Phil Spencer: MS will spend money on marketing and developing Rise of the Tomb Raider

Do you honestly think that Sony doesn't do this for all of their first-party games?

Jesus Christ. Like seriously do people like you even read the shit you're typing? Sorry gaf, i need to take a break from you for awhile till the cleaning team does its job.

how many times does this have to be explained to people? it's not about the freaking exclusivity, it's about the bullshit backwards PR speak and deceptive wording about if it's a timed exclusive or not.

But you already know the answer. If it wasn't timed, they would say it will be exclusive forever. They would say "only place to see Lara" bla bla bla.

We all know this. Whether or not Squeenix brings her over once the timed exclusive ends is up to them.

They aren't saying BS PR speak, they obviously don't want to say... "Hey guys, Tomb Raider on Xbox One before PS4. Wait a while and it will be on all consoles."

Just imagine what it would sound like? The whole internet would end up telling people to "wait for greatness" like they do with almost everything that comes out of Sony PR speak.

Really, what do you expect? You know it's not full on exclusive. Of course they don't give details, it is a business deal.

"Buy the iPhone 5S for fingerprint scanner and the best Retina display... but wait a year or two and you can get those with Android."

Sure....by fucking morons with no understanding of the situation.

Because of fucking morons being fucking PR morons by even bigger morons fucker didwit morons.

Isn't that what Sony is saying? Only reason if it isn't coming to Xbox is because of Xbox' stupid parity clause. AND THAT! Is MS fault. Apparently some Indies where quick as fuck to sign "timed exclusive" deals to sidestep this but it's such a cluster of stupid :/

Jesus Christ. Like seriously do people like you even read the shit you're typing? Sorry gaf, i need to take a break from you for awhile till the cleaning team does its job.

So... how else do Sony get exclusive games besides funding a studio, buying a game currently in development... paying for exclusive content...

This thread makes it sound like using money for exclusives is evil. But how else would you get exclusivity on x86 hardware?

"Coming holiday 2015 is Rise of The Tomb Raider, exclusively on Xbox One, for some amount of time as we are still working out the details and what the deal actually means for us because we ourselves do not know what we are capable of with all of this money we have so we keep pushing the envelope so that we can obfuscate messages that are normally clear and make them more confusing than they really need to be because fuck it why not we are Microsoft and we want your money and what better way to get your money than to lock in a multi-platform title that was originally going to be released on our competitors' platforms and our own than by paying for it to only be on our own console, which means we are over-delivering on value when we don't necessarily have to, because as I said just a few sentences ago we have a lot of money, so much in fact that coming holiday 2015 is another major title that we are sure our customers are going to enjoy, and that title is Halo 5, a title we managed to secure for a certain amount of time, although we are not too sure of the details because fuck it, money does this sometimes and we are really confused. Welcome to Xbox. We fuckin' love gamers. TV mother fuckers."

I'm an xbox fan

This whole thing is a fart in the wind to the casual market.. A timed exclusive is still an exclusive there.

But the whole thing has been a clusterfuck for the enthusiast market. Its proved that Xbox hasn't changed as much under phil spencer as many would think and shatters the illusion that he is a excec cut from a different cloth than the rest of microsoft.

That said, its debatable how much that matter. Most enthusiasts have already made their choice of console, whether they have bought it or not. Even the influencer angle doesn't mean much.

A poor showing all round, but in the long term, doesn't really mean much.

It sounds like the game is console exclusive if they are putting their own money into developing the game. Unless Microsoft will be letting a co-financed game onto other platforms, which seems unreasonable. It will eventually get a PC release, as the third-party exclusives for this gen seem to be doing, but otherwise, I doubt this will be on PS4 purely based on the wording.

Instead of asking Spencer, people should really hound SE and see exactly what they have to say. The game is getting a lot of attention based around this deal, which, to him, is more a good thing than a bad thing.

Didn't MS pay for the GTA IV DLC development that eventually made its way to PS3 and PC? It doesn't seem that odd when you think most games have front loaded sales.

I wonder if MS is paying for another dev team to handle the 360 version, or they're using it to showcase cloud computations with weather (or something like that), or maybe it will have some kind of Fortaleza features (assuming that ever materializes). Maybe all three.

In any case, nobody here knows the extent of the deal and there's a lot of time before it releases. Everyone needs to relax about it.

Spending money on developing could just mean they are sending their own programmers to CD to make sure CD gets the most out of the hardware.

Okay seriously now.

I hear it a lot for it to just be a joke, but supposedly MS is "writing checks" for exclusives and this is a bad thing right?

But I guess y'all all agree that Johnathan Blow is a smart dude making The Witness exclusive to PS4 just 'cause "fuck MS".

Which is even funnier because The Witness is just a first to console exclusive. It will end up on Xbox later and iOS and PC at launch.

Exactly, its mainly that crow making a shit ton of noise an trying to make it into some controversy, because they want to know if its coming to their system, MS really doesn't have to clarify it, infact as you said they would be idiots to

Do you honestly think that Sony doesn't do this for all of their first-party games? Do you think Sony's exclusives are exclusive because the devs like PlayStation more, so it is more deserving?

Are you basically applauding fanboy developers, or saying those who think it is smarter to make games for PS4 are just less interested in money?

Games are never supposed to be about making as much money as possible?

You're not "supporting" the PS4 the way football club fans "support" their team by cheering the console on every time there is good news like 10mil sales. You are not buying games to fund Sony, you are buying games to enjoy them. You are consuming what they have to offer, not "supporting".

If you own both and you choose to "boycot" Tomb Raider because you feel that MS shouldn't ever conduct business and should, I dunno, make a HaloBox and accept Sony are just better, then grow the hell up or admit you weren't interested in Tomb Raider anyway.

Totally irrational. I understand being salty there is no Tomb Raider on PS4 if it's the console of your choice, but MS aren't "evil". I can't play Dreamfalls on the Xbone because Sony bought/funded up exclusivity, despite loving the original on the Xbox. That doesn't make me suddenly not interested in the game.

But I guess y'all all agree that Johnathan Blow is a smart dude making The Witness exclusive to PS4 just 'cause "fuck MS".

Thumbs up dude, rare to see rational posts like yours nowadays. Console wars have been increasing as of late and I find ridiculous this bandwagon that thinks that MS is evil and Sony is for the gamers . FFS they're both in it for the money.

Which is even funnier because The Witness is just a first to console exclusive. It will end up on Xbox later and iOS and PC at launch.

isn't it nice to actually know this for a fact because they were actually upfront and straight forward with us though?

Dude, do you even know what first-party studio means? It's owned by sony. As it's a sony studio so they dont pay for the IP to be exclusive, they pay they're freaking employees because it's part of sony. I seriously never thought i would ever have to explain what a first party studio is on gaf.

Uhhhh The Witness situation happened because Microsoft would not allow indie devs to self publish.... that's not helping your argument...

What understanding of what situation? You said MS was taken the brunt of the blow-back... Actual Tomb Raider fans seem much more upset at Square than Microsoft.

I think MS has and will now continue to have the brightest light shined on them.

The people upset on the games official board are deluded.

Uhhhh The Witness situation happened because Microsoft would not allow indie devs to self publish.... that's not helping your argument...

Also I am pretty sure The Witness is coming to XBO unless Microsoft doesn't let it. Blow doesn't agree with all of there policies but he is a business man and will try to ensure his game is a success.

Spending money on developing could just mean they are sending their own programmers to CD to make sure CD gets the most out of the hardware.

I don't know about that. This sounds a bit more closely linked, like they are flat out helping fund the game same as they would a first party game that they publish themselves. Microsoft sends their people out for multiple games, but I don't think they would say "We're spending money on the development of Destiny."

We know. If it was console exclusive Spencer would have said so. The only thing we don't know is the duration.

Even if it were a console exclusive, saying so is probably not the wisest decision. For now they aren't talking about what other platforms it's coming to, but the fact that he said similar to dead rising in that tweet is pretty interesting. Dead Rising 3 may very well still end up on PS4, but just not till mid 2015 or so. Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it can't still happen, and the situation could be the same for the PS4 and Tomb Raider. The most important detail is how long is timed, and which platform/platforms gets it next.

I literally couldn't facepalm harder, the worst part is the people who are agreeing and cheering this guy on. Some people need to take a step back, walk outside and smell the fresh air to clear their heads.

People are assuming this was a straight forward business deal.

Many deal variables could actually make this question hard to answer.

I actually think Square might be looking to sell the franchise and crystal Dynamics. As MS is looking for a game to compete with Uncharted. It could be a perfect fit. ( I know this is a long shot)

1) Thresholds: If the game Sells X amount within Y time frame. The game stays exclusive to Xbox one.

2) if game Sells X amount, Microsoft can purchase Cd and IP for pre determined amount.

These are just a few examples. These deals could have a lot of variables.

It's what he said. Please, read.

No it's not. In what alternate reality are

"It has a duration"

“Right now we have a relationship with Square and Crystal on publishing the game,” Spencer confirmed. “The exact details of what publishing means and when it gets done are part of that deal - I’m not trying to be opaque about it. We will clearly spend money on marketing the game, there’s no doubt about that. And we do [that] on games where we have very little to do with development, and with games that we fully develop. And we will definitely be spending money on developing the game - I want to make sure that it’s as great as it can be.”

Is the same as

"We have partnered with Square/CD to bring Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusively to Xbox One during the Holiday 2015 season. After that time, it's totally up to Square to decide what they want to do with their game".

The former is purposefully verbose and non committal to the point the reader is unsure of anything. Furthermore it is worded in such a way to cleverly trick readers that might not be as well informed by implying equivocation with series that are XB1/PC only and MS published. He even drops an exceedingly vague comment about MS publishing the game which if true would be a really big fucking deal but he shies away from outright saying that instead hints at it.

The later is two sentences and tells the reader everything they need/want to know without any of the former's misleading wording or phrasing. They are not even remotely the same.

MS has a big PR problem and the way Phil Spencer is answering the questions people are asking is portraying both him and the company as one of two things

  1. Sleazy: banking on the idea that their customers are too stupid to see through their cleverly and deceitfully worded BS
  2. Incompetent: woefully uninformed. make deals with publishers and have no idea what the fine print is and are thus unable to clarify the situation
So pick one. Which is it? Because until they stop with this absurd messaging this is exactly how the customer base will see them.
