Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

People using Sony's deal with Bungie for an exclusive map and pieces of gear as a counter to this are insane!!

Microsoft is the villain in this because they are essentially paying to deny other platforms the game. They are not publishing it. They are not funding the development. They are just paying for it to be exclusive. It would be like Sony going to Ubisoft and paying them to not put Far Cry 4 on Xbox or PC. Sony would be crucified as well.

Edit: "Crucify" and "villain" are hyperbolic terms. It's late and I'm typing this as I'm going to bed. Give me a break lol

So let me get this straight:
  • SE had astronomical expectations for Tomb Raider
  • Tomb Raider sells really well by any legitimate measure available
  • SE is very disappointed with that
  • In response SE decides to cut out a majority of the potential market for a sequel
  • In order to what exactly?
  • I don't understand

This is most definitely timed and in no way permanent.

If it were they would have proudly said so back in E3.This is probably MS' way to fight Uncharted 4.

Ok, so Bloodborne is being published by Sony. At the end of the day, it's STILL exclusivity. Except in Microsoft's case, they just aren't willing to publish it which, for all we know, is because they don't have the resources or Square Enix didn't want/allow Crystal Dynamics to publish with someone else. The economic principle is the exact same though. Sony is just making a deeper investment with their exclusivity deal.

FFS, 128 pages and yet we still see comparisons with Bloodborne.

icespide described it perfectly
every new page of this thread is becoming a repeating cycle now

- this is ms's bayonetta 2!
- but why is bloodborne exclusivity okay??
- oh but you're fine with Destiny timed exclusive DLC?
- it's the next titanfall
- but why is hellblade exclusivity okay?

The mental gymnastics going on here about Bloodborne is amazing. Also ftfy

Sony is co-developing the game with Studio Japan...

So is it confirmed timed? I am getting mixed messages all over the place.

2 solid insiders have said it and if you read between the lines you can clearly see it is a time exclusive. Hell the whole exclusive for the 2015 holiday season should of enough of a hint to see it is timed.

I tend to think that if they would have taken that money to develop another exclusive game, they probably could have sold more consoles. Tomb Raider + an exclusive game sound better than just Tomb Raider, in my opinion.
I agree but as its been said I guess they wanna compete with U4
I fully expect this to release on PS4 and PC. No worries yall.

Villian lol

If this was true exclusive then 'crucify' away. But you have no proof that it is. Your reaction is sensationalist at best.

Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past - we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special - the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

Thanks,

Darrell Gallagher
Crystal Dynamics Head of Studios

Since it's a timed exclusive, they get a guaranteed amount of $$$ from MS for the deal, plus however much they'll get from Xbox sales. They'll release it for other platforms afterwards, so for SE, it's a win-win situation.

Not good for the industry?

Economics lesson: competition (read: exclusivity) means better products and offerings. Remember when Sony laid the smackdown on Microsoft last summer with the always-online stuff? That forced Microsoft to reverse the policy to stay competitive. Same with the recent Kinect-less price drop.

i am confused as to how you can attribute what Microsoft did as a better product/offering by your strange definition of competition.

Microsoft:
- Instead of investing resources into the development of competitive software/services, paid a company to delay the release of their product on competing platforms.

- In a misleading fashion, informed consumers that said product was exclusive to their platform when it isnt.

How do either of these practices better the video game industry? it sure as shit isn't driving better products or offerings.

I bought the game on the PS3 and loved it I am not pissed at all since I know it will be coming shortly after. Not like I would of bought it day 1 that money is reserved for Uncharted 4. If it was a real exclusive I could understand people being angry.

I guess I would agree with you. I'm not really a big TR guy so it doesn't really affect me. But I can't imagine if Dark Souls 3 was exclusive (even timed) on Xbox that I would be very happy about it. Obviously I am a PS3/4 only gamer and I feel I shouldn't have to buy another system to play a sequel to a game I played on what I already have.

So has there STILL been zero official confirmation as to whether or not Rise of the Tomb Raider is timed?

I keep seeing posts saying it is by a bunch of people as if it's fact.

Update:
Asked to clarify the specific terms of the Rise of the Tomb Raider deal, Spencer wouldn't be budged on the "Holiday 2015" line, despite developer Crystal Dynamics suggesting its game won't be coming to PC and PS4. Neither would the exec comment on the wording, "exclusively on Xbox", which could suggest an Xbox 360 version of the game is also in development.

"We're saying what we said on stage," said Spencer. "In Holiday 2015, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be exclusive to Xbox. That's the comment.

"We had a lot of similar questions around Titanfall and the structure of our deal is a business relationship that's frankly between us and Square Enix. I know Crystal Dynamics has issued a statement and we're going to stand by that. Xbox fans are going to be able to play Tomb Raider next holiday exclusive on Xbox."

Just read this. Yuck.

Yuck yuck yuck.

Have some fucking transparency.

Yea it'll get to them eventually. Just seems like a weird title to buy exclusivity for. I mean, the game sold well, but I can't imagine many people getting pushed over the edge to buy a console because of Tomb Raider. Maybe I'm wrong though.

lmao. it's a carnival of dumb.

Well that depends. If it turns out the game is in fact a TIMED exclusive then the outraged posters seem a little dumb.

If it turns out it's FULL exclusive, then those defending/comparing to other different situations look dumb.

We still don't know 100% yet.

yeah, that is disgusting. i was warming up to spencer, thinking he was leading some tangible reform. alas, he's just the same suit with a different face.

The wording in CD's post: "As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox." sounds like it is not a timed exclusive.

Also, at the conference, they mention working with MS on the game, who says MS Games Studios isn't helping on the development of the game?

We're probably not going to get any solid confirmation on that until after it's released on the Xbox One. It wouldn't be in either Square's or Microsoft's interest to just come out and say "Yeah the game will hit other platforms eventually." But I mean just reading this:

"In Holiday 2015, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be exclusive to Xbox."

Come on. It's obvious lol.

HAHAHAHA! I'm sure they are.

Anyway we know it didn't need MS help.

Personally I think the X1 has a decent slew of upcoming games, maybe this will push those wavering on the fence over.we can be sure to expect some decent games and I wouldnt wanna miss out on any of them.

2 things that really piss me off.

1, SE for being a dumbass to take this deal.

2, their unwillingness for clear messaging.

It is timed exclusive.

We don't have official word yet.

But it definitely appears to be the case. I said so myself much earlier in the thread and in the Xbox conference thread last night.

I personally would prefer to hear it from an official source as opposed to CBOAT. But that's just me.

So was it the combination of bags of money from Microsoft and not willing to compete with Uncharted 4 on the PS4 the reason Square Enix went though with this deal?

Sorry, really late on the news.

Seriously?

It's not his call to announce when the game will be coming out for the other platforms.

Grow up.

Regardless if its obvious that it is timed, fact is they aren't going to announce its timed anytime soon, so we don't have official confirmation and probably wont for a couple of months.

Because they would just come out and say otherwise like when they got Titanfall as a full exclusive.

And MS studios isn't helping with development because it was multiplatform at E3.

It's a timed exclusive for the holiday season. Two months max.

Seeing as an exclusive is a game "denied to other platforms," what you're essentially saying here is it's okay for Sony to invest in exclusives, but not Microsoft.

Yea, but Sony would never do that.

Is it me, or are the vast majority of those exclusive PS4 games Sony made games? Not exactly the same thing.

Not good for the industry?

Economics lesson: competition (read: exclusivity) means better products and offerings.

For pete's sake, argue for exclusives all you want, but can people stop stuffing the word "competition" with any meaning they want?

Exclusivity is a strategy that companies can partake in minimizing or eliminating competition. The strategy in itself, however, does not represent a form of competition nor does it mean better products or offerings will result in anyway. If anything, it can often lead to price discrimination, depending on the retail channels (won't happen in this case, but just look at Blizzard's game prices.) In the case of big business, exclusive dealings can also be a sign of collusion.

Companies may also collude on exclusivity strategies for the purpose of being anti-competitive.

We don't know Sony's deal with NMS, they could be actually funding the game since Hello game are small studio with limited resources.

What I don't understand is how do people know that whatever deal Microsoft has worked out with Square and Crystal Dynamics isn't also helping to cover a significant chunk of this game's development cost? Does everybody remember when Tomb Raider sold as well as it did on the PS3 and 360 and yet Square Enix were somehow still disappointed or not entirely satisfied with the sales? As well as the last game ultimately did (with a tremendously larger combined install base of potential customers), this game may run into a similar, but possibly worse predicament. Just because they're not an up and coming small developer like the team behind No Man's Sky doesn't somehow mean that funding and return on investment aren't every bit as big a concern.

Its amazing what drivil the mind can come up with if you're persistent enough.

Sony made games and all the indies MS gave the finger to pre-release.

Kagari said SE didn't need help to develop the game.

Gaf represents everyone?

We are definitely a representative sample of the target demographic.

So then well, who would be happy about this news?

Casual fans of Xbox were already getting the game, nothing has changed
Only hardcore Hardcore Xbox fans will be happy because of 'console wars'
Everyone who does not own an Xbox One and was expecting it to also come out on PS4/PC? Obviously pissed.

In terms of active enthusiasts
