Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Getting exclusives to sell your product is a shitty practice ?

In this way, yes.

If Microsoft want platform differentiation, then they should fund their own new IP or fund games themselves (e.g. Sunset overdrive) by other independent developers. Microsoft and others can do this if they want - but these moves don't give me any confidence in the platform and in fact make me hostile towards it. Maybe I'm not the target for moves like this, but it affects me nonetheless.

I guarantee this game will come to other platforms - all Microsoft and Square Enix have done is inconvenience other gamers. It's business, but it's not one that benefits gamers. Whereas the alternative, developing your own true first party exclusive games, or funding games in a '2nd party' type fashion (e.g. Insomniac, Platinum), does. They're ensuring games that may not have otherwise existed, exist - this scenario, they're ensuring a game that would exist regardless of this exclusivity deal doesn't come to other platforms for a while.

I don't care if it is "business", it's a negative trend.

TitanFall's development was troubled, and Microsoft stepped in and helped to fund its development. I would say, in that case, Microsoft had the clout (and I don't think anyone could blame them) for making the first game totally exclusive to Xbox consoles.

If this is the case you are right, but i still believe this is a shiny PR-fairytale to soothe the PS audience :)

The best part is that this move is going to end up selling less xbox ones. They have now pissed off a major chunk of the TR community who will likely never buy something they may have considered before. The apology pretty much tells me that they know this already, but S-E already took the cash.

Money well spent.

bullshit if the game is good people will buy it

tomb raider 2013 was an amazing game and if the trend continues people will get an xbox to play it. or wait 6 months or a year.

the people who yell the loudest are in the minority

I own an Xbox One, I liked Tomb Raider 2013, but I wont be buying this as long as it is Xbox One exclusive.

Mostly because I want to play it on PC, not on console, but partly because this is just a shitty practice I'd rather not support.

That's not fair to MS/SE. ROTTR is an Xbox One game at the moment meaning that it is the only way to play it. If you have the system and liked the previous title, why would you just refuse to play it? There are plenty of console exclusives that people want to play on PC instead of consoles, but you don't see them straight up boycotting a game that's exclusively available on a system they own.

This notion that a new Tomb Raider won't sell due to a relatively small install base, or will fail to noticeably move systems, or that S-E or CD will feel the wrath of spurned gamers and be held responsible and crucified, is beyond ridiculous, like much of this thread.

It's still one of the most famed IPs in gaming. It may have faded since its heyday, and whether MS considers it worth whatever they spent for the privilege to host it is on them, but the immense iconography Tomb Raider boasts is absolutely going to count for something, even if it only amounts to a purchase incentive on Bone's part.

Meanwhile, we have a Bloodborne thread with people un-ironically saying that a new IP (fantastic as it looks) is going to help shift millions of consoles.

There are fewer flights of fancy more fanciful than the passions of zealous console warriors. This is exactly the kind of thing MS needs to do to catch up, and you can expect more of it until they do.

Will you be buying Destiny? COD? AC? Batman? etc. because all those games have exclusive shit for different console. This is pretty much the same thing but on next level, instead of SOME exclusive content the whole thing is exclusive for time being.

So its either you stop supporting all of those games I mentioned above then heads off to you and you have earned my respect and have all the rights to be upset about because all those games follow shitty practice as well Or if you do buy those games then please stop with this doubt standard.

Bungie has been in Xbox family for more than a decade and then suddenly they jumped shipped. I didn't see people losing their shit over that. Well some people did but it was nothing like this. And honestly I understand some people are frustrated about the announcement because they were genuinely waiting for this game. But please look at the bigger picture, this isn't anything new. Its things that we have been seeing for a long time but on next level lol

Exclusive multiplayer DLC is different from not getting the game entirely.

Even when said content is locked out from others for up to 1 year? Yes there is a small difference, but both practices are crap.

Also love how you ignore the fact Sony has done this in the past, that's ok you don't have to believe it.

Yes, I get that. As I said, what is so legally bound from them saying yes or no. What is really so legally important to even need to clarify that? Unless square themselves are putting out a PR, then I get it but damn, this is some Obama levels of white house secrecy just to get clarification lol.

Because if they say "its a timed exclusive" then its basically the gaming equivalent of a lame duck. Everyone who was thinking about purchasing another system for it, is going to sit out and wait, and all that money that MS paid is more or less wasted. The ambiguity is basically what MS paid for, since they can create the illusion that its a locked-down exclusive without having to actually be one.

Well, I'm just going to wait for the definitive version on the PS4.

Until there, I realy hope this game gets poor sales, so SE will understand the terrible mistake they did.

And some people just want to watch the world burn. Frankly I think your attitude is terrible. You want other people-fans of TR2013-to be inconvinenced because you didn't like the game. Assholery at its finest.

Hey, nobody had any problem with a franchise original that I love being destroyed down to its very essence. They should have given it a new name, and everything would have been fine. Instead, they called it Tomb Raider. They threw that shit in our face and showed they had zero regard for fans of the series. Why should I have any regard for them?

In any event, I just wanted to share how happy I was at this news. You don't have to care for my reasons, but I'm glad to have shared them. Huge ass grin on my face.

Getting exclusives to sell your product is a shitty practice ?

No. Denying a platform a game that was announced for it is a shitty practice.

I don't understand. That's what getting an exclusive is, though....?
MS could've easily spent that money on actually improving their barren 1st party dev teams so they could actually get exclusives instead of putting a band-aid to a bigger problem.

If this is the case you are right, but i still believe this is a shiny PR-fairytale to soothe the PS audience :)

I don't think it is simply PR. This information was learned from Geoff Keighley's "Final Hours" series which is some of his best journalist works on gaming development (and some of the best journalistic pieces on games in general, or at least I think so).

As far as this is concerned -- it could be simply business (and if it's that then this is 99% a timed exclusive) or it could be a situation similar to Dead Rising 3 with Capcom. I don't think there's anyway to tell right now, but I somehow don't believe this is going to be a permanent exclusive.

thinking about this SquareEnix might be making a smart choice, Xbox One version would have been weakest line so they have pushed it up as an exclusive to sell more copies. 3 months down the Line they will still get the PS4/PC sales as expected.

On what are you basing that? I was going to buy it and now I wont.

for the millionth time, timed exclusive DLC, while still bad, is not NEARLY as bad as this tomb raider situation

people can be upset about tomb raider but still buy Destiny and not be a hypocrit

So did Eurogamer just make an assumption, based of pre-order sites....or was there a memo to sites/companies from the developer?

Was there a leaflet that had the consoles listed....an ad?

I'm curious now...or is the MS reveal the only thing ever officially shown?

I cannot find a press release from E3 stating what systems this was on, I honestly don't remember it ever being talked about. I think people just auto assumed it was on everything.

I saw this live on the stream and was like 'why on earth is this exclusive to xbone?'

Other than that shock, its a nothing game I don't really care about. Still, good for xbox.

The best part about that xbone conference was the notion of pre orders being an announcement :D

I always said MS will use bribery, moneyhats and marketing to try and win the console war. It would never being on their own merits. They certainly don't have the more powerful hardware nor the studios compared to Sony.

According to all official statements, it is not timed. I am confused as to the why the thread title was changed to say "Timed Exclusive" when the only info to go off of that says so is a cryptic message from CBOAT and no official info.

I think any logical person is comfortable saying that this is timed. That said, the thread title should be changed to something like "The Rise of the Tomb Raider (probably timed) exclusive to Xbox."

So PS4 owners get U4 holiday 2015 and TR probably mid 2016
XB1 owners get TR holiday 2015

Not sure how this gets anyone to buy a XB1. It will probably help U4 sales in holiday 2015 and hurt TR sales in mid 2016 but I'm sure SE won't care after receiving the loot from MS.

As someone with an XB1, PS4, and Wii U, I think it's one thing to take a new IP and market it as an exclusive to 1 platform, like Sunset OD, but when you take an established IP that has been on multiple platforms and then dial it back to a single system, that's pretty shitty. I won't be picking this up on the XB1 new, maybe used down the line, I don't support what they've decided to do here, and they won't get my money for it. I'm not like actively upset about it, gaming has become a business that actively removes gamers from the equation, and MS still sees more value in paying for 3rd party exclusives than building something in-house. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm just bitter from all of my failed attempts to defend Spider-man 3 in off topic GAF

God that movie was so bad. You really have your work cut out.

I'm bummed for fellow gaffers who have to wait for this game, but I'm still excited to play it. This is the reason to buy all the platforms so crap like this just can't ruin your day.

Well I'd imagine Sony wouldn't have put Lara in that gamer's mural if it was exclusive back in May... :p

according to official statements, they haven't said that it's not timed either. all they have said that in holiday 2015 its xbox exclusive

I always said MS will use bribery, moneyhats and marketing to try and win the console war. It would never being on their own merits. They certainly don't have the more powerful hardware nor the studios compared to Sony.

People really don't get why Xbox One is not performing comparably to PS4. It ain't because they needed Tomb Raider :P

This will change nothing about the trajectory of both platforms, if that's what you're worried about

I can't understand the logic behind this deal, if they were actually confident in this game delivering.

I suspect they are just assuming Uncharted 4 will blow them out of the water in Holiday 2014, so they are taking their ball and going home. Not a sign of confidence in the title.

Either that, or they are even less confident in the title, and just want guaranteed money NOW. Which would be even less of a good sign.

Or, S-E doesn't look at SalesAGE at all. Not likely.

...

To me, this seeming lack of confidence as shown by this move is just crazy. Last time around remember, they were so over-confident that the good sales of TR supposedly didn't meet their wildly-inflated expectations. Now, it's like they've lowered the bar of expectations to sub-limbo levels. It's like the folks in charge of the company are going through wild collective mania>depression mood swings. What gives?

Me neither, I predict a huge backlash on two areas, one we are experiencing as of right now: the sentiment of the none Xbone owners fanbase, which will add fuel to the already tarnished MS image in the medium, and financially: TR is not a system seller, they aren't profiting from software sales either, basically the question is: How is MS getting their money back with this deal?

I asked Square Enix for more clarification and they said "What we’ve announced today is that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox."

That makes it seem like it's NOT a timed exclusive. I asked them to clear this up and haven't heard back yet. Sure wish these companies would treat their fans with respect and talk like human beings instead of machines.

Isn't this more a reason for it being a timed exclusive?
If it were a "full" exclusive, why not just say that it won't ever come out on another platform?
To me it seems like they dodge the question, cause they can't really answer it, cause Ms ofc wants everyone to think that it will never come out on another system.
A simple clarification would end all speculation immediately.
There is no real reason for Ms to pay the big amount of extra money that they would have to pay for a real exclusive as long as people think that it will only ever come out on the One, they succeeded.

I'm glad the industry is moving away from exclusives in a major way. They aren't good for anyone except console manufacturers desperate to coerce gamers into buying their console. They certainly are anti-gamer.

This is sad news about TR2, and I think it is a move that will hurt the game in the long run. I enjoy the franchise and I've really liked the Crystal Dynamics games, but I have no interest in buying an XBone for this. I'll wait for a PC release or I just won't play it . Hope SE was payed a fortune by MS for this, because like EA found out with Titanfall it's only going to hurt game sales and, even worse, create bad blood with gamers.

Ya I believe Microsoft may have been heavily involves with Titanfalls development but regardless, I think thay franchise was hurt in the long term due to its exclusivity. When there's one console thats breaking records, and another one struggling, you definitely want your "hit" to be on the former in order to establish your Ip as a major part of the rest of the generation.

With this its even worse because no one can reasonably make the argument that the next tomb raider would not exist without microsofts involvement.

Yeah, I'm not so sure. You could read that as saying that the statement "Rise of the Tomb Raider is coming Holiday 2015" is exclusively true for the Xbox. I don't see why they'd insist on always mentioning the date in their statements if they weren't trying as desperately as possible to construct a statement that seems to definitively state that it is not a timed exclusive, while still technically allowing for a reading that indicates the truth (that it is, in fact, a timed exclusive).

Remarkably shady, regardless.

Xbox will get more than just TR for holiday 2015 (crackdown and halo probably also).. Tomb Raider is just extra toppings to help sway some people to buy the system.

Fair? Why would I care what is fair? They don't seem to care about fairness for people who have bought their previous games on their platforms only for it to be denied now.

I don't like the practice so I'm not going to play into this practice by doing exactly what they want me to. I'll wait until it comes to other platforms, if it doesn't - then it's no great loss. I'm not boycotting the game, I'll play it if it comes to the platform I want to play it on.

Sorry, exclusive DLC I was never going to buy in the first place is not equivalent of an entire game.

What other people feel and do isn't relevant to me.

So maybe all those No Man's Sky and Project Beast threads are still too fresh in my mind, but am I to take it that console exclusivity is apparently now a "good" thing, for want of a better term?

I can't really keep up.

There are fewer flights of fancy more fanciful than the passions of zealous console warriors.

A post like this from someone who was posting some truly embarassing rants about The Last of Us (And people who like it specifically... "Not real gamerz!") to rile up other users a month ago is incredibly rich.

Keep it in your pants, chief.

HAHAHAHA damn! well i'm getting both consoles this year so it doesn't really matter. lol microsft and sony taking shots at various communities and i'm standing here unfazed lmao
