If they're added in one batch as a patch, post WiiU release to keep some of the roster hidden, absolutely. It would just be another change in the patch.
I do not see Sakurai charging for vets at all, especially not series staples like Ice Climbers. The backlash would be insane. But a free patch right after the WiiU launch, to maintain some level of a hidden roster, is the perfect solution.

Pichu kind of peters off after gen 4, and even then all it had was that promotion and associated content due to HG/SS. Dr. Mario meanwhile just had Dr. Luigi (kinda).
Here's what I think it'd look like:
Almost everyone stays in the same general spot. The clones are moved to be with their series, and G&W moves to be with the rest of the DLC characters. Snake sneaks in between random and Sonic, so that the veteran third parties are next to eachother. Chorus Men go next to Shulk, putting all the non-retro series with only one rep close together.

It being an ESRB employee has already been disproved, so I believe the current argument is that the leak is via a Treehouse member who was collecting footage for submission to the ESRB.
If this article is to be believed, Treehouse is relatively small, but extremely exclusive department, and likely the only place with such a build of the localized release. Assuming the character name is meant to represent the build for submission to the ESRB or something like that, it'd be extremely easy to identify who was responsible for handling capturing the footage. It'd be a shockingly stupid move to reveal this information, then. I have a hard time believing anyone in Treehouse would be this stupid, and the lack of leaks stemming from the Treehouse in the past speaks to this.

As you guys know, this was one of the allegedly leaked pictures from the /v/ thread that I reposted here.
After that thread died down, a user that I will not identify at this time contacted me claiming that the above picture is an edit of some sort that they made. Of what and to what extent, they didn't specify, and they haven't replied to my queries about it.
I'm not sure to what this means for the rest of the alleged leak, but I suppose you should ignore this picture for the time being, or at least regard it with more skepticism than the rest.

So I'm still catching up on the thread, and if this does turn out to be real, then no Wolf or ICs would be a real loss for me. We'd lose one of the few "villain"/anti hero characters AND a unique retro rep character. Really hope that it's not true (which might not be, but you never know)

Here's what I think it'd look like:

Some horizontal and some vertical comes off as extremely tacky from a design standpoint.
Also, Oric, great stuff. I think, "Go Weegee" every time I see that gif.

Two things I don't understand and why I'm on team fake
- how come the picture with "Duck Hunt" has a different UI then the one that sits below the whole CSS?
- still don't understand how pictures of the 3DS top and bottom screen are just one seem less picture?
I'm sure people can explain this to try and persuade me and maybe someone already did, still leaning fake though. Still it's fun to think how close we are getting and I expect these leaks to just ramp up until the 13th f Sept!

I find it unlikely that we would have both vertical and horizontal series alignment on the same roster.

For the seamlessness, the idea may be that the images were from a capture card and being played on a screen.

He's got to fit more characters than ever before on a screen with less pixels than ever before. Shit's gonna look ugly regardless.
If this is fake, though, I hope it's a scrollable screen.on the 3DS version. Would look much better than squishing them all into one screen, and would take advantage of everyone having their own screen.

I have not played any of the Luigi's Mansion games though I am kind of curious about the 3DS one.
I kind of like playing him in Smash, that little rib shot (idk what it's called lol) is pretty great.

Like it's a name tag you create, judging by past smashes you could make and delete those pretty quickly. It could be done just to screw with us, or in fact in the case it was real it may have been done just to try to throw Nintendo off the trail of who leaked it. (In whichcase they didn't know the ESRB don't play the games or whatever.)
But yeah donning my tinfoil hat.

You never know. 
Dr. Mario would have been in a similar situation to Lucina: they're running out of dev time so to beef up the roster they're promoting alternate costume-characters that have specific differences from the base character (Mario, in this situation) to full characters. Their assets are already in the game. Pichu's assets are not (and neither would a character like Wolf or Lucas).
That's a theory, anyway.
You guys need to realize that it's not "x character over y character", it's "this alternate costume could be a full character and add a slot to the game, we don't have any time left to make x veteran character because we would have to develop them from scratch."
