Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I do understand MS paying SE money for this, which is obviously to compete with Uncharted 4.

All the discussions about exclusitiviity and graphics aside, maybe a positive note is that MS money will help CD make a better TR game since SE is bleeding money already!

This...is some fucking weird shit. Timed exclusive or permanent, MS paying for this seems a bit odd, even if it is an attempt to counter Uncharted 4.

Which is why I can't quite get my head around why MS would fund this as an exclusive, unless it's just a timed exclusive. I really don't think of TR as a killer app or system seller like it was back on the PS1, even though the last game was decent enough.

Because it gets a strong yank as far as exclusives go. Grabbing a game that's predecessor sold 2:1 on a competing system is a good move. Better option than many other franchises.

SE once again proving that they are truly the stupidest publisher in our industry.

Complain about TR selling 3 million +
Release TR Definitive with PS4 version outselling the XB1 version 2:1
Knows thats the PS4 has twice the fan base of XB1

Conclusion: we should take MS's money hat and make TR a timed exclusive for XB1.

SMH. Personally I don't care about the recent TR but wow the fan base is pissed. This game is going to flop especially with expectations SE has had.

Unless SE are going by the logic of let's take MS money and XBOne sales. PS4 and PC fans will still buy the game when it's released later. If you look at it this way it's kind of a win, win for them.

Yet again MS would rather buy exclusivity than to beef up their internal studios. Assuming this deal cost MS at least $100 million, that's 3-5 potentially high profile first party games they decided not to fund.

Although i agree with you on buying games being cheesy, i don´t think a first party game only costs $20-33 million.

Your precious OG (really?) Tomb Raider would kill the franchise more than the reboot has. Horrible trial and error gameplay and controls would be outdated, sexist big-triangle-breasted Lara's titillation (pun intended) similarly. It rode the wave of new 3D games at the time and was on PC, but Mario 64 was way better.

There were plenty of ways to modernize the formula without destroying everything that made it appealing. That said, the old games had great gameplay focused around deliberate controls which, while they had a learning curve, did not inhibit in any way the superiority of the titles level design, puzzle design and exploration. The new TR is a pale shadow of what the original was.

By the way, "OG" just means original.

They could have chose to give it a different name and put it out, and nobody would have cared. Would have been the same as a 1000 other games released last gen. in TR OG, we lost a series that has no other peers in the industry and which no other game plays like it.

I don't know why people act this way. It's the same way in the RE threads. If the franchise has moved on and found a new audience then it doesn't owe anyone having to fail and die in some sort of repentance.

I act that way because I love what Tomb Raider actually is. RE fans act that way for the same reason. And I'm not against modernization whatsoever. It's just that what replaces it has to be better that what came before, or at least equally good in a different fashion. Instead, we got an insult to gamers everywhere. No challenge, no platforming skill required, laughably easy puzzles, no exploration worthy of any merit.

Anyway, we're just going in circles. Everyone will act how they want. I shared how I feel, and I'm super happy right now :)

No salt really, still haven't played the last tr. I love this stuff, really. Makes those destiny maps look a bit silly, not to mention the reaction to evil sony money hatting said maps.

But thats the thing. They won't. They will buy and recommend used sales just to spite. Do u not see the anger in this thread =P

I swear the salt in here is going to harden my arteries. Still early days yet. Calm down and wait to see what happens. 2015 is still a way off yet.

I'm rather saddened to hear this on the point of MS thinking they have to purchase exclusivity to make XB1 appear better than the PS4 for Fall. They obviously think they won't have a suitable competitor against Uncharted when it releases. Thought they wouldn't mind Uncharted since it'll probably go against Halo (which might just be bigger, I dunno) around the same time frame, but they obviously want to be sure rather than sorry.

Although aside from that I'm not really upset. This might just be a good deal for SE. I mean, if they sold millions of units for the last game and they still didn't classify it as a hit, then maybe this will allow for some more leeway. Don't know if it means more funding to make a better game, but if by the end of the exclusivity perios, The Rise of Tomb Raider is not a success, then they really are stupid at making business.

I think its just bad long term business for SE. TR 2 had the potential to do really great saleswise, but with this move there is no way this game can blow up in sales. Most wont buy a xbox one to play this and most wont pay full prize for it when the PS4/PC version finally hit.

I personally will just go to youtube watch a walkthrough and if its great i will buy it someday when i see it for 10 bucks on amazon - if at all.

This...is some fucking weird shit. Timed exclusive or permanent, MS paying for this seems a bit odd, even if it is an attempt to counter Uncharted 4.
If it is indeed permanent it's just another example of the videogame industry finding a way to self destruct in it's stubborn search for short term profit. If it does turn out to be permanently exclusive, I won't be buying the Temple of Osiris either.
At least it isn't Mirror's Edge 2. :P
Although with that being EA, you never know...

Pretty simple, I'll take that extra $60 and buy a different game. There are so many good games that I can't get caught up on this one game not appearing on a system I own... As far as I'm concerned, their loss.

Does that change anything? They can still back out of the agreement. They have more than a year to change their mind.

I would assume there is a penalty for backing out of the agreement now. At least I would add a penalty if I was going to have SE sign something.

Man seeing the shit these guys are getting on facebook and twitter... going on a limb here that they didn't expect this much of a backlash from Sony fans. Kinda dumb on their part if they didn't, but this entire thing seems kinda dumb so.

Pretty much, while this is definitely disappointing it's not as if there won't be plenty of alternative games to play on PS4/PC which'll probably be just as good.

I am in fact proposing that Square Enix signed an awful deal for themselves given that exclusivity deals on that scale would basically be unheard of unless they're just financing the entire development budget and marketing cost, but they'd be the publisher at that point.

This logic only works when you're not already a gigantic title. Like similarly it would make no sense to make Call of Duty or Far Cry or GTA exclusive to a particular console.
So...I'm a little late to the party, but all I can get out of this news is pretty much on par with Nirolak here. Just doesn't seem reasonable to me at all. So I'm not really upset, as I still haven't played Tomb Raider on PS4 (got bored with it on PS3, felt like a weaker UC game with "different" ideas) so I guess this news doesn't affect my purchasing decisions, but any updates on whether this is officially timed or not. I think that would relax many fans spewing salt and venom and Crystal dynamics right now.

Would announcing time exclusivity hurt MS in anyway? Wouldn't people wait for the game to release on there platform of choice regardless? Don't see why the secrecy and wordplay has to be used here.

Why? They will highly likely make much more money out of the game that way (on a present-value adjusted basis). As a shareholder, that's all I would care about.
Maybe. I shouldn't use the word "stupid" when I have no idea what the deal even is. It may have been a very smart deal. I don't know. I'm just mad about it and I hope SE regrets it. I'll be a lost sale because of it and that's all I can really do besides keep parroting the fact that I don't like the whole deal.

I can see where Sony fans are coming from. Tomb Raider has been a prominent title
on PS consoles for nearly 2 decades. Now it's a timed exclusive on XB1 lol

I would really like to add more to this but Hideo Del Reedus just took all the air out of my lungs so I will simply give you a thumbs up and say I agree.

I agree. *thumbs up*

You love what Tomb Raider was. Tomb Raider is what Tomb Raider is today, and it could at any time dig back to what it has been. There is no circle, just a wall of denial and a wish for failure. I don't blame fans for not liking what it is, but those kinds of wishes are just ugly, really.

No one fucking knows, that's the thing. Microsoft is using jumbled PR speak instead of saying outright.

Ah ok, I was just confused by thread titled stating it was timed. I own both the xbox one and ps4 so I'll definitely be getting it. Kind of odd that they would pass up on the profit they'd make releasing it multiplat though

Think about what they said...then think about the definition of time.
It could be taken as it's coming out holiday 2015 but it could be that it's just exclusive at that time. Either way there's a really good chance of it coming to PC. Microsoft has been really good about allowing their exclusives to go the PC route lately

There were plenty of ways to modernize the formula without destroying everything that made it appealing. ...
Tomb Raider 2013 managed to disappoint old school fans of the series, and this Xbox exclusivity pisses off their new Playstation and PC fans.

I have faith that Squenix has it in them to insult their remaining audience somehow.

They won't. Releasing games late after long periods of time will result in loss of sales. Maybe if the window of exclusivity is small in which case MS looses.

Man seeing the shit these guys are getting on facebook and twitter... going on a limb here that they didn't expect this much of a backlash from Sony fans. Kinda dumb on their part if they didn't, but this entire thing seems kinda dumb so.

It's because the decision was made by the Japanese branch, I'm sure S-E Europe and Eidos know how this franchise is associated with Playstation and PC, but it's not their call. Now they have to deal with a PR nightmare. I kinda feel sad for the developers, people are calling them sell-outs and how they are fucking their fanbase, but the real culprit is S-E Japan.

I am confused, we dont know who paid for what, how much was paid or anything solid.... and why the double standard with sony? they get an exclusive in the ps3 days or now and its great, nobody questions money or the business involved.
Now here is another thing, regardless of what system it was exclusive for, it would LOSE sales.... if it was ps4 exclusive it would lose out on 5-6 million xbox ones out there.
If uncharted was not exclusive it would sell more, if halo was not exclusive it would sell more.
Everyone comments as if they know the business behind this deal, but lets not forget or confuse one thing, both systems have exclusives that i wish were on the other system...nobody are yelling about the lost sales of no mans land or day z?
I def dont know the business behind any exclusive deals, or times exclusives and id bet 99% of you dont either, so why not just enjoy the games you have one whatever system you have instead of the conspiracy theory.... MS isnt apple or google, but if they have loads of cash and could buy sony or any game company they really wanted...that is what id say is crossing the moneyhat line.
