PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4) | August 2014

I'm predicting that the majority will give it at least an 8. I don't see how this game could get anything lower. I mean, not to sound like a broken record, but the amount of content this game gives you for your money is fuckin insane. And the gameplay is really great.

Hehe, true though I meant besides the score, I want to see what people think of the gameplay. Outside of animation stuff, I haven't seen much criticism towards the gameplay at all.

Sword Art Online looks interesting but I dunno if I can power through 14 episodes of anime first since I just don't enjoy watching animes.

It's an anime about a video game, you should try and watch it.
The first 14 were top notch, like 10/10.
The rest of the first series is good, 7/10.

I just got caught up on my RSS feeds this morning and see that an arcade Rygar remake is coming out for PS4 tomorrow. I hadn't heard anything at all about this, and was totally surprised.

Does anyone have any more info about it?

Amount of content != high score.

I did also say the combat was great, no? And while I agree that amount of content doesn't equate to a great game, I meant to qualify it by saying the content itself is great. But whatever.

Yeah that is was really matters.

I try not to think that people think that this is a waifu show/game.

I don't know what do you remember about SAO but it's the show where the main characters sees every female character in underwear in the next 5 minutes after meeting her for the first time.

Wow. I'm amazed how much talk SAO is getting. I really hadn't even heard much about it before this thread except the shitty anime that bored me to death on Toonami.

I still have to get Disgaea 4 and i'm still saving up so money in hopes to get that Neptunia LE on the 26th so I can't really get it anyways but nice to hear talk about a game out of nowhere.

Oh crap, I still have to get Child of Light Vita too, at this point maybe its best to wait on a sale on that one.

This is my main concern. Is there a truncated version of the main points of the anime for people who don't want to watch 7 hours of TV before enjoying the game?

SAO? It is worth buying but you would get more out of it by at least watching eps 1 - 14 but that said, the game is pretty good as a whole I'd say.

No Retail or online pass but there is ad-hoc MP along with SP MP with AI folks.

Sales in Japan are over 200k, think someone posted the exact number in the OT but I don't have it on hand atm.

There will be references/characters and little things you won't get, but I wouldn't say its absolutely necessary to watch the show first to enjoy the game. The game has a short recap as far as explaining the setting too.

As for Japan sales, it's the overall 4th best selling Vita game

from the OT discussions, it sold like 240k+ in Japan, good enough for top 4th overall

It is still recommended to watch the anime but the game itself has a short recap I think
Thank you for the responses, guys! I think I am going to watch at least one season before classes start and then I'll buy Asian version seeing this is not a Freedom Wars case (another game on my list! Along with Danganronpa 2, Hatsune Miku, Minecraft, Disgaea 4, Oreshika, Velocity Ultra 2... Great end of year.)

But it is.

Sadly this is true.

lol. To be fair, while yeah...SAO is definitely Waifu heavy, you can avoid most of that in the game itself. A lot of it is optional. So those turned off by this sort of thing, shouldn't worry too much. But yeah, they know their audience and have included these kind of things for those that want to explore it.

Wat? No. You're still exposed to it quite a bit.

Wat? No. You're still exposed to it quite a bit.

You are in certain parts of the narrative. But it's definitely not the majority of the game. A lot of the stuff is optional. And even the stuff in the narrative that is cringe/waifu isn't lengthy. Then again, you say "quite a bit"...so I guess to you, it was the majority of the narrative. I disagree. Although I guess you are right that I shouldn't have said you could avoid a lot of content, because it's in the narrative in parts. I guess at least IMO, there is a lot of waifu stuff that is pretty racy that you can do on the side. And if people want to avoid that, they can.

But yeah, there is the typical cringe stuff in the narrative. I just don't think it's heavy enough to bother those that hate that kind of thing. I mean, plus the bulk of the game is running around doing combat and missions. It's not like Akiba's Trip or a fan servicey game like that, where the fan service is embedded in every aspect of the game.

just remember the game splits off after episode 14, an alternate storyline

Holy shit that romance video for SAO is hilarious. "Indeed" "Indeed" "Indeed" "Indeed" "Indeed" is all he needs from walking around to sleeping in bed together!

I still can't et a grasp on how combat works, other than that this games seems like a def buy, anyone have a good detailed vid explaining how the heck combat works?

For reference I have never played an mmo nor a hunting game...

It's free style. But there is a lot buffs and cool downs. You want to time combos with your AI partner. So while you could technically hack n' slash, the way to take down enemies properly is to strategically use certain skills/powers and get a synergy going with your AI partner (and buffs and cooldown's play a role in that). The game gives you a lot of flexibility to invest in various weapon types, and skill trees. So it can get pretty complex if you want to.

But it's not turn based or anything like that. You just run around the world and attack enemies which engages in a combat in real time within that world. And then you pretty much use your skills and work down it's health.

Yup I second that Liz is the second best girl in terms of plot in this game. Both Sinon and her are such deep characters, and in Liz's case she isn't given enough screen time in the first season of the show in order to show it. To me the most cringe worthy is Silica, because that girl only cares about Kirito, and nothing else lol... All heroines are alright, but Sinon and Liz are definitely the top two contenders for best story interaction and events. They also kick major ass gameplay wise.

But it is.

Like I said before, I watched all of Season 1 and I could only name 2 female characters. If that's a waifu show then they did a pretty bad job. Game seems to have much more waifu elements than the show did, seemingly optional but also welcome because I actually wanted to know more about the other female characters than the show gave me.

Apparently I also have 4 crunchyroll guest passes, so if anyone wants to watch this you can also send me a PM. I logged out and it still let me watch the series, but this might get rid of the adds?

I find it somewhat ironic that people are telling everyone to get the SAO game and one person was saying that the waifu portion is mostly optional, yet that's mostly what we're talking about rather than the combat system. lol.

I didn't focus on the dating stuff when I played this game. Kind of makes wish I would have done so with Liz and Sinon, if they are such great characters. I only focused on Asuna just because it was canon to the story.

But do you attack with those skills assigned to buttons? I see a lot of menu stuff that seems like it is going to be confusing as hell...

That sounds sort of action rpg'y, but then it sounds like the delay part is odd.

Yeah there is buttons that they are assigned to. You can also hold down a button + another button to access more stuff. There is an entire skill menu that allows you to customize all that.

So does tomorrow's US release of SAO still include the original PSP game that was never released in NA?

The psp game is a remaster and one arc, and hollow fragment, which is orginal to the vita's release is another arc. You can and should freely play both of them since progressing in Aincrad unlocks features that can help you in the Hollow Area and vice versa. In short, both Arcs (plus the patch content that drops in September) are all one game that can be accessed freely at any time, rather than 2 (3 with the patch i guess) different games.

I don't? Thanks for being so antagonistic over a small observation lol.

Have you ever played an MMORPG? It is menu based with assigned hot keys for skills, much like an MMORPG.

Psh

...

I actually said that they know who their fan base is, and clearly a lot of people care about the waifu stuff in this game. It has an appeal. But I don't agree that people that don't like that stuff can't still enjoy the game. Yes, there is some cringe stuff in the narrative (that you can't avoid). But it's no where near the bulk of the game. It's not embedded in the gameplay the way other fan service games are. In fact, you will go the majority of the game not seeing it. And if you want to explore the waifu/dating stuff, you certainly can (but it's optional).

The combat/loot and exploration in this game is massive. I do not think the waiuf/dating stuff (even the forced parts in the narrative) even come close to matching the core gameplay elements of this title. As far as why so many people are talking about it on here instead of combat...well it's because a lot of people here care about it! Don't really see how that negates my points.

Unless again, you really believe that the waifu/narrative stuff is really that heavy to the point that it will turn off those that hate that stuff. I don't agree that it does, but that's just me. Anyways, I'm not telling anyone to buy this. Ultimately, it's up to their own judgment if it's something they are interested in or not. Not every game is for everyone. Even a game that many think is "technically great" can be absolutely awful for someone else.

My only points are that, this game is a great value for the price (the amount of content you get for the price). My opinion is that the gameplay and exploration elements are excellent, and that anyone that is a fan of the genre would probably like it. But that's just me. People should buy whatever they want, and should never 100% decide to buy something based on others opinions.

I've played the game. I think it is an integral part of it. You don't think so? You're free to believe that. I on the other hand think otherwise.

Great, thanks for the info! I'm very tempted to download SAO tomorrow night.

waifu wars have begun

I guess if people don't like Waifu/fan service, they should really consider staying away from this game. The waifu/fan service stuff is so embedded and integral to the game, that it will be a turn off (even though the game has a ton of other great qualities).

I think that's fair to say. At the end of the day, it's up to the individual to decide if this game is for them or not. But I don't want to give them false info, and then have them buy it and get mad (it's why I'm always weary of suggesting games).

I personally thought the waifu/fan service stuff was more on the optional side. But I guess I'm wrong. But that's all I'll say on this again. Basically, tread lightly if you don't like this sort of stuff. If you love waifu/fan service stuff, full speed ahead!

EDIT: And no, this isn't sarcasm. Just conceding here. Like I said, don't want people to buy this game with a false perception of what it has in it. Would rather be cautious.

Can't wait to play SAO and waifu anyone but Asuna.

Not to get into a thing here, but what's up with all the Asuna hate? I liked her character in the first 14 episodes. Sure she got really emotional at times, but outside of that she seemed like a strong character who, from what I understand, is ruined in the second half.

Anyway, really looking forward to the game. I also wish we would get solid dates for Freedom Wars, Oreshika and Risk of Rain.

Edit: top of page, I'd suggest SSD or Disgea 4. Also, do yourself a favor and grab Dragons Crown. In the mood for a shooter, grab Killzone Mercenary.
