Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Import Impressions Thread of Doom

Need help on a quest for some reason in Dungeon 2:

Extra quest where you fight Elizabeth on floor 3 of dungeon 2. I have no idea where she is on floor 3, I don't see a marker or anything.

On dungeon 3 now at ~20 hours. Gameplay is good, boss fights are good, dungeon progression is very slow (like EO, not like Megaten; I've progressed through like 7.5 dungeon floors in 20 hours), battles are a bit slow even on very fast for a megaten but not a dealbreaker.

Music is ok, small amount of songs, lots of remixes, but good. Graphics are pretty great. Story is ok, but banter sucks. First megaten-related game in my life where I can't believe I'm skipping all non-plot essential dialogue (aka 96% of the script). The dialogue in this game reminds me of Tales skits except instead of being a 30 second long skit it's 3-5 min long dialogue and not-voiced. Totally zzz. Rei and Zen are the only interesting characters since they have a story and everyone else is just dur her her fanservice with no character development or plot.

As someone whose not a big fan of EO, but is a big megaten fan it's good, but not great. B- ish so far. EO fans will love it and people who love no-story all-fanservice stuff will love it too.

There's a 3 by 3 room in the north of the second or third floor of that dungeon.

Is it just me or does it seem like physical is waaaay better than magic in this game? A lot of bosses, even enemies don't have weakpoints and with physical you don't have to worry about SP and a strong physical attack on a fighter-type character does about 2x the damage of a strong magic attack from a mage-type character. Physical attacks tend to critical and get boosts for the characters. Plus the fighter type tends to have better defense/high HP as well.

I have a pretty even team between physical/magic and my physical attackers are always the one doing way more damage and being far more effective. I'm actually pretty annoyed that the MC you pick has boring even across the board stats. Makes him a completely average-character and he'll never be doing the damage that min-max high atk or high mag characters are doing.

Yeah that's what I've observed too (mid-way through the 3rd dungeon). It doesn't help that there's physical skills that also deal elemental damage. And 真空波 is ridiculously overpowered.

At least Hama and Mudo are still worth casting.

Yeah, I was using mostly elemental attacks in the second half of the game. I don't think there were many elemental aoe attacks, so if you want to attack many enemies with one weakness, magic was better iirc.

I'm on Hard. FOEs and bosses have been really easy so far, if you're able to map out the entire floor you're probably already strong enough to take them on.
 
Really like dungeon 4. The dungeon song is the first track in the game that feels totally SMT. Also love the visual design and puzzles of dungeon 4. Seems like the best dungeon in the game so far by a good margin. Dungeon 3 was ok, maybe a little too gimmicky with FOE puzzles. Dungeon 2 was fun just for the
Catherine fanservice
and Dungeon 1 was forgettable and went on too long for an intro dungeon. Definitely warmed up to the game now and it's made me more interested in the modern EO games with their FOE puzzles.

It's still my least favorite megaten related game in the last bunch of years, but if they had a fast forward button to speed through battle animations it'd be a lot closer! Watching the battles play out after you've chosen commands even on "very fast" is one of the things along with the high encounter rate and large dungeon floors that makes progression feel so slow in this one.

My other minor gripe and why it keeps feeling like "megaten-lite" is the Personas/demons themselves seem pretty nerfed. By taking out "strengths" and "weaknesses" from each, they feel a lot less interesting than other megaten games where their weak points/reflect/absorb were 75% of their usefulness (though tbf some still have a portion of these through skills). They also seem to have fewer skills and fewer base skills transfer when making new persona. Also it seems like traditional 1x1 fusion is really nerfed and you pretty much have to do triple fusion to get a better new persona each time. Otoh, being able to turn them into skill cards and having ridiculous amounts of money keeps the game "safe" and you can pretty much make your perfect team if you get stuck.

So basically at this point now, it's definitely the best EO game I've played and just slightly the worst megaten game I've played :P But it's enough to satisfy my megaten dungeon crawling until P5 hits this winter.
 
I've been playing the game for 30 hours now (dungeon 2 but playing both P4 and P3 sides), so here are some more impressions :

The game feels really "Atlus" : it's obviously no AAA, but it is so well crafted and polished (a la SMT 4) that it does not feel cheap "niche". I also love the music (music for Dungeon 2 floor 2 especially)

I cannot comment on story (my japanese is too bad) but there are a good deal of character interactions. I particulary like how characters express themselves in battles, it's funny and it never gets old imo
Also first time I hear the JP voiceovers. Some characters sounds better in english (Fuuka, Naoto or Rise mostly, they sound so "forced" in japanese) and some are better in jp (Chie, Yukiko-who does not sound like a depressed midlle age woman after all-, Kuma) imo

Progression is really slow but dungeons layout are good, I almost feel it will be difficult to go back to the randomly generated ones from P3/4-there's really a sense of progression and satisfaction. Really wish they could fix that for P5. The adjustable difficulty is neat and I found the combats fast paced enough with this incredible sense of power I only find in the P3/4 games

This game really feels like a Persona game also, I almost forget the EO aspect. The first person view reminds me of P1 for exploration and SMT for combat.

They are almost too many characters to deal with-I think it was mostly a "your favourite character is in here" ! decision, but I mostly stick to P4 or P3 cast to be able to manage my party. Speaking of that, I have a hard time deciding which side (P3 or 4) of the game to stick with, so I tried to play both at the same time, but I think they are too similar to continue like that...

The game is a really satisfaying exeperience as a dungeon crawler and it got me even more hyped for P5.

I haven't died once and I'm 4/5ths through the game. Not sure what they mean by random deaths. That's older smt games. PQ is dumbed down modern megaten like P4 where it's tough to die outside of a boss fight.

I agree with laber-like process though, it's a fun one, but it's slow and can feel like fun work.
 
Spending 3+ hours getting through Dungeon 4 floor 3 has pretty much killed all enjoyment I was having in this game. The jumping FoEs are SO ANNOYING and that combined with trial & error figuring out the pattern of the 4 statues just made the game feel like work and not a fun dungeon crawler.

Really not looking forward to floor 4 now since I'm sure it'll be more of the same. I'll power through it and hopefully dungeon 5 is less annoying.
 
Just finished dungeon 4. I'm having a lot of fun with the game, but the latest revelations in the plot are rather underwhelming.

I got screwed over by the last boss because
I didn't have any revives, so I couldn't deal with his countdown spell. THAT. IS. BULLSHIT.

Actually, the 4 statues puzzle isn't completely trial and error.
When you check the sealed door, it'll tell you the order in which you have to pass the statues. The same kanji is written on their fundoshi.
 
Thanks, yeah. Figured it out. Haven't played in a week or so, but was midway through the last floor in that dungeon last time I played.

Honestly...dungeon 4 just got too complex. It was fun in the first few floors, but the last 2 floors feel like you need a walkthrough just to figure out how make it through the floor to the exit. I wouldn't mind the more complicated dungeon puzzles (in fact I'd appreciate it!) if it wasn't for the random battles every 20 steps that interrupt trying to figure out the puzzles. Even with the decrease encounters items it's just really annoying to have to deal with random encounters during complicated FoE puzzle maps. Especially since the encounters are easy and they're a lot slower than say SMT4. I've started running from every battle because it's faster than watching the fight animations play out on "very fast" and I don't really need the xp at this point.

Gonna power through this and hope fingers crossed I like Dungeon 5 better. Otherwise probably will be pretty disappointed by the game by the time it ends. Then again, I'm a megaten fan, not an EO fan.
 
Sounds like the worries about map complexity not being up to par were unfounded, then :P? Are the battle animations that much slower compared to the 3DS Etryans? I'm not the biggest EO fan either, but the weird experiment they've done with the SP and one more systems sounded fairly interesting.
 
I really liked the puzzley nature of the dungeons, particularly the many ways they used FOEs, and I think it's really the best part of the game, but maybe 4th dungeon can be a bit rough with some annoying FOE's movements :D

Anyway, imo it's better play the game on hard difficulty, normal can be on the easy side.


Regarding the 4 statues puzzle
don't forget to check their fudoshi back in the last floor :D

I think you're going to hate the final 2 floors in the game... On the bright side, you'll eventually unlock an item that reduces the encounter rate to 0.

Yeah, the animations can be pretty slow. Even when you set them to the maximum speed, the game still spends more time than EO to finish a turn. Not to mention all-out attacks still play the full animation.
 
Finished dungeon 4. Boss was kind of cakewalk. So glad to be in a new dungeon! Like the music for dungeon 5, though I really wish the game brought in a second main battle theme by this point. The battle BGM gets kind of old with the length of the game and considering how many BGMs a lot of megaten games have, would've been nice to get a "final dungeon" battle song for battling. These new spider FoEs seem like they're going to be annoying haha.

When do I get the "zero encounters" item? I've 100% all the floors until now and done all the quests except one EXTRA quest in dungeon 4. Used the heck out of the lower encounter rate item and running from battles to get through dungeon 4 floor 4's puzzles which took a while to get through.
 
Few questions for those that understand the game fully...

Before a dungeon, I'm getting asked for a カエレール(off the top of my head) potion, that's asking me if I think I should buy a return potion right?

Turning off the DS erases your map?

What exactly do the Power Spots do?

I'm at the 2nd floor of dungeon one but my map progress was wiped :(

You will need to give
魔除けの銀錫
to Theodore, an item that can be found on the chest that unlock itself when you complete a floor at 100%, on the final dungeon. But I'm not sure which floor it was,
maybe floor 3 ?

When you step on Power Spots you'll get materials to sell at the store, useful to get money and unlock new item and equipments. And everytime you access dungeons the game will remind you to buy a カエレール (if you don't have any), an item that let you escape from dungeons.

Thanks! Finally started using the power spots correctly :P so you need to keep using カエレール potions to unlock Persona fusing stuff right?
 
I've been trying for an hour to get past this F.O.E. on the last dungeon, floor 4 in the bottom right corner:

How do you do this? Like is there something I'm missing about how this F.O.E. works? I can't figure out how to get past him and get to the exit from the midway bottom. Are there any youtube videos of people getting past this guy that I can watch? It's pretty frustrating. I wish there was an item to show F.O.E.s next step.

That's a reaper FOE? If I remember right those pink diamonds on the left are pistons that can either be raised to be obstacles or lowered to be tiles you can walk on. The reaper can't walk through them when they're raised so if you get him to chase you around one you can beat him to the exit. The switches that raise/lower them should be on the previous floor.
 
Is there non dungeon "exploration" or is it just like every other Etrian Odyssey game?

I assume its just pure dungeon crawler, but I am wondering since this is Persona too.

Ah, ok. Thanks. Well there's two that can be raised and one I can't raise (the one on the right because it would block my ability to get through it from the stairs to the exit where I need to go.

Been doing this with the first one lowered though to walk on. Will try with it up and see if I can get a head start past this guy. His movement is walk 2, stop and he won't attack if you move near him on the stop 3rd step, right?

Elizabeth's tips are:

1) Fight them with the same number of people (so since it's 4 enemies = party of 4)
2) Fight them with young men

I do both 1 & 2 and I don't notice any difference at all in the battle. They still wipe my entire party almost in a single turn and heal themselves for 9500HP often. Seems impossible. I'm obviously missing something? When they say "young men" do they mean like children to bring along Amata?

According to some Japanese wikis I'm looking up,
following her tips will reduce the chance of them using Diarahan and メッタ斬り. You also have to be not carrying a flame. You'll know if you have a valid party if the battle opens with the message "おまつり野郎はやる気だ". Apparently Zen, Ken and Kuma don't count as valid choices.
I beat them without following her advice, but I waited until I had cleared most of the final dungeon.
From メルキセデク of the 正義 arcana (level 64) you get a skill card that gives a passive skill which boosts critical hit rate. Bring your hardest physical hitters, get the FOE to near half health, buff the hell out of everyone, cross your fingers and throw everything at them. I HIGHLY recommend bringing Chie if you're going with this method.
 
Thanks, yeah my problem was I was carrying a flame still. Took me a few tries but I ended up beating them. Actually what helped the most was
completing the subquest where you fight Margret using only P3 & P4 lead. The upgrade skills for both leads helped SO MUCH. Randomizer is like the best skill ever in megaten, I remember abusing the hell out of that in SMT3 and here it debuffed the FoE so bad they were missing every attack and hitting for small damage. Then using the P4 lead (since his stats are bad because of being even across the board) as a support unit buffing with heat riser to Kanji (my main physical attacker) helped too.

Anyone have some tips or recommended skills/sub-persona? (ヽ´ω`)

Yes, floor 3 of the first dungeon is possibly the hardest floor in the game the first time you reach it. Only advice I can give is to save often, especially when you reach a new floor. Have you unlocked persona fusion yet? You can get a Chimera at level 10 which teaches 蛇ニラミ, that reduces the chance of enemy initiative when equipped on your navigation character. I never removed that skill.

Thanks for the tip. Ended up inching my way through to the end of the dungeon before I was high level enough to fuse one though. Yukiko finally has media via angel and met up with the P3 characters. Should be smoother sailing for a while ( ´∀｀)b
 
Floor 3 is fkn brutal!! I hate losing map progress after a wipe too. I'm 11 hours in and have fused a few Personas at this point. Sometimes you just get wrecked though!

Banter is really awesome. My favourite part. Also playing in Japanese is doing wonders for my learning. My reading and listening has gotten much better since starting
 
Ok I'm at the final boss, 100% explored all the floors, did all the quests. Trying to build the final best weapons for my team before trying the boss for the first time but there seems to be 1 item from the 3 items needed for the best weapon that I can't find anywhere and it doesn't show up on any of the wikis under ingredients? Am I missing something or do I need DLC or something to get the material needed to make the final weapons?

For example, for the P4 main's final weapon, I'm missing the material "Yoshitsune (in Katakana) no something something" (sorry, on my laptop and can't type in Japanese). For Kanji my main attacker I'm missing the items "Wareta Sekiban", etc... each character is missing 1 material item and that items doesn't show on any material lists on the Japanese wikis like this one:

Are these post-game items? Or DLC items? Or am I missing something?

I didn't get those items, all my party's weapons were with attack under 200, and when I beat the final boss my level was 67, playing on hard difficulty. You just need to be prepared on the items front,
particularly revive items (like 地返しの玉 or 反魂香)
, you will understand it when you will face it :)

Anyway some material are drops when you sacrifice persona, look here:

Ah, that's it. Yoshitsune's item is from lvl.76 Yoshitsune. Don't think I'll bother leveling to 76 just to make him and get the sacrifice item. At least Kanji's missing item is from King who I have, so I can get my main attacker his strongest weapon.
 
I'm stuck on Floor 3 of dungeon 1...in the room with 3 FOEs. Can't figure it out for the life of me. Am I missing something important here?
 
Final boss was kind of a pushover with my team. The final dungeon was really great though. The last two floors were incredibly satisfying to work through. That last 10% felt good :)

Overall, liked the game, didn't love it. Great dungeon crawling outside of the jumping foes in dungeon 4. Boss fights were kind of zzz for a megaton, and only boss 2 was really unique. Normal battle system was solid but not as good as Persona or SMT or devil survivor. Persona/demon fusion was really shallow, so few skills carried over and it was a huge step back from smtiv. Story was eh and skippable, quests were alright, music was ok, graphics nice, but the dozens of hours of quality addictive dungeon crawling made it worth it. Was a good time waster, not really interested in a PQ2 though.
 
The banter is nice but I'm kind of getting tired of the characters being reduced to caricatures of themselves. I feel like Teddie hasn't had a single conversation that didn't involve hitting on the girls since I started playing.

I'm stuck on Floor 3 of dungeon 1...in the room with 3 FOEs. Can't figure it out for the life of me. Am I missing something important here?

If it's the room I'm thinking of, lure either of the two FOEs (underlined) on the sides to paint the rose at the far end of the room by washing the paint away from the opposite side, like this

           [FOE]
[ROSE]    [ROSE]
Then lure the FOE at the top of the room to one of the two roses on either side of you when you entered the room. After that you should be able to pass.

I had expected this, particularly after Arena, but it's still disappointing. How bad is it with the other characters? I hope Naoto's dialogue consists of more than just awkward exchanges with Kanji.

It's like this the whole game and why I skipped a lot of the dialogue after a while. Only Rei/Zen have actual plot/character development and Kanji/Ken have a little too. Everyone else is just there to shout out their trope line.
