What's goiung on with gaming journalism`(/r/gaming)

I don't know where you could go to read a proper and relatively objective summary of the situation. I would consider writing one, but it seems like a waste of time if threads following this story are just going to be locked.

If you do want a summary, please do not watch or post that awful video from the InternetAristocrat. That dude gets some of the facts right, but he has an utterly delusional persecution complex and some very obvious slant. If you agree with him, he makes a very poor case for your side. If you disagree with him, then you'll just come away with a sour taste in your mouth.

Female developer accused of sleeping around to get better reviews/coverage for her game? Yeah I think I've heard enough. This is a disgusting accusation that I'm not surprised comes from a community that labels women as whores and sluts.

Y'know, there's probably a conversation to be had in general about the very cordial relationships press often have with the developers whose products they cover (though on the whole I think the industry is actually pretty good at all that stuff), but this certainly isn't the manner in which it all should be had, about one particular person's private life and with a torrent of pointless abuse.

Judging purely on the basis of that Wordpress post, the woman sounds like she has no concept of self-control, and the guy sounds like he's taken it way too seriously and continually pushed it after he broke the relationship off.

I have no sympathy for either of them.

Well yeah, cheating is extremely serious. It's an utterly terrible thing to do to someone.

This is what I was referencing. The whole ex-boyfriend stuff isn't worth talking about, but I would think someone would comment on this lol:

Was it a bad joke or something?

It's not coming from any community. It's coming from a blog of her ex-boyfriend.

I kind of wish we had a HEAVILY moderated GAF thread about this subject.

All I've seen is totalbiscuit's post, and a bunch of people in Twitter going crazy and saying videogames/videogame-journalism are/is dead and I barely have any idea what's actually going on.

I don't understand why certain topics are "not okay" to talk about? Isn't there a TOS that describes what is okay and what is not? As long as people steer clear from things that are clearly not okay (insults, threats, etc.) why should certain things not be talked about?

This isn't true, though. Nathan mentioned Zoe Quinn once on Kotaku, before they begun any sort of relationship, as Stephen addressed on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/stephentotilo

Yeah. I really couldn't find the link that any of these videos have brought up. This all seems a bit overblown. I'm sure the MRA idiots are out in full force though.

I haven't seen any articles that seem like they are favorable or unfavorable to her game from the journalists alleged to have had relationships with her. Seems like a story where people want to use a taboo and character assassination to connect dots that can't be connected.

Ths is NOT an issue with gaming journalism .. it is an issue of journalism as a whole.

The entire DEFINITION of journalism.

That is why we had sub genres of journalism like Gonzo and other "yes, we are partial" genres because ... it is IMPOSSIBLE for the human mind to be impartial.

It has NOTHING to do with the girl

Long story short - they all communicate with each other and have developed something akin to a hive mind. Before embargoes lift, they can only talk to each other about what each game is, what they liked, what they didn't, and their perspectives on games are heavily influenced by one another's musings.
I don't even understand how the nepotistic favoritism conceived by a romantic relationship between an indie developer and one game journalist sheds a unique perspective on this, either. It's a complete non-issue relative to the strategies that larger publishers may be employing. I've never even heard of her game before this "scandal".

I'm very confused by all the censorship across multiple social media websites though...

Seems to be a huge coverup, that's the real problem, I think. Reddit mod constantly purging any mention of it.

Blanket censorship is never good, and makes everyone involved look bad.

I didn't know anything about this until I just saw the reddit drama, but it looks like threads are being locked on here, too?

Also Phil Fish just had another meltdown or mocked meltdown or some shit (directed at totalbiscut or w/e, who commented on this) and protected his tweets. Haha, internet.

EDIT: Fuck, I got to stop reading this stuff. It's amusing, but wretched (on both sides). Would you believe I stopped playing RE4 for this? Moment of weakness.

What bothers you about it so much?

I don't fucking care about the private life of someone that doesn't want his private life to be public.

He's been white knighting her since the thing blew up. Poisson for you, ya know.

And yet it doesn't mean it's not something one should strive for.

A vindictive ex-boyfriend making outrageous claims to drag a woman's name through the mud? Tell me more.

Well the guy posted video proof about her cheating in the form of chat logs between the two. Doesn't get more cut and dry than that. I won't link it here since I don't want to get banned, but you can find it elsewhere.

I have been watching this all morning/day.
Though my opinions are a bit biased since I had to view it from the perspective of /v/, it's all kinds of fucked.

Both sides have just come off as childish and defensive all around.
Except for the Chloe woman I guess.

The amount of censorship that's been going on surrounding this has been pretty disgusting. That plus the fact that the sites (Kotaku, RPS, Destructoid e.t.c.) involved in this have been completely silent is also quite telling.

If this was a male developer I have the odd feeling that this would already be making it's rounds on every major gaming news site. Why is this being suppressed? We had no problem delving into the private lives of the male developers who have been involved in similar controversy

yeah i only realized there was a shitstorm going on after seeing it on reddit, people claiming the "scandal" is getting censored everywhere else, they namedropped gaf too.

i watched that one video which came off as pretty one sided, there were a few things i wouldnt mind knowing more about though (the failed gamejam, wedding harassment claim, dmca claim) but its all heavily intertwined with her private life,
and a lot of it just crosses some really personal lines.

for the record i think there is definitely a discussion to be had about parts of this "scandal"

My only problem with Zoe Quinn is that I'm almost 100% sure she is a compulsive liar who made up a lot of stuff to gain the trust of the SJW crowd, making her game a lot more popular.

All this personal stuff of her that has appeared online, I think that's awful. There's definitely no excuse for that kind of harassment against her... no matter what she might have done or not.

Thing is, all of this doesn't justify her behaviour though. I'm still confident she made up stuff like "dudes jerking off into her phone" and the countless "raids" which she never posted proof about. All she ever posted as proof was a post or two on a board called wizardchan. A board filled with people too afraid to even talk to a woman. This is of course speculation from my side, but I still think she used those posts to create imaginary raids. Same goes for the phonecalls.

IF the part about her fucking a journalist for a positive review of her game is true that is shameful and a bummer but it literally is only ONE example of this happening. I am never one to defend most of the hack writers in games "journalism" but this seems to be blown slightly out of proportion. One incident =/= the downfall of an entire industry. Still a bummer all around though. She doesn't seem like a very nice person.

Weird, I guess this must be the first game developer of all time who has been accused of sleeping around, she also happens to be a woman who has endured a metric shit-ton of abuse online. But I'm sure that's just a funny coincidence right?

Agreed. Just recently her Tumblr blog was supposedly "hacked" by /v/, even though /v/ isn't trying to get her doxxed or hacked at all.

I don't know why it's not ok to talk about this when other gaming journalism controversies were allowed

Because this issue is certainly being used as a proxy argument by those with bones to pick. Look at the list of people involved in this "controversy" in the OP, and terms already being thrown around like MRA and SJW.

There is a conversation to be had about all this, but it'll likely get lost in a sea of agenda.

Nathan Grayson never reviewed Depression Quest. Search Kotaku for posts tagged "Depression Quest."

We're not going to be discussing Zoe Quinn's personal life. Don't start another thread, don't take it to a different thread.
