Which is why I can't quite get my head around why MS would fund this as an exclusive, unless it's just a timed exclusive. I really don't think of TR as a killer app or system seller like it was back on the PS1, even though the last game was decent enough.
SE once again proving that they are truly the stupidest publisher in our industry.
Complain about TR selling 3 million +
Release TR Definitive with PS4 version outselling the XB1 version 2:1
Knows thats the PS4 has twice the fan base of XB1
Conclusion: we should take MS's money hat and make TR a timed exclusive for XB1.
SMH. Personally I don't care about the recent TR but wow the fan base is pissed. This game is going to flop especially with expectations SE has had.
Yet again MS would rather buy exclusivity than to beef up their internal studios. Assuming this deal cost MS at least $100 million, that's 3-5 potentially high profile first party games they decided not to fund.
All the discussions about exclusitiviity and graphics aside, maybe a positive note is that MS money will help CD make a better TR game.
Your precious OG (really?) Tomb Raider would kill the franchise more than the reboot has. Horrible trial and error gameplay and controls would be outdated, sexist big-triangle-breasted Lara's titillation (pun intended) similarly. It rode the wave of new 3D games at the time and was on PC, but Mario 64 was way better.
I don't know why people act this way. It's the same way in the RE threads. If the franchise has moved on and found a new audience then it doesn't owe anyone having to fail and die in some sort of repentance.
No it wasn't. Even if it ever was, it certainly hasn't been since Legend came out.
Unless SE are going by the logic of let's take MS money and XBOne sales. PS4 and PC fans will still buy the game when it's released later. If you look at it this way it's kind of a win, win for them.
More funding means a better and longer game, I don't know. How so? MS Presents: Tomb Raider, now with actual tombs!
And remember that thread a few days ago, "What would make me buy a XBox One?"
Never thought the answer would be Tomb Raider, LoL!
Although i agree with you on buying games being cheesy, i don´t think a first party game only costs $20-33 million.
More funding means a better and longer game, I don't know.
Awesome news. Thus thread is the best (worst) of Sony-GAF, haha.
Uncharted 1 and 2's budget were only $20 million each.
If Sony wanted to cough up the money, I'm sure they could have paid Destiny for a timed exclusive as well.
I'm not in communication with cboat, just to clarify...
If it is indeed permanent it's just another example of the videogame industry finding a way to self destruct in it's stubborn search for short term profit. If it does turn out to be permanently exclusive, I won't be buying the Temple of Osiris either.This...is some fucking weird shit. Timed exclusive or permanent, MS paying for this seems a bit odd, even if it is an attempt to counter Uncharted 4.
If the new Silent Hill is PS4 exclusive are we not mad at MS now?
You know what game wasn't announced as an exclusive? Rise of the Tomb Raider.
Silent Hill, Bloodbourne, and Wild. Not a bad group of AAA exclusives (by third parties) to offset Lara.If the new Silent Hill is PS4 exclusive are we not mad at MS now?
Does that change anything? They can still back out of the agreement. They have more than a year to change their mind.

Pretty much, while this is definitely disappointing it's not as if there won't be plenty of alternative games to play on PS4/PC which'll probably be just as good.Pretty simple, I'll take that extra $60 and buy a different game. There are so many good games that I can't get caught up on this one game not appearing on a system I own... As far as I'm concerned, their loss.
So...I'm a little late to the party, but all I can get out of this news is pretty much on par with Nirolak here. Just doesn't seem reasonable to me at all. So I'm not really upset, as I still haven't played Tomb Raider on PS4 (got bored with it on PS3, felt like a weaker UC game with "different" ideas) so I guess this news doesn't affect my purchasing decisions, but any updates on whether this is officially timed or not. I think that would relax many fans spewing salt and venom and Crystal dynamics right now.I am in fact proposing that Square Enix signed an awful deal for themselves given that exclusivity deals on that scale would basically be unheard of unless they're just financing the entire development budget and marketing cost, but they'd be the publisher at that point.
This logic only works when you're not already a gigantic title. Like similarly it would make no sense to make Call of Duty or Far Cry or GTA exclusive to a particular console.
Maybe. I shouldn't use the word "stupid" when I have no idea what the deal even is. It may have been a very smart deal. I don't know. I'm just mad about it and I hope SE regrets it. I'll be a lost sale because of it and that's all I can really do besides keep parroting the fact that I don't like the whole deal. Why? They will highly likely make much more money out of the game that way (on a present-value adjusted basis). As a shareholder, that's all I would care about.
Man seeing the shit these guys are getting on facebook and twitter... going on a limb here that they didn't expect this much of a backlash from Sony fans. Kinda dumb on their part if they didn't, but this entire thing seems kinda dumb so.
When was this changed to a timed exclusive? I thought it was announced as exclusive to xbox in 2015
There were plenty of ways to modernize the formula without destroying everything that made it appealing. That said, the old games had great gameplay focused around deliberate controls which, while they had a learning curve, did not inhibit in any way the superiority of the titles level design, puzzle design and exploration. The new TR is a pale shadow of what the original was.
By the way, "OG" just means original.
They could have chose to give it a different name and put it out, and nobody would have cared. Would have been the same as a 1000 other games released last gen. in TR OG, we lost a series that has no other peers in the industry and which no other game plays like it.
I act that way because I love what Tomb Raider actually is. RE fans act that way for the same reason. And I'm not against modernization whatsoever. It's just that what replaces it has to be better that what came before, or at least equally good in a different fashion. Instead, we got an insult to gamers everywhere. No challenge, no platforming skill required, laughably easy puzzles, no exploration worthy of any merit.
Anyway, we're just going in circles. Everyone will act how they want. I shared how I feel, and I'm super happy right now![]()

No one fucking knows, that's the thing. Microsoft is using jumbled PR speak instead of saying outright.
It could be taken as it's coming out holiday 2015 but it could be that it's just exclusive at that time. Either way there's a really good chance of it coming to PC. Microsoft has been really good about allowing their exclusives to go the PC route latelyThink about what they said...then think about the definition of time.

I have faith that Squeenix has it in them to insult their remaining audience somehow.
