted 4 is going to be a monster, but that doesn't mean you can't still get good sales on the current industry-leading console. Some fans like their TR games too.

Where? (serious question)

That's the kicker it was never announced for anything really. They showed it at the MS press conference at E3 and said Holiday 2015... it was never announced for any platform. GameStop did take reserves on one and ps4 versions though till today.

With a Square-Enix this stupid, I could imagine them making timed exclusive releases for their future Hitman and Deus Ex titles with Microsoft. And if they become even stupider, then I could imagine them making timed exclusives releases for their future Final Fantasy titles with Microsoft.

So is it timed?
Is it not timed?

According to all official statements, it is not timed. I am confused as to the why the thread title was changed to say "Timed Exclusive" when the only info to go off of that says so is a cryptic message from CBOAT and no official info.

Yep, it is my least favorite thing about covering the video game industry.

To be fair, it is found in any other major industry, too. It bewilders me how people try to use language to paint a picture that clearly isn't what the picture is, especially when confronted about it.

If they are legally bound not to give an answer, then that is keeping them from saying YES or NO.

Yes, I get that. As I said, what is so legally bound from them saying yes or no. What is really so legally important to even need to clarify that? Unless square themselves are putting out a PR, then I get it but damn, this is some Obama levels of white house secrecy just to get clarification lol.

Yeah I can get that. I just mean that just because it's a new IP it's not like there aren't people who feel burned by the exclusivity deal either. It's not as direct as the tomb raider sequel, but if you want to play the next demon soul/dark soul esque game made by from software, you have to by blood borne on the ps4

Except that the next Dark Souls game will probably be multiplatform.

Basically, without Sony, odds are there would be no Bloodborne. Its grand sum +1 game.

With Tomb Raider, it was originally multiplatform, and it was paid to stay off of other platforms. Basically, its minus a game for other platforms. People wouldn't have an issue if MS went to SE said "we want an Uncharted/Tomb Raider style exclusive, we'll fund it".

Tomb Raider still gets out to the fans on all systems and those invested in the franchise can continue playing. MS invests money in a new franchise and people can jump on from the first game, and MS has their own nifty IP to do with as they please.

That's basically what happened with Dark Souls and Bloodborne. FROM didn't stop making Dark Souls, and fans of that series can play it on their chosen platform. Square stopped making Tomb Raider for fans of the game, and are forced to purchase a different console than their chosen system to play it, or abandon the franchise entirely.

Its apples to organges.

Destiny is getting some pretty big "Exclusive" content for PS4... aka money was involved. EVERY hardware company does this. Sony did this during the PS1 days with Tomb Raider just as MS is now, around and around we go it will never end. No one company is more evil than the other.

Exclusive multiplayer DLC is different from not getting the game entirely.

Yes, I get that. As I said, what is so legally bound from them saying yes or no. What is really so legally important to even need to clarify that? Unless square themselves are putting out a PR, then I get it but damn, this is some Obama levels of white house secrecy just to get clarification lol.

Sales. What else?

Funny, ROTR is at 60 in the sales rank on Amazon for PS4 which I believe has dropped and will drop more once amazon start cancelling pre-orders, but the X1 version is at 156.
The site that's banned the game has left the most wanted list, it was in the top 20 probably because they just cancelled everyones pre-order due to this announcement.
Madness I tell ya.
