Hyrule Warriors (Zelda Musou) Import Impressions

I guess it seems smaller when you consider that Samurai Warriors 4, Dynasty Warriors 8, and Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate have 55, 87, and 145 characters respectively.

These games always reuse old characters and most characters in normal Warriors game look and play the same.

HW characters are more diverse. Other Warriors Spin-Offs like Ken's Rage or One Piece: Pirate Warriors had only 10 to 13 characters. Pirates Warriors 2 had about 35 characters (old+new).

That review makes the game seem pretty good and in-line with expectations. Basically all of the negatives are things I knew about and am fine with considering I already like Musou games.
Yes. Puyo, the guy who wrote the review, is a Musou fan. Most of his Musou reviews got 5 or below. HW sounds better than usual.

What I didn't like:
- 2 player mode - the visuals take a really bit hit when playing coop. If it was just the resolution I wouldn't complain, but there are less enemies on the screen, which makes taking over bases take longer. There are also some framerate issues in coop mode, although they aren't that terrible.
- The game froze on me during one of the missions.

If I read the tweet right, it sounds like these are getting fixed with future patches, hopefully before NA launch.

Freezes? Sure. Lower resolution and less enemies in coop? I don't think so - it was a conscious decision made to have a decent framerate.

Hard to wrap my mind around that sentence. ;)

Not bothered by reviews at all since most will slag off any game in the musou genre.
My personal tactic is to ignore any reviews, except for Jim's and just buy every single game. :P

Actually, every character in SW4 and DW8 is unique. In Dynasty Warriors, They used to have trouble with clones, but they finally got around to giving every character their own moveset. Same goes for Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate. Movesets on the whole play more differently than they did in the classic era of the series (2-5) as well.

is this an upgrade ?

While there are technically no clones in DW8, the movesets have become so completely generic and boring that a lot of characters might as well be. There is really no diversity at all in that game.

Okay, I've cleared the story mode (took me about 10-ish hours on Normal). Selling the game back tomorrow, since while it was fun, I'd rather play Basara 4 for hours and hours for my musou needs.
The adventure mode and chaos difficulty are there though, so no need to worry about the lack of content.

What I liked:
- The music. Great arrangements of popular Zelda tunes, although some of the tracks sounded a bit boring.
- The visuals (when playing alone). The game looks really good, has no slowdowns (or at least I haven't noticed any) and attack animations are great.
- The upgrade system.
- Adventure mode and the amount of secrets.
- All the fanservice for the Legend of Zelda fans.
- The core gameplay, which felt like a bit like a dumbed down musou game, but was really enjoyable.
- Different characters with completely different playstyles.

What I didn't like:
- 2 player mode - the visuals take a really bit hit when playing coop. If it was just the resolution I wouldn't complain, but there are less enemies on the screen, which makes taking over bases take longer. There are also some framerate issues in coop mode, although they aren't that terrible.
- The story. But it's not like anyone is playing the game for it, so whatever.
- Brain dead enemies. I know that I'm to blame for choosing the normal difficulty setting, but even during the time when I tried the game on hard, I haven't noticed much difference in the trash mob ai.
- Some of the characters - using the wood rod with Lana was a real pain in the ass.
- The game froze on me during one of the missions.

To summarize, it's a solid Musou games perfect for Zelda fans.

So I'm curious, I adore Dynasty Warriors 8 due to the campaign. Would someone in my camp like Hyrule Warriors mainly based on that fact alone? DW8's campaign is what got me interested in Musou games again.

I disagree. There are some movesets that are terrible, but each new moveset that they make is more interesting than the last (all the Xtreme Legends newcomers, for instance), and they seem to be making a real effort to diversify playstyles.

After playing a bit more, there is no doubt in my mind that this game should have full voice acting.

after watching over 8 hours of it you can see the lips moving so I guess the DW engine they are using supports that but they really showed how ridiculous the silence is and then you have the grunts and squeaks

stupid move Nintendo Need to change this Zelda feature I am willing to NOT buy Zelda WiiU for missing voices.

Froze up for me once in co-op Adventure Mode, shortly after returning to the world map. Had to power down and restart; fortunately didn't lose any progress...

Ah, yep - exact same here.

Seems like it's happening to quite a few people. Hopefully it's patchable and fixed soon - I was not as lucky as you were when my freeze happened.

Yup, I can understand Nintendo not doing it in a real Zelda(though I think it needs it soon) but this was the perfect opportunity to try it out.

Seeing the lips move and the random grunting together really highlights how awkward it is. I understand the decision not to do it, sure, but I think the game is hindered by it. Or, more specifically, I think the game would feel more complete.

I doubt Zelda U will look as awkward without voice but the cutscenes in Zelda Musou kinda takes you out of the narrative it makes you want to check your volume settings or your HDMI connection because a sound track is clearly missing you only have sound effects turned on and no voice while seeing lips move in well done encounters of characters you want to care about but are mute. To me that is very weird, for a celebration of Zelda you walk away with the feeling that this is a feature in Zelda you never want to feel good about.

Highly doubt that one smiles

eh, I tend to skip Zeldas although the HD and Open World thing has my number

I have a good history of skipping Zeldas

Skyward Swords my copy has as much less play time than I gave The Last Story

I like the look but hate the controls

Never play Majora's Mask and the only portable Zelda I finished was OoT 3D

I'm sure Zelda U will present the lack of voices better less grunts and more charm in the grunts when you play Skyward you can still feel the charm when the characters interact you notice the lack of voices less

Twilight Princess Midna had speech it was not speech you could under stand it was still very charming so in many ways I can see how Zelda U might still win me over without voice

Zelda Musou can't sell the silence at all

Yes, t feels like there should be voice acting, you just can't here it.

I use to is right, been saving up for my PS4 and I am no longer rewarding Ubisoft with more of my monies lol

I still have two downloads a month which is still bad I think

still will have little need for PS4 until Sleeping Dogs and GTAV

So I cannot wait for Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors :)

Voice acting was really needed in this game for both gameplay and story reasons. The gameplay in Musou makes it annoying for you to read the text while having to battle enemies, and the way KOEI makes cutscenes makes lack of voice-acting specially jarring.

This was really the opportunity to try it out.

So I watched a full playthrough and have a story question.
Late game SPOILERS!!
So Cia is the one who turned Midna into an imp in this game, but after Cia is defeated Lana just sends everyone back to their rightful place(while Midna is still transformed)
and doesn't seem to reference it again

Did I miss something?

No, you didn't.
Midna just left like nothing happened at all, lol.

not canon but
Midna has her own power over transformation and using gates as long as a greater force was not controlling her, After Cia was gone I thought she could transform at will, also if they are going to continue to support he game with DLC maybe Princess version shows up later?

Hah then you can stream PT...right? lol

I'm scanning through this topic, but has anyone played on hard yet? Can't seem to find any, but maybe I missed it. Those are the impressions I want to read, since mind numbing simplicity is not appealing to me :P

It's been a long while since I got into a Musou game, but I'm ready and willing if this turns out to be great. Need to know it'll be sufficiently challenging on hard though!

I watched the game trailers stream he never died he was enjoying the game only failed a few times by getting distorted by cuccoos he showed the setting for easy normal hard but he played normal

like I said he never died

I wanted to see him play on hard because near the need you had to fight some extra challenging characters
I wanted to see a beat down

from people who played DW before I heard this game is much easier

Heh, yeah difficulty is an essential element of games like this for me. I need a palpable sense of tension and reward for overcoming difficult challenges.

I hope Chaos/Hard difficulty mode is crazy, 'cause I want to fuck up the whole world with my girl Midna.

Chaos is crazy, 1 hit from enemy cost you 2~3 hearts. Hard only makes you kill mobs and bosses slower if your level and weapon is not good enough, wont kill you.

^ I felt the same about hard so I just switched back to normal since slower progression which isn't more challenging isn't really that appealing in a game like this.

this is of a hard balance, from watching this game being played all the characters must be leveled up to have all the move sets

the satisfying bad ass feeling does not come until you have those great fluid moves that making you feel satisfied but when you level up it becomes easier to wreck shit up

I get setting it on Chaos is where you would want to be but as you level up I wonder if you are not too skilled a player to die easily

The materials required to upgrade combos are actually easy to get after half of the story mode, so not a big problem. Leveling up is harder IMO.

Would you mind expounding a bit on this. Is the story bad, or is it sparse/nonexistent? I don't really mind mediocre stories, but I need it to keep me motivated. Something like DW7's campaign is ideal. Something like WO3's is fine.

Just wanted to drop by to tell I got the game today.
So far I enjoy the game, it's a nice spin-off (I never played a Muso game before).
Give you a taste of what a 95% action oriented Zelda game is.
It's something different, worth the hype and far from being bad, I take it!

I just want to say adventure mode owns 80% of the contents of the game. You need to try it.

How's the game been selling?

I really hope it does good...

I expect less then 100K first week.

This is my first Musou game after playing numerous demos on PS3 and so far I'm enjoying it. The repetitive button mashing gameplay is something I was expecting but thanks to being a bit of a Zelda fanboy(I bought the Treasure Box from Amazon.jp), the large amount of fan service is keeping me interested.

If nothing else the game reinforces my love for Midna (Nintendo's best character for 20+ years as far as I'm concerned). Thanks to the incredibly simplistic gameplay it's also an easy/fun game to play while drunk which is perfect for the state that I currently find myself in :p

If you want it to be less button mashy turn it onto the harder difficulties :P

Bought it yesterday along with Taiko no Tatsujin Wii U Version (took me long enough to get that one I know), but only did two story missions and one adventure battle.
First Musou game for me as I already said, playing on normal so it's a bit button-mashy but quite fun! It's also quite pretty. :)
