Phil Spencer: MS will spend money on marketing and developing Rise of the Tomb Raider

Seems like the same consumers that were too stupid to understand Microsoft's amazing DRM system have crawled out from under their rocks of ignorance and are kamikaze'ing Phil Spencer's clear and unminced message as to the pertinent details of Tomb Raider's exclusivity.

There's no i in obfuscation, but there most definitely is a u.

For shame, gamers.

I know the first part was a joke, but huh?

I don't think insomniac are going to go through the trouble of keeping their own IP rights if they aren't planning to move into multiplatform development.

That isn't the only reason Insomniac has to own an IP, though. Owning an IP also grants the owner creative direction, merchandising rights and the ability to sell their IP if they so choose (see Gears of War). Sure, Sunset Overdrive 2 could be on PS4, but even though Insomniac owns the IP, MS could have first refusal rights for a sequel. In that case, SO2 may not be on PS4. You actually have no clue if it's a lock for PS4, but wrote, "Sunset overdrive 2 is coming to PS4. No question." See the problem here?

Of course, all console manufacturers will only talk what's happening on their own system.

However.

That doesn't explain why Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix's mouth is sealed shut. Usually when a journalist asks the developers themselves we get a clarification of what is exclsuive/timed etc, not this bullshit.

Reminds me of this (at 5:05). Also this (at 0:30).
For being a small studio, they could have easily said on that first video that it would come to the PS4, but instead he used a generic PR statement. Even the GameSpot guy seems to have taken a shot at their secrecy.

I guess this is a contractual thing? Can't talk about future versions of the game on a competing platform?

It's not better for Xbox to lose an exclusive franchise VS losing a game.

Well maybe they should invest more into First party development, because it happened all last generation and will this one too.

Ninja gaiden
Dead rising
Mass effect
Splinter cell
Trials
Serious Sam
Etc etc

I understand that. But I stand by my words.

I have no doubt in my mind that Sunset overdrive will have a sequel on PS4. You argue im wrong if you like, after all its only an opinion. But thats what i think is going to happen.

I'm not mad at all. This stuff is great. As usual, I'm having a big laugh at Microsoft's expense.

People don't seem to realize something...

Why would you be laughing at MS? There's zero confusion for Xbox one owners here. We know we will be playing tomb raider holiday 2015. The only people the vague statements could possibly upset would be Ps4 owners, maybe PC owners. Phil Spencer doesn't care if people that don't own xboxes are salty. This isn't a problem for Microsoft to deal with, it's really an issue with CD and SE.

The more Phil Spencer upsets Ps4 owners the better a job he is doing. That's just the nature of the competition unfortunately. If you are completely anti Xbox but get upset when an exclusive game or content isn't available to you, then I think this is going to be a veeery long generation for you indeed.

What motivation could Microsoft have for being this obtuse if the game isn't actually coming to their competitor's platforms at some point?

I don't understand this upset. Like at all. And why ThatGameCompany or Hello Games are exempt because they are small seems like an outlandish idea to me. Having a big studio comes with many more risks and bureaucracy and paperwork. In fact I think it would be easier to go with a straight forward strategy because of much smaller budgets. But even that can't be stereotyped as every deal, company and game is different.

Not when Tomb Raider an established franchise hits at least 6 million sold. It's not like they're starting a new IP where they have no idea of how much appeal the franchise is going to have.

Yeah its the usual suspects spreading fear uncertainty and doubt all over again. Makes me sick.

They're up to 6.5 million now.

We demand to know the truth. We deserve to know. What were the particulars of the deal? Break down the numbers. Details of that first meeting- was it over lunch? Sushi? Steak? Did anyone cackle maniacally when it was signed?

*sigh* Can someone just explain this in plain English for fuck's sake? Is that too much to ask?

Is it a timed exclusive, a console exclusive or a full exclusive?
Is MS publishing or is SE?

These are not difficult questions to answer and yet every time you have opened your mouths we end up with more questions instead of less.
As it is now nobody is sure if anything because every word out of your mouths is aimed to obfuscate instead of elucidate. THIS IS DOING YOU NO FAVORS! You are just making yourselves look either sleazy or grossly incompetent. Stop the BS and answer the damn questions! FFS

You know what would make all this go away?

If everyone just went out and bought both a PS4 and an Xbox One. Then we'll ALL get to play the game one way or another.

Come on guys, lezbee friends.

Why in the world would I want to support these business practices?

He said MS, not X1 owners. It is a bit entertaining seeing MS mess up over and over. They just don't learn

For some reason I'm the only one that considers this a "AA" cross-gen game only and an irrelevant timed exclusive. If the hype that is Uncharted 4 (next gen only) holds true in quality - its going to further hurt Xbox and TR in perception from its sheer quality (my assumption). Will it give xbox a few more sales? Maybe a few.

For today Microsoft is once again in the hot seat for something silly. They have zero transparency and just seem like flat out shysters.

probably a two way deal they help publish yet also FFXV or KH3 timed too

The amount of melt down that would happen due to that XD! I don't think Square Enix is THAT stupid to pull something like that :D.

Between FFXV stupidly long development cycle (being a PS3 exclusive but now a multiplatform game) and KH3 being closely linked to Sony (with the KH HD Collections ONLY being on PS3).....it would be counter-intuitive for them to get Microsoft to have them as timed-exclusives.

Besides, those are games that will push PS4's in Japan; Sony may not be willing to pay for 3rd party exclusives like how Microsoft has been doing but they would have no issues paying to make sure they land on the PS4 (PS4 needs JP support to sell over there and these games are sure-fire ways to make that happen).

I can't imagine what MS would have achieved if they had invested all their recent timed exclusive payments into decent studios or first party titles. Everyone is losing in the end.

I'm laughing because they are in the shit for, like, the umpteenth time this year. I would laugh if the other Big Two tried to do something like this too, albeit for different reasons.

These things are generally done in a clearing under a full moon, Phil Spencer naked and dripping with pig's blood.

"And we will definitely be spending money on developing the game"

If only $1 from the moneyhat is spent on development. Then yes, they can say they are spending money developing the game.
It's a polite way of bribing someone.

Do you realize how insane this is? You are saying that Phil has no regard for a massive amount of gamers - in fact, the majority right now - who could potentially in the future buy an XBO or a future Microsoft Xbox product. In what bizarro world do you think this is a smart thing to do? Why is it that some companies can choose not to mistreat massive amounts of customers, but others can't? Why is that you or anyone else feel the need to defend such shitty practices, when you were always going to get the game anyway?

As I said, I'm happy Tomb Raider is going exclusive on XBO, means a chance for the franchise to die now that it has been turned into AAA checklist cinematic garbage. But these posts are just silly.

What about North America / Europe timed exclusivity? :P

Not really. Any given PS4 owner is a potential Xbox One owner. I wouldn't be going out of my way to piss people off personally but I guess that's why I'm just a normal person and not head of Xbox.

PS4 owner here looking at becoming an X1 owner this fall. I can say he's certainly not helping his cause, at all, actually.

It's a good thing I didn't bother addressing the muddy logic of that post as three people probably would have finished doing it before I did.

It ain't dying. New Tomb Raider is badass and old Tomb Raider is for farts like you. ;)

Phil will make things better on stage @E3 next year when he switches into a Crystal Dynamic T-shirt at the presser.

Why do some of you care so much to know the terms of the exclusivity? So either the company does full disclosure or they're considered scumbags?

Wow. Finally Spencer is become part of MS. It begins.

Not sure why so many believed differently, so many put all the blame on Mattrick and gave Spencer a pass because he was a "gamer" and said the right things on twitter even though he was right up there in the ranks and probably helped with most of the decisions on the Xbox One.

It most likely won't, but this is the best chance I'm ever going to have for the series to be replaced with something that has actual quality gameplay and game design again. It's like a very low odds, but before there was 0% in the near future, now there's like a 5% chance. I'll take any improvement on my odds here, any outlook that means damaging this new fake TR abomination and forcing the company to reevaluate its priorities. I like my platforming with actual challenge, my tomb raider with limited combat engagements, and exploration and trap/obstacle navigation being paramount the same way actual, meaningful puzzle design was.

If that makes me an "old fart", I'm the oldest of all farts. >:)

Sounds pretty cut and tie to me, Its more or less going to be an Exclusive for an extended period of time. You wont invest so much into the production of a game to have it jump ship to another platform a few months after release. The third TR game or close to its development is probably when the exclusivity will end. Will this shift many consoles for the Xbox when it comes to that time, it probably will. The average gamer does not keep up with news like this or joins gaming forums, they just go where the games are and when it gets to holiday 2015 its going to be like.. " oh xbox one gets TR first.. better buy that then" plain and simply.
